Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation contains the following sections. Chapter 1 contains a detailed description of the theory of thin layer chromatography (TLC). Chapter 2 describes the benefits and practical considerations of elevated temperatures in liquid chromatography (LC). The porous graphitic carbon (PGC) I modified as part of my work is often used in elevated temperature LC. Chapter 3 shows a thermodynamic analysis of chromatographic retention at elevated temperature, and Chapter 4 contains a closer look at the van 't Hoff equation in LC and how it can be used in retention modeling. In Chapter 5, I describe a new procedure for microfabricating …

Algorithmically Flexible Style Composition Through Multi-Objective Fitness Functions, Skyler James Murray Nov 2012

Algorithmically Flexible Style Composition Through Multi-Objective Fitness Functions, Skyler James Murray

Theses and Dissertations

Creating a fitness function for music is largely subjective and dependent on a programmer's personal tastes or goals. Previous attempts to create musical fitness functions for use in genetic algorithms lack scope or are prejudiced to a certain genre of music. They also suffer the limitation of producing music only in the strict style determined by the programmer. We show in this paper that musical feature extractors that avoid the challenges of qualitative judgment enable creation of a multi-objective function for direct music production. Multi-objective fitness functions enable creation of music with varying identifiable styles. With this system we produced …

A Cps-Like Transformation Of Continuation Marks, Kimball Richard Germane Nov 2012

A Cps-Like Transformation Of Continuation Marks, Kimball Richard Germane

Theses and Dissertations

Continuation marks are a programming language feature which generalize stack inspection. Despite its usefulness, this feature has not been adopted by languages which rely on stack inspection, e.g., for dynamic security checks. One reason for this neglect may be that continuation marks do not yet enjoy a transformation to the plain λ-calculus which would allow higher-order languages to provide continuation marks at little cost. We present a CPS-like transformation from the call-by-value λ-calculus augmented with continuation marks to the pure call-by-value λ-calculus. We discuss how this transformation simplifies the construction of compilers which treat continuation marks correctly. We document an …

Controlled Degradation Of Poly(Ester Amide)S Via Cyclization Of Pendant Functional Groups, Jose Samuel Mejia Nov 2012

Controlled Degradation Of Poly(Ester Amide)S Via Cyclization Of Pendant Functional Groups, Jose Samuel Mejia

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Polyesters have been used for many biomedical applications ranging from sutures to drug delivery vehicles. However, their bulk degradation results in an accumulation of acidic byproducts, which is detrimental to the human body. In order to circumvent this problem, as well as to impart new properties and functions to polymers for biomedical applications, poly(ester amide)s (PEAs) have been proposed as a different class of biodegradable polymers. However, up to date, there exists no way to stimulate the degradation of these polymers.

The Gillies research group has previously incorporated self-immolative spacers into polymers and has been able to stimulate their degradation …

Convex Hypersurfaces With Pinched Principal Curvatures And Flow Of Convex Hypersurfaces By High Powers Of Curvature, Ben Andrews, James Mccoy Nov 2012

Convex Hypersurfaces With Pinched Principal Curvatures And Flow Of Convex Hypersurfaces By High Powers Of Curvature, Ben Andrews, James Mccoy

Dr James McCoy

We consider convex hypersurfaces for which the ratio of principal curvatures at each point is bounded by a function of the maximum principal curvature with limit 1 at infinity. We prove that the ratio of circumradius to inradius is bounded by a function of the circumradius with limit 1 at zero. We apply this result to the motion of hypersurfaces by arbitrary speeds which are smooth homogeneous functions of the principal curvatures of degree greater than one. For smooth, strictly convex initial hypersurfaces with ratio of principal curvatures sufficiently close to one at each point, we prove that solutions remain …

Lifespan Theorem For Constrained Surface Diffusion Flows, James Mccoy, Glen Wheeler, Graham Williams Nov 2012

Lifespan Theorem For Constrained Surface Diffusion Flows, James Mccoy, Glen Wheeler, Graham Williams

Dr James McCoy

We consider closed immersed hypersurfaces in R^3 and R^4 evolving by a class of constrained surface diffusion flows. Our result, similar to earlier results for the Willmore flow, gives both a positive lower bound on the time for which a smooth solution exists and a small upper bound on a power of the total curvature during this time. By phrasing the theorem in terms of concentration of curvature in the initial surface, our result holds for very general initial data and has applications to further development in asymptotic analysis for these flows.

