The Relationship Between Written Knowledge Of The Alphabet And Spelling Ability At The Fourth Grade Level, Dewey A. Schluter Jr. Apr 1958

The Relationship Between Written Knowledge Of The Alphabet And Spelling Ability At The Fourth Grade Level, Dewey A. Schluter Jr.

Student Work

Profound differences in theory are never invented; they grow out of conflicting elements in a genuine problem. The problem of spelling is not new; it has existed since the first crude attempts at written communication. From the earliest symbol to the complex alphabets used in spelling today, the written word has been the method by which mankind has expressed himself and recorded his discoveries.

An Exercise On The Level Of Aspiration For The Introductory Psychology Laboratory., Susan Williams Strange Jan 1958

An Exercise On The Level Of Aspiration For The Introductory Psychology Laboratory., Susan Williams Strange

Psychology ETDs

It is customary to have a laboratory concurrent with a science course. These laboratories presumably demonstrate the laws and principles of that science. This is done in several ways: by giving the students practical first-hand knowledge of the principles, by having them observe demonstrations or participate in them, by teaching them through “audio-visual aids”, and so on. But it is because certain problems are posed by the very nature of the laboratory. For example, time limits may prevent the completion of experiments or they may be too complicated for the beginning student to undertake.

Section XXI: Meaning in the Social Sciences

Psychology is the scientific study of the behavior of organisms, particularly the processes involved in the complex organization of these organisms as individuals. The processes are studied from the analytic biochemical view (overlapping physiology) to the broad view of the effect of group activities on individual behavior (overlapping sociology). [excerpt]

Section XXI: Meaning in the Social Sciences

Vastly increased research and a sounder technique in history in the nineteenth century had two influences on the social sciences. When an enthusiasm for the records of history was combined with the evolutionary perspective, it often resulted in the search for and the imposition of patterns of development on history in general or on the history of particular subject matters such as economics, politics, morals, or religion. Social scientists looked to history for explanations, in the hope of finding inevitable laws, stages of development, or the forces that moved human society. As historians worked out a critical method for their …

Section X: The Eighteenth Century Enlightenment

Perhaps the chief achievement of the Enlightenment was the creation of the social sciences and the application of these sciences to the problems of human existence. The selections which follow offer a first-hand glimpse of the type of work that Enlightenment thinkers accomplished in the fields of psychology, economics, political science, and ethics. The selections are but fragments of thorough, systematic analyses of the foregoing subjects. However, our primary interest here is to understand some of the important assumptions and conclusions rather than to acquire a detailed knowledge of each of the sciences. The ideas presented may seem oversimplified and …

A Personality Comparison Of Students Born In The Mormon Church And Those Who Have Been Converted, Grant Broadbent Smith

Theses and Dissertations

The study of personality and its many facets is one of several significant areas in the field of psychology, which is being studied in detail. Personality, as a construct, is not often well defined and less often well understood, since it is a composite of such varied factors as perception, motivation, learning, culture and so on. Because of this present lack of clarity it must and will be discussed, written about, and experimented with until a clear, operant definition, acceptable to psychology, has been devised.

Student Work

The discovery of a proper topic for a thesis, as well as the organization of the material to be studied may be born of either a sudden insight into a problem left unsolved until now or may grow from a long familiarity with scientific facts, with the result that relationships and comparisons gradually emerge and impose themselves as a distinct object of investigation.

A Comparative Study Of The Problem Of Abstraction Versus Experience Between East And West (As Exemplified In Selected Eastern And Western Sages), Leo Jacob Zeff

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

This thesis is a comparative study of the teachings of a number of Eastern sages and a representative of modern Western depth psychology in connection with the problem of abstraction versus experience (or, thinking about instead of experiencing}. This problem is considered by the writer as the central cause in the suffering of mankind everywhere.

The introductory chapter will present the problem being investigated, why and how it is considered significant, and how it will be dealt with in this study. The second chapter will contain a presentation of the various sages to be considered here, how and why they …

In the remote past the reading of written and printed symbols had Its origin when man first began to use pictures and other characters to send messages and to record events. It occurred very slowly and took a lot of effort to change from picture writing to the use of letters In representing specific sounds.

The Egyptians as early as twenty-five centuries before Christ had analysed words and syllables into sounds and had developed a series of symbols to represent them. As a result of the ingenuity of the Semites these sounds and symbols were the beginning of the Phoenician …
