Psychological Components In Chronic Urticaria, David L. Blumenthal
Psychological Components In Chronic Urticaria, David L. Blumenthal
Graduate Thesis Collection
There has been wide recognition for a number of years that psychological components played a part in the etiology and treatment of some cases of chronic urticaria. Divergent opinion has been expressed regarding the importance of these components and their specific indentification. Most contentions in this area are supported by meager experimental evidence and the formulations are too often based on the superficial observation of a large number of cases or on the intensive study of the individual case.
The hypothesis of this research is that siqnificant psvchological components exist in patients with chronic urticaria and that these components are …

The Influence Of Error Density On Error Detection Efficiency, Edward A. Ahr
The Influence Of Error Density On Error Detection Efficiency, Edward A. Ahr
Psychology ETDs
Statement of the problem.—It was the purpose of this study (a) to investigate the effect of error density (level, rate, or number of errors) on checking efficiency in a proofreading situation under normal conditions, i.e., comfortable working conditions without stress; and (b) to investigate the effects of experience in detecting errors at one level of density on the detection of errors at a later time in which the density level has been changed. This would show if there is a relationship between signal detection and habituation as well as signal density, and would reflect the possible role of learning in …

A Study Of Personality Characteristics And Effectiveness Of Job Performance Of Usaf Non-Commissioned Officers Instructing Basic Military Training, John R. Grotzinger
A Study Of Personality Characteristics And Effectiveness Of Job Performance Of Usaf Non-Commissioned Officers Instructing Basic Military Training, John R. Grotzinger
Student Work
Years of service in the Air Force has served to reveal the need for an increased awareness of the high cost of training personnel. While many factors are involved in this problem, one particularly important facet is the type and quality of leadership, instruction and supervision which basic trainees are s u b jected to in their initial period of adjustment to military life. This inchoate period of adjustment in the Armed Services is a particularly sensitive one for the individual.

Ways To Mental Health: West And East, George F. Melody
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
What is the psychosocial condition of Western man? What has happened to Apollonian man, characterized by order, harmony and leisure? Why has the ideal or Apollonian man (so well described by Nietzsche and Spengler) given way to Dionysian man ... Faustian man? Whence has gone the Apollonian safeguard, essential to measure, constraint, health and love?
How really sick is Western man? Why is he not at peace with himself, his family, his associates, people in other countries who may have political philosophies different from his own ... nay, with God? An inventory of the concrete condition of Western man may …
The Relationship Of Union Attitude To Work Performance, Donald Leo Wass
The Relationship Of Union Attitude To Work Performance, Donald Leo Wass
Masters Theses
Present-day management is aware of the high work-output characteristic of some “rugged individualists" who have "anti- union" sentiments. Studies concerning individuals classified as "ratebusters” have been made by Dalton (4) and by Roethlisberger and Dickson (5). The higher production efficiency of the “ratebuster" is discussed along with the increased personnel problems related to these workers. Because of anti-union sentiments, the “ratebuster” can have a disruptive effect on the labor force as a whole.
The worker with strong pro- union sentiments has received very little attention in the literature. It is probable that present-day management classifies this worker as an undesirable …

A Developmental Study Of Concept Formation Behavior In Pre-School Children As Measured By The Hunter-Pascal Concept Formation Test, Bernard D. Kaiman
A Developmental Study Of Concept Formation Behavior In Pre-School Children As Measured By The Hunter-Pascal Concept Formation Test, Bernard D. Kaiman
Doctoral Dissertations
Introduction: In psychology the investigation of the formation of concepts has long been a part of the study of what has been called the thought processes. There are, however, very few studies of early concepts formation in humans, especially in children before and during the development of speech patterns. Most of the studies which have dealt with the investigation of concept formation have depended largely for their data on speech processes. It can, however, be shown that concept formation exists before speech behavior, and that its development seems to be somewhat parallel to the development of speech in the child. …