Self-Similar Solutions Of Fully Nonlinear Curvature Flows, James Alexander Mccoy Nov 2012

Self-Similar Solutions Of Fully Nonlinear Curvature Flows, James Alexander Mccoy

Dr James McCoy

We consider closed hypersurfaces which shrink self-similarly under a natural class of fully nonlinear curvature flows. For those flows in our class with speeds homogeneous of degree 1 and either convex or concave, we show that the only such hypersurfaces are shrinking spheres. In the setting of convex hypersurfaces, we show under a weaker second derivative condition on the speed that again only shrinking spheres are possible. For surfaces this result is extended in some cases by a different method to speeds of homogeneity greater than 1. Finally we show that self-similar hypersurfaces with sufficiently pinched principal curvatures, depending on …

A New Class Of Fully Nonlinear Curvature Flows, James A. Mccoy Nov 2012

A New Class Of Fully Nonlinear Curvature Flows, James A. Mccoy

Dr James McCoy

This article is about contraction by fully nonlinear curvature flows of convex hypersurfaces. As with previously considered flows, including the quasilinear mean curvature flow and a broad class of fully nonlinear curvature flows, solutions exist for a finite time and contract to a point. As with some other flows, including the mean curvature flow, a smaller class of fully nonlinear flows and the Gauss curvature flow for surfaces, under a suitable rescaling the solutions converge exponentially to spheres. We provide an introduction to the study of curvature flow of hypersurfaces with extensive references to most of the main areas of …

Dual Boundary Integral Formulation For 2-D Crack Problems, Xiaoping Lu, Wei-Liang Wu Nov 2012

Dual Boundary Integral Formulation For 2-D Crack Problems, Xiaoping Lu, Wei-Liang Wu

Xiaoping Lu

An efficient integral equation formulation for two-dimensional crack problems is proposed with the displacement equation being used on the outer boundary and the traction equation being used on one of the crack faces. Discontinuous quarter point elements are used to correctly model the displacement in the vicinity of crack tips. Using this formulation a general crack problem can be solved in a single-region formulation, and only one of the crack faces needs to be discretised. Once the relative displacements of the cracks are solved numerically, physical quantities of interest, such as crack tip stress intensity factors can be easily obtained. …

A New Exact Solution For Pricing European Options In A Two-State Regime-Switching Economy, Song-Ping Zhu, Alexander Badran, Xiaoping Lu Nov 2012

A New Exact Solution For Pricing European Options In A Two-State Regime-Switching Economy, Song-Ping Zhu, Alexander Badran, Xiaoping Lu

Xiaoping Lu

In this study, we derive a new exact solution for pricing European options in a two-state regime-switching economy. Two coupled Black-Scholes partial differential equations (PDEs) under the regime switching are solved using the Fourier Transform method. A key feature of the newly-derived solution is its simplicity in the form of a single integral with a real integrand, which leads to great computational efficiency in comparison with other closed-form solutions previously presented in the literature. Numerical examples are provided to demonstrate some interesting results obtained from our pricing formula.

Drought Mitigation Center: Faculty Publications

As the climate in the midwestern United States becomes increasingly variable because of global climate change, it is critical to provide tools to the agricultural community to ensure adaptability and profitability of agricultural cropping systems. When used by farmers and their advisors, agricultural decision support tools can reduce uncertainty and risks in the planning, operation, and management decisions of the farm enterprise. Agricultural advisors have historically played a key role in providing information and guidance in these decisions. However, little is known about what these advisors know or think about weather and climate information and their willingness to incorporate this …

Towards Green Business Process Management, Konstantin Hoesch-Klohe, Aditya K. Ghose, Lam-Son Le

