School of Earth & Environment Departmental Research

Here, we report the mineralogy, petrography, C-N-O-stable isotope compositions, degree of disorder of organic matter, and abundances of presolar components of the chondrite Roberts Massif (RBT) 04133 using a coordinated, multitechnique approach. The results of this study are inconsistent with its initial classification as a Renazzo-like carbonaceous chondrite, and strongly support RBT 04133 being a brecciated, reduced petrologic type >3.3 Vigarano-like carbonaceous (CV) chondrite. RBT 04133 shows no evidence for aqueous alteration. However, it is mildly thermally altered (up to approximately 440 °C); which is apparent in its whole-rock C and N isotopic compositions, the degree of disorder of C …

Electron Donor Contributions To Denitrification In The Elk Valley Aquifer, North Dakota, Amanda M. Krieger Jan 2014

Electron Donor Contributions To Denitrification In The Elk Valley Aquifer, North Dakota, Amanda M. Krieger

Theses and Dissertations

Six denitrification tracer tests were performed over eight and a half years in in situ mesocosms (ISMs) in the Elk Valley Aquifer (EVA) in east-central North Dakota. Groundwater samples were analyzed to determine how much nitrate was lost beyond that explained by dilution of the bromide tracer. Additional losses were attributed to denitrification. The denitrification rates varied from 0.10 to 0.23 mg N/L/day for the six tests. In general, the major electron donors for denitrification are organic carbon (OC), pyrite (FeS2), and ferrous iron silicate minerals. In the EVA tracer tests, increases in sulfate indicated that the oxidation of pyrite …

Strategic Decision Support System Using Heuristic Algorithm For Practical Outlet Zones Allocation To Dealers In A Beer Supply Distribution Network, Michelle Lee Fong Cheong Jan 2014

Strategic Decision Support System Using Heuristic Algorithm For Practical Outlet Zones Allocation To Dealers In A Beer Supply Distribution Network, Michelle Lee Fong Cheong

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

We consider a two-echelon beer supply distribution network with the brewer replenishing the dealers and the dealers serving the outlet zones directly, for multiple product types. The allocation of the outlet zones to the dealers will determine the quantity of products the brewer replenishes each dealer, which will in turn impact the total warehousing and transportation costs. The non-linear optimization model formulated is difficult to solve to optimality, and the model itself does not include practical business considerations in the distribution business. A heuristics algorithm is designed and easily implemented using spreadsheets with Visual Basic programming to effectively and efficiently …

Particle Formation In Ambient Mass Spectrometry, Thabiso Musapelo Jan 2014

Particle Formation In Ambient Mass Spectrometry, Thabiso Musapelo

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

A particle sizing system was developed that couples a light scattering particle sizer with a differential mobility analyzer for particle detection and elucidation with the capability for measuring particle sizes in the range of 10 nm to 20 μm. The particle sizing system was used to investigate particle formation that is associated with several methods of atmospheric pressure ion formation used in mass spectrometry: atmospheric pressure matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization (MALDI) and inlet ionization. The methods for particle formation were 1) ultraviolet (UV) laser ablation, 2) infrared (IR) laser ablation, and 3) shock-generated particle formation. Particles formed by UV laser …

On Matroid And Polymatroid Connectivity, Dennis Wayne Hall Ii Jan 2014

On Matroid And Polymatroid Connectivity, Dennis Wayne Hall Ii

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Matroids were introduced in 1935 by Hassler Whitney to provide a way to abstractly capture the dependence properties common to graphs and matrices. One important class of matroids arises by taking as objects some finite collection of one-dimensional subspaces of a vector space. If, instead, one takes as objects some finite collection of subspaces of dimensions at most k in a vector space, one gets an example of a k-polymatroid.

