Parameter Estimation For The Lognormal Distribution, Brenda Faith Ginos Nov 2009

Parameter Estimation For The Lognormal Distribution, Brenda Faith Ginos

Theses and Dissertations

The lognormal distribution is useful in modeling continuous random variables which are greater than or equal to zero. Example scenarios in which the lognormal distribution is used include, among many others: in medicine, latent periods of infectious diseases; in environmental science, the distribution of particles, chemicals, and organisms in the environment; in linguistics, the number of letters per word and the number of words per sentence; and in economics, age of marriage, farm size, and income. The lognormal distribution is also useful in modeling data which would be considered normally distributed except for the fact that it may be more …

Returns To Selecting Value Stocks In Australia – The Aby Filters, Bruce Vanstone, Tobias Hahn, Gavin Finnie

Tobias Hahn

The development of the Financial Crisis throughout 2008 and into 2009 has caused many fund managers to question their Growth based investment models. Interest appears to be again rekindled in the traditional Value based models, where investment decisions are based on sound company fundamentals rather than abstract futuregrowth expectations. This paper reviews a specific set of value based filters for selecting undervalued stocks which appeared in a series of papers published soon after the 2000 Dot-Com debacle. This paper documents the performance of these filters in the Australian stockmarket.

We present the results obtained from an all-sky search for gravitational-wave (GW) bursts in the 64-2000 Hz frequency range in data collected by the LIGO detectors during the first year (November 2005-November 2006) of their fifth science run. The total analyzed live time was 268.6 days. Multiple hierarchical data analysis methods were invoked in this search. The overall sensitivity expressed in terms of the root-sum-square (rss) strain amplitude hrss for gravitational-wave bursts with various morphologies was in the range of 6×10-22Hz-1/2 to a few×10-21Hz-1/2. No GW signals were observed and a frequentist upper limit of 3.75 events per year on …

Department of Physics and Astronomy Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

We present an all-sky search for gravitational waves in the frequency range 1 to 6 kHz during the first calendar year of LIGO's fifth science run. This is the first untriggered LIGO burst analysis to be conducted above 3 kHz. We discuss the unique properties of interferometric data in this regime. 161.3 days of triple-coincident data were analyzed. No gravitational events above threshold were observed and a frequentist upper limit of 5.4year-1 on the rate of strong gravitational-wave bursts was placed at a 90% confidence level. Implications for specific theoretical models of gravitational-wave emission are also discussed.

Analyzing Bivariate Survival Data With Interval Sampling And Application To Cancer Epidemiology, Hong Zhu, Mei-Cheng Wang Nov 2009

Analyzing Bivariate Survival Data With Interval Sampling And Application To Cancer Epidemiology, Hong Zhu, Mei-Cheng Wang

Johns Hopkins University, Dept. of Biostatistics Working Papers

In medical follow-up studies, ordered bivariate survival data are frequently encountered when bivariate failure events are used as the outcomes to identify the progression of a disease. In cancer studies interest could be focused on bivariate failure times, for example, time from birth to cancer onset and time from cancer onset to death. This paper considers a sampling scheme where the first failure event (cancer onset) is identified within a calendar time interval, the time of the initiating event (birth) can be retrospectively confirmed, and the occurrence of the second event (death) is observed sub ject to right censoring. Joint Mixed-Effects Models For Longitudinal Data Analysis: An Application For The Metabolic Syndrome, John Thorp Iii Nov 2009

Joint Mixed-Effects Models For Longitudinal Data Analysis: An Application For The Metabolic Syndrome, John Thorp Iii

Theses and Dissertations

Mixed-effects models are commonly used to model longitudinal data as they can appropriately account for within and between subject sources of variability. Univariate mixed effect modeling strategies are well developed for a single outcome (response) variable that may be continuous (e.g. Gaussian) or categorical (e.g. binary, Poisson) in nature. Only recently have extensions been discussed for jointly modeling multiple outcome variables measures longitudinally. Many diseases processes are a function of several factors that are correlated. For example, the metabolic syndrome, a constellation of cardiovascular risk factors associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes, is often …

Dinamica De Los Bosques De La Llanura Aluvial Inundable De La Amazonia Peruana: Efectos De Las Perturbaciones E Implicancias Para Su Manejo Y Conservacion, Gustav Nebel, Lars Peter Kvist, Jerome K. Vanclay, Hector Vidaurre

Professor Jerome K Vanclay

Forest dynamics was studied from 1993 to 1997 for individuals > 10 cm DBH in nine one-hectare permanent sample plots. They were established in natural flood plain forests located on the lower Ucayali river in the Peruvian Amazon. After inventories of three plots in each of three forest types, a light and a heavy felling treatment were applied to each of two plots, while a third plot was kept untreated. Average annual stem mortality and recruitment rates in the untreated plots were among the highest observed in neotropical rain forests: mortality 2.20-3.16 %/year, recruitment 2.99-4.57 %/year. Dead individuals significantly deviated from …