Dr Lam-Son Le

There is a global consensus on the need to reduce our collective carbon footprint. While much research attention has focused on developing alternative energy sources, automotive technologies or waste disposal techniques, we often ignore the fact that the ability to optimize (existing) operations to reduce their emissions impact is fundamental to this exercise. We believe that by transforming the problem into the domain of Business Process Management (BPM) we can leverage the rich expertise in this field to address issues associated with identifying areas for improvement, understanding the implication and performing carbon footprint minimization. We will use the term “Green …

On Formalizing Inter-Process Relationships, Tri A. Kurniawan, Aditya K. Ghose, Lam-Son Le, Hoa Khanh Dam Nov 2012

On Formalizing Inter-Process Relationships, Tri A. Kurniawan, Aditya K. Ghose, Lam-Son Le, Hoa Khanh Dam

Dr Lam-Son Le

Most medium to large organizations support large collections of process designs, often stored in business process repositories. These processes are often inter-dependent. Managing such large collections of processes is not a trivial task. We argue that formalizing and establishing inter-process relationships play a critical role in that task leading to a machinery approach in the process repository management. We consider and propose three kinds of such relationships, namely part-whole, inter-operation and generalization-specialization, including their formal definitions, permitting us to develop a machinery approach. Analysis of the relationships relies on the semantically effects annotated process model in BPMN. This paper presents …

The Inhabitation Problem For Intersection Types, M. Bunder Nov 2012

The Inhabitation Problem For Intersection Types, M. Bunder

Dr Martin Bunder

In the system lambda ^ of intersection types, without w, the problem as to whether an arbitrary type has an inhabitant, has been shown to be undecidable by Urzyczyn in [9]. For one subsystem of lambda ^, that lacks the ^- introduction rule, the inhabitation problem has been shown to be decidable in Kurata and Takahashi [9]. The natural question that arises is: What other subsystems of lambda ^, have a decidable inhabitation problem? The work in [2], which classifies distinct and inhabitation-distinct subsystems of lambda ^, leads to the extension of the undecidability result to lambda ^ without the …

Child's Addition In The Stern-Brocot Tree, Bruce Bates, Martin Bunder, Keith Tognetti

Dr Martin Bunder

We use child's addition and cross-differencing to discover significant relationships for diagonals, paths and branches within the Stern-Brocot tree and the Stern-Brocot sequence. This allows us to develop results for continued fraction summation under child's addition.

Security Analysis Of Michael: The Ieee 802.11i Message Integrity Code, Jianyong Huang, Jennifer Seberry, Willy Susilo, Martin W. Bunder Nov 2012

Security Analysis Of Michael: The Ieee 802.11i Message Integrity Code, Jianyong Huang, Jennifer Seberry, Willy Susilo, Martin W. Bunder

Dr Martin Bunder

The latest IEEE 802.11i uses a keyed hash function, called Michael, as the message integrity code. This paper describes some properties and weaknesses of Michael. We provide a necessary and sufficient condition for finding collisions of Michael. Our observation reveals that the collision status of Michael only depends on the second last block message and the output of the block function in the third last round. We show that Michael is not collision-free by providing a method to find collisions of this keyed hash function. Moreover, we develop a method to find fixed points of Michael. If the output of …

Introducing N-Tree-Space: A Classification System For Knowledge Library Applications, E. Rayner, I. C. Piper, M. Bunder Nov 2012

Introducing N-Tree-Space: A Classification System For Knowledge Library Applications, E. Rayner, I. C. Piper, M. Bunder

Dr Martin Bunder

This paper identifies and defines the Knowledge Library Application (KLA) class. KLAs are an important class of information resource/knowledge management applications. It will be clear from the definition that KLAs are highly relevant to both the commercial and academic worlds and existing techniques such as keyword and tree classification, On-Line Analytical Processing (OLAP), and Formal Concept Analysis (FCA) do not provide key KLA features. N-Tree-Space (NTS), a technique detailed in this paper, enables the provision of these features and should facilitate the development of a range of KLAs that offer significant advantages over currently available software tools.

