Synthesis Of Al2tio5 And Its Effect On The Properties Of Chitosan-Nh4scn Polymer Electrolytes, Siti Rohana Majid, Hassan F., Woo H. J., Aziz N. A., Kufian M. Z.

Siti Rohana Majid

In this paper, Al2TiO5 ceramic material has been synthesised and used as filler in polymer electrolyte system to enhance the conductivity. The precursor sintered at 1,050 A degrees C and contained 0.08 mole of aluminium nitrate gives the best and complete formation of Al2TiO5. Composite polymer electrolytes of chitosan-NH4SCN containing different amount of home-made Al2TiO5 were prepared by solution casting. The addition of filler has enhanced the conductivity of polymer electrolyte. The sample 57 wt% chitosan-38 wt% NH4SCN-5 wt% Al2TiO5 exhibited the highest electrical conductivity of 2.10 x 10(-4) S cm(-1) at room temperature. The presence of the Al2TiO5 creates …

A Comparison Of Periodic Autoregressive And Dynamic Factor Models In Intraday Energy Demand Forecasting, Thomas Mestekemper, Goeran Kauermann, Michael Smith Dec 2012

A Comparison Of Periodic Autoregressive And Dynamic Factor Models In Intraday Energy Demand Forecasting, Thomas Mestekemper, Goeran Kauermann, Michael Smith

Michael Stanley Smith

We suggest a new approach for forecasting energy demand at an intraday resolution. Demand in each intraday period is modeled using semiparametric regression smoothing to account for calendar and weather components. Residual serial dependence is captured by one of two multivariate stationary time series models, with dimension equal to the number of intraday periods. These are a periodic autoregression and a dynamic factor model. We show the benefits of our approach in the forecasting of district heating demand in a steam network in Germany and aggregate electricity demand in the state of Victoria, Australia. In both studies, accounting for weather …

The Effect Of Antimony Trioxide On Poly (Vinyl Alcohol)-Lithium Perchlorate Based Polymer Electrolytes, Siti Rohana Majid, Lim C. S., Ramesh S. Dec 2012

The Effect Of Antimony Trioxide On Poly (Vinyl Alcohol)-Lithium Perchlorate Based Polymer Electrolytes, Siti Rohana Majid, Lim C. S., Ramesh S.

Siti Rohana Majid

A new type of inorganic filler antimony trioxide (Sb2O3) is used to prepare composite polymer electrolytes based on poly (vinyl alcohol) (PVA) and lithium perchlorate (LiClO4) by solution casting technique. The incorporation of Sb2O3 enhances the ionic conductivity at ambient temperature and exhibits the highest ionic conductivity value of 9.51 x 10(-5) S cm(-1) upon the addition of 6 wt% Sb2O3. Thermogravimetric analyses (TGA) reveal that the second weight loss is reduced. This shows the improvement in thermal stability of electrolyte film upon addition of Sb2O3. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) analyses show that the glass transition temperature (T-g) value decreases …

Uniform Gaussian Bounds For Subelliptic Heat Kernels And An Application To The Total Variation Flow Of Graphs Over Carnot Groups, Luca Capogna, Giovanna Citti, Maria Manfredini Dec 2012

Uniform Gaussian Bounds For Subelliptic Heat Kernels And An Application To The Total Variation Flow Of Graphs Over Carnot Groups, Luca Capogna, Giovanna Citti, Maria Manfredini

Luca Capogna

In this paper we study heat kernels associated with a Carnot group G, endowed with a family of collapsing left-invariant Riemannian metrics σε which converge in the Gromov- Hausdorff sense to a sub-Riemannian structure on G as ε→ 0. The main new contribution are Gaussian-type bounds on the heat kernel for the σε metrics which are stable as ε→0 and extend the previous time-independent estimates in [16]. As an application we study well posedness of the total variation flow of graph surfaces over a bounded domain in a step two Carnot group (G; σε ). We establish interior and boundary …

Vortex-Glass Phase Transition And Enhanced Flux Pinning In C 4+-Irradiated Bafe1.9ni0.1as2 Superconducting Single Crystals, M Shahbazi, X Wang, S Ghorbani, M Ionescu, Olga Shcherbakova, Frederick Wells, Alexey Pan, S Dou, K Choi

Frederick S Wells

We report the effects of C4+-irradiation on the superconducting properties of BaFe1.9Ni0.1As2 single crystal. The BaFe1.9Ni0.1As2 single crystal before and after C4+-irradiation was characterized by magnetic, magneto-transport and magneto-optical techniques over a wide range of magnetic fields (0-13 T) and temperatures (2-200 K). We demonstrate that the C 4+-irradiation significantly enhances the in-field critical current density (by a factor of up to 1.5 at 5 K) and induces enhanced flux jumping at 2 K, with only a small degradation (by 0.5 K) of the critical temperature, T c. The vortex phase diagram describing the evolution of the vortex-glass transition temperature …

Efficient Oxidation Of Arylmethylene Compounds Using Nano-Mno2, Baskar Nammalwar, Chelsea Fortenberry, Richard Bunce, Sathish Lageshetty, Kevin Ausman Dec 2012

Efficient Oxidation Of Arylmethylene Compounds Using Nano-Mno2, Baskar Nammalwar, Chelsea Fortenberry, Richard Bunce, Sathish Lageshetty, Kevin Ausman

Kevin D. Ausman

Nano-MnO2 has been developed as an efficient and mild reagent for the high-yield oxidation of arylmethylene compounds to the corresponding aldehydes and ketones as well as benzylic ethers to esters. The reagent is conveniently prepared and shows reactivity superior to synthetic (Attenburrow) MnO2 and commercial MnO2 under both microwave and conventional conditions. Typical reactions are performed using 25 wt % of nano-MnO2 relative to the substrate, and the reagent can be recycled up to six times without significant loss of activity. The observed conversions correlate well with surface-water content in the different MnO2 samples, as determined by thermogravimetric analysis.

