Multi-Feature Data Repository Development And Analytics For Image Cosegmentation In High-Throughput Plant Phenotyping, Rubi Quiñones, Francisco Munoz-Arriola, Sruti Das Choudhury, Ashok Samal
School of Computing: Faculty Publications
Cosegmentation is a newly emerging computer vision technique used to segment an object from the background by processing multiple images at the same time. Traditional plant phenotyping analysis uses thresholding segmentation methods which result in high segmentation accuracy. Although there are proposed machine learning and deep learning algorithms for plant segmentation, predictions rely on the specific features being present in the training set. The need for a multi-featured dataset and analytics for cosegmentation becomes critical to better understand and predict plants’ responses to the environment. High-throughput phenotyping produces an abundance of data that can be leveraged to improve segmentation accuracy …

Pressure-induced phase transitions of crystalline ethylenediamine bisborane (EDAB), a prospective hydrogen storage material, are investigated using vibrational spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, evolutionary crystal structure prediction, and density functional theory. The results indicate that EDAB undergoes two transitions in the 0–17 GPa pressure range: the first one is near 1 GPa, from the orthorhombic ambient-pressure Pbca structure (phase I) to a monoclinic structure of P21/c symmetry (phase II); the second is near 7 GPa, from phase II to another P21/c structure (phase III). The latter coexists with phase II and remains the most stable form of EDAB up …

Monodeuterated methyl groups have previously been demonstrated to provide access to long-lived nuclear spin states. This is possible when the CH2 D rotamers have sufficiently different populations and the local environment is chiral, which foments a non-negligible isotropic chemical shift difference between the two CH2 D protons. In this article, the focus is on the N-CH2 D group of N-CH2 D-2-methylpiperidine and other suitable CH2 D piperidine derivatives. We used a combined experimental and computational approach to investigate how rotameric symmetry breaking leads to a 1H CH2 D chemical shift …

Phosphorus Fertilizer And Stocking Rate Effects On Soil Microbial Biomass Of A Long-Term Dairy Farmlet Experiment, S. R. Aarons, C. R. O’Connor, C. J. P. Gourley
IGC Proceedings (1993-2023)
The effects of a range of P fertilizer rates and dairy cow stocking rates on microbial biomass carbon and phosphorus were compared in a long-term farmlet trial in southeastern Australia. Pastures were stocked at 2, 3, or 4 cows/ha and received fertilizer at rates of 0, 35, 70 or 140 kgP/ha. There was no effect of either P fertilizer rate or stocking rate on microbial biomass C from 1995 to 1998. Increasing P application rate significantly increased the chloroform-released microbial P flush measured, but stocking rate had no effect on microbial P. There were significant temporal changes, with the seasonal …

Dry Matter Accumulation And Partitioning Between Vegetative And Reproductive Organs In Alfalfa (Medicago Sativa L.), E. D. Bolaños-Aguilar, Christian Huyghe, B. Julier, C. Ecalle
IGC Proceedings (1993-2023)
This work investigated the partitioning of dry matter between vegetative and reproductive plant organs in alfalfa during the reproductive period under field conditions. Two French varieties (Europe and Magali) were studied. Both varieties showed similar growth pattern of the different plant organs in 1998 and 1999. The mean dry matter of vegetative organs (shoots and leaves) over the two years was higher in Europe (567g/m2) than Magali (470g/m2). No vegetative growth was observed during the reproductive period. The root organs (measured to a depth of 0.20 m) and the reproductive organs showed an increase in dry …

Background: Catechol, 1,2-dihydroxybenzene, prepared through bacterial biotransformation from higher order polyphenols, has been proposed to regulate carbohydrate metabolism, especially in the context of type 2 diabetes. This review aims to contextualize this finding. It describes the bacterial biosynthesis of catechol both from glucose, and as a degradation product of higher order natural products through bacterial transformation. The review then considers the mechanism of action of glycemic-regulating catechol-containing materials and the complications arising from balancing their inherent activity with that of catechol, their common degradation product. It then enumerates potential dietary sources of catechin from common foods. Methods: Articles were found …