Connectivity is a pivotal topic of study in the endeavor to understand the structure of matroids and polymatroids. In this dissertation, we study the notion of connectivity from several …

Synthetic Routes To Therapeutic Agents Via Masked Functionalities: From Orthogonal Peptide Crosslink To Photothermal Cancer Prodrug, Chyree Shantel Batton Jan 2014

Synthetic Routes To Therapeutic Agents Via Masked Functionalities: From Orthogonal Peptide Crosslink To Photothermal Cancer Prodrug, Chyree Shantel Batton

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The theonellamides are a family of compounds distinguished by their crosslinking ô-histidinoalanine (ô-HAL) residue. Part one of this dissertation details the synthesis of an orthogonally protected ô-HAL building block that will be incorporated into a total synthesis of theonellamide C. Selective deprotection of each amine and acid of this orthogonally protected building block is also demonstrated. Various reaction partners for the assembly of ô-histidinoalanine were explored. One approach involved the coupling of N-Fmoc-â-iodoalanine benzyl ester and (Nðim)-blocked histidine nucleophiles including a fused bicyclic urea and a Boc-His(Nð-Pac)-OMe. While the imidazolium salts were identified by mass spectrometry, elimination of the iodide …

Environmental conditions, dispersal lags, and interactions among species are major factors structuring communities through time and across space. Ecologists have emphasized the importance of biotic interactions in determining local patterns of species association. In contrast, abiotic limits, dispersal limitation, and historical factors have commonly been invoked to explain community structure patterns at larger spatiotemporal scales, such as the appearance of late Pleistocene no-analog communities or latitudinal gradients of species richness in both modern and fossil assemblages. Quantifying the relative influence of these processes on species co-occurrence patterns is not straightforward. We provide a framework for assessing causes of species associations …

A Cosmogenic View Of Erosion, Relief Generation, And The Age Of Faulting In Southern Africa, Paul R. Bierman, Ryan Coppersmith, Kathryn Hanson, Johann Neveling, Eric W. Portenga, Dylan H. Rood Jan 2014

A Cosmogenic View Of Erosion, Relief Generation, And The Age Of Faulting In Southern Africa, Paul R. Bierman, Ryan Coppersmith, Kathryn Hanson, Johann Neveling, Eric W. Portenga, Dylan H. Rood

College of Arts and Sciences Faculty Publications

Southernmost Africa, with extensive upland geomorphic surfaces, deep canyons, and numerous faults, has long interested geoscientists. A paucity of dates and low rates of background seismicity make it challenging to quantify the pace of landscape change and determine the likelihood and timing of fault movement that could raise and lower parts of the landscape and create associated geohazards. To infer regional rates of denudation, we measured 10Be in river sediment samples and found that south-central South Africa is eroding ∼5 m m.y.-1, a slow erosion rate consistent with those measured in other non-tectonically active areas, including much of southern Africa. …

A Low-Memory Intensive Decoding Architecture For Double-Binary Convolutional Turbo Code, Ming Zhan, Liang Zhou, Jun Wu Jan 2014

A Low-Memory Intensive Decoding Architecture For Double-Binary Convolutional Turbo Code, Ming Zhan, Liang Zhou, Jun Wu

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Memory accesses take a large part of the power consumption in the iterative decoding of double-binary convolutional turbo code (DB-CTC). To deal with this, a low-memory intensive decoding architecture is proposed for DB-CTC in this paper. The new scheme is based on an improved maximum a posteriori probability algorithm, where instead of storing all of the state metrics, only a part of these state metrics is stored in the state metrics cache (SMC), and the memory size of the SMC is thus reduced by 25%. Owing to a compare-select--recalculate processing (CSRP) module in the proposed decoding architecture, the unstored state …

M-Fdbscan: A Multicore Density-Based Uncertain Data Clustering Algorithm, Atakan Erdem, Taflan İmre Gündem Jan 2014

M-Fdbscan: A Multicore Density-Based Uncertain Data Clustering Algorithm, Atakan Erdem, Taflan İmre Gündem

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

In many data mining applications, we use a clustering algorithm on a large amount of uncertain data. In this paper, we adapt an uncertain data clustering algorithm called fast density-based spatial clustering of applications with noise (FDBSCAN) to multicore systems in order to have fast processing. The new algorithm, which we call multicore FDBSCAN (M-FDBSCAN), splits the data domain into c rectangular regions, where c is the number of cores in the system. The FDBSCAN algorithm is then applied to each rectangular region simultaneously. After the clustering operation is completed, semiclusters that occur during splitting are detected and merged to …

