How Do Pedestrians Perceive The Safety, Comfort, And Usefulness Of A Walking Space? An Exploratory Study Of Pedestrian Perception, Amanda Rifqa Marisa, Achmad Hery Fuad

Smart City

Car-oriented development has brought several negative impacts on human quality of life. Therefore, it is necessary to pay more attention to walkability as one of the essential aspects of it, especially in the urban area. In the meantime, most research on walking and walkability still overlooks the role of the pedestrian's perspective in examining walkability. Hence, this research tries to fill the gap in walkability research by exploring the pedestrian perspectives on the safety, comfort, and usefulness of walking space as the three overlapping aspects between walkability and walking needs. This research took context in Suryakencana, Bogor City, Indonesia. To …

Powder coatings are a promising, solvent-free alternative to traditional liquid coatings due to the superior corrosion protection they provide. This study investigates the effects of incorporating montmorillonite-based nanoclay additives with different particle sizes into polyester/triglycidyl isocyanurate (polyester/TGIC) powder coatings. The objective is to enhance the corrosion-protective function of the coatings while addressing the limitations of commonly employed epoxy-based coating systems that exhibit inferior UV resistance. The anti-corrosive and surface qualities of the coatings were evaluated via neutral salt spray tests, electrochemical measurements, and surface analytical techniques. Results show that the nanoclay with a larger particle size of 18.38 µm (D50, …

Entanglement In The Hawking Effect: From Astrophysical To Optical Black Holes, Dimitrios Kranas Jul 2023

Entanglement In The Hawking Effect: From Astrophysical To Optical Black Holes, Dimitrios Kranas

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The Hawking effect is an exciting physical prediction lying at the intersection of the two most successful theories of the past century, namely, Einstein’s theory of relativity and quantum mechanics. In this dissertation, we put special emphasis on the quantum aspects of the Hawking process encoded in the entanglement shared by the emitted fluxes of created quanta. In particular, we employ sharp tools from quantum information theory to quantify the entanglement produced by the Hawking effect throughout the black hole evaporation process. Our framework allows us to extend previous calculations of entanglement to a larger set of cases, for instance, …

Catalan Numbers As Discrepancies For A Family Of Substitutions On Infinite Alphabets, Dirk Frettlöh, Alexey Garber, Neil Mañibo Jul 2023

Catalan Numbers As Discrepancies For A Family Of Substitutions On Infinite Alphabets, Dirk Frettlöh, Alexey Garber, Neil Mañibo

School of Mathematical and Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications and Presentations

In this work, we consider a class of substitutions on infinite alphabets and show that they exhibit a growth behaviour which is impossible for substitutions on finite alphabets. While for both settings the leading term of the tile counting function is exponential (and guided by the inflation factor), the behaviour of the second-order term is strikingly different. For the finite setting, it is known that the second term is also exponential or exponential times a polynomial. We exhibit a large family of examples where the second term is at least exponential in n divided by half-integer powers of n, where …

Exploring Mental Models For Explainable Artificial Intelligence: Engaging Cross-Disciplinary Teams Using A Design Thinking Approach, Helen Sheridan, Emma Murphy Dr., Dympna O'Sullivan Dr.

Conference papers

Exploring end-users’ understanding of Artificial Intelligence (AI) systems’ behaviours and outputs is crucial in developing accessible Explainable Artificial Intelligence (XAI) solutions. Investigating mental models of AI systems is core in understanding and explaining the often opaque, complex, and unpredictable nature of AI. Researchers engage surveys, interviews, and observations for software systems, yielding useful evaluations. However, an evaluation gulf still exists, primarily around comprehending end-users' understanding of AI systems It has been argued that by exploring theories related to human decision-making examining the fields of psychology, philosophy, and human computer interaction (HCI) in a more people-centric rather than product or technology-centric …

Exploring The Impact Of Eddies On Southern Ocean Biogeochemical Structure Using Bgc-Argo Float Observations, Nicola J. Guisewhite

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The Southern Ocean plays a crucial role in global ocean circulation, and global heat and nutrient transport. However, this region is both distant and dangerous and is therefore largely under-sampled and understudied. Methods to fill in biogeochemical data-gaps include using limited in-situ data in models to output biogeochemical property estimates, but a number of recent studies have raised concerns about how most Southern Ocean models do not resolve eddies. Eddies are known to impact biogeochemistry around the globe but little is known about their impact in the Southern Ocean. This study examines temperature, salinity, oxygen, nitrate, and dissolved inorganic carbon …

Extending The Work Of Dt-Fixup: Examining The Effects Of Powernorm And Madgrad Optimization On Dt-Fixup Performance, Prem Shanker Mohan

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

With the introduction of the attention technique, the Bidirectional Encoder Representations from Transformers (BERT) have greatly advanced the study of solving sequence-to-sequence tasks in Natural Language Processing (NLP). When the task-specific annotations are limited, the NLP tasks are commonly performed by pre-training a model using the transformer technique on large-scale general corpora, followed by fine-tuning the model on domain-specific data. Instead of using shallow neural components for fine-tuning, additional transformer layers could be introduced into the architecture. Recent research shows that, by resolving some initialization and optimization issues, these augmented transformer layers could lead to performance gains despite of the …

Application Of A Diatomic Molecule Model Potential To A Series Of Homo- And Heterodiatomic Molecules, Dorien E. Carpenter, Javier E. Hasbun

Georgia Journal of Science

We apply a one-dimensional classical model of a diatomic molecule model potential with modifications to H2, HF, LiF, N2, and CO. We obtain the unknown parameters of this model by digitizing plots of the potential curves for the molecules from a published, Hartree-Fock based theoretical electron correlation calculation (Piris 2017). We then apply the method of successive approximations to the model in order to calculate the wavenumber for each molecule in the series. The wavenumber depends on a parameter which in turn depends on the initial conditions. The value of this parameter for each individual molecule …

Investigating The Effects Of The Sugar Alcohol Osmolytes Glycerol And Erythritol In Aot Reverse Micelles, Animesh Dali '24, Bridget Gourley

Student Research

Water is a polar molecule that participates in hydrogen bonding and proton transfer. Geometric confinement and water’s interactions with osmolytes (small water soluble compounds) affect the ability of water molecules to hydrogen bond and transfer charges. Study of this behaviour of water with different osmolytes in controlled environments will help us develop predictive models. In our study, we have prepared Sodium bis(2-ethylhexyl)sulfosuccinate (AOT) reverse micelles (RM) in 2,2,4-Trimethylpentane (Isooctane). Our principle osmolytes were the straight chain sugar alcohols glycerol and erythritol. Study of water-osmolyte behaviour in the small and confined pool of a reverse micelle allows us examine the difference …

Estimation Of The Kelvin–Helmholtz Unstable Boundary, Xuanye Ma Jul 2023

Estimation Of The Kelvin–Helmholtz Unstable Boundary, Xuanye Ma

Publications

The Kelvin–Helmholtz (KH) instability is one of the most important mechanisms of the viscous like interaction between the solar wind and the magnetosphere (MSP), which transport the mass, energy, momentum, and magnetic flux. Thus, it is important to examine whether the magnetopause boundary is KH unstable or not. Based on the KH onset conditions, this report proposes to use a matrix to identify the most KH unstable direction based on the in-situ measurements of the density, velocity, and magnetic field in the MSP and magneto sheath. The range of the KH unstable direction can be easily estimated based on the …
