Structuring Persistent Chat Conversations: Experimental Results Of The Chatsistance Tool, Siti Salwah Salim Dec 2011

Structuring Persistent Chat Conversations: Experimental Results Of The Chatsistance Tool, Siti Salwah Salim

Siti Salwah Salim Prof. Dr.

Abstract This research targets persistency by introducing new features in ‘Chatsistance’, a persistent chat tool that employs speech act theory and an explicit referencing technique to structure the chat log, and by providing further options for retrieving information. Earlier theory is related to the linguistics and characteristics of user statements. The later technique shows the relation of artefacts in an interconnected context named ‘explicit referencing’. Although speech actswere previously used in the field of chat, it is the first time that this theory has been used for the purpose of enhancing persistency combined with an explicit referencing technique, which together provide …

"Ectotherms increase their body temperature in response to ambient heat, thereby elevating their metabolic rate. An often inferred consequence of this is an overall upregulation of gene expression and energetic expenditure, and a concomitant increased production of reactive oxygen species (e. g. superoxide) and, perhaps, a shortened lifespan. However, recent work shows that this may be a superficial interpretation. For example, sometimes a reduced temperature may in fact trigger up-regulation of gene expression. We studied temperature and associated activity effects in male and female Australian painted dragon lizards (Ctenophorus pictus) by allowing the lizards to bask for 4 h versus …

Incorporating Network Structure In Integrative Analysis Of Cancer Prognosis Data, Shuangge Ma Dec 2011

Incorporating Network Structure In Integrative Analysis Of Cancer Prognosis Data, Shuangge Ma

Shuangge Ma

In high-throughput cancer genomic studies, markers identified from the analysis of single datasets may have unsatisfactory properties because of low sample sizes. Integrative analysis pools and analyzes raw data from multiple studies, and can effectively increase sample size and lead to improved marker identification results. In this study, we consider the integrative analysis of multiple high-throughput cancer prognosis studies. In the existing integrative analysis studies, the interplay among genes, which can be described using the network structure, has not been effectively accounted for. In network analysis, tightly-connected nodes (genes) are more likely to have related biological functions and similar regression …

Economics Of Residue Harvest: Regional Partnership Evaluation, David W. Archer, David J. Muth Jr., Jacob J. Jacobson, Douglas L. Karlen

Douglas L Karlen

Economic analyses on the viability of corn (Zea mays, L.) stover harvest for bioenergy production have largely been based on simulation modeling. While some studies have utilized field research data, most field-based analyses have included a limited number of sites and a narrow geographic distribution. An Iowa case study is developed illustrating the use of data extracted from a database of geographically distributed field studies for a region-specific economic analysis. The analysis utilizes grain and residue yield and associated management information from two Iowa field research sites that are Sun Grant Regional Partnership locations associated with the Corn Stover Regional …

Landscape Management For Sustainable Supplies Of Bioenergy Feedstock And Enhanced Soil Quality, Douglas L. Karlen, David J. Muth Jr.

Douglas L Karlen

Agriculture can simultaneously address global food, feed, fi ber, and energy challenges provided our soil, water, and air resources are not compromised in doing so. As we embark on the 19th Triennial Conference of the International Soil and Tillage Research Organization (ISTRO), I am pleased to proclaim that our members are well poised to lead these endeavors because of our comprehensive understanding of soil, water, agricultural and bio-systems engineering processes. The concept of landscape management, as an approach for integrating multiple bioenergy feedstock sources, including biomass residuals, into current crop production systems, is used as the focal point to show …

Theoretical And Experimental Approach On Dielectric Properties Of Zno Nanoparticles And Polyurethane/Zno Nanocomposites, Wan Haliza Binti Abd Majid Dec 2011

Theoretical And Experimental Approach On Dielectric Properties Of Zno Nanoparticles And Polyurethane/Zno Nanocomposites, Wan Haliza Binti Abd Majid

Wan Haliza binti Abd Majid

ZnO nanoparticles (ZnO-NPs) were synthesized by a new, simple sol-gel method in gelatin media (particle size of ZnO ≈ 30 to 60 nm). Polyurethane/ZnO nanocomposites thin films (PU/ZnO-NPs) were prepared by mixing the ZnO-NPs into PU prepolymer. The nanocomposites were structurally characterized using Fourier transmission infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. The interaction between ZnO-NPs and PU matrix is studied by analyzing the differences in C=O region and N-H region of FTIR spectra. The morphology of ZnO and PU/ZnO nanocomposites were assessed using transmission electron micrograph, TEM, and field emission scanning electron microscope, FESEM, respectively. The dielectric properties of ZnO-NPs were attributed to …

