Digitize Your Yearbooks: Creating Digital Access While Considering Student Privacy And Other Legal Issues, April K. Anderson-Zorn, Dallas Long
Journal of Contemporary Archival Studies
Student yearbooks are distinctive cultural records. For the schools and universities that produced them, yearbooks promoted a shared sense of identity and experience among students and helped create enduring loyalty to the institutions long after the students graduated. For scholars and other users, yearbooks are unique primary sources that provide insight into past eras of local student life and culture. In regards to user engagement and preserving local histories, student yearbooks should be ideal candidates for digitization by libraries and archives. However, yearbooks are challenging digitization projects because they are likely to contain privacy-sensitive photographs and other information as well …

Report On A Survey Of Iwu Faculty And Staff Attitudes About Archiving Honors And Jwp Works, Meg Miner
Administrative Reports
This report is a complete account of responses to a survey I disseminated after Spring semester of 2021. That survey purposefully asked more questions than what I needed for the book chapter I was working on.* Library personnel recognize that the interactions students have with departmental staff and faculty advisors influence the views students may form about self-archiving in DC@IWU. We have tried at various points to educate our colleagues about our work, but until this year we have not formally sought to understand if our goals match those of our departmental colleagues. I also added survey questions specific to …

The Value Of A Note: A Finding Aid Usability Study, Betts Coup
The Value Of A Note: A Finding Aid Usability Study, Betts Coup
Journal of Contemporary Archival Studies
Finding aids have long been an essential part of archivists’ work. To create a finding aid is to create a surrogate of an archival collection. Multiple levels of description are used to distill information about the unique groupings and parts of a collection and to place its content into context. Archivists make decisions about what to include in a finding aid based on their own judgment as trained professionals, but also with the intent to create a finding aid that will be genuinely helpful to researchers. Indeed, as the revised principles of Describing Archives: A Content Standard (DACS) state: “Users …

The City As A Learning Lab: Using Historical Maps And Walking Seminars To Anchor Place-Based Research, Anne E. Leonard, Jason Montgomery
Publications and Research
Information literacy, inquiry, and empirical observation skills are essential to undergraduate students’ success, supporting the development of their independent critical thinking skills. In this chapter, we discuss an interdisciplinary course that we, an architecture professor and a librarian, co-taught at New York City College of Technology. The course, Learning Places: Understanding the City, combines place-based learning with primary source research, developing students’ abilities to observe an urban site chosen for study and to document their observations, and in the process build a line of inquiry for further research. The documented observations, newly created primary sources in their own right, initiated …

Library Management With Fayol's 14 Principles: Practical Insights, Parbat Chhetri
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
This study explores the practical application of Henri Fayol's 14 Principles of Management in the context of library management. Amid the evolving landscape of libraries, these principles offer a potential framework for optimizing operations and enhancing services. Through a document analysis of web resources, the researcher thoroughly examines each principle's adaptability to libraries. The study's purpose is to discern how these principles can effectively guide decision-making, workflow, and staff engagement within diverse library settings. While the findings shed light on the positive impacts of principle integration, it's important to note that the application may vary due to library-specific nuances. This …

Researching The History Of 55 Fifth Avenue, Ingrid Mattson
Library Staff Online Publications
55 Fifth Avenue (home to Cardozo School of Law) is the birthplace of a number of truly remarkable cultural institutions in New York City. As part of a conference highlighting Billy Holiday’s impact on music, issues of race in the United States, and Cardozo, I researched the history of the law school’s building, where Billie Holiday first recorded professionally in 1933 with Columbia Records with the producer John Hammond. Here is some of that history and the research strategies I employed to uncover it.

The History And Current Challenges Of Libraries In Japan, Francis A. Alix
The History And Current Challenges Of Libraries In Japan, Francis A. Alix
SLIS Connecting
Japan's libraries have many positive attributes and continue to evolve. However, many library sectors struggle with serving users because of staff outsourcing, library leadership, and a focus on circulation statistics that prevent them from developing into 21st-century information and community centers. This paper reviews the history and current status of each library sector, including their services and staffing. It then examines their current challenges and how professionalism, librarian education, and community engagement are the main challenges to their success and suggests recommendations to elevate them to compete in the global arena.

