Sensitivity Of The Antarctic Ice Sheet To Climate Change Over The Last Two Glacial/Interglacial Cycles, Brenda Hall, George H. Denton Oct 2014

Sensitivity Of The Antarctic Ice Sheet To Climate Change Over The Last Two Glacial/Interglacial Cycles, Brenda Hall, George H. Denton

University of Maine Office of Research Administration: Grant Reports

This project was designed to develop knowledge of the extent of the Ross Sea ice sheet during the last two glaciations and to develop a chronology for the last glacial maximum and penultimate glaciation. To this end, we had the following goals:

1) Map the extent of the Ross Sea ice sheet along the western coast of McMurdo Sound from Taylor Valley to the southern Royal Society Range.
2) Develop a radiocarbon chronology for the last glacial maximum from dates of algal mats within moraines.
3) Produce a uranium-thorium chronology to gain information on the timing of the penultimate glaciation. …

Sensitivity Of The Antarctic Ice Sheet To Climate Change Over The Last Two Glacial/Interglacial Cycles, Brenda L. Hall, George H. Denton

University of Maine Office of Research Administration: Grant Reports

This award supports a project to investigate the sensitivity of the Antarctic ice sheet (AIS) to global climate change over the last two Glacial/Interglacial cycles. The intellectual merit of the project is that despite its importance to Earth's climate system, we currently lack a full understanding of AIS sensitivity to global climate change. This project will reconstruct and precisely date the history of marine-based ice in the Ross Sea sector over the last two glacial/interglacial cycles, which will enable a better understanding of the potential driving mechanisms (i.e., sea-level rise, ice dynamics, ocean temperature variations) for ice fluctuations. This will …

Dissipative Superfluid Mass Flux Through Solid 4he, Ye. Vekhov, Robert Hallock Oct 2014

Dissipative Superfluid Mass Flux Through Solid 4he, Ye. Vekhov, Robert Hallock

Robert Hallock

The thermomechanical effect in superfluid helium is used to create an initial chemical potential difference ∆u_0 across a solid 4_He sample. This ∆u_0 causes a flow of helium atoms from one reservoir filled with superfluid helium, through a sample cell filled with solid helium, to another superfluid-filled reservoir until potential equilibrium between the reservoirs is restored. The solid helium sample is separated from each of the reservoirs by Vycor rods that allow only the superfluid component to flow. With an improved technique, measurements of the flow F at several fixed solid helium temperatures T have been made as a function …

Aerosol emissions from prescribed fires can affect air quality on regional scales. Accurate representation of these emissions in models requires information regarding the amount and composition of the emitted species.Wemeasured a suite of submicron particulatematter species in young plumes emitted from prescribed fires (chaparral and montane ecosystems in California; coastal plain ecosystem in South Carolina) and from open burning of over 15 individual plant species in the laboratory. We report emission ratios and emission factors for refractory black carbon (rBC) and submicron nonrefractory aerosol and compare field and laboratory measurements to assess the representativeness of our laboratory-measured emissions. Laboratory measurements …

Explosive Dome Eruptions Modulated By Periodic Gas-Driven Inflation, Jeffrey B. Johnson, J. J. Lyons, B. J. Andrews, J. M. Lees Oct 2014

Explosive Dome Eruptions Modulated By Periodic Gas-Driven Inflation, Jeffrey B. Johnson, J. J. Lyons, B. J. Andrews, J. M. Lees

Geosciences Faculty Publications and Presentations

Volcan Santiaguito (Guatemala) “breathes” with extraordinary regularity as the edifice's conduit system accumulates free gas, which periodically vents to the atmosphere. Periodic pressurization controls explosion timing, which nearly always occurs at peak inflation, as detected with tiltmeters. Tilt cycles in January 2012 reveal regular 26 ± 6 min inflation/deflation cycles corresponding to at least ~101 kg/s of gas fluxing the system. Very long period (VLP) earthquakes presage explosions and occur during cycles when inflation rates are most rapid. VLPs locate ~300 m below the vent and indicate mobilization of volatiles, which ascend at ~50 m/s. Rapid gas ascent feeds …

Time And Dark Matter From The Conformal Symmetries Of Euclidean Space, Jeffrey S. Hazboun, James Thomas Wheeler Oct 2014

Time And Dark Matter From The Conformal Symmetries Of Euclidean Space, Jeffrey S. Hazboun, James Thomas Wheeler

All Physics Faculty Publications

The quotient of the conformal group of Euclidean 4-space by its Weyl subgroup results in a geometry possessing many of the properties of relativistic phase space, including both a natural symplectic form and non-degenerate Killing metric. We show that the general solution posesses orthogonal Lagrangian submanifolds, with the induced metric and the spin connection on the submanifolds necessarily Lorentzian, despite the Euclidean starting pont. By examining the structure equations of the biconformal space in an orthonormal frame adapted to its phase space properties, we also find that two new tensor fields exist in this geometry, not present in Riemannian geometry. …

Inhalable Constituents Of Thirdhand Tobacco Smoke: Chemical Characterization And Health Impact Considerations, Mohamad Sleiman, Jennifer M. Logue, Wentai Luo, James F. Pankow, Lara A. Gundel, Hugo Destaillats

Chemistry Faculty Publications and Presentations

Tobacco smoke residues lingering in the indoor environment, also termed thirdhand smoke (THS), can be a source of long-term exposure to harmful pollutants. THS composition is affected by chemical transformations and by air–surface partitioning over time scales of minutes to months. This study identified and quantified airborne THS pollutants available for respiratory exposure, identified potential environmental tracers, and estimated health impacts to nonsmokers. In a ventilated 18 m3 laboratory chamber, six cigarettes were machine-smoked, and levels of particulate matter (PM2.5) and 58 volatile organic compounds (VOCs) were monitored during an aging period of 18 h. Results were compared with field …

Measurement Of The Ttproduction Cross Section In Pp Collisions At√S=8 Tev In Dilepton Final States Containing One Τ Lepton, Cms Collaboration, Cern, Switzerland, Samantha Hewamanage, Stephan Linn, Pete E. Markowitz, German Martinez, Jorge Luis Rodriguez

Department of Physics

The top-quark pair production cross section is measured in final states with one electron or muon and one hadronically decaying τlepton from the process tt→(ν)(τντ)bb, where =e, μ. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 19.6fb−1collected with the CMS detector in proton–proton collisions at √s=8TeV. The measured cross section σtt=257 ±3(stat)±24(syst)±7(lumi)pb, assuming a top-quark mass of 172.5GeV, is consistent with the standard model prediction.

Seismicity Processes In The Charlevoix Seismic Zone, Eastern Canada, Azadeh Fereidoni Oct 2014

Seismicity Processes In The Charlevoix Seismic Zone, Eastern Canada, Azadeh Fereidoni

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

The Charlevoix Seismic Zone (CSZ) is the most seismically active region in eastern Canada, based on the historical and current rate of activity. Several papers contend that the current seismicity in the CSZ represents long-lived aftershock sequences of the 1663 M~7 earthquake, in which the aftershock activity has persisted for hundreds of years. The aim of this thesis is to explore the influence of the 1663 earthquake on the current seismicity in the CSZ. The first part of the thesis has focused on developing a comprehensive earthquake database required for analysis of seismicity. The second part of the thesis has …
