The objective of this study is to demonstrate a Bayesian approach for the statistical analysis of neurosurgical data where the investigators have used an ordinal scale for the outcome. A Bayesian approach that uses data augmentation and Gibbs sampling to perform ordinal probit regression is demonstrated in a neurosurgical context. The statistical approach is applied to a regression analysis to examine the relationship between female gender and the outcome of severe traumatic brain injury measured with the Glascow Outcome Scale. The approach is applied to a hierarchical meta-analysis to examine the relationship between age and the outcome from subarachnoid haemorrhage …

Trans-Dimensional Metropolis-Hastings Using Parallel Chains, Sally Wood, James Pullen, Robert Kohn, David Leslie

A general Bayesian sampling method is developed that uses parallel chains to select between models and to average the predictive density over such models. The method applies to both non-nested models and to nested models, and is particularly useful for mixtures of complex component models, where a novel approach to overcome the label-switching problem is used. The method is illustrated with real and simulated data in model-averaging over alternative financial time series models, mixtures of normal distributions, and mixtures of smoothing spline models.

Tor is currently one of the more popular systems for anonymizing near real-time communications on the Internet. Recently, Borisov et al. proposed a denial of service based attack on Tor (and related systems) that significantly increases the probability of compromising the anonymity provided. In this paper, we propose an algorithm for detecting such attacks and examine the effectiveness of the obvious approach to evading such detection. We implement a simplified version of the detection algorithm and study whether the attack may be in progress on the current Tor network. The Philippines is among the most endemic-rich areas for all global biodiversity hotspots. Conserving that biodiversity presents multi-scaled challenges including the critical need for habitat and species level documentation as a basis for identifying conservation targets. Solitary wave evolution for a higher order Hirota equation is examined. For the higher order Hirota equation resonance between the solitary waves and linear radiation causes radiation loss. Soliton perturbation theory is used to determine the details of the evolving wave and its tail. An analytical expression for the solitary wave tail is derived and compared to numerical solutions. An excellent comparison between numerical and theoretical solutions is obtained for both right- and left-moving waves. Also, a two-parameter family of higher order asymptotic embedded solitons is identified.

Ingestion of antioxidants has been argued to scavenge circulating reactive molecules (e.g., free radicals), play a part in mate choice (by mediating access to this important resource), and perhaps increase life span. However, recent work has come to question these relationships. We have shown elsewhere in the polychromatic lizard, Ctenophorus pictus, that diet supplementation of carotenoids as antioxidants does not depress circulating natural reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels and leads to no corresponding improvement of color traits. However, a much stronger test would be to experimentally manipulate the ROS levels themselves and assess carotenoid-induced ROS depression. Here, we achieve this …

A chemically programmed photochromic liquid crystal (LC) polymer was newly synthesized and used to fabricate an actuator exhibiting reversible photo-activated bending behavior at ambient temperature. Due to the lack of chemical crosslinking in this photochromic LC elastomer, it was possible to fabricate an actuator in the form of fiber or film by melt or solution processing, respectively. The three-dimensional (3D) bending of the film actuator can be precisely controlled in various directions by polarized ultraviolet (UV) light. We consider the motion of a solitary wave, a nematicon, in a finite cell filled with a nematic liquid crystal. A modulation theory is developed to describe the boundary-induced bouncing of a nematicon in a one-dimensional cell and it is found to give predictions in very good agreement with numerical solutions. The boundary-induced motion is then considered numerically for a two-dimensional cell and a simple extension of the modulation theory from one to two space dimensions is then made, with good agreement being found with numerical solutions for the nematicon trajectory. Now we have combined our old presentations and drawings from the past and placed them in PowerPoint presentations with imbedded questions. These questions can be multiple choice or questions that have numerical answers. Our University has settled upon one company to provide a personal response system, eInstruction’s Classroom Performance System (CPS). A simple procedure for the synthesis of n-butyl naphthyl ether is presented. This procedure represents an easy method for the production of an aryl ether by an SN2 reaction, uses ethanol as an environmentally friendly solvent, and does not require the use of a lachrymator. Product isolation is done by pouring the reaction mixture over ice and collecting the solid by suction filtration. Students typically recover from 7–95% of the ether.

In the pyschology literature individuals are often classified as entity theorists or incrementalists. In this paper we explore the different learning behaviours over time of these two groups. To assess learning an individual is assigned a task and their performance on the task is measured over a number of trials. Learning behaviour is modelled as a mixture of two random effects, where the random effects components of the mixture correspond to increased learning and spiralling behaviour. We find significant differences in the learning behaviours of the two groups. Specifically those individuals who are categorized as entity theorists are more likely …

A simple SN1 reaction is presented that uses bromotriphenylmethane and a range of oxygen-based nucleophiles including water and various alcohols. This procedure represents a process that affords easy isolation of solid products. Typical student yields ranged from 17–128% with the average yield of 50%. Students obtained products with a melting point range of 140 to 164 °C. This procedure offers multiple ways to adapt this experiment from a straight solvolysis reaction to a discovery-based experiment that explores the effect of nucleophile (for a more advanced group) or the method of product isolation. We propose an algorithm to select parameter subset combinations that can be estimated using an ordinary least-squares (OLS) inverse problem formulation with a given data set. First, the algorithm selects the parameter combinations that correspond to sensitivity matrices with full rank. Second, the algorithm involves uncertainty quantification by using the inverse of the Fisher Information Matrix. Nominal values of parameters are used to construct synthetic data sets, and explore the effects of removing certain parameters from those to be estimated using OLS procedures. This study investigates the effects of customer contact frequency and relationship duration on customer-reported relationship strength (CRRS). Although relationships are understood to develop through an incremental process of time and encounters, exactly how frequency and duration interactively influence CRRS is not known. We embed our analysis of these two relationship-quantity variables within a larger model that considers the effects of relationship-quality variables—commitment, trust and satisfaction—on CRRS. We additionally control for customer demographics and service type. Using a fully national sample of 591 service consumers, we find that both contact frequency and relationship duration have a positive effect on CRRS, and …

In this paper, the dual reciprocity boundary element method (DRBEM) based on the perturbation method is presented for calculating run-ups of weakly nonlinear long waves scattered by islands. Under the assumption that the incident waves are harmonic, the time-dependent nonlinear Boussinesq equations are transformed into three time-independent linear equations by using the perturbation method, where, besides nonlinearity ε, the dispersion μ2 is also included in the perturbed expansion. The first-order solution η0 is found by using the linear long-wave equations. Then η0 is used in two second-order governing equations related to the dispersion and nonlinearity, respectively.
