Modelling And Parameter Identification For A Nonlinear Time-Delay System In Microbial Batch Fermentation, Chongyang Liu
Modelling And Parameter Identification For A Nonlinear Time-Delay System In Microbial Batch Fermentation, Chongyang Liu
Chongyang Liu
Mathematical modelling and parameter identification of a microbial batch fermentation process is considered in this paper. In view of the existence of time delays, a nonlinear time-delay system is firstly proposed to formulate the fermentation process. Some important properties are also discussed. Taking the errors between the computational values and the experimental data as the cost function, a parameter identification model subject to continuous state constraints and parameter constraints is then presented. To seek the optimal time delay and the optimal kinetic parameters, an improved differential evolution algorithm in conjunction with the constraint transcription technique is developed. Finally, numerical results …

Interaction of high-power laser radiation with rarefied, fully ionized plasmas is rich in nonlinear collective phenomena. It is essentially three-dimensional and is dominated by the excitation of various modes of plasma oscillations, most important of which are electron Langmuir waves. These waves may trap externally injected electrons or initially quiescent plasma electrons, accelerating them to GeV-scale energies. Laser pulses can also launch collisionless shocks, which may accelerate plasma ions to MeV energies. Furthermore, relativistic mass effect and electron density perturbations by the radiation pressure cause laser pulse self-focusing and filamentation, leading to the radiation pulse self-guiding over many Rayleigh lengths. …

Interactive Visualization Of New Jersey Gang Data, Manfred Minimair
Manfred Minimair
This article describes the design and functionality of an online visualization software of data from a survey on gang activities in New Jersey municipalities. The visualization enables the user to explore the distribution of numbers of gang sets across different municipalities in New Jersey, and study certain derived information. The purpose of the visualization is to make data from the gang survey easily and universally accessible through some engaging visual display, to facilitate seamless exploration of the data, and to thus foster discourse on the data among experts and the general public. In order to achieve these goals, bubble charts, …

Synthesis Of Gold Nanoparticles Using A Stainless Steel Mesh, Thi Hiep Han, Mohammad Mansoob Khan Dr, S Kalathil, J Lee, M H. Cho
Dr. Mohammad Mansoob Khan
A novel, rapid, one-pot, and facile approach was developed to synthesize positively charged gold nanoparticles [(+) AuNPs] by employing an aqueous solution of HAuCl4·3H2O as a precursor at 30 °C and a stainless-steel mesh as a reducing agent. The penetration of Cl− ions into the stainless-steel surface results in corrosion on the stainless-steel surface and excretion of electrons which are used for reduction of Au3+ → Au0. As a result, (+) AuNPs 5-20 nm in size, mostly monodispersed, were synthesized within 3 h. The as-synthesized AuNPs were charaterized by UV-vis, DLS, XRD, TEM, HR-TEM, EDX and SAED. The utilization of …

Positively Charged Gold Nanoparticles Synthesized By Electrochemically Active Biofilm – A Biogenic Approach, Mohammad Mansoob Khan Dr, S. Kalathil, J. Lee, Moo Hwan Cho
Dr. Mohammad Mansoob Khan
Positively charged gold nanoparticles [(+) AuNPs] of 5-20 nm were synthesized by using electrochemically active biofilm (EAB) formed on a stainless steel mesh, within 30 minutes, in aqueous solution containing HAuCl4 as a precursor and sodium acetate as an electron donor. Electrochemically active bacteria present on biofilm oxidize the sodium acetate by producing electrons. Simultaneously, stainless steel also provides electrons because of the Cl− ions penetration into the stainless steel. Combined effect of both the EAB and stainless steel mesh enhances the availability of electrons for the reduction of Au3+ in the solution, which makes this synthesis efficient and fast. …

A Simple Life And A Desire To ‘Give Something Big’, Maureen E. Schlangen
Maureen E. Schlangen
A beloved chemistry professor who taught almost every doctor, dentist and scientist in UD’s alumni ranks from the 1950s through the 1980s is making a difference today to hundreds more. In 2001, a year after chemistry professor Carl I. Michaelis died, the University received a remarkable bequest of $1.7 million — part of the estate he’d built with a modest salary, a life lived simply and an investment portfolio that he added to but never subtracted from. Ten years ago, 16 students received the first awards from Michaelis’ endowed fund. Since then, it’s yielded 251 scholarships totaling more than $622,000.
Spin Scattering In Manganese Doped Nickel, Ken Podolak
Spin Scattering In Manganese Doped Nickel, Ken Podolak
Dr. Ken Podolak
Spin scattering characteristics of nickel doped with manganese are compared to nickel doped with iron and chromium in nickel. Conclusions are made based on the spin characteristics of the nickel samples doped with manganese with varying percentages in a host nickel crystal. Manganese doping increases the magnetic exchange splitting of nickel, similar to doping with iron and opposite to doping with chromium. On the other hand, manganese doping behaves different from iron with respect the ratio of the majority to minority spin carriers and the ratio of their lifetimes. While iron doping affects both ratios strongly, manganese and chromium doping …

Varying-Smoother Models For Functional Responses, Philip T. Reiss, Lei Huang, Huaihou Chen, Stan Colcombe
Philip T. Reiss
This paper studies estimation of a smooth function f(x,v) when we are given functional responses of the form f(x, ·) + error, but scientific interest centers on the collection of functions f(·,v) for different v. The motivation comes from studies of human brain development, in which x denotes age whereas v refers to brain locations. Analogously to varying-coefficient models, in which the mean response is linear in x, the “varying-smoother” models that we consider exhibit nonlinear dependence on x that varies smoothly with v. We discuss three approaches to estimating varying-smoother models: (a) methods that employ a tensor product penalty; …

The goal of the assignment was to familiarize students with what it means to learn mathematics outside of a classroom environment. This is connected to the main goal of the course, which is to develop skills in proof writing and in technical presentations.

Information Literacy In The Discipline, Mellon Grant For Math 310 Partnership With D. Roberts, Crystal Boyce, Daniel Roberts

As of now, MATH 310 has neither a required writing component nor an assignment that deals with information literacy. We are proposing the implementation of a new assignment that would incorporate both of these components. This assignment would have multiple stages spread over approximately a one-month time period.

Biomarker And Sedimentological Investigations Of Mis 8 Through Mis 12 From Lake El'gygytgyn, Ne Arctic Russia, Jeremy H. Wei, Julie Brigham-Grette, David Finkelstein, Isla S. Castañeda

Multiple proxy analysis of lake sediment records are crucial for understanding changes in environmental and climate conditions over historical and geological time. Most recently, the use of biomarker proxies coupled with sedimentological investigations provides a new approach for gaining insight into the lake processes that capture information about past climate change. This approach is applied here to better understand the paleoclimate record from Lake El’gygytgyn in Western Beringia. Multiple organic geochemical compound concentrations were measure as proxies for both aquatic and terrestrial biological productivity. Measurements of n-alkane (plant leaf waxes) as well as concentrations of the compounds arborinol (marker for …
