Schedules Of Reinforcement With Intracranial Simulation, Randall K. Flory '64 Jan 1964

Schedules Of Reinforcement With Intracranial Simulation, Randall K. Flory '64

Honors Projects

Mixed and multiple aperiodic and ratio schedules of reinforcement were maintained by rats which had stainless steel electrodes surgically implanted in specific areas of their midbrains. The "reinforcing" stimulus used was a 100-cycle biphasic, square wave of a one-second duration. The voltage ranged from 1.0 to 2.0 volts and the current from .10 to .50 milliamperes. Four subjects (S's) were used in the study. Three of the S's received electrical brain stimulation (EBS) and the fourth received food pellets as reinforcement. Only the latter "food control" animal ,was run on a 36-hour food deprivation schedule. All other subjects were not …

Dogmatism And Perceptual Rigidity, Sylvia Joan Joy Jan 1964

Dogmatism And Perceptual Rigidity, Sylvia Joan Joy

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Early efforts to relate personality rigidity and perceptual rigidity have left volumes of data which are somewhat ambiguous and largely inconclusive. These studies have, in general, rested upon two assumptions: (1) that any measure of perceptual rigidity may be related to a measure of personality rigidity, and (2) that the relationship between the two variables is linear. Subsequent data have placed both assumptions in doubt. Several studies indicate that only certain forms of perceptual rigidity may be directly related to personality rigidity (Baer, 1961; Bogen, 1962; Chown, 1959). Other studies have, directly or indirectly, introduced the possibility of a non-linear …

Kinesthetic Perception And Schizophrenia, Charles Robert Cherry Jan 1964

Kinesthetic Perception And Schizophrenia, Charles Robert Cherry

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

It was the purpose of this study to compare normals with schizophrenic psychiatric patients as to their ability to reproduce movements perceived by kinesthetic stimulation. Kinesthetic perception, for the purpose of this study, was restricted to the reproduction of single arm-hand movements in a horizontal plane, away from the body. The magnitude of errors as a function of distance moved was defined as an indicator of kinesthetic perception.

Relationships Within And Between The 1960 Stanford-Binet L-M And The Goodenough Intelligence Test With Intellectually Sub-Average Children, Frederick M. Rudie

Student Work

The examination of relationships within and between the 1960 Stanford-Binet and the Goodenough Intelligence Test provided the basis for this thesis, Before considering the relationships, some background on the testing movement, Binet Scales, Stanford-Binet, Goodenough Draw- A-Man Test, Stanford-Binet vocabulary subtest* Stanford-Binet scatter, and the slow learner would prove useful.

Anxiety And Fear In Personality Structure, Robert Robert Mickelson Aug 1963

Anxiety And Fear In Personality Structure, Robert Robert Mickelson

Graduate Student Research Papers

The problem to be studied is the effect of anxiety and fear on the personality. Concern with this problem stems from the fact that on many occasions anxiety and fear blocks a person's free approach to experience and often anxiety and fear prevent one from building sound interpersonal and intergroup relations.

Effects Of A Multiple Schedule Of Collective Reinforcement On Shaping The Cultivative Response Rate Of Three-Man Teams, David D. Burnstein Jul 1963

Effects Of A Multiple Schedule Of Collective Reinforcement On Shaping The Cultivative Response Rate Of Three-Man Teams, David D. Burnstein

Psychology ETDs

The principle of reinforcement developed by experimenting with individual subjects has been extended in recent years for use with groups. In most of these studies some social interaction within the group is reinforced. For example, Azrin and Lindsley (1956) and Lindsley (1961) have manipulated imitation, cooperation, and competition between two subjects in an operant conditioning situation. Levin and Shapiro (1962) manipulated conversation between members of a group through appropriate reinforcement. Glaser and Klaus (1962) conditioned a team of two monitors and an observer to respond as a unit by reinforcing the group only when each member had made the proper …

The Concept Of Adaptive Behavior In An Institutional Setting, John C. Jones Jul 1963

The Concept Of Adaptive Behavior In An Institutional Setting, John C. Jones

Electronic Theses & Dissertations

The present study is an attempt to objectify the subjective concept of adaptive behavior and to show the effect of institutionalization upon adaptive behavior.

The development of an Adaptive Behavior Rating Sheet consisting of forty-five items is a major portion of this study.

