Cognitive Engagement During Group Learning Activities In Chemistry Courses: An Analysis Of Student Discourse, Safaa Youssef El-Mansy

Dissertations and Theses

As educators, our goal is to help our students be successful, but in order to accomplish this, we need to understand what factors contribute to student success. One factor, small-group active learning, has been correlated to improved academic outcomes; however, the magnitude of this improvement can vary across different courses, different types of group work, and even across courses that use the same group work structure. Therefore, it is important to understand what aspects of group work contribute to its effectiveness. The work presented in this dissertation investigated one specific aspect: students’ cognitive engagement. This was done by analyzing the …

Machine Learning Faculty Publications

Non-terrestrial networks (NTNs) are expected to play a pivotal role in the future wireless ecosystem. Due to its high-dynamic characteristics, the accurate estimation and compensation of carrier frequency offset (CFO) are crucial for supporting 5G new radio (NR) enabled satellite direct access. With emphasis on ensuring reliable uplink synchronization, we propose a clustering-neural network based CFO estimation scheme by virtue of NR random access preambles. By leveraging the sparsity and regularity of input samples, the proposed scheme can achieve fast and precise prediction of CFOs, while establishing robustness against time uncertainty and channel variation within a satellite beam. Simulation results …

Revealing The Core Dynamics Of Vesta: Insights From Experimental Investigations Of Electrical Resistivity And Thermal Conductivity, Oluwasanmi A. Orole Mr

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Insights from high pressure and temperature experiments involving in-situ measurements of the electrical resistivity of Fe-5wt%Ni at temperatures of up to 2000 K, under pressures of 2-5 GPa in a 1000-ton cubic-anvil press have been used to reveal Vesta’s core dynamics. The Wiedemann–Franz law was used to calculate the thermal conductivity from the measured electrical resistivity data. Comparing the findings of this study with prior investigations on both pure Fe and Fe-10wt%Ni indicates that an increase in Ni ranging from 0-10wt% has negligible effect on the electrical resistivity of Fe alloys. By comparing the range of estimated heat flux through …

Taking Songs To Heart: An Investigation Into Musical Appreciation, Anna Kate Lockhart, Eric A. Febles, Valeria Draine, Kaitlin Pendasulo

Science University Research Symposium (SURS)

Abstract

Music cross-culturally occupies a central part of day-to-day living (Trehub et al., 2015). Research has demonstrated music’s consistent ability to modulate emotional states, through the investigation of properties like tempo and key (Res, 2011; Bella, 2001; Jongwan,, 2018; Schellenberg, 2010). Heartbeat is a steady rhythm that each human alive and well experiences daily, and heart rate, specifically the resting heart rate, has been suggested to set a baseline rhythm that may influence perception of musical valence (Koelsch & Jancke, 2015). The current study aims to investigate this hypothesis by establishing a resting heart rate level and modulating the speed …

Domain Specific Feature Representation Learning For Diverse Temporal Data, Farhan Asif Chowdhury Nov 2023

Domain Specific Feature Representation Learning For Diverse Temporal Data, Farhan Asif Chowdhury

Computer Science ETDs

Humans can leverage domain context to recognize novel patterns and categories based on limited known examples. In contrast, computational learning methods are not adept at exploiting context and require sufficient labeled examples to achieve similar accuracy. Many temporal data domain, for example, seismic signals and oil mining sensor data, requires domain expert annotation, which is both costly and time-consuming. The dependency on training data limits the applicability of machine learning algorithms for domains with limited labeled data. This dissertation aims to address this gap by developing temporal mining algorithms that exploit domain context to learn discriminative feature representation from limited …

Probability Distributions Arising In Connection With The Inspection Paradox For Bernoulli Trials., James E. Marengo, Anne Marino Himes, W. Cade Reinberger, David L. Farnsworth

Articles

In renewal theory, the Inspection Paradox refers to the fact that an interarrival period in a renewal process which contains a fixed inspection time tends to be longer than one for the corresponding uninspected process. We focus on the paradox for Bernoulli trials. Probability distributions and moments for the lengths of the interarrival periods are derived for the inspected process, and we compare them to those for the uninspected case.

Assessing The Robustness Of Sound Horizon-Free Determinations Of The Hubble Constant, Tristan L. Smith, V. Poulin, T. Simon

Physics & Astronomy Faculty Works

The Hubble tension can be addressed by modifying the sound horizon (rs) before recombination, triggering interest in early universe estimates of the Hubble constant, H0, independent of rs. Constraints on H0 from an rs-free analysis of the full shape BOSS galaxy power spectra within Λ CDM were recently reported and used to comment on the viability of physics beyond Λ CDM. Here we demonstrate that rs-free analyses with current data depend on both the model and the priors placed on the cosmological parameters, such that Λ CDM analyses …