On Binary Reflected Gray Codes And Functions, Martin W. Bunder, Keith P. Tognetti, Glen Wheeler Nov 2012

On Binary Reflected Gray Codes And Functions, Martin W. Bunder, Keith P. Tognetti, Glen Wheeler

Dr Martin Bunder

The Binary Reflected Gray Code function b is defined as follows: If m is a nonnegative integer, then b(m) is the integer obtained when initial zeros are omitted from the binary reflected Gray code of length m. This paper examines this Gray code function and its inverse and gives simple algorithms to generate both. It also simplifies Conder’s result that the jth letter of the kth word of the binary reflected Gray code of length n, is (2n − 2n−j − 1 [2n − 2n−j−1 − k/2]) mod 2, by replacing the binomial coefficient by [(k-1)/(2n-j+1)+1/2].

Enhancing Effective Depth-Of-Field By Multi-Focus Image Fusion Using Morphological Techniques., Ishita De Ghosh Dr. Nov 2012

Enhancing Effective Depth-Of-Field By Multi-Focus Image Fusion Using Morphological Techniques., Ishita De Ghosh Dr.

Doctoral Theses

A scene to be photographed, usually includes objects at varying distances from the camera. Depth-of-field of a digital camera is the range of distance, all objects within which appear to be sharp in the image. Due to the low depth-of-field of the camera, images acquired by them often suffer from degradation called out-of-foc us blur. One way to enhance the effective depth-of-field is to acquire se veral images of a scene with focus on different parts of it and then combine these images into a single image in such a way that all regions of the scene are in focus. …

Statics And Dynamics Of Atomic Dark-Bright Solitons In The Presence Of Impurities, V. Achilleos, Panos Kevrekidis, V. M. Rothos, D. J. Frantzeskakis Nov 2012

Statics And Dynamics Of Atomic Dark-Bright Solitons In The Presence Of Impurities, V. Achilleos, Panos Kevrekidis, V. M. Rothos, D. J. Frantzeskakis

Panos Kevrekidis

Adopting a mean-field description for a two-component atomic Bose-Einstein condensate, we study the statics and dynamics of dark-bright solitons in the presence of localized impurities. We use adiabatic perturbation theory to derive an equation of motion for the dark-bright soliton center. We show that, counterintuitively, an attractive (repulsive) delta-like impurity, acting solely on the bright-soliton component, induces an effective localized barrier (well) in the effective potential felt by the soliton; this way, dark-bright solitons are reflected from (transmitted through) attractive (repulsive) impurities. Our analytical results for the small-amplitude oscillations of solitons are found to be in good agreement with results …

Deposition And Characterization Of Hydrophobic Coatings, Vipul Gupta Nov 2012

Deposition And Characterization Of Hydrophobic Coatings, Vipul Gupta

Theses and Dissertations

Hydrophobic coatings find application in various sectors of the economy including to electronics, textiles, optical devices, and in scientific and commercial equipment. These different applications demand that different hydrophobic coatings posses a range of properties that may include smoothness or roughness, thicknesses on the order of a monolayer or a micron, robustness or the ability to dissolve quickly, transparency or opacity, water resistance or water permeability, electrical conductivity, oleophobicity, etc. However, whatever the final/desired properties, deposition via dry-deposition processes offers significant advantages, including greater reproducibility, increased environmental friendliness, and cost effectiveness on an industrial scale. Herein I explore the chemical …

Case Study On The Pattern Change In Arabidopsis Thaliana Intron Sequence, Ren Zhang, Rachel Caldwell, Yan-Xia Lin, Jinda Kongcharoen, Yiren Yang Nov 2012

Case Study On The Pattern Change In Arabidopsis Thaliana Intron Sequence, Ren Zhang, Rachel Caldwell, Yan-Xia Lin, Jinda Kongcharoen, Yiren Yang

Associate Professor Yan-Xia Lin

A large portion in eukaryotic genomes is introns but their function is not yet fully elucidated. The aims of this study are to employ the generalized Bernoulli modeling approach to estimate the change points based on GC distribution in intron sequences of Arabidopsis thaliana and to investigate whether there is any correlation between gene properties (the gene expression level and the protein function) and these intron pattern changes. The influence of the intron length and the number of GC on the intron sequence pattern changes is demonstrated. Among the random sampled intron sequences, 10.71% have been identified to have pattern …