A Novel Approach Based On Reliability Sensitivity Analysis To Allocate Protective Devices, Hamed Hashemi Dezaki, Hossein Askarian Abyaneh, Mehdi Garmrudi, Hossein Mahdinia, Kazem Mazlumi Jan 2014

A Novel Approach Based On Reliability Sensitivity Analysis To Allocate Protective Devices, Hamed Hashemi Dezaki, Hossein Askarian Abyaneh, Mehdi Garmrudi, Hossein Mahdinia, Kazem Mazlumi

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

In electrical distribution systems, it is possible to have a reliable system via a well-designed protective scheme. The allocation of protective devices is an important parameter in the design of a protective scheme. Different approaches to optimize the allocation of protective devices have been studied. Because of some uncertainties, it is not the best strategy to select an optimized solution in accordance with certain conditions. The availability of the protective devices seriously affects the reliability of electrical distribution systems. Furthermore, reduction of the investment in some designing processes leads to a decrease in the number of protective devices that will …

Fuzzy Impedance And Force Control Of A Stewart Platform, Selçuk Ki̇zi̇r, Zafer Bi̇ngül Jan 2014

Fuzzy Impedance And Force Control Of A Stewart Platform, Selçuk Ki̇zi̇r, Zafer Bi̇ngül

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

A new, simple, and effective control method is proposed for the position-based impedance and force control of a Stewart platform (SP). The control approach can be divided into 3 parts, namely position control in free space, impedance control in contact, and force control. An impedance filter is developed to achieve the desired behavior between the position and force. The gain of the filter is modified by a fuzzy logic proportional-integral-derivative controller. Kinematic and dynamic models of the SP are simulated in a MATLAB/Simulink environment. Several real-time experiments are conducted with the SP developed in our laboratory. The results of the …

This system is also one kind of decision support system. Implementation of …

Properties Of The Pinched Tensor Product, Yousuf Alkhezi Jan 2014

Properties Of The Pinched Tensor Product, Yousuf Alkhezi

Mathematics Dissertations

For complexes of modules we study a new construction, called the pinched tensor product, which was introduced by Lars Winther Christensen and David A. Jorgensen to study Tate homology. We explore properties of the pinched tensor product and their comparison to properties of the ordinary tensor product. For example; we show some isomorphisms no longer holds for the pinched tensor product. Although if we change isomorphism to quasi-isomorphism the pinched version holds. Plus if f is a map from C to D and g is a map from A to B are morphisms of complexes of R-modules with f homotopic …

Representation Theory Of Totally Reflexive Modules Over Non-Gorenstein Rings, Denise Amanda Rangel Jan 2014

Representation Theory Of Totally Reflexive Modules Over Non-Gorenstein Rings, Denise Amanda Rangel

Mathematics Dissertations

In the late 1960's Auslander and Bridger published Stable Module Theory, in whichthe idea of totally reflexive modules first appeared. These modules have been studiedby many. However, a bulk of the information known about them is when they are overa Gorenstein ring, since in that case they are exactly the maximal Cohen-Macaulaymodules. Much is already known about maximal Cohen-Macaulay modules, that is,totally reflexive modules over a Gorenstein ring. Therefore, we investigate the existence and abundance of totally reflexive modules over non-Gorenstein rings. It is known that if there exist one non-trivial totally reflexive module over a non-Gorenstein ring, then there exists …

An Analysis Of Arctic Climate, The Intense Arctic Cyclone Of Early August 2012, And Middle To High Latitude Snowcover, Adam H. Turchioe

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

On 03 August 2012, a cyclone formed over Central Siberia and progressed northeastwards. By 0000 UTC 05 August, the cyclone reached the Arctic Ocean with a mean sea-level pressure (MSLP) of 984 hPa. Once over the Arctic Ocean, the cyclone rapidly intensified and reached a minimum pressure of 966 hPa on 06 August near 83°N and 170°W. The cyclone slowly weakened, and on 0000 UTC 10 August once again had a minimum MSLP of 984 hPa. The motivation for this presentation is driven by the likelihood that this cyclone is one of the most intense storm systems to ever impact …