This work attempts to fill a gap by exploring the human dimension in particular, by trying to understand the motivation of software professionals for taking up and sustaining their careers as software testers. Towards that goal, four surveys were conducted in four countries—India, Canada, Cuba, and China—to try to understand how professional software engineers perceive and value work-related factors that could influence their motivation to start or move into software testing careers. From our sample of 220 software professionals, we observed that very few were keen to take up testing careers. Some aspects of software testing, such as the potential …

We study the connection between the X-ray and ultraviolet (UV) properties of the broad absorption line (BAL) wind in the highly X-ray variable quasar PG 2112+059 by comparing Chandra-ACIS data with contemporaneous UV HST/STIS spectra in three different epochs. We observe a correlation whereby an increase in the equivalent widths (EWs) of the BALs is accompanied by a redder UV spectrum. The growth in the BAL EWs is also accompanied by a significant dimming in soft X-ray emission (≳2, keV), consistent with increased absorption. Variations in the hard X-ray emission (≳2, keV) are only accompanied by minor spectral variations of …

Petrography And Geochemical Decomposition Parameters Of Crystalline Rocks; Demirköy Intrusive Body (Dib), Nw Turkey, Ezgi Ulusoy, Yusuf Kağan Kadioğlu
Bulletin of the Mineral Research and Exploration
The crystalline rocks represent the most weathering rock groups due to their textural and mineralogical decomposition. This study, focused on the petrographic properties and geochemical variation of the altered rocks from Demirköy Intrusive Body (DIB) located at NW Turkey were examined based on the location of structural and morphological properties. DIB consists ofintrusive rocks in the composition of ranging from granite to gabbro. The sampling made from the dominant rock units composing of granodiorite and quartz diorite, within the DIB a cross weathering section divided into three levels as regolit, saprolite and saprock. For each level of all the section …

Faculty Work Comprehensive List
Camel Up is a popular board game in which players score points by betting on camels which move randomly via a dice mechanic. The game is available both as a board game [1], as well as an IOS App [2]. Because of the random nature of the camels it is generally difficult to play optimally, but one can nevertheless develop various strategies. Probabilistic knowledge proves helpful in assigning relative value to potential game choices. We discuss how this game can be used to motivate and provide context for learning about the concepts of conditional probability and expected value. Also we …

Sorption Of Metals At The Barite (001)-Water Interface, Inva Braha
Student Theses
Abstract
Ion desorption processes control the retention of ions, such as Pb2+, at barite surfaces, whereas ion adsorption processes are a likely initial step in the incorporation of divalent cations, such as Sr2+ and Pb2+, into barite. Based on previous studies on samples dominated by flat terraces with relatively few defects, Sr2+ and Pb2+ adsorb and incorporate at the barite (001)-water interface (Bracco et al., 2019; Bracco et al., 2020). Here, I measured how susceptible lead (Pb) is to desorption and the role surface variability plays in its sorption behavior. First, I measured …

We conducted interferometric observations with the CHARA Array of transiting super-Earth host HD 97658 and measured its limb-darkened angular diameter to be theta(LD) = 0.314 +/- 0.004 mas. The combination of the angular diameter with the Gaia EDR3 parallax value with zero-point correction (pi = 46.412 +/- 0.022 mas, d =21.546 +/- 0.011 pc) yields a physical radius of R-star = 0.728 +/- 0.008 R-circle dot. We also measured the bolometric flux of the star to be F-bol = 2.42 +/- 0.05 x 10(-8) erg s(-1) cm(-2), which, together with angular size, allows a measurement of the effective temperature T-eff …