The Adaptive Behavior Rating Sheet was administered to a sample of ninety patients who, at the time of administration, had been in the Parsons State Hospital and Training Center (PSH&TC) between one year six months and two years six months.

The raw scores were statistically reduced to comply with the five levels of adaptive behavior employed at …

The Comparative Efficiency Of Two Instruments For The Diagnosis Of Juvenile Delinquency, Judith A. Nixon Jun 1963

The Comparative Efficiency Of Two Instruments For The Diagnosis Of Juvenile Delinquency, Judith A. Nixon

Psychology ETDs

The present research concerns itself partially with the study of the delinquent and possibilities of differentiating between the delinquent and the non-delinquent using two different types of tests. However, before proceeding directly into the purpose of the study, a brief discussion of the delinquent will be undertaken in order to present background or foundation for this research.

Application Of Bower's Association Model To Paired-Associate Transfer, Edward J. Rickert Jun 1963

Application Of Bower's Association Model To Paired-Associate Transfer, Edward J. Rickert

Psychology ETDs

The purpose of this experiment was to examine the predictive power of Bower’s associative model in an investigation of the “hook-up” phase of paired-associate transfer. Presumably, if the model had sufficient power to generate results predicting transfer performance, then other aspects of the verbal learning process, e.g., the response-learning stage, might conceivably submit to a similar analysis. Thus a synthesis of the laws governing verbal learning could possibly be achieved via mathematical integration.

The Relationship Between The Wechsler-Bellevue Subtests And Academic Achievement Using Institutionalized Retardates, Fred Richard Seybold Jun 1963

The Relationship Between The Wechsler-Bellevue Subtests And Academic Achievement Using Institutionalized Retardates, Fred Richard Seybold

Student Work

The relation of intelligence to achievement is complex, and studies have yielded varying and inconsistent results. It is recognized that intelligence is only one variable of many which contributes to some degree to one’s educational attainments. However, in the case of mental retardation, there is no doubt that intelligence is one of the most important factors influencing academic achievement.

Identification Of Emotional Needs Of Patients With Infectious Hepatitis, Elizabeth Tidmore Shafqat

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

It was the purpose of this study to identify the emotional needs of patients with infectious hepatitis through the use of nursing process studies. The information obtained, it was hoped, would be helpful in giving nurses better insight into the emotional needs of these patients and to give a basis for planning nursing care.

The descriptive survey was the method used; the tool, the nursing process study. Nursing care was given to six patients between the ages of 18 and 45 who had infectious hepatitis without other complications.

The nursing process studies were filled out by the investigator on each …

A Further Study Of Perceptual Defense, Alma L. Carlisle May 1963

A Further Study Of Perceptual Defense, Alma L. Carlisle

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

For many years, psychologists have been trying to find the relationship between perception and different factors of personality. Different experimental techniques were constructed to measure these concepts. One of the tools used to measure personality factors and their effect on perception was the tachistoscope. Through the use of this instrument, words or pictures could be flashed on a screen at varying rates of speed, or illumination. The subject upon watching these flashes, would relate the information which he perceived.

Distress In Children Going To X-Ray, Ina Madge Longway May 1963

Distress In Children Going To X-Ray, Ina Madge Longway

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

It is commonly recognized that hospitalized children need psychological support and preparation for painful procedures. It is probable that little thought is given by hospital personnel to a similar preparation of the child for non-painful procedures. This study attempted to evaluate the distress incurred by children subjected to non-painful hospital procedures with little or no preparation. The procedure of x-ray was selected as being common and typical. The method used was the descriptive survey. The tools used were the taking of a series of six blood pressure readings per child, the administration of two forms of a short psychological test …

Development Of Circadian Sleep-Wakefulness Rhythm In A Healthy Boy Gauged By Circadian Quotients, Ellen Reeker, Michael Diffley Jan 1963

Development Of Circadian Sleep-Wakefulness Rhythm In A Healthy Boy Gauged By Circadian Quotients, Ellen Reeker, Michael Diffley

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

The circadian quotient, briefly CQ, serves to estimate the prominence of a rhythm with a period of about 24 hours. The CQ may be computed from so-called variance spectrum analysis, among other procedures ( 1) . Computational details and some applications have been discussed earlier (1 , 2). We wish to illustrate herein the use of the CQ for gauging the development of a circadian sleep-wakefulness rhythm in the senior author's first-born child, FAR, also documented in general terms, elsewhere ( 3).
