Chemostratigraphy, Paleoceanography, And Sequence Stratigraphy Of The Pennsylvanian-Permian Section In The Midland Basin Of West Texas With Focus On The Wolfcamp Formation, Milton Cortez Jan 2012

Chemostratigraphy, Paleoceanography, And Sequence Stratigraphy Of The Pennsylvanian-Permian Section In The Midland Basin Of West Texas With Focus On The Wolfcamp Formation, Milton Cortez

Earth & Environmental Sciences Theses

The late Pennsylvanian to early Permian rocks (Wolfcampian and Leonardian) of the Midland Basin represent a single lithologic unit composed primarily of calcareous mudrocks, siliceous mudrocks, muddy carbonate-clast conglomerates, and skeletal packstones/grainstones at the approximate depositional center located in Reagan County, Texas. Pure versions of these lithologic end-members are discretely distributed among a multitude of transitional lithofacies. The Midland Basin evolved in the foreland of the Ouachita Fold-belt from Mississippian to early Permian time along-side several sub-basins of the Permian Basin. These basins were formed by disseverance and uplift associated with the continental collision of Laurasia and Gondwana to form …

Chemostratigraphy And Geochemical Constraints On The Deposition Of The Bakken Formation, Williston Basin, Eastern Montana And Western North Dakota, David Nyrup Maldonado

Earth & Environmental Sciences Theses

The late Devonian-early Mississippian Bakken Formation was deposited in a structural-sedimentary intracratonic basin that extends across a large part of modern day North Dakota, eastern Montana, and the southern portion of Canada's Saskatchewan Province. The deposition of the Bakken Formation occurred during a fascinating period of geologic time that is linked to one of the five major mass extinctions. The occurrences of these mass extinctions are recorded worldwide as organic rich mud rocks similar to the ones found in the Bakken Formation. Collectively, the Bakken Formation consists of a middle dolomitic siltstone that is representative of a transgressive deposit and …

Chemostratigraphy And Paleoenvironmental Significance Of The Pennsylvanian Smithwick Formation, Northern Llano Uplift Region, Texas, Rene Bernabe Ovalle-Rauch Jan 2012

Chemostratigraphy And Paleoenvironmental Significance Of The Pennsylvanian Smithwick Formation, Northern Llano Uplift Region, Texas, Rene Bernabe Ovalle-Rauch

Earth & Environmental Sciences Theses

The Early Pennsylvanian (Bashkirian-Moscovian) Smithwick Formation of Central Texas has been previously described as a marine transgressive, fairly homogeneous and fine-grained dark shale sequence with varying local depositional lithofacies. The deposition of the Smithwick shale through the southern margin of the Fort Worth Basin (FWB) has shown large variability in thickness and deposition style. Lithological heterogeneity of the bounding units throughout the basin is inferred to be the result of a combination of depositional, tectonic and eustatic variations. Regional structural instability from Late Mississippian to Early Pennsylvanian is linked to the reactivation of the Ouachita geosyncline and thrust front, causing …

An Atlas Of Cenozoic Climate Zones, Clinton Whitaker Crowley

Earth & Environmental Sciences Theses

This atlas illustrates global climatic zones in five major turning points of Cenozoic climate history: the K/T, the Paleocene/Eocene Thermal Maximum (PETM), the Eocene/Oligocene Transition (EOT), the Late Miocene (Messinian), and the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM). The mapswere produced from a combination of climate simulations (FOAM, CCSM, ECHAM, BESTGUESS, GENESIS and others) and climatic zone reconstructions based on lithologic data. Paleogeographic base maps of the time intervals from the PALEOMAP Project were then illustrated with an artist's rendition of the Earth's appearance. The color scheme was based onNASA's Blue Marble images. An overview of the conditions that shaped global climate …

Surface Lineaments And Lithofacies Distribution Of The Tyler Formation In Southwestern North Dakota, Nicolas Beltran Guerrero Jan 2012

Surface Lineaments And Lithofacies Distribution Of The Tyler Formation In Southwestern North Dakota, Nicolas Beltran Guerrero

