High-Latitude Short-Period Mesospheric Gravity Wave Dynamics And Winter Climatology, Michael R. Negale, Kim Nielsen, Mike J. Taylor, Dominique Pautet, Margit Dyrland
Michael Negale
Short-period gravity wave observations over the Arctic region are few and their impact on the Arctic mesosphere lower thermosphere region via momentum deposition is of high interest. The Mesospheric Airglow Imaging and Dynamics project was initiated in January 2011 to investigate the presence and dynamics of these waves over the interior of Alaska. Observations were made from Poker Flat Research Range (PFRR) using an all-sky imager. This site provides an exceptional opportunity to establish a long-term climatology of short-period gravity waves in the Arctic Region. We present summary measurements of prominent gravity waves over two consecutive winters and compare their …
Towards A Conceptual Model Of User Acceptance Of Location-Based Emergency Services, Anas Aloudat, Katina Michael
Towards A Conceptual Model Of User Acceptance Of Location-Based Emergency Services, Anas Aloudat, Katina Michael
Professor Katina Michael
This paper investigates the introduction of location-based services by government as part of an all-hazards approach to modern emergency management solutions. Its main contribution is in exploring the determinants of an individual’s acceptance or rejection of location services. The authors put forward a conceptual model to better predict why an individual would accept or reject such services, especially with respect to emergencies. While it may be posited by government agencies that individuals would unanimously wish to accept life-saving and life-sustaining location services for their well-being, this view remains untested. The theorised determinants include: visibility of the service solution, perceived service …

Molecular Insights Into The Reversible Formation Of Tau Protein Fibrils, Yin Luo, Paul Dinkel, Xiang Yu, Martin Margittai, Jie Zheng, Ruth Nussinov, Guanghong Wei, Buyong Ma
Jie Zheng
We computationally and experimentally showed that tau protein fibrils can be formed at high temperature. When cooled, the fibrils dissociate back to monomers. Heparin promotes tau fibril formation and prevents its reversion. Our results revealed the physicochemical mechanism of reversible formation of tau fibrils.
Asymptotic Behavior Of A T Test Robust To Cluster Heterogeneity, Douglas G. Steigerwald
Asymptotic Behavior Of A T Test Robust To Cluster Heterogeneity, Douglas G. Steigerwald
Douglas G. Steigerwald
We study the behavior of a cluster-robust t statistic and make two principle contributions. First, we relax the restriction of previous asymptotic theory that clusters have identical size, and establish that the cluster-robust t statistic continues to have a Gaussian asymptotic null distribution. Second, we determine how variation in cluster sizes, together with other sources of cluster heterogeneity, affect the behavior of the test statistic. To do so, we determine the sample specific measure of cluster heterogeneity that governs this behavior and show that the measure depends on how three quantities vary over clusters: cluster size, the cluster specific error …

Tuning Of Magnetization In Vertical Graphenes By Plasma-Enabled Chemical Conversion Of Organic Precursors With Different Oxygen Content, Zengji Yue
Zengji Yue
Different magnetization in vertical graphenes fabricated by plasma-enabled chemical conversion of organic precursors with various oxygen atom contents and bonding energies was achieved. The graphenes grown from fat-like precursors exhibit magnetization up to 8 emu g−1, whereas the use of sugar-containing precursors results in much lower numbers. A relatively high Curie temperature exceeding 600 K was also demonstrated.

Approaching Cave Level Identification With Gis: A Case Study Of Carter Caves, Brianne Jacoby, Eric Wade Peterson, John C. Kostelnick, Toby J. Dogwiler
Eric Wade Peterson
Cave passages that are found at similar elevations are grouped together and called levels. The current understanding is that passages within a level are speleogenetically linked to a common static baselevel or stratigraphic control. Cave levels have provided an interpretive framework for deciphering cave development, landscape evolution, and climatic changes. Cosmogenic dating has been successfully used to interpret levels in Mammoth Cave and the Cumberland Plateau; however, this technique is expensive and there are limited funding resources available. Geographic information systems may be used as preliminary procedures to identify cave levels and constrain the timing of level development. A GIS …

Network Performance: Does It Really Matter To Users And By How Much?, Ramesh Sitaraman
Network Performance: Does It Really Matter To Users And By How Much?, Ramesh Sitaraman
Ramesh Sitaraman
Network performance has been the subject of much research over the past decades. However, the impact of performance on a network’s users is much less understood from a scientific standpoint. This gap in our knowledge is particularly stark since the primary role of real-world network performance is to increase user satisfaction, and encourage user behaviors that lead to greater monetization. As an example, consider the video delivery ecosystem consisting of content delivery networks (CDNs), video content providers, and their users. Content providers use CDNs to deliver videos to their users with higher performance. In turn, content providers expect the higher …

