Neck cutoffs are important and prominent features of alluvial rivers yet detailed field-based research of neck cutoffs has been insufficient to fully characterize three-dimensional flow, morphologic change, and sediment deposition and distribution. The main objectives of this research are to examine the formation and evolution of neck cutoffs by characterizing the flow field, morphology, and sediment distribution through neck cutoffs with complex planform configurations located on the White River, Arkansas. Frequency-Dependent Photothermal Measurement Of Thermal Diffusivity For Opaque And Non-Opaque Materials: Application To Crystals Of Tips-Pentacene, Maryam Shahi, Joseph W. Brill

We propose the use of a frequency-dependent photothermal measurement as a complement to light-flash, i.e., time-dependent, measurements to determine the through-plane thermal diffusivity of small, thin samples, e.g., semiconducting polymers and small organic molecule crystals. The analysis is extended from its previous use with some opaque conducting polymers to materials with finite absorption coefficients, such as crystals of 6,13-bis(triisopropylsilylethynyl)pentacene. Taking into account the finite absorption coefficients of the latter gives a value of diffusivity, D ≈ 0.10 mm2/s, much smaller than previously estimated and more consistent with its expected value. The main objective of this project is to synthesize the first family of polynuclear chromium pyrazolate complexes. Complexity in analysis of the experimental magnetic data of multinuclear complexes arises from their (2S +1)N microstates, where S is the spin of each metal center and N is the number of metal centers. For example, high-spin (HS)-FeIII3 has 216 microstates and HS-FeIII8 ≈ 1.7x106 microstates (S= 5/2). However, complexes with chromium(III) S = 3/2 will have a noticeable reduction of microstates. Positronium Collisions With Rare-Gas Atoms: Free-Electron Gas Plus Orthogonalizing Pseudopotential Model, R. S. Wilde, Ilya I. Fabrikant

Positronium collisions with rare-gas atoms are treated using the free-electron-gas approximation for exchange and correlation potential. The results confirm the absence of the Ramsauer-Townsend minimum in elastic scattering cross sections, but show lower cross sections in the lower-energy region when compared to previous pseudopotential calculations. This is explained by a more attractive ab initio correlation potential as compared to the previously used empirical potential. The results in the thermal-energy region agree very well with most swarm measurements for all rare-gas atoms. In this essay we look at the possibility of vacuum production of very low frequency electromagnetic radiation from a gravitational wave background (i.e. gravity's light). We also propose that this counterpart electromagnetic radiation should be detectable by a lunar orbiting satellite which is periodically occulted by the Moon (i.e., in the shadow of the Moon). For concreteness we consider the possibility of detection of both the gravitational wave and hypothesized electromagnetic radiation counterpart from the supernova core collapse of Betelgeuse

To adapt to the changes, organizations must develop dynamic capabilities for green innovation and corporate sustainability. Based on a resource-based view integrated with contingency and stakeholder theories, this study examines how strategic contingency makes differences in the transformation between learning and performance resources through innovation efforts. In the UCNτ experiment, ultracold neutrons (UCN) are confined by magnetic fields and the Earth’s gravitational field. Field-trapping mitigates the problem of UCN loss on material surfaces, which caused the largest correction in prior neutron experiments using material bottles. However, the neutron dynamics in field traps differ qualitatively from those in material bottles. In the latter case, neutrons bounce off material surfaces with significant diffusivity and the population quickly reaches a static spatial distribution with a density gradient induced by the gravitational potential. In contrast, the field-confined UCN—whose dynamics can be described by Hamiltonian mechanics—do not exhibit the stochastic behaviors …

The problem of efficiently touring a theme park so as to minimize the amount of time spent in queues is an instance of the Traveling Salesman Problem with Time-Dependent Service Times (TSP-TS). In this paper, we present a mixed-integer linear programming formulation of the TSP-TS and describe a branch-and-cut algorithm based on this model. In addition, we develop a lower bound for the TSP-TS and describe two metaheuristic approaches for obtaining good quality solutions: a genetic algorithm and a tabu search algorithm. Many studies of the Mississippi River Delta (MRD) have shown historic declines in sediment load over the last few decades. Recent studies also reported that ~50% of the suspended load during floods is sequestered within the delta. While the impact of declining sediment load on wetland loss is relatively well documented, submarine sedimentary processes on the delta front during this recent period of are understudied. The spherical metal particles produced from the centrifugal atomization process have been the topic of numerous theoretical, experimental and numerical studies from the past few years. This atomization process uses centrifugal force to break-up molten material into spherical droplets, which are quenched into solidified granules by the flow of cold air on the spherical droplets. In the present work, a transient three-dimensional multiphase CFD model is applied to three different materials: Molten slag, aqueous glycerol solution, and molten Ni-Nb to study the influence of the dimensionless parameters on the centrifugal atomization outcome.