The Effect Of Varying Degrees Of Anxiety Upon Classroom Learning Performance, Martha J. Thorne
The Effect Of Varying Degrees Of Anxiety Upon Classroom Learning Performance, Martha J. Thorne
Masters Theses
Introduction: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of varying degrees of anxiety, as measured by the fifty-item forced-choice Taylor Scale of Manifest Anxiety (TMAS) (24), upon the classroom learning performance of a group of thirty-one student nurses, as measured by the increase in scores on an objective-type final examination administered at the beginning and end of a course in psychiatric nursing. The thirty-one subjects were divided into three groups on the basis of low, medium, and high anxiety scores on the TMAS. The per cent gain scores from the pre- and post-final exam were then compared …
A Further Investigation Of The Effects Of Achievement Imagery And Differential Instructions On Maze Learning Performance, Ann Hunter
Master's Theses
One of the personality variables that has been the object of considerable interest in recent years is "need achievement." This variable was first defined by Murray as the need for "success in competition with some standard of excellence." McClelland and his associates, measuring need for achievement from written responses to TAT-type pictures, have reported Significant and useful relationships between this variable and several behavioral criteria.
In order to have a more objective method of measuring need achievement, the Iowa Picture Interpretation Test (IPIY) was developed at the State University of Iowa laboratories. The IPIT obtains scores on four variables: achievement …
A Study Of The Relationship Of The Present-Day Patterns Of Family Life With The Emotional Stability Of Children, Margaret Ruth Dresslaer
A Study Of The Relationship Of The Present-Day Patterns Of Family Life With The Emotional Stability Of Children, Margaret Ruth Dresslaer
Electronic Theses & Dissertations
Problem: This is a study of the pattern of living in the present-day family and the possible effect that it may have upon the emotional stability of children. Also, the writer seeks to cite to the reader the elements that were common in the lives of "sick personalities" that she had known and the emotionally immature children under study.
Method of Research. The investigation comprised case studies of fifty pupils of the Lamar Elementary School who were grouped according to chronological age. Information for the case studies were obtained from school records, conversations and conferences with parents, and surveys within …
An Analysis Of Relationships Among Ratings On Entrance Examinations And Academic Achievement In The College Of Engineering, University Of New Mexico, Elizabeth B. Thurston
An Analysis Of Relationships Among Ratings On Entrance Examinations And Academic Achievement In The College Of Engineering, University Of New Mexico, Elizabeth B. Thurston
Psychology ETDs
The purpose of this study is two-fold:
1. To determine relationships between academic success of students in the College of Engineering, University of New Mexico, and their standing in certain entrance examinations; and
2. To recommend cutting scores on the various tests which might be set as standards for admittance to the College of Engineering.
For the purpose of this study, no correlations were drawn between scores on these entrance examinations and grade point averages for university work. The criterion for validity for these tests in this case was not grade point averages, but simply the "succeed-fail" differential. Since a …
A Comparative Study Of Personality Adjustment Of Successful And Unsuccessful Readers, Marvin F. Daley
A Comparative Study Of Personality Adjustment Of Successful And Unsuccessful Readers, Marvin F. Daley
Psychology ETDs
The reading process may be considered essentially as a "complex but unitary psychological function". As such, it involves ideational, emotional, and motor aspects as well as the adaptations of the reader to the reading experience. Undoubtedly, of all phases of the school curriculum, the varied aspects and constituents of the reading process have been the most extensively investigated. Yet, the area concerning which least is known is the personality adjustment of the reader. This limitation of research was recognized by Gann over a decade ago, and is as true today as it was then.
Development Of An Inventory Of Noncognitive Predictors Of Academic Success, Annie W. Ward
Development Of An Inventory Of Noncognitive Predictors Of Academic Success, Annie W. Ward
Doctoral Dissertations
The journals of education and psychology abound in studies of "prediction of academic success" in various courses, curricula and training programs. Since grades are readily available as a criterion and since previous grades and the scores on varied standardized tests are available as predictors, such studies are simple. The results of these studies are useful in selecting the best of available tests or the best combinations for predictive purposes, thus increasing the usefulness of the tests for group prediction. However, in spite of a number of these studies, and the refinement of statistical procedures used in conducting them, no such …
