Winter Climatology Of Short-Period Polar Mesospheric Gravity Waves Observed Over Poker Flat Research Range, Alaska (65 N, 147 W), Michael R. Negale, Kim Nielsen, Mike J. Taylor, Dominique Pautet

Michael Negale

Short-period gravity wave observations over the Arctic region are few and their impact on the Arctic mesosphere lower thermosphere region via momentum deposition is of high interest. The Mesospheric Airglow Imaging and Dynamics project was initiated in January 2011 to investigate the presence and dynamics of these waves over the interior of Alaska. Observations were made from Poker Flat Research Range (PFRR) using an all-sky imager. This site provides an exceptional opportunity to establish a long-term climatology of short-period gravity waves in the Arctic Region. We present summary measurements of prominent gravity waves over two consecutive winters and compare their …

Local Fractional Variational Iteration Method For Fractal Heat Transfer In Silk Cocoon Hierarchy, Ji-Huan He

Ji-Huan He

A local fractional equation is established for fractal heat transfer in silk cocoon hierarchy, and the local fractional variational iteration method is adopted to solve the equation analytically. The result can well explain the intriguing phenomenon for pupa's survival at extremes of weather from negative 40 degrees to 50 degrees.

Evaluation Of The In Situ Ichthyoplankton Imaging System (Isiis): Comparison With The Traditional (Bongo Net) Sampler, Robert K. Cowen, Adam T. Greer, Cedric M. Guigand, Jonathan A. Hare, David E. Richardson, Harvey J. Walsh Dec 2012

Evaluation Of The In Situ Ichthyoplankton Imaging System (Isiis): Comparison With The Traditional (Bongo Net) Sampler, Robert K. Cowen, Adam T. Greer, Cedric M. Guigand, Jonathan A. Hare, David E. Richardson, Harvey J. Walsh

Adam T. Greer

Plankton and larval fish sampling programs often are limited by a balance between sampling frequency (for precision) and costs. Advancements in sampling techniques hold the potential to add considerable efficiency and, therefore, add sampling frequency to improve precision. We compare a newly developed plankton imaging system, In Situ Ichthyoplankton Imaging System (ISIIS), with a bongo sampler, which is a traditional plankton sampling gear developed in the 1960s. Comparative sampling was conducted along 2 transects ~30–40 km long. Over 2 days, we completed 36 ISIIS tow-yo undulations and 11 bongo oblique tows, each from the surface to within 10 m of …

The Computation Of Cyclic Peptide With Prolin-Prolin Bond As Fusion Inhibitor Of Denv Envelope Protein Through Molecular Docking And Molecular Dynamics Simulation, Arli A. Parikesit, Hilyatuz Zahroh, Andreas S. Nugroho, Amalia Hapsari, Usman Sumo F. Tambunan

Arli A Parikesit

A disease that caused by dengue virus (DENV) has become the major health problem of the world. Nowadays, no effective treatment is available to overcome the disease due to the level of dengue virus pathogeneses. A novel treatment method such as antiviral drug is highly necessary for coping with the dengue disease. Envelope protein is one of the non-structural proteins of DENV, which engaged in the viral fusion process. It penetrates into the host cell to transfer its genetic material into the targeted cell followed by replication and establishment of new virus. Thus, the envelope protein can be utilized as …

The Future Prospects Of Embedded Microchips In Humans As Unique Identifiers: The Risks Versus The Rewards, Katina Michael, M.G. Michael Dec 2012

The Future Prospects Of Embedded Microchips In Humans As Unique Identifiers: The Risks Versus The Rewards, Katina Michael, M.G. Michael

Professor Katina Michael

Microchip implants for humans are not new. Placing heart pacemakers in humans for prosthesis is now considered a straightforward procedure. In more recent times we have begun to use brain pacemakers for therapeutic purposes to combat illnesses such as epilepsy, Parkinson’s Disease, and severe depression. Microchips are even being placed inside prosthetic knees and hips during restorative procedures to help in the gathering of post-operative analytics that can aid rehabilitation further. While medical innovations that utilise microchips abound, over the last decade we have begun to see the potential use of microchip implants for non-medical devices in humans, namely for …

Bayesian Approaches To Copula Modelling, Michael S. Smith Dec 2012

Bayesian Approaches To Copula Modelling, Michael S. Smith

Michael Stanley Smith

Copula models have become one of the most widely used tools in the applied modelling of multivariate data. Similarly, Bayesian methods are increasingly used to obtain efficient likelihood-based inference. However, to date, there has been only limited use of Bayesian approaches in the formulation and estimation of copula models. This article aims to address this shortcoming in two ways. First, to introduce copula models and aspects of copula theory that are especially relevant for a Bayesian analysis. Second, to outline Bayesian approaches to formulating and estimating copula models, and their advantages over alternative methods. Copulas covered include Archimedean, copulas constructed …

Aging Population Scenarios: An Australian Experience, Chris Lloyd Dec 2012

Aging Population Scenarios: An Australian Experience, Chris Lloyd

Chris J. Lloyd

One element of the analysis of adaptive clinical trials is combining the evidence from several (often two) stages. When the endpoint is binary, standard single stage tests statistics do not control size well. Yet the combined test might not be valid if the single stage tests are not. The purpose of this paper is to numerically and theoretically examine the extent to which combining basic tests statistics mitigates or magnifies the size violation of the final test.