Earth & Environmental Sciences Theses

The purpose of this study is to investigate whether a correlation exists between surface lineaments and lithofacies distribution of the Pennsylvanian Tyler Formation in the southwest portion of North Dakota of the Williston Basin. If a cost-effective technique to locate preserved fluvial sandstone bodies can be developed, the Tyler Formation has the potential to be a productive hydrocarbon exploration target. Many intercratonic sedimentary basins, such as the Williston Basin, exhibit nearly orthogonal surface lineaments. In the case of the Cooper Basin in Australia, lineament analysis helped locate areas where Proterozoic rocks are fractured and filled with quartz veins containing precious …

Bioanalytical Lc-Ms: Streamlined Sampled Preparation And Novel Ambient Ionization Techniques, Samuel Hsiao-Chieh Yang

Chemistry & Biochemistry Dissertations

Bioanalysis has gained importance in the scientific at an exponential rate. The focus of these works attempt to seek new approaches towards faster and more efficient bioanalysis that require little to no sample preparation. One approach is the use of new restricted access media trap technologies to facilitate an online sample preparation platform. A demonstration of the advantages of RAM involves the trace level detection of bisphenol A, an environmental contaminant. A bulk derivatization strategy used in combination with RAM trap technologies is adopted to boost sensitivity without the use of traditional sample preparation methods. Another strategy is the use …

Mixed Lineage Leukemia Histone Methylases In Hormonal Regulation Of Hox Genes And Their Disruption By Endocrine Disrupting Chemicals, Imran Hussain

Chemistry & Biochemistry Dissertations

Homeobox (HOX) genes are highly conserved family of genes that play vital roles during cell differentiation and embryogenesis. Of the 39 HOX genes present in human, HOXC6 is a critical players in mammary gland development, milk production and is over-expressed in breast and prostate cancer. I demonstrated that HOXC6 is transcriptionally regulated by estrogen (E2). The HOXC6 promoter contains two putative estrogen response elements (EREs). Promoter analysis using luciferase-based reporter assay demonstrated that both EREs are responsive to E2, ERE1half being more responsive than ERE2half. Estrogen receptors alpha and beta (ERα and ERβ) bind to these EREs …

Catalytic Hydro-Liquefaction Of Lignite Coals Under Mild Conditions, Mahir Alrashdan Jan 2012

Catalytic Hydro-Liquefaction Of Lignite Coals Under Mild Conditions, Mahir Alrashdan

Chemistry & Biochemistry Dissertations

A low-cost thermo-chemical process for the liquefaction of lignite coals is being developed at the University of Texas at Arlington (UTA). The coal-toliquids (CTL) project has focused of developing a liquefaction process which is made economically attractive by the combination of using a cheap coal feedstock, such as lignite, use of cheap disposable catalysts, and limiting the operating conditions to mild temperatures and pressures, at least relative to many existing CTL processes. The UTA-CTL process uses a solvent which is derived from the pyrolysis of lignite, an inexpensive iron-based catalyst and mild temperatures and pressures to hydrogenate and depolymerize the …

Increasing Lipophilicity Of Redox Active Ruthenium Complexes As A Means To Enhance Cytotoxicity And Reduce Animal Toxicity, Nagham Alatrash Jan 2012

Increasing Lipophilicity Of Redox Active Ruthenium Complexes As A Means To Enhance Cytotoxicity And Reduce Animal Toxicity, Nagham Alatrash

Chemistry & Biochemistry Theses

The dinuclear and monomeric ruthenium(II) polypyridyl complexes [(phen)2Ru(tatpp)Ru(phen)2]Cl4 (P) and monomer [(phen)2Ru(tatpp)]Cl2 (MP) are promising candidates for anticancer drug development in terms of the observed anti-tumor activity in mouse models. These complexes contain the redox-active tatpp bridging ligand which seems to be the critical component for biological activity. Ruthenium complexes containing the tatpp ligand have been shown to cleave DNA with an inverse dependence on the [O2], exhibit selective and good cytotoxicity towards a number of cultured malignant cell lines, and have tolerable acute toxicity in mice. Significantly, the animal toxicity of P and MP is significantly less than simple …