Professor Jerome K Vanclay

Three peruvian flood plain forests adjacent to the Ucayali river were sampled using nine one hectare permanent sample plots in which stems exceeding 10 cm DBH were identified and measured. These plots have been measured 4 times during 1993- 1997, and provide the basis for the results reported here. Three plots were established in each of the three forest types high restinga, low restinga, and tahuampa, characterized in part by and annual inundation of 1, 2 and 4 months per year, respectively. Stem density varies from 446 to 601 per ha, and the basal area ranges between 20-29 m2/ha. A …

Electrochemical And Photovoltaic Properties Of Electropolymerized Poly(Thienyl-Silole)S, Joshua C. Byers, Paul M. Dicarmine, Mahmoud M. A. R. Moustafa, Xin Wang, Brian Pagenkopf, Oleg A. Semenikhin Nov 2009

Electrochemical And Photovoltaic Properties Of Electropolymerized Poly(Thienyl-Silole)S, Joshua C. Byers, Paul M. Dicarmine, Mahmoud M. A. R. Moustafa, Xin Wang, Brian Pagenkopf, Oleg A. Semenikhin

Chemistry Publications

Electrochemical and photoelectrochemical properties were studied of a series of donor−acceptor materials based on polythiophene modified with silole moieties. The materials were prepared by electrochemical anodic polymerization of 2,5-bis([2,2′-bithiophen]-5-yl)-1,1-dimethyl-3,4-diphenylsilole and 2,5-bis([2,2′-terthiophen]-5-yl)-1,1-dimethyl-3,4-diphenylsilole, as well as copolymerization of these monomers with 2,2′-bithiophene. Photocurrent measurements showed that introduction of silole resulted in a considerable enhancement of the photovoltaic properties of silole-containing materials and especially the fill factor. However, as demonstrated by Mott−Schottky measurements, electropolymerized silole-containing materials showed a substantial degree of disorder and high density of states in the midgap, which negatively affected their photovoltaic properties. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) and phase imaging …

The g factor of the 2+1 state of 172Hf was measured using the perturbed angular correlation technique in a static external magnetic field. The result, g(2+1) = 0.25(5), is discussed in relation to the systematics of the previously reported g factors in the Hf isotopes and compared with the predictions of several models. An interesting outcome of the analysis presented in this paper is the agreement between the calculated g factors within the interacting boson approximation (IBA) and the results of a large-scale shell model calculation. This agreement supports the emphasis in the …

Mpcs: Mobile-Based Patient Compliance System For Chronic Illness Care, Guanling Chen, Bo Yan, Minho Shin, David Kotz, Ethan Burke

Dartmouth Scholarship

More than 100 million Americans are currently living with at least one chronic health condition and expenditures on chronic diseases account for more than 75 percent of the $2.3 trillion cost of our healthcare system. To improve chronic illness care, patients must be empowered and engaged in health self-management. However, only half of all patients with chronic illness comply with treatment regimen. The self-regulation model, while seemingly valuable, needs practical tools to help patients adopt this self-centered approach for long-term care. \par In this position paper, we propose Mobile-phone based Patient Compliance System (MPCS) that can reduce the time-consuming and …

Impact Of High Frequency Waves On The Ocean Altimeter Range Bias, Douglas C. Vandemark, Bertrand Chapron, T. Elfouhaily, J. W. Campbell Nov 2009

Impact Of High Frequency Waves On The Ocean Altimeter Range Bias, Douglas C. Vandemark, Bertrand Chapron, T. Elfouhaily, J. W. Campbell

Ocean Process Analysis Laboratory

New aircraft observations are presented on the range determination error in satellite altimetry associated with ocean waves. Laser-based measurements of the cross correlation between the gravity wave slope and elevation are reported for the first time. These observations provide direct access to a long, O(10 m), gravity wave statistic central to nonlinear wave theory prediction of the altimeter sea state bias. Coincident Ka-band radar scattering data are used to estimate an electromagnetic (EM) range bias analogous to that in satellite altimetry. These data, along with ancillary wind and wave slope variance estimates, are used alongside existing theory to evaluate …

Status And Trends Report - November 2009, Erik Nordman, Betty Gajewski, Paul Isely, John Koches, Stuart Kramer, Kurt Thompson, Jon Vandermolen

