The Reaction Of Hospitalized Children To Food, Lois Masat Magnussen May 1964

The Reaction Of Hospitalized Children To Food, Lois Masat Magnussen

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Hospital personnel are becoming more aware of the fact that hospitalization is traumatic to the emotional life of the young child. Since eating habits and emotions are so closely allied, it is probable that the young child's eating pattern will be affected during hospitalization. The purpose of this study was to determine the reaction of children between the ages of one through four to food during the first three days of hospitalization at the White Memorial Hospital. The method chosen to obtain this information was the descriptive survey. The tools used were a checklist for the researcher to record her …

The Effects Of Content Ambiguity On Response Sets In Two Populations, G. Eugene Brown Apr 1964

The Effects Of Content Ambiguity On Response Sets In Two Populations, G. Eugene Brown

Master's Theses

The study of response sets in both interest and personality inventories has received a great deal of attention and has caused much controversy concerning some of the related variables. Although response sets have long been recognized, only the last few years or so have witnessed the increased interest they have received as a potentially powerful approach in the study or human behavior.

The present study is concerned with the problem of test item ambiguity in measures designed to reflect two response sets in both student and psychiatric groups. The major purpose is that of determining whether content has the same …

Creativity And The Lowenfeld Mosaic Test With First, Second And Third Grade Children, Shelby Hargrave Cooke Apr 1964

Creativity And The Lowenfeld Mosaic Test With First, Second And Third Grade Children, Shelby Hargrave Cooke

Master's Theses

Based on the findings of the Walker study of the Lowenfield Mosaic test (1957) and the [other] studies of creativity, the following hypotheses may be made. Creative children will make original or novel designs and show complex use of color and shape. Their designs will be more asymmetrical in shape and placement and contain a greater number of places than the designs of noncreative children. They will make representational rather than abstract designs, and their human and animal figures will show motion.

An Investigation Of Card Concepts Using The Holtzman Inkblot Technique Form A As Stimuli, Mildred A. Gilman Apr 1964

An Investigation Of Card Concepts Using The Holtzman Inkblot Technique Form A As Stimuli, Mildred A. Gilman

Master's Theses

Herman Rorschach's book, Psychodiagnostik published in 1921, introduced what is probably the best known of the projective techniques. Rorschach 's untimely death in 1922 left much of the development of the inkblot technique to others and during the decades that followed, the Rorschach blots "developed rapidly as the method par excellence for assessing the motivation, thought processes and basic personality structure of the individual. Beck, Klopfer and others, presented methods of scoring and interpretation. Both "attracted large followings of psychiatrists, clinical psychologists, and others concerned mainly with the psychodiagnosis of the abnormal personality" while "the main stream or academic psychology …

An Investigation Of The Visual Processes Involved In The Vertical-Horizontal Illusion, Robert L. Vette Feb 1964

An Investigation Of The Visual Processes Involved In The Vertical-Horizontal Illusion, Robert L. Vette

Masters Theses

The vertical-horizontal illusion has been the object of experimental study for many years. The first man to investigate the vertical-horizontal illusion was probably Oppel in 1854. Since the time of Oppel's first experiment, many theories have been advanced in an attempt to explain what causes this illusion to occur in our perception of connected vertical-horizontal lines. The primary theory that is most widely accepted states that the vertical line in the "T" illusion will be judged longer because of the vertical-horizontal relationship.

Pan (1934) suggested that the "T" figure illusion was not due entirely to the interaction of the vertical …

Toys For Tinies And Gifts For Children, O. Evans Scott

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

Special care is needed in selecting toys for young children. Well-chosen toys can aid mental and physical development and give many hours of safe, satisfying play; ill-chosen toys can cause anxiety and frustration and may even be dangerous.

This article gives hints on selecting toys for various age groups and suggests some suitable options.

A Study Of Boy Scout And Aaronic Priesthood Activity (Boys Age Twelve To Fourteen) In Selected Lds Wards, Orval Leonard Nelson Jan 1964

A Study Of Boy Scout And Aaronic Priesthood Activity (Boys Age Twelve To Fourteen) In Selected Lds Wards, Orval Leonard Nelson

Theses and Dissertations

This study had two main purposes. Its first is to test the theoretical proposition that there is a carry-over into other systems of behavior as a result of group cohesion. For example, as scouting activities increased, Aaronic Priesthood activities increased. And according to the reference group theory, individuals join reference groups to fulfill certain needs, wants, goals, etc. In an active Boy Scout program many of these needs, wants, and goals are satisfied as the boys participate in the activities outlined by the Boy Scouts of America. Furthermore, once these needs are satisfied, change toward conformity tends to carry over …

Reliability Of Measurements Of Level Of Intellectual Functioning Of Geriatric Patients, Janet Aline Baker Jan 1964

Reliability Of Measurements Of Level Of Intellectual Functioning Of Geriatric Patients, Janet Aline Baker

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The primary purpose of this study was to measure geriatric patients’ levels of intellectual functioning in order to determine the reliability of several specific test instruments. From the battery of measurements used in the study, it was an additional objective to recommend which of these test instruments, or combination thereof, would be most applicable for geriatric patients, based on the empirical findings of this study.

Level of intellectual functioning may certainly be influenced by many factors. Therefore, it was part of this study to measure and control for the effects of the following variable: sex, age, education, and medication.

A Developmental Study Of Temporal Judgment, Faye Florena Hagemeyer Jan 1964

A Developmental Study Of Temporal Judgment, Faye Florena Hagemeyer

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Temporal disorganization is a symptom of disorder manifested by both the aged psychotic and the harmless sanile. The purpose of this study is to investigate the relationship of temporal judgment, specifically the adult human’s ability to judge the passage of time accurately, to chronological age. The study was suggested by a prominent geriatrician who conjecture as to whether the disability to estimate and to order time effectively was a dysfunction peculiar to senility and its gradual deterioration even in normal human beings in the ability to judge time accurately.

Using a time estimation test requiring judgement of various intervals of …

The Use Of Photographs As A Performance Measure Of Personality Rigidity, Edgar Allen Smith Jan 1964

The Use Of Photographs As A Performance Measure Of Personality Rigidity, Edgar Allen Smith

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The literature on rigidity reveals a concentration in two fairly distinct areas: that of problem solving for cognitive rigidity) and motor rigidity. The early investigators felt that assessing these peripheral response mechanism would give a measure of the deeper, central personality mechanism that affects all of behavior. However, such an assumption was highly questionable and based more on analogical reasoning than on empirical evidence. It was Cattel who first pointed out that assuming motor rigidity "extends also through all dissappontement to feel or think perseveratively is a speculation undertaken at one's own risk" (1946, p. 233). Luchins (1951), concerned with …