We present detailed characterization of laser driven fusion and neutron production (∼105/second) employing 8 mJ, 40fs laser pulses on a thin (< 1 µm) D2O liquid sheet employing a measurement suite. At relativistic intensity (∼5×1018W/cm2) and high repetition-rate (1 kHz), the system produces consistent D-D fusion, allowing for consistent neutron generation. Evidence of D-D fusion neutron production is verified b y a measurement suite with three independent detection systems: an EJ-309 organic scintillator with pulse-shape discrimination, a 3He proportional counter, and a set of 36 bubble detectors. Time-of-flight analysis of the scintillator data shows …

The Effects Of Priming On Moral Judgement, Lilly E. Rogers, Anna Lee, Chris Toepher, Zali White Nov 2023

The Effects Of Priming On Moral Judgement, Lilly E. Rogers, Anna Lee, Chris Toepher, Zali White

Science University Research Symposium (SURS)

Forming judgments and making decisions based on those judgments is an important and inescapable part of life. Moral decision-making often affects oneself and the people surrounding them. Previous literature has suggested that the act of making moral and ethical decisions can be separated and explained using various theoretical perspectives, two of the most prominent being utilitarianism and absolute deontology (Scott, 2012). Applying and categorizing decision-making into either of these categories has been shown and suggested to largely depend on the priming of a decision, with positive priming leading to more utilitarian decision-making (Broeders et al. 2011). It has further been …

Monitoring Brain Region-Specific Control Of Protein Turnover And Concentration Using Proteomics, Rebecca Suzanne Burlett Nov 2023

Monitoring Brain Region-Specific Control Of Protein Turnover And Concentration Using Proteomics, Rebecca Suzanne Burlett

Theses and Dissertations

Regulation of metabolism is vital to health and lies at the core of many different diseases. The breakdown of metabolisms' regulation within the brain can lead to neurological disease like Alzheimer's Disease (AD). AD is known to affect brain regions responsible for memory and memory processing like the hippocampus and entorhinal cortex. The regulation of these regions' protein quality, synthesis, and degradation deviate from 'normal' or 'healthy' levels when AD is happening. It is known there is a breakdown of regulation in those regions; however, little is known about the specifics of regulation in healthy brains regions or how it …

Evaluating 3 Decades Of Precipitation In The Upper Colorado River Basin From A High-Resolution Regional Climate Model, William Rudisill, Alejandro Flores, Rosemary Carroll

Geosciences Faculty Publications and Presentations

Convection-permitting regional climate models (RCMs) have recently become tractable for applications at multi-decadal timescales. These types of models have tremendous utility for water resource studies, but better characterization of precipitation biases is needed, particularly for water-resource-critical mountain regions, where precipitation is highly variable in space, observations are sparse, and the societal water need is great. This study examines 34 years (1987–2020) of RCM precipitation from the Weather Research and Forecasting model (WRF; v3.8.1), using the Climate Forecast System Reanalysis (CFS; CFSv2) initial and lateral boundary conditions and a 1 km × 1 km innermost grid spacing. The RCM is centered …

Perovskite Cspbbr3 Solar Cells With Novel Hole-Transporting Layer Of Metal Complexes, Liqiu Zheng, Evynn S. Jackson, Ny'kesha S. Warren, Robert Owor, Zhongrui Li

Georgia Journal of Science

For the first time, the novel application of Schiff-base copper complexes in all-inorganic perovskite CsBrBr3 solar cells has been explored and turns out they could be utilized as effective hole-transporting materials. Schiff-base copper complexes with halogen ligands (R=Cl and Br) are synthesized with an ease approach at a low cost, both of which exhibit decent power conversion efficiency of 4.55% and 5.71%, respectively, when being constructed into solar devices as hole transport layers. Thanks to high thermal/chemical stability of those Schiff-base metal complexes, the strengthened stability was achieved which is comparable to that of carbon-based CsBrBr3 solar cells. …

Ecosystem Service Valuation Of Blue Carbon Habitats: A Review For Saltmarshes And Seagrasses, Geraldine Doolan, Stephen Hynes

Journal of Ocean and Coastal Economics

Oceans and coastal marine ecosystems, particularly vegetated coastal habitats such as mangroves, seagrass, and saltmarsh, play a significant role in the global carbon cycle as long-term carbon sinks. Ensuring that these habitats continue to function as sinks and do not become sources of emissions through habitat degradation is vital for climate and environmental policy goals. These blue carbon ecosystems also provide a number of other important ecosystem services to societies. Understanding the economic value of blue carbon ecosystems is necessary to make informed policy decisions that weigh the costs and benefits of ecosystem management plans. This paper reviews the current …

The Effects Of The Big-Headed Turtle (Platysternon Megacephalum) On Community And Ecosystem In Hong Kong Hill Streams, Wing Lam Fok

Lingnan Theses (MPhil & PhD)

Freshwater turtles and tortoises are ecologically important organisms; however, they are underappreciated, and conservation attention often focuses on the more charismatic animals such as birds and mammals. Although turtles are the most traded group of animals and many species are at the brink of extinction, little research has been done to understand their ecology in Asia because of the rarity of wild populations. Hong Kong is a biodiversity hotspot for freshwater turtle species. The Big-headed Turtle (Platysternon megacephalum) is a critically endangered species that still maintains small populations in Hong Kong, providing a rare opportunity to study the …
