A Lot On My Plate: Family Dishware Serving Up A History Of Global Commercialization, Grace Thanasiu
Student Projects from the Archives
The “Hearthside” shaped plate was created by the Homer Laughlin China Company sometime between 1963 and 1973. My family owns such a plate, and ours originally belonged to a set of plates that was “purchased” by my grandmother, Mary Ruhlin, with books and books full of redemption stamps. Redemption stamps were literal stamps that stores distributed to customers, who could later redeem them for cash or merchandise at affiliated redemption centers that partnered with grocery stores and businesses; redemption stamps functioned as a precursor to the modern loyalty card! The need for a reputable pottery company like Homer Laughlin to …

Software for qualitative research analysis ATLAS-ti 7.0 was used to aid the data analysis. The result of the study among others shows that RIM is predominantly conducted manually in the university with a lot of challenges. Various circumstances have contributed to these challenges; the most prominent among these is the lack of standard RIM policy to guide and control …

Library Faculty and Staff Publications
Minimal descriptive practices have been embraced by archives over the past fifteen years for their efficiency and practicality. This paper explores the strengths and weaknesses of minimal description within the context of digitized collections and evaluates them against the assumptions made by cultural heritage professionals. It considers whether minimal description provides digitized collections with sufficient metadata to meet MPLP’s user-centered goals of improving access, sufficient context to ensure collections are understandable within their digital environments, and sufficient framework to facilitate data exchange across systems, all while considering MPLP within archival ecosystems that impact labor and resource allocation. The authors offer …

Teaching Archival Research Methods Through Projects In Ethnohistory, Veronica L. Denison, Alyssa Willett, Alexandra Taitt, Medeia Csoba Dehass
Journal of Western Archives
During the spring semester of 2015 and the fall semester of 2016, two cohorts of students at the University of Alaska Anchorage learned archival research skills as part of their methodological training in the course, Ethnohistory of Alaska Natives, which subsequently led to the development of further individual research projects. As part of the course, students provided metadata to folders within an archival collection. This article explores the semester long projects, including the hardships of finding and using culturally appropriate metadata, lessons learned, and the impact the project had on students, the archivist, and instructor.

Losing It: Strategies For Reducing Archival Collection Backlogs, Sarah R. Jones, Cyndi Shein
Provenance, Journal of the Society of Georgia Archivists
Archival backlogs have been discussed at length in professional literature and been the focus of many specially funded projects over the years. However, little is written about the successes and failures of these “elimination” projects, leaving institutions with minimal guidance for reducing their own un- or under-processed collection backlogs. This article will share details of a three-year archival backlog elimination project at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas and provide strategies for institutions planning to begin their own project. The authors will discuss project staffing models and accounting for turnover, establishing and re-evaluating project priorities, creating workflow and documentation strategies, …
