On An Extension Of Riordan Array And Its Application In The Construction Of Convolution-Type And Abel-Type Identities, Tian-Xiao He, Leetsch Hsu, Xing Ron Ma Dec 2013

On An Extension Of Riordan Array And Its Application In The Construction Of Convolution-Type And Abel-Type Identities, Tian-Xiao He, Leetsch Hsu, Xing Ron Ma

Tian-Xiao He

Using the basic fact that any formal power series over the real or complex number field can always be expressed in terms of given polynomials {pn(t)}{pn(t)}, where pn(t)pn(t) is of degree nn, we extend the ordinary Riordan array (resp. Riordan group) to a generalized Riordan array (resp. generalized Riordan group) associated with {pn(t)}{pn(t)}. As new application of the latter, a rather general Vandermonde-type convolution formula and certain of its particular forms are presented. The construction of the Abel type identities using the generalized Riordan arrays is also discussed.

Women Of The Academy And The Sea: 2000–2014, Suzanne Oconnell

Suzanne OConnell

There is good news and bad news for twenty-first century women oceanographers. Tremendous progress has been made in breaking the glass ceiling, both in positions and in prestigious awards and medals (Table 1). There were many firsts, including the first woman to head the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA; Jane Lubchenco) and the first woman to head the United States Geological Survey (USGS; Marcia McNutt). Commendably, other women are succeeding the first women in these very high level positions. Kathy Sullivan, the first woman to walk in space, succeeds Lubchenco. McNutt’s successor at the USGS not been confirmed; however, …

Temporal And Spatial Evolution Of Wave-Induced Ripple Geometry: Regular Versus Irregular Ripples, Timothy Nelson, George Voulgaris Dec 2013

Temporal And Spatial Evolution Of Wave-Induced Ripple Geometry: Regular Versus Irregular Ripples, Timothy Nelson, George Voulgaris

George Voulgaris

Concurrent observations of inner shelf near bed hydrodynamics and acoustic imagery of the seabed are used to relate wave-induced ripple geometry (wavelength and orientation) to near bed directional wave velocities. The observations were collected on the continental shelf of the South Atlantic Bight at water depths of 9.5 and 30 m off the coasts of South Carolina (median size 177 mm) and Georgia (388 mm), respectively. 2-D spectral analysis techniques are performed on the imagery to automate detection of ripple wavelength, orientation, and irregularity. Our analysis shows that ripple irregularity is a time-dependent process dependent on magnitude, direction, and duration …

Purification Of An Inducible Dnase From A Thermophilic Fungus, Kyle Landry, Andrea Vu, Robert Levin Dec 2013

Purification Of An Inducible Dnase From A Thermophilic Fungus, Kyle Landry, Andrea Vu, Robert Levin

Kyle S Landry

The ability to induce an extracellular DNase from a novel thermophilic fungus was studied and the DNAse purified using both traditional and innovative purification techniques. The isolate produced sterile hyphae under all attempted growing conditions, with an average diameter of 2 μm and was found to have an optimal temperature of 45 °C and a maximum of 65 °C. Sequencing of the internal transcribed region resulted in a 91% match with Chaetomium sp., suggesting a new species, but further clarification on this point is needed. The optimal temperature for DNase production was found to be 55 °C and was induced by the …

Purification And Characterization Of Iso-Ribonucleases From A Novel Thermophilic Fungus, Kyle Landry, Robert Levin Dec 2013

Purification And Characterization Of Iso-Ribonucleases From A Novel Thermophilic Fungus, Kyle Landry, Robert Levin

Kyle S Landry

A thermophilic fungus previously isolated from composted horse manure was found to produce extracellular iso-RNases that were purified 127.6-fold using a combination of size exclusion chromatography and a novel affinity membrane purification system. The extent of purification was determined electrophoretically using 4%–15% gradient polyacrylamide gels. RNase activity was dependent on the presence of a metal co-factor with significantly more activity with Zn2+ or Mn2+ than Mg2+. The RNases exhibited maximum activity at both pH 3.0 and pH 7.0 with no activity at pH 2.0 or 10.0. The optimal temperature for the iso-RNase was 70 °C. The …

Optimised Random Mutations For Evolutionary Algorithms, Sean Mcgerty, Frank Moisiadis Dec 2013

Optimised Random Mutations For Evolutionary Algorithms, Sean Mcgerty, Frank Moisiadis

Frank Moisiadis

To demonstrate our approaches we will use Sudoku puzzles, which are an excellent test bed for
evolutionary algorithms. The puzzles are accessible enough for people to enjoy. However the more complex
puzzles require thousands of iterations before an evolutionary algorithm finds a solution. If we were
attempting to compare evolutionary algorithms we could count their iterations to solution as an indicator
of relative efficiency. Evolutionary algorithms however include a process of random mutation for solution
candidates. We will show that by improving the random mutation behaviours we were able to solve
problems with minimal evolutionary optimisation. Experiments demonstrated the random …

Constructing Carmichael Numbers Through Improved Subset-Product Algorithms, W.R. Alford, Jon Grantham, Steven Hayman, Andrew Shallue Dec 2013

Constructing Carmichael Numbers Through Improved Subset-Product Algorithms, W.R. Alford, Jon Grantham, Steven Hayman, Andrew Shallue

Andrew Shallue

We have constructed a Carmichael number with 10,333,229,505 prime factors, and have also constructed Carmichael numbers with  prime factors for every  between 3 and 19,565,220. These computations are the product of implementations of two new algorithms for the subset product problem that exploit the non-uniform distribution of primes with the property that  divides a highly composite .