Romans 1:18-2:29: A Stylometric Reconsideration, Keith L. Yoder Dec 2012

Romans 1:18-2:29: A Stylometric Reconsideration, Keith L. Yoder

Keith L. Yoder

Here I use the tools of multivariate data analysis to reconsider the proposal that Romans 1:18-2:29 was not originally composed by Paul. I examine the distributions of the 35 most frequent words in the New Testament epistolary Greek text, using Correspondence Analysis, Cluster Analysis, and Linear Discriminant Analysis. These tests jointly reveal a distinct statistical demarcation between Romans 1:18-29 and the undisputed Pauline letters, as well as differentiation between the undisputed Paulines and all the other letters of the New Testament. Data analysis thus supports the proposal that Romans 1:18-2:29 is a non-Pauline text.

Note of 12 September 2018: This …

Temperature-Dependent Absorption Cross-Section Measurements Of 1-Butene (1-C4h8) In Vuv And Ir, Et-Touhami Es-Sebbar, Yves Benilan, Aamir Farooq

Dr. Et-touhami Es-sebbar

Vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) and infrared (IR) absorption cross-section measurements of 1-butene (1-C4H8; CH2=CHCH2CH3; Butylene) are reported over the temperature range of 296–529 K. The VUV measurements are performed between 115 and 205 nm using synchrotron radiation as a tunable VUV light source. Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy is employed to measure absorption cross-section and band strengths in the IR region between 1.54 and 25 μm (∼6500–400 cm−1). The measured room-temperature VUV and IR absorption cross-sections are compared with available literature data and are found to be in good agreement. The oscillator strength for the electronic transition (A1A′→X1A′) around 150–205 nm …

Bayesian Methods For Expression-Based Integration, Elizabeth M. Jennings, Jeffrey S. Morris, Raymond J. Carroll, Ganiraju C. Manyam, Veera Baladandayuthapani Dec 2012

Bayesian Methods For Expression-Based Integration, Elizabeth M. Jennings, Jeffrey S. Morris, Raymond J. Carroll, Ganiraju C. Manyam, Veera Baladandayuthapani

Jeffrey S. Morris

We propose methods to integrate data across several genomic platforms using a hierarchical Bayesian analysis framework that incorporates the biological relationships among the platforms to identify genes whose expression is related to clinical outcomes in cancer. This integrated approach combines information across all platforms, leading to increased statistical power in finding these predictive genes, and further provides mechanistic information about the manner in which the gene affects the outcome. We demonstrate the advantages of the shrinkage estimation used by this approach through a simulation, and finally, we apply our method to a Glioblastoma Multiforme dataset and identify several genes potentially …

Energy Transitions In Kenya's Tea Sector: A Wind Energy Assessment, Erik Edward Nordman Dec 2012

Energy Transitions In Kenya's Tea Sector: A Wind Energy Assessment, Erik Edward Nordman

Erik Edward Nordman

Kenya’s tea sector provides livelihoods for more than 500,000 farmers but energy access in the region remains limited. Clean, affordable distributed energy systems could transform the tea-growing regions by lowering tea production costs and increasing farmer profits. On-site generation could power tea factories and enhance grid stability by reducing electricity draw from the grid. Wind power’s potential in Kenya’s tea regions is unknown. A pre-feasibility study using the Solar and Wind Energy Resource Assessment (SWERA) dataset revealed that 29 percent of Kenya’s tea farms have wind resources that could be suitable for development. There were more “moderate”-rated tea farms west …

A Case-Control Study Of Physical Activity Patterns And Risk Of Non-Fatal Myocardial Infarction, Jian Gong, Hannia Campos, Mark Fiecas, Stephen Mcgarvey, Robert Goldberg, Caroline Richardson, Ana Baylin

Mark Fiecas

Background The interactive effects of different types of physical activity on cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk have not been fully considered in previous studies. We aimed to identify physical activity patterns that take into account combinations of physical activities and examine the association between derived physical activity patterns and risk of acute myocardial infarction (AMI). Methods We examined the relationship between physical activity patterns, identified by principal component analysis (PCA), and AMI risk in a case-control study of myocardial infarction in Costa Rica (N=4172), 1994-2004. The component scores derived from PCA and total METS were used in natural cubic spline models …

Quantifying Temporal Correlations: A Test-Retest Evaluation Of Functional Connectivity In Resting-State Fmri, Mark Fiecas, Hernando Ombao, Dan Van Lunen, Richard Baumgartner, Alexandre Coimbra, Dai Feng Dec 2012

Quantifying Temporal Correlations: A Test-Retest Evaluation Of Functional Connectivity In Resting-State Fmri, Mark Fiecas, Hernando Ombao, Dan Van Lunen, Richard Baumgartner, Alexandre Coimbra, Dai Feng

Mark Fiecas

There have been many interpretations of functional connectivity and proposed measures of temporal correlations between BOLD signals across different brain areas. These interpretations yield from many studies on functional connectivity using resting-state fMRI data that have emerged in recent years. However, not all of these studies used the same metrics for quantifying the temporal correlations between brain regions. In this paper, we use a public-domain test–retest resting-state fMRI data set to perform a systematic investigation of the stability of the metrics that are often used in resting-state functional connectivity (FC) studies. The fMRI data set was collected across three different …