On Influence Of Line Segmentation In Efficient Word Segmentation In Old Manuscripts, D. Fernández, J. Lladós, A. Fornés, R. Manmatha Dec 2011

On Influence Of Line Segmentation In Efficient Word Segmentation In Old Manuscripts, D. Fernández, J. Lladós, A. Fornés, R. Manmatha

R. Manmatha

The objective of this work is to show the importance of a good line segmentation to obtain better results in the segmentation of words of historical documents. We have used the approach developed by Manmatha and Rothfeder [1] to segment words in old handwritten documents. In their work the lines of the documents are extracted using projections. In this work, we have developed an approach to segment lines more efficiently. The new line segmentation algorithm tackles with skewed, touching and noising lines, so it is significantly improves word segmentation. Experiments using Spanish docu- ments from the Marriages Database of the …

A Framework For Manipulating And Searching Multiple Retrieval Types, Marc-Allen Cartright, Ethem F. Can, William Dabney, Jeff Dalton, Logan Giorda, Kriste Krstovski, Xiaoye Wu, Ismet Zeki Yalniz, James Allan, R. Manmatha, David Smith

R. Manmatha

Conventional retrieval systems view documents as a unit and look at different retrieval types within a document. We introduce Proteus, a frame-work for seamlessly navigating books as dynamic collections which are defined on the fly. Proteus allows us to search various retrieval types. Navigable types include pages, books, named persons, locations, and pictures in a collection of books taken from the Internet Archive. The demonstration shows the value of multi-type browsing in dynamic collections to peruse new data.

General Allee Effect In Two-Species Population Biology, Saber Elaydi Dec 2011

General Allee Effect In Two-Species Population Biology, Saber Elaydi

Saber Elaydi

The main objective of this work is to present a general framework for the notion of the strong Allee effect in population models, including competition, mutualistic, and predator-prey models. The study is restricted to the strong Allee effect caused by an interspecific interaction. The main feature of the strong Allee effect is that the extinction equilibrium is an attractor. We show how a "phase space core" of three or four equilibria is sufficient to describe the essential dynamics of the interaction between two species that are prone to the Allee effect. We will introduce the notion of semistability in planar …

Short-Period Gravity Waves Over Alaska, Michael Negale, Kim Nielsen, Mike Taylor, Britta Irving, Richard Collins Dec 2011

Short-Period Gravity Waves Over Alaska, Michael Negale, Kim Nielsen, Mike Taylor, Britta Irving, Richard Collins

Michael Negale

The propagation nature and sources of short-period gravity waves have been studied extensively at low and mid-latitudes, while their extent and nature at the polar regions are less known. During the last decade, observations from select sites on the Antarctic continent have revealed a significant presence of these waves over the southern Polar Region as well as shown unexpected dynamical behavior. In contrast, observations over the Arctic region are few and the dynamical behavior is unknown. A recent project was initiated in January 2011 to investigate the presence and dynamics of these waves over interior Alaska. This site provides an …

A Note On Horner's Method, Tian-Xiao He, P. J.-S. Shiue

Tian-Xiao He

Here we present an application of Horner's method in evaluating the sequence of Stirling numbers of the second kind. Based on the method, we also give an e_cient way to calculate the diference sequence and divided diference sequence of a polynomial, which can be applied in the Newton interpolation. Finally, we survey all of the results in Proposition 1.4.

Background Modeling Using Adaptive Pixelwise Kernel Variances In A Hybrid Feature Space, Erik G. Learned-Miller, Manjunath Narayana, Allen Hanson Dec 2011

Background Modeling Using Adaptive Pixelwise Kernel Variances In A Hybrid Feature Space, Erik G. Learned-Miller, Manjunath Narayana, Allen Hanson

Erik G Learned-Miller

Recent work on background subtraction has shown de- velopments on two major fronts. In one, there has been increasing sophistication of probabilistic models, from mix- tures of Gaussians at each pixel [ 7 ], to kernel density esti- mates at each pixel [ 1 ], and more recently to joint domain- range density estimates that incorporate spatial informa- tion [ 6 ]. Another line of work has shown the benefits of increasingly complex feature representations, including the use of texture information, local binary patterns, and re- cently scale-invariant local ternary patterns [ 4 ]. In this work, we use joint …