Locating Banned Books: A Collection Analysis Of Libraries In Arkansas And Tennessee, Floyce Thomas
SLIS Connecting
No library can make everything available to its patrons. However, libraries should adhere to the American Library Association (ALA) for guidance on what items are banned from the library's collections. Censorship and intellectual freedom have gained attention for how it affects libraries and the restraints it individualized for banned or forbidden items. Difficulties are characterized as formal, composed complaints recorded with a library or school asking for specific materials to be expelled from view because the substance may not be considered appropriate for the users.
The purpose of this study is to compare a selected set of previously banned books …

Reaching Out: A Publication Trend Analysis Of Scholarly Articles Discussing Graphic Novels And Reluctant Or Struggling Readers, Mary Kirkham
SLIS Connecting
Graphic novels combine short text and pictures to tell a story or convey information while still engaging the reader visually. This is a potentially useful tool for reaching out to struggling and reluctant readers. Struggling readers have difficulty reading and understanding what it is they are reading. Pictures allow for more context clues than just text alone, allowing for the potential for greater success in comprehension for struggling readers. Reluctant readers, on the other hand, may have more of a distaste for reading. In some cases, they are capable of understanding what they read, but they do not enjoy the …

Ethics And Cyber Libraries: Challenges Facing The Values And Ethics In Lis, Jessica Omer
SLIS Connecting
Cyber libraries face many challenges when it comes to access. These challenges can lead to cyber libraries failing in following the guidelines for the values and ethics of the LIS professional. Some authors have argued that cyber libraries are the future of libraries. They argue that patrons want information immediately at their fingertips. The fact that library budgets are shrinking and electronic sources can be cheaper cause many libraries to lean more towards the idea of cyber libraries. However, while digital libraries do have their advantages, they are not perfect. We live in a time where librarians have their feet …

Out-Of-Print Books As E-Books: A Collection Analysis, Mary Frances Calix
SLIS Connecting
In recent years, archival institutions have begun to digitally archive or preserve the items in their collections. This way, items are more accessible to those wanting to perform research but not necessarily handle the original documents and are not likely to be permanently damaged. One example of a digital preservation project is the one that forms the basis for this paper- the Oklahoma Historical Society's collection of out-of-print historical books that have been made available as e-books. Created over three years ago, this collection contains 22 books about Oklahoma and Texas history. The original publication dates of the books cover …

Web Archiving In North Carolina's Piedmont Triad During Covid-19, Jessica Dame
Journal of Contemporary Archival Studies
The University of North Carolina at Greensboro’s Martha Blakeney Special Collections and University Archives (SCUA) utilized Archive-It’s COVID-19 Web Archiving Special Campaign in the spring of 2020 to expanded web archiving efforts to include COVID-19 related web content from the Piedmont Triad region. It was important to SCUA to archive local web content during a historical moment for future research and context that had the potential to be lost, in a way that did not require the community to create and submit content during a global pandemic. Challenges arose including the need to select material quickly, capturing as much content …

Increasingly, much of daily life is conducted online. School, work, communication with friends and family, as well as news and images, are accessed through a variety of websites. Information that once was printed, physically mailed or kept in photo albums and notebooks may now be available only online. The COVID-19 pandemic has pushed even more interactions to the web. You may not realize portions of the internet are constantly disappearing. As librarians and archivists, we strengthen collective memory by preserving materials that document the cultural heritage of society, including on the web. You can help us save the internet, too, …

The Platinum Rule Meets The Golden Minimum: Inclusive And Efficient Archival Description Of Oral Histories, Weatherly A. Stephan
Journal of Contemporary Archival Studies
This article presents an oral history description methodology, rooted in both extensible processing practices as well as cultural humility, that results in efficiently-processed but richly-described oral history interviews. The author explores three key questions. Is there a way to process oral history to the golden minimum? Is there a way to process oral history ethically, with an empathetic approach to narrators and the communities they originate from or discuss? And is there a way to do both at the same time? In addition to the application of this descriptive methodology, the article examines the archives and oral history professional ethics …