Observing, Reporting, And Deciding In Networks Of Sentences, H. Jerome Keisler, Jeffrey M. Keisler Dec 2013

Observing, Reporting, And Deciding In Networks Of Sentences, H. Jerome Keisler, Jeffrey M. Keisler

Jeffrey Keisler

In prior work we considered networks of agents who prove facts from their knowledge bases and report them to their neighbors in their common languages in order to help a decider verify a single sentence. In report complete networks, the signatures of the agents and the links between agents are rich enough to verify any decider's sentence that can be proved from the combined knowledge base. This paper introduces a more general setting where new observations may be added to knowledge bases and the decider must choose a sentence from a set of alternatives. We consider the question of when …

Opportunities For Energy Crop Production Based On Subfield Scale Distribution Of Profitability, Ian J. Bonner, Kara G. Cafferty, David J. Muth, Mark D. Tomer, David E. James, Sarah A. Porter, Douglas L. Karlen Dec 2013

Opportunities For Energy Crop Production Based On Subfield Scale Distribution Of Profitability, Ian J. Bonner, Kara G. Cafferty, David J. Muth, Mark D. Tomer, David E. James, Sarah A. Porter, Douglas L. Karlen

Douglas L Karlen

Incorporation of dedicated herbaceous energy crops into row crop landscapes is a promising means to supply an expanding biofuel industry while benefiting soil and water quality and increasing biodiversity. Despite these positive traits, energy crops remain largely unaccepted due to concerns over their practicality and cost of implementation. This paper presents a case study for Hardin County, Iowa, to demonstrate how subfield decision making can be used to target candidate areas for conversion to energy crop production. Estimates of variability in row crop production at a subfield level are used to model the economic performance of corn (Zea mays L.) …

The Effects Of Surface Water Velocity On Hyporheic Interchange, Timothy Sickbert, Eric Wade Peterson Dec 2013

The Effects Of Surface Water Velocity On Hyporheic Interchange, Timothy Sickbert, Eric Wade Peterson

Eric Wade Peterson

When evaluating hyporheic exchange in a flowing stream, it is inappropriate to directly compare stream stage with subsurface hydraulic head (h) to determine direction and magnitude of the gradient between the stream and the subsurface. In the case of moving water, it is invalid to ignore velocity and to assume that stage equals the net downward pressure on the streambed. The Bernoulli equation describes the distribution of energy within flowing fluids and implies that net pressure decreases as a function of velocity, i.e., the Venturi Effect, which sufficiently reduces the pressure on the streambed to create the appearance of a …

A Regression Model To Investigate The Performance Of Black-Scholes Using Macroeconomic Predictors, Timothy A. Smith, Ersoy Subasi, Aliraza M. Rattansi

Timothy Smith

As it is well known an option is defined as the right to buy sell a certain asset, thus, one can look at the purchase of an option as a bet on the financial instrument under consideration. Now while the evaluation of options is a completely different mathematical topic than the prediction of future stock prices, there is some relationship between the two. It is worthy to note that henceforth we will only consider options that have a given fixed expiration time T, i.e., we restrict the discussion to the so called European options. Now, for a simple illustration of …

A Class Of Permutation Tests For The Equality Of Two Marginal Survival Functions Using Paired Censored Data, Liang Li Dec 2013

A Class Of Permutation Tests For The Equality Of Two Marginal Survival Functions Using Paired Censored Data, Liang Li

Liang Li

We studied several test statistics for testing the equality of marginal survival functions of paired censored data. The null distribution of the test statistics was approximated by permutation. These tests do not require explicit modeling or estimation of the within-pair correlation, accommodate both paired data and singletons, and the computation is straightforward with most statistical software. Numerical studies showed that these tests have competitive size and power performance. One test statistic has higher power than previously published test statistics when the two survival functions under comparison cross. We illustrate use of these tests in a propensity score matched dataset.

Evolution Of The Stress And Strain Fields In The Eastern Cordillera, Colombia, Obi Egbue, James N. Kellogg Dec 2013

Evolution Of The Stress And Strain Fields In The Eastern Cordillera, Colombia, Obi Egbue, James N. Kellogg

James N Kellogg

This work integrates stress data from Global Positioning System measurements and earthquake focal mechanism solutions, with new borehole breakout and natural fracture system data to better understand the complex interactions between the major tectonic plates in northwestern South America and to examine how the stress regime in the Eastern Cordillera and the Llanos foothills in Colombia has evolved through time. The dataset was used to generate an integrated stress map of the northern Andes and to propose a model for stress evolution in the Eastern Cordillera. In the Cordillera, the primary present-day maximum principal stress direction is WNW-ESE to NW-SE, …