Technical Reports

The deployment of thousands of wind energy facilities required to meet various renewable energy targets will bring changes to the nation’s landscapes, communities, and economies. Identifying and reconciling the trade-offs that inevitably arise from projects such as locating wind energy facilities is a major challenge to successfully meeting renewable energy targets. These complex challenges span scientific disciplines, involve multiple scales, lack well-defined solutions, and involve public values. Integrated assessment has been used effectively to address a number of complex challenges, ranging from climate change to “dead zones” in the Gulf of Mexico. The intent of this integrated assessment project, and …

Electron Drift Directions In Strong-Field Double Ionization Of Atoms, Stanley L. Haan, Z. S. Smith, K. N. Shomsky, P. W. Plantinga Nov 2009

Electron Drift Directions In Strong-Field Double Ionization Of Atoms, Stanley L. Haan, Z. S. Smith, K. N. Shomsky, P. W. Plantinga

University Faculty Publications and Creative Works

Longitudinal momentum spectra and electron drift directions are considered for several laser wavelengths in non-sequential double ionization of helium using three-dimensional classical ensembles. In this model, the familiar doublet for wavelength 800 nm and intensities of order 5 × 1014 W cm-2 becomes a triplet for wavelength 1314 nm, then a doublet for 2017 nm. The results are explained based on whether the post-ionization impulse from the laser results in backward drift for one or both electrons.

Regional Response To A Statewide Renewable Energy Standard: Status And Trends Of Wind Energy Development In West Michigan, Erik Edward Nordman

Erik Edward Nordman

This project used integrated assessment to explore and analyze regional response to Michigan’s renewable portfolio standard (RPS). The RPS required electric providers to generate ten-percent of their electricity from renewable sources by 2015. Wind was identified as a primary source of renewable energy, and much of the state’s wind resources are concentrated in the West Michigan coastal zone. About 28 percent of the state’s planned wind generation capacity is located in the four-county study area. Local governments vary in their current regulations for siting utility-scale wind farms, as well as in their attitudes toward them. The region has significant offshore …

Computer Crime And Identity Theft, Harry A. Hunter

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

The problem at hand is the increased amount of vulnerabilities and security hazards for individuals engaging in e-commerce, business transactions over the World Wide Web. Since the majority of people aren't paying their bills by mailing in their payment to the vendor, they pay for the items they purchase online, which makes them open to hackers and social engineering attacks. They place their credit card/debit card numbers, their phone number and home address, and even their birth date information on company websites. All these security vulnerabilities make the risk of identity theft increasingly high. Identity theft is when an individual's …

Comparison Of Alpha-Element-Enhanced Simple Stellar Population Models With Milky Way Globular Clusters, Hyun Chul Lee, Guy Worthey, Aaron Dotter

Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications and Presentations

We present simple stellar population (SSP) models with scaled-solar and α-element-enhanced abundances. The SSP models are based on the Dartmouth Stellar Evolution Database, our library of synthetic stellar spectra, and a detailed systematic variation of horizontal-branch (HB) morphology with age and metallicity. In order to test the relative importance of a variety of SSP model ingredients, we compare our SSP models with integrated spectra of 41 Milky Way globular clusters (MWGCs) from Schiavon etal. Using the Mg b and Ca4227 indices, we confirm that Mg and Ca are enhanced by about +0.4 and +0.2dex, respectively, in agreement with results from …

Functional Transition In The Floral Receptacle Of The Sacred Lotus (Nelumbo Nucifera): From Thermogenesis To Photosynthesis, R. E. Miller, J. R. Watling, Sharon A. Robinson

Sharon Robinson

The receptacle of the sacred lotus is the main source of heat during the thermogenic stage of floral development. Following anthesis, it enlarges, greens and becomes a fully functional photosynthetic organ. We investigated development of photosynthetic traits during this unusual functional transition. There were two distinct phases of pigment accumulation in receptacles. Lutein and photoprotective xanthophyll cycle pigments accumulated first with 64% and 95% of the maximum, respectively, present prior to anthesis. Lutein epoxide comprised 32% of total carotenoids in yellow receptacles, but declined with development. By contrast, more than 85% of maximum total chlorophyll, β-carotene and Rubisco were produced …

Responses Of Plants In Polar Regions To Uvb Exposure : A Meta-Analysis, K. K. Newsham, Sharon A. Robinson

Sharon Robinson

We report a meta-analysis of data from 34 field studies into the effects of UV-B radiation on Arctic and Antarctic bryophytes and angiosperms. The studies measured plant responses to decreases in UV-B radiation under screens, natural fluctuations in UV-B irradiance, or increases in UV-B radiation applied from fluorescent UV lamps. Exposure to UV-B radiation was found to increase the concentrations of UV-B absorbing compounds in leaves or thalli by 7% and 25% (expressed on a mass or area basis, respectively). UV-B exposure also reduced aboveground biomass and plant height by 15% and 10%, respectively, and increased DNA damage by 90%. …