Finding Translations In Scanned Book Collections, Ismet Zeki Yalniz, R. Manmatha Dec 2011

Finding Translations In Scanned Book Collections, Ismet Zeki Yalniz, R. Manmatha

R. Manmatha

This paper describes an approach for identifying translations of books in large scanned book collections with OCR errors. The method is based on the idea that although individual sentences do not necessarily preserve the word order when translated, a book must preserve the linear progression of ideas for it to be a valid translation. Consider two books in two different languages, say English and German. The English book in the collection is represented by the sequence of words (in the order they appear in the text) which appear only once in the book. Similarly, the book in German is represented …

Scene Text Recognition With Bilateral Regression, Jacqueline Feild, Erik G. Learned-Miller Dec 2011

Scene Text Recognition With Bilateral Regression, Jacqueline Feild, Erik G. Learned-Miller

Erik G Learned-Miller

This paper focuses on improving the recognition of text in images of natural scenes, such as storefront signs or street signs. This is a difficult problem due to lighting conditions, variation in font shape and color, and complex backgrounds. We present a word recognition system that addresses these difficulties using an innovative technique to extract and recognize foreground text in an image. First, we develop a new method, called bilateral regression, for extracting and modeling one coherent (although not necessarily contiguous) region from an image. The method models smooth color changes across an image region without being corrupted by neighboring …

Three-Dimensional Structural Evolution And Kinematics Of The Piedemonte Llanero, Central Llanos Foothills, Eastern Cordillera, Colombia, Obi Egbue, James N. Kellogg Dec 2011

Three-Dimensional Structural Evolution And Kinematics Of The Piedemonte Llanero, Central Llanos Foothills, Eastern Cordillera, Colombia, Obi Egbue, James N. Kellogg

James N Kellogg

The Piedemonte Llanero is a wedge duplex zone in the Llanos foothills on the eastern flank of the Eastern Cordillera of Colombia. It is located northeast of the Cusiana and Cupiagua hydrocarbon fields. The area is characterized by a series of moderate to high-angle duplexes with east-southeast verging thin-skinned and thick-skinned tectonics. We present a structural model constrained by 2-D and 3-D seismic reflection data, surface geology, and well data. The structural analysis is based on backward modeling (kinematic restoration) and forward modeling using transfer-flexural slip and fault slip fold algorithms. The structures are significantly tighter in the northern segment compared …

Maa*: A Heuristic Search Algorithm For Solving Decentralized Pomdps, Daniel Szer, Francois Charpillet, Shlomo Zilberstein Dec 2011

Maa*: A Heuristic Search Algorithm For Solving Decentralized Pomdps, Daniel Szer, Francois Charpillet, Shlomo Zilberstein

Shlomo Zilberstein

We present multi-agent A* (MAA*), the first complete and optimal heuristic search algorithm for solving decentralized partially-observable Markov decision problems (DEC- POMDPs) with finite horizon. The algorithm is suitable for computing optimal plans for a cooperative group of agents that operate in a stochastic environment such as multi-robot coordination, network traffic control, or distributed resource allocation. Solving such problems effectively is a major challenge in the area of planning under uncertainty. Our solution is based on a synthesis of classical heuristic search and decentralized control theory. Experimental results show that MAA* has significant advantages. We introduce an anytime variant of …

Unsupervised Joint Alignment And Clustering Using Bayesian Nonparametrics, Marwan Mattar, Allen Hanson, Erik G. Learned-Miller Dec 2011

Unsupervised Joint Alignment And Clustering Using Bayesian Nonparametrics, Marwan Mattar, Allen Hanson, Erik G. Learned-Miller

Erik G Learned-Miller

Joint alignment of a collection of functions is the process of independently transforming the func- tions so that they appear more similar to each other. Typically, such unsupervised alignment al- gorithms fail when presented with complex data sets arising from multiple modalities or make re- strictive assumptions about the form of the func- tions or transformations, limiting their general- ity. We present a transformed Bayesian infinite mixture model that can simultaneously align and cluster a data set. Our model and associated learning scheme offer two key advantages: the optimal number of clusters is determined in a data-driven fashion through the …