Molecular Engineered Myoglobin With Unnatural Amino Acids As A Peroxidase, Kananke Sriyani Liyanage Jan 2012

Molecular Engineered Myoglobin With Unnatural Amino Acids As A Peroxidase, Kananke Sriyani Liyanage

Chemistry & Biochemistry Theses

Myoglobin (Mb) has been used as a model system to mimic other biologically important heme proteins like cytochrome P450 due to its ability to prepare mixed ligand complexes with different valencies, such as ferric, ferrous and ferryl species. It has been engineered to perform peroxidase, peroxygenase, monooxygenase and catalase activities. However, previous work on this area has shown that the distal histidine (H64) in the active of wild-type Mb is a critical residue, which destabilizes compound I, the reactive intermediate of the catalytic cycle (a ferryl ð-porphyrin radical cation). Therefore in this study we replaced H64 with a smaller residue, …

An Investigation Into A Hybrid Genetic Programming And Ant Colony Optimization Method For Credit Scoring, Rojin Aliehyaei Jan 2012

An Investigation Into A Hybrid Genetic Programming And Ant Colony Optimization Method For Credit Scoring, Rojin Aliehyaei

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis proposes and investigates a new hybrid technique based on Genetic Programming (GP) and Ant Colony Optimization (ACO) techniques for inducing data classification rules. The proposed hybrid approach aims to improve on the accuracy of data classification rules produced by the original GP technique, which uses randomly generated initial populations. This hybrid technique relies on the ACO technique to produce the initial populations for the GP technique. To evaluate and compare their effectiveness in producing good data classification rules, GP, ACO, and hybrid techniques were implemented in the C programming language. The data classification rules were created and evaluated …

Development Of Tailor-Designed Gold-Platinum Nanoparticles Binary Catalysts For Efficient Formic Acid Electrooxidation, Islam M. Al-Akraa Dr, Ahmad M. Mohammad Prof, Mohamed S. El-Deab Prof, Bahgat E. El-Anadouli Prof Jan 2012

Development Of Tailor-Designed Gold-Platinum Nanoparticles Binary Catalysts For Efficient Formic Acid Electrooxidation, Islam M. Al-Akraa Dr, Ahmad M. Mohammad Prof, Mohamed S. El-Deab Prof, Bahgat E. El-Anadouli Prof

Chemical Engineering

The modification of a glassy carbon (GC) electrode with platinum (PtNPs) and gold (AuNPs) nanoparticles is targeted to fabricate efficient anodes for the electrooxidation of formic acid (FA). A proper adjustment of the deposition sequence of PtNPs and AuNPs could eventually enhance the electrocatalytic activity of the electrode in such a way that suppresses the CO poisoning effect during FA oxidation. The highest catalytic activity is obtained at the Au/Pt/GC electrode (with PtNPs firstly deposited on the GC electrode followed by AuNPs). This superb enhancement is quantified by comparing the relative ratio of the direct vs. the indirect oxidation peaks …

Microfluidic Separation Of Live And Dead Yeast Cells Using Reservoir-Based Dielectrophoresis, Saurin Patel, Daniel Showers, Pallavi Vedantam, Tzuen-Rong Tzeng, Shizhi Qian, Xiangchun Xuan

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Faculty Publications

Separating live and dead cells is critical to the diagnosis of early stage diseases and to the efficacy test of drug screening, etc. This work demonstrates a novel microfluidic approach to dielectrophoretic separation of yeast cells by viability. It exploits the cell dielectrophoresis that is induced by the inherent electric field gradient at the reservoir-microchannel junction to selectively trap dead yeast cells and continuously separate them from live ones right inside the reservoir. This approach is therefore termed reservoir-based dielectrophoresis (rDEP). It has unique advantages as compared to existing dielectrophoretic approaches such as the occupation of zero channel space and …