Evolutionary Adaptation Of Marine Zooplankton To Global Change, Hans Dam Dec 2012

Evolutionary Adaptation Of Marine Zooplankton To Global Change, Hans Dam

Hans G. Dam

Predicting the response of the biota to global change remains a formidable endeavor. Zooplankton face challenges related to global warming, ocean acidification, the proliferation of toxic algal blooms, and increasing pollution, eutrophication, and hypoxia. They can respond to these changes by phenotypic plasticity or genetic adaptation. Using the concept of the evolution of reaction norms, I address how adaptive responses can be unequivocally discerned from phenotypic plasticity. To date, relatively few zooplankton studies have been designed for such a purpose. As case studies, I review the evidence for zooplankton adaptation to toxic algal blooms, hypoxia, and climate change. Predicting the …

Selective Nitration Of Chlorobenzene By No2 In The Alkali Zeolite Nazsm-5, Scott J. Kirkby Dec 2012

Selective Nitration Of Chlorobenzene By No2 In The Alkali Zeolite Nazsm-5, Scott J. Kirkby

Scott J. Kirkby

Chlorobenzene was reacted with NO2, in the initially acid-free zeolite NaZSM-5, to yield para-chloronitrobenzene exclusively. The precursors were loaded sequentially into self-supporting pellets of the zeolite, contained within a stainless steel cell, from the gas phase. The reaction proceeds spontaneously at room temperature. It is, however, very temperature dependent and effectively ceases at zero degrees Celsius. The reaction was monitored in situ using FT-IR. The active nitrating agent is formed from the partial electron donation by the NO2 to the Na+ cations present in the zeolite lattice. Under the reaction conditions, chlorobenzene is not readily mobile through the pore system; …

Variation Of Hyporheic Temperature Profiles In A Low Gradient Third-Order Agricultural Stream – A Statistical Approach, Vanessa Beach, Eric Wade Peterson Dec 2012

Variation Of Hyporheic Temperature Profiles In A Low Gradient Third-Order Agricultural Stream – A Statistical Approach, Vanessa Beach, Eric Wade Peterson

Eric Wade Peterson

Sediment size governs advection, controlling the hydraulic conductivity of the stratum, and conduction, influencing the amount of surface area in contact between the sediment particles. To understand the role of sediment particle size on thermal profiles within the hyporheic zone, a statistical approach, involving general summary statistics and time series cross-correlation, was employed. Data were collected along two riffles: Site 1: gravel (d50 = 3.9 mm) and Site 2: sand (d50 = 0.94 mm).Temperature probe grids collected 15-minute temperature data at 30, 60, 90, and 140 cm below the streambed surface over a 6-month period. Surface water and air temperature …

Connecting Big Data With Big Decisions: Ideas For Synthesizing Analytics And Decision Analysis, Jeffrey Keisler Dec 2012

Connecting Big Data With Big Decisions: Ideas For Synthesizing Analytics And Decision Analysis, Jeffrey Keisler

Jeffrey Keisler

This paper describes an approach to connect decision analysis models with outputs of analytic methods applied to various types of big data. Decision analysis models focus on issues of concern to a decision maker and incorporate use of a range of methods and axioms to develop insights about what the decision maker should do. In particular, decision analysis models typically use subjective judgments from the decision maker to describe beliefs about the likelihood of events and the desirability of outcomes. In order for human judgments to be improved by the availability of large amounts of data and processing power, it …

Location And Tracking Of Mobile Devices: Überveillance Stalks The Streets, Katina Michael, Roger Clarke Dec 2012

Location And Tracking Of Mobile Devices: Überveillance Stalks The Streets, Katina Michael, Roger Clarke

Professor Katina Michael

During the last decade, location-tracking and monitoring applications have proliferated, in mobile cellular and wireless data networks, and through self-reporting by applications running in smartphones that are equipped with onboard global positioning system (GPS) chipsets. It is now possible to locate a smartphone-user's location not merely to a cell, but to a small area within it. Innovators have been quick to capitalise on these location-based technologies for commercial purposes, and have gained access to a great deal of sensitive personal data in the process. In addition, law enforcement utilise these technologies, can do so inexpensively and hence can track many …

Creating An Improved Version Using Noisy Ocr From Multiple Editions, David Wemhoener, Ismet Zeki, R. Manmatha Dec 2012

Creating An Improved Version Using Noisy Ocr From Multiple Editions, David Wemhoener, Ismet Zeki, R. Manmatha

R. Manmatha

This paper evaluates an automated scheme for aligning and combining optical character recognition (OCR) output from three scans of a book to generate a composite version with fewer OCR errors. While there has been some previous work on aligning multiple OCR versions of the same scan, the scheme introduced in this paper does not require that scans be from the same copy of the book, or even the same edition. The three OCR outputs are combined using an algorithm which builds upon an technique which aligns two sequences at a time. In the algorithm a multiple sequence alignment of the …