Relation Extraction With Matrix Factorization And Universal Schemas, Sebastian Riedel, Limin Yao, Andrew Mccallum, Benjamin M. Marlin
Benjamin M. Marlin
Traditional relation extraction predicts relations within some fixed and finite target schema. Machine learning approaches to this task require either manual annotation or, in the case of distant supervision, existing structured sources of the same schema. The need for existing datasets can be avoided by using a universal schema: the union of all involved schemas (surface form predicates as in OpenIE, and relations in the schemas of preexisting databases). This schema has an almost unlimited set of relations (due to surface forms), and supports integration with existing structured data (through the relation types of existing databases). To populate a database …

Mimicking The Binding And Unbinding Of Fe3+ With Transferrin Using A Single Biomimetic Nanochannel, Chao Zhao, Xiaosi Li, Lingyan Li, Xiong Gong, Yung Chang, Jie Zheng
Jie Zheng
A new type of apo-Tf functionalized nanochannel is developed to achieve the specific and selective binding and unbinding of Fe3+ in a multiple and reversible manner via a protein-conformation-gating mechanism. This ion-responsive biomimetic nanochannel provides a simple, robust, and promising model for studying other biological processes.

Reversible Actuating And Writing Behaviours Of A Head-To-Side Connected Main-Chain Photochromic Liquid Crystalline Polymer, Dae-Yoon Kim, Sang-A Lee, Hyong Jong Choi, Liang-Chy Chien, Myong-Hoon Lee, Kwang-Un Jeong
Liang-Chy Chien
A photochromic liquid crystalline (LC) polymer {4-butoxy-2'-(4-hex-5-enyloxy)-4'-(4-hex-5-enyl-oxybenzyloxy)azobenzene, abbreviated as PLCP} was newly synthesized via the acrylic diene metathesis polymerization (H. J. Choi, et al., J. Mater. Chem., 2009, 19, 7124). Utilizing the combined techniques of differential scanning calorimetry, cross-polarized optical microscopy, and wide-angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD), it was realized that PLCP formed a nematic (N) phase below the isotropization temperature (T-NI = 145 degrees C) and the N phase turned to the glassy N phase below the glass transition temperature (T-g = 24 degrees C). Especially, two-dimensional (2D) WAXD of the uniaxially oriented PLCP fibre indicated that the N phase …
On The Size Accuracy Of Combination Tests, Chris Lloyd
On The Size Accuracy Of Combination Tests, Chris Lloyd
Chris J. Lloyd
One element of the analysis of adaptive clinical trials is combining the evidence from several (often two) stages. When the endpoint is binary, standard single stage tests statistics do not control size well. Yet the combined test might not be valid if the single stage tests are not. The purpose of this paper is to numerically and theoretically examine the extent to which combining basic tests statistics mitigates or magnifies the size violation of the final test.

Near-Diffraction-Limited And Low-Haze Electro-Optical Tunable Liquid Crystal Lens With Floating Electrodes, Liwei Li, Doug Bryant, Tony Van Heugten, Philip J. Bos
Philip J. Bos
A near-diffraction-limited, low-haze and tunable liquid crystal (LC) lens is presented. Building on an understanding of the key factors that have limited the performance of lenses based on liquid crystals, we show a simple design whose optical quality is similar to a high quality glass lens. It uses 'floating' electrodes to provide a smooth, controllable applied potential profile across the aperture to manage the phase profile.

A Photoswitchable And Thermally Stable Axially Chiral Dithienylperfluorocyclopentene Dopant With High Helical Twisting Power, Yannian Li, Mengfei Wang, Augustine Urbas, Quan Li
Quan Li
A chiral dithienylperfluorocyclopentene molecule bearing two bridged binaphthyl units was designed and synthesized by a Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling reaction between chiral binaphthyl iodide and dithienylperfluorocyclopentene-derived bis(boronic ester). Its photoresponsive properties were investigated in both organic solvent and liquid crystal media. The UV-vis spectra exhibited typical photochromic changes of diarylethenes upon UV irradiation. The CD spectral changes upon light irradiation indicated that the conformation of binaphthyl units and the chiroptical properties of this molecule could be modulated by light. More importantly, when using as a chiral dopant in nematic liquid crystals, this molecule could induce cholesteric liquid crystals with very high helical …