The ADP-glucose pyrophosphorylase from wheat endosperm controls starch synthesis in seeds and has unique regulatory properties compared to others from this family. It comprises two types of subunits, but despite its importance little is known about their roles. Here, we synthesized de novo the wheat endosperm ADP-glucose pyrophosphorylase small (S) and large (L) subunit genes, heterologously expressed them in Escherichia coli, and kinetically characterized the recombinant proteins. In the present study, we investigate the adsorption characteristics of six different ionic liquids (ILs) on a fully-fluorinated graphene (fluorographene, FG) surface using electronic structure studies and associated analysis methods. A systematic comparison of differences in IL binding energies (ΔEb) with fluorographene, graphene and hexagonal boron nitride surfaces indicates that fluorination strongly decreases the binding energy compared to the other two surfaces, hence resulting in the binding energetics: ΔEb (Graphene…IL) > ΔEb (Hexagonal boron-nitride…IL) > ΔEb (Fluorographene…IL). Accurate simulations of Arctic sea ice are important for forecasting as well as for understanding the global climate. However, quantitative measures for simulation displacements are underutilized. We present five such measures proposed as being useful in the validation of simulated sea ice displacements. Using drifting buoy and satellite measurements of sea ice motion as observation, we apply the metrics in a comparison of observed displacements and predicted displacements from the Arctic sea ice simulation MPM\_ice. On 17 August 2017, the LIGO and Virgo observatories made the first direct detection of gravitational waves from the coalescence of a neutron star binary system. The detection of this gravitational-wave signal, GW170817, offers a novel opportunity to directly probe the properties of matter at the extreme conditions found in the interior of these stars. The initial, minimal-assumption analysis of the LIGO and Virgo data placed constraints on the tidal effects of the coalescing bodies, which were then translated to constraints on neutron star radii. We show that Britto-Cachazo-Feng-Witten (BCFW) recursion relations can be used to compute all tree level scattering amplitudes in terms of 2 → 2 scattering amplitude in U(N) 𝒩 = 2 Chern-Simons (CS) theory coupled to matter in the fundamental representation. As a by-product, we also obtain a recursion relation for the CS theory coupled to regular fermions, even though in this case standard BCFW deformations do not have a good asymptotic behavior. Moreover, at large N, 2 → 2 scattering can be computed exactly to all orders in ’t Hooft coupling as was done in earlier works …

Co-treatment of landfill leachate with sewage at publicly owned treatment works (POTWs) is a common leachate management practice. However, the UV absorbing property of UV-quenching substances (UVQS) present in municipal landfill leachate may significantly reduce the efficiency of disinfection at POTWs that adopt ultraviolet irradiation for disinfection. The UVQS represents an emerging concern in the solid waste and wastewater treatment industries. This study aimed to evaluate the performance of activated carbon (AC) for removal of UVQS from landfill leachate in order to address the leachate UV-quenching issue. Volcanic sulfur dioxide (SO2) emissions have been measured by ultraviolet sensors on polar‐orbiting satellites for several decades but with limited temporal resolution. This precludes studies of key processes believed to occur in young (~1–3 hr old) volcanic clouds. In 2015, the launch of the Earth Polychromatic Imaging Camera (EPIC) aboard the Deep Space Climate Observatory (DSCOVR) provided an opportunity for novel observations of volcanic eruption clouds from the first Earth‐Sun Lagrange point (L1). Heterogeneous photocatalysis is a prominent area of research with major applications in solar energy conversion, air pollution mitigation, and removal of contaminants from water. A large number of scientific papers related to the photocatalysis field and its environmental applications are published in different journals specializing in materials and nanomaterials.