Energy Dependence Of Deuteron Induced Nuclear Reaction Cross Sections On Li, Be, B, C, N, O, And F, Mathew Parenti

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Nuclear reactions induced by 1.2 MeV deuteron on 9Be and 19F are studied with the goal of developing a practical analysis method for these light elements. In addition, the energy dependence of deuteron induced nuclear reactions on 7Li, 9Be, 11B, 12C, 14N, 16O, and 19F was measured. The energy dependence of these nuclear reactions allows the nuclear reaction analysis for these light elements to be corrected for the energy loss of the incident deuteron ions in the analyzed film.

Modeling The Early, Aging-Related Changes In Human Recombinant Gammas-Crystallin In Vitro, Christiana Oluwaseun Salami

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Cataract is the leading cause of blindness in the world. Cataractous lenses scatter a significant part of the light entering the eye. Cataract can be of several types: Age-related cataract, secondary cataract, traumatic cataract, congenital cataract, and radiation cataract. Age-related cataract is the most common type of cataract. Several factors contribute to age-onset cataract; among them are the Post-Translational Modifications (PTMs) to the major lens proteins or crystallins, which constitute about 80-90% of the protein content of the lens. Predominant PTMs of the crystallins are oxidation, deamidation, phosphorylation, glycation, and disulfide crosslinking, which tend to increase as the lens ages.

Closing The Knowing-Doing Gap In Invasive Plant Management: Accessibility And Interdisciplinarity Of Scientific Research, Virginia Matzek, Justin Covino, Jennifer L. Funk, Martin Saunders

Biology, Chemistry, and Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles and Research

Like many conservation disciplines, invasion biology may suffer from a knowing-doing gap, where scientific research fails to inform management actions. We surveyed California resource managers to evaluate engagement with scientific research and to identify research priorities. We examined managers' access to information, judgment of the usefulness of existing research, ability to generate scientific information, and priorities for future research. We found that practitioners rely on their own experience, and largely do not read the peer-reviewed literature, which they regard as only moderately useful. Less than half of managers who do research carry out experiments conforming to the norms of hypothesis …

Simultaneous Adsorption Of 11 Volatile Organic Compounds By An Activated Carbon Made From Polystyrene Sulfonic Acid-Based Organic Salt, Alejandro Smith Jan 2014

Simultaneous Adsorption Of 11 Volatile Organic Compounds By An Activated Carbon Made From Polystyrene Sulfonic Acid-Based Organic Salt, Alejandro Smith

Dissertations and Theses

Activated carbon is used in water treatment worldwide due to its ability to adsorb many different contaminants from water. The high adsorption capacity of activated carbon is linked to its high internal surface area and micro/meso- porosity. In this work an activated carbon obtained from polystyrene sulfonic acid-based organic salt was examined to simultaneously adsorb eleven volatile organic compounds from aqueous solution. Adsorption data were modeled with different isotherms to determine the equilibrium adsorptive capacities for these compounds. The performance of the polymer-based activated carbon was then compared with that of a commercial wood-based activated carbon. The results indicate that …

Dynamic Analysis Of Dna Nanoparticle Immobilization To Model Biomaterial Substrates Using Combinatorial Spectroscopic Ellipsometry And Quartz Crystal Microbalance With Dissipation, Tadas Kasputis, Alex Pieper, Mathias Schubert, Angela K. Pannier Jan 2014

Dynamic Analysis Of Dna Nanoparticle Immobilization To Model Biomaterial Substrates Using Combinatorial Spectroscopic Ellipsometry And Quartz Crystal Microbalance With Dissipation, Tadas Kasputis, Alex Pieper, Mathias Schubert, Angela K. Pannier