Freedom Of Will, Physics, And Human Intelligence: An Idea, Miroslav Svitek, Vladik Kreinovich, Nguyen Hoang Phuong
Freedom Of Will, Physics, And Human Intelligence: An Idea, Miroslav Svitek, Vladik Kreinovich, Nguyen Hoang Phuong
Departmental Technical Reports (CS)
Among the main fundamental challenges related to physics and human intelligence are: How can we reconcile the free will with the deterministic character of physical equations? What is the physical meaning of extra spatial dimensions needed to make quantum physics consistent? and Why are we often smarter than brain-simulating neural networks? In this paper, we show that while each of these challenges is difficult to resolve on its own, it may be possible to resolve all three of them if we consider them together. The proposed possible solution is that human reasoning uses the extra spatial dimensions. This may sound …

Shall We Be Foxes Or Hedgehogs: What Is The Best Balance For Research?, Miroslav Svitek, Olga Kosheleva, Shahnaz Shahbazova, Vladik Kreinovich
Departmental Technical Reports (CS)
Some researchers have few main ideas that they apply to many different problems -- they are called hedgehogs. Other researchers have many ideas but apply them to fewer problems -- they are called foxes. Both approaches have their advantages and disadvantages. What is the best balance between these two approaches? In this paper, we provide general recommendations about this balance. Specifically, we conclude that the optimal productivity is when the time spent on generating new ideas is equal to the time spent on understanding new applications. So, if for a researcher, understanding a new problem is much easier than generating …

Why Rectified Linear Activation Functions? Why Max-Pooling? A Possible Explanation, Julio C. Urenda, Vladik Kreinovich
Departmental Technical Reports (CS)
At present, the most successful machine learning technique is deep learning, that uses rectified linear activation function (ReLU) s(x) = max(x,0) as a non-linear data processing unit. While this selection was guided by general ideas (which were often imprecise), the selection itself was still largely empirical. This leads to a natural question: are these selections indeed the best or are there even better selections? A possible way to answer this question would be to provide a theoretical explanation of why these selections are -- in some reasonable sense -- the best. This paper provides a possible theoretical explanation for this …

Why Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (Ndvi)?, Francisco Zapata, Eric Smith, Vladik Kreinovich, Nguyen Hoang Phuong
Departmental Technical Reports (CS)
Plants play a very important role in ecological systems -- they transform CO2 into oxygen. It is therefore very important to be able to estimate the overall amount of live green vegetation in a given area. The most efficient way to provide such a global analysis is to use remote sensing, i.e., multi-spectral photos taken from satellites, drones, planes, etc. At present, one of the most efficient ways to detect, based on remote sensing data, how much live green vegetation an area contains is to compute the value of the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI). In this paper, we provide …

One of the motivations for Zadeh's development of fuzzy logic -- and one of the explanations for the success of fuzzy techniques -- is the empirical observation that as complexity rises, meaningful statements lose precision. In this paper, we provide a possible explanation for this empirical phenomenon.

What Is A Reasonable Way To Make Predictions?, Leonardo Orea Amador, Vladik Kreinovich
What Is A Reasonable Way To Make Predictions?, Leonardo Orea Amador, Vladik Kreinovich
Departmental Technical Reports (CS)
Predictions are usually based on what is called laws of nature: many times, we observe the same relation between the states at different moments of time, and we conclude that the same relation will occur in the future. The more times the relation repeats, the more confident we are that the same phenomenon will be re-peated again. This is how Newton's laws and other laws came into being. This is what is called inductive reasoning. However, there are other reasonable approaches. For example, assume that a person speeds and is not caught. This may be repeated two times, three times …

Localized Learning: A Possible Alternative To Current Deep Learning Techniques, Javier Viana, Kelly Cohen, Anca Ralescu, Stephan Ralescu, Vladik Kreinovich
Departmental Technical Reports (CS)
At present, the most efficient deep learning technique is the use of deep neural networks. However, recent empirical results show that in some situations, it is even more efficient to use "localized" learning -- i.e., to divide the domain of inputs into sub-domains, learn the desired dependence separately on each sub-domain, and then "smooth" the resulting dependencies into a single algorithm. In this paper, we provide theoretical explanation for these empirical successes.