Department of Biological Systems Engineering: Papers and Publications

Gene expression within cells can be altered through gene delivery approaches, which have tremendous potential for gene therapy, tissue engineering, and diagnostics. Substrate-mediated gene delivery describes the delivery of plasmid DNA or DNA complexed with nonviral vectors to cells from a surface, with the DNA immobilized to a substrate through specific or nonspecific interactions. In this work, DNA-nanoparticle (DNA–NP) adsorption to substrates is evaluated using combinatorial, in situ spectroscopic ellipsometry and quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation (SE/QCM-D), to evaluate the basic dynamic processes involved in the adsorption and immobilization of DNA–NP complexes to substrates. The concentration of DNA–NP solutions influences …

High-Resolution Magnetic Susceptibility Measurements For Investigating Magnetic Mineral Formation During Microbial Mediated Iron Reduction, Estella A. Atekwana, Farag M. Mewafy, Gamal Z. Abdel Aal, D. Dale Werkema, Andre Revil, Lee D. Slater

Geosciences and Geological and Petroleum Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Disimilatory iron-reducing bacteria play an important role in the reduction of Fe(hydr)oxides and the production of secondary solid-iron mineral phases that can have magnetic properties. Magnetic susceptibility can therefore play an important role in identifying zones where microbial-mediated iron reduction is occurring. We investigated the magnetic susceptibility variations in a hydrocarbon-contaminated aquifer where methanogenesis and iron reduction are the main biogeochemical processes. Our objectives are to (1) determine the variability of magnetic susceptibility, (2) determine the hydrobiogeochemical controls on the magnetic susceptibility variability, and (3) evaluate the use of magnetic susceptibility as a viable technique for identifying zones where the …

Manufacturing Of Vegetable Oils-Based Epoxy And Composites For Structural Applications, Rongpeng Wang Jan 2014

Manufacturing Of Vegetable Oils-Based Epoxy And Composites For Structural Applications, Rongpeng Wang

Doctoral Dissertations

"Epoxidized vegetable oil (EVO) is one of the largest industrial applications of vegetable oils (VOs) and is widely used as a plasticizer and as a synthetic intermediate for polyol or unsaturated polyester. However, the utility of EVO as monomer for high performance epoxy thermoset polymer is limited by its reactivity and by the resulting physical properties. Herein, VO-based epoxy monomers, i.e., glycidyl esters of epoxidized fatty acids derived from soybean oil (EGS) or linseed oil (EGL), have been synthesized and were benchmarked against commercial available diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A (DGEBA) and also epoxidized soybean oil (ESO) controls. EGS and …

Horizontal Divergence Of Typhoon-Generated Gravity Waves In The Upper Troposphere And Lower Stratosphere (Utls) And Its Influence On Typhoon Evolution, Seung Hee Kim, H.-Y. Chun, W. Jang Jan 2014

Horizontal Divergence Of Typhoon-Generated Gravity Waves In The Upper Troposphere And Lower Stratosphere (Utls) And Its Influence On Typhoon Evolution, Seung Hee Kim, H.-Y. Chun, W. Jang

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

The characteristics of horizontal divergence induced by typhoon-generated gravity waves (HDTGWs) and the influence of HDTGW on typhoon evolution are investigated based on the simulation results of Typhoon Saomai (2006) using the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model. The power spectral density of HDTGW shows dominant powers at horizontal wavelengths of 20-30 km and at periods of less than 1 h. This is associated with gravity waves generated by vigorous convective clouds in an inner core region of the typhoon. However, the domain-averaged HDTGW in the upper troposphere and lower stratosphere had a spectral peak at 24 h, which is …

Quantum Non-Barking Dogs, Sara Imari Walker, Paul C. W. Davies, Prasant Samantray, Yakir Aharonov

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

Quantum weak measurements with states both pre- and post-selected offer a window into a hitherto neglected sector of quantum mechanics. A class of such systems involves time dependent evolution with transitions possible. In this paper we explore two very simple systems in this class. The first is a toy model representing the decay of an excited atom. The second is the tunneling of a particle through a barrier. The post-selection criteria are chosen as follows: at the final time, the atom remains in its initial excited state for the first example and the particle remains behind the barrier for the …
