A Parallel Group Experiment In Mental Hygiene With School Children, Ernest Herman Jackson Jr. Jan 1952

A Parallel Group Experiment In Mental Hygiene With School Children, Ernest Herman Jackson Jr.

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Mr. Bullis seemed to have a direct answer to the problem that was concerning the experimenter. However, after using his book for several years and in different grade levels: sixth, seventh and eighth, it became apparent that no such single remedy would change the behavior or personality of children in a basic sense. The lessons seemed to work best for the experiment with eighth grade pupils, but still he was not confident in this own mind that they were as effective as they might be; that is, to help boys and girls get along better with one another, to understand …

A Comparison Of Scores Of Negro And White Children On The Wechsler Intelligence Scale For Children, John Robert Blakemore Jan 1952

A Comparison Of Scores Of Negro And White Children On The Wechsler Intelligence Scale For Children, John Robert Blakemore

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

This investigation concerns the intelligence of the Negro population in relation to the white population. There is a considerable difference of opinion relating to the intelligence of the Negro. Some students in the field contend that the Negro's intelligence, as measured by the tests available for all individuals, is naturally lower due to hereditary factors. Other investigators (these seem to be in the majority1 believe that environment plays the major role in lowering their ability to gain a comparable score with white individuals.

An Investigation Concerning The Incidence Of Compulsitivity Among College Students, Reid I. Martin Sep 1951

An Investigation Concerning The Incidence Of Compulsitivity Among College Students, Reid I. Martin

Psychology ETDs

It is the purpose of the study to evaluate the following hypothesis: There exists among students now in college a certain incidence of compulsitivity as indicated by an experimentally devised ratios of compulsion neurosis to hysteria*; this incidence is greater among those now in college than those not in college.

It is also a purpose of this study to contribute experimental evidence to the frequently reported observation that compulsion neurosis occurs more frequently in men than women.

*The terms "compulsion neurosis" and "hysteria" are used loosely in this thesis, not to mean neurosis per se, but neurotic trends in …

A Study Of Personality And Interest Traits Of Successful And Unsuccessful Group Work Leaders Using Six Standardized Tests, Mary E. Flannigan Aug 1951

A Study Of Personality And Interest Traits Of Successful And Unsuccessful Group Work Leaders Using Six Standardized Tests, Mary E. Flannigan

Student Work

No recreational or leisure-time program can rise above the level of its leadership. No matter how fine the objectives of the Board of Directors and the Executive, if they are not matched by competence of those who actually provide leadership, they fail.

From the standpoint of objectives and policies, nothing so directly determines the value and outcome of a Social Group Work Agency as the leaders in program activities. It is the Group Leaders, whether paid or volunteer, within an agency that reduce to a minimum the gap between the possible and actual effectiveness of the program.

An Investigation Of Certain Aspects Of Human Figure Drawings As A Measure Of Sociability Of The Person, Vincent Boone Alig Aug 1951

An Investigation Of Certain Aspects Of Human Figure Drawings As A Measure Of Sociability Of The Person, Vincent Boone Alig

Graduate Thesis Collection

For many years considerable interest has been shown in spontaneous drawing productions as related to personality study. However, little has been accomplished toward validating this measure as useful in the clinic, and even less has been done to demonstrate its usefulness with "normal" individuals. This study, therefore, is an attempt to determine whether or not certain aspects i.e., the manner in which the arms and hands are represented, in drawings of the human figure will objectively differentiate between social and non-social, "normal" individuals.

It was with his kind permission that this investigator was able to collect, analyze, and report on the resulting data.

Correlations Between The Johnson Temperament Analysis And The Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory Based Upon 100 Male Counselees, F. Alec Phillips Jul 1951

Correlations Between The Johnson Temperament Analysis And The Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory Based Upon 100 Male Counselees, F. Alec Phillips

Student Work

The field of personality is one of the most popular, challenging, important, and confused in present-day psychological studies.

During the psychology’s infancy, the study was neglected by the psychologists and left to the uncontrolled clinical methods of the psychiatrists and psychoanalysis. Finally, study in this field has been undertaken by psychologists possessing scientific method, but too often lacking the orientation to persons as such, which characterizes the clinically trained psychiatrists. It should, therefore, he no surprise to find chaotic conditions ruling the study of the psychology of personality.

An Experimental Investigation Of The Relationship Of Perceptual Speed To Motor Speed, Richard F. Wierman Jun 1951

An Experimental Investigation Of The Relationship Of Perceptual Speed To Motor Speed, Richard F. Wierman

Psychology ETDs

The main problems of this investigation were to discover;

1. What relationship, if any, exists between perceptual and motor speed and

2. Whether or not individuals who had scores on visual test which were above the mean and who had scores on motor tests below the mean present a history of fewer accidents when compared with persons whose scores on visual tests were below the mean and who were above the mean in motor test scores.

A Study Of Some Factors Affecting Parental Attitudes, Shirley Driggs Jun 1951

A Study Of Some Factors Affecting Parental Attitudes, Shirley Driggs

A Study Of Reaction To Frustration In Stutterers, Leroi Madison

Speech and Hearing Sciences ETDs

It was the purpose of this study to compare the responses of a group of stutterers on the Rosenzweig Picture-Frustration Study with the norms established for that study to determine whether, as a group, they show any significant differences in (1) the direction of aggression, and (2) the type of reaction to frustration.

Sound-Induced Seizures In Rats Reared On Diets With High Sugar Content, Lois L. Benedict May 1951

Sound-Induced Seizures In Rats Reared On Diets With High Sugar Content, Lois L. Benedict

Psychology ETDs

The present study was not designed to investigate the controversy on carbohydrate metabolism. For experimental purposes, the second possibility mentioned above was assumed to be true, i.e., that, somehow, ingested galactose might possibly be transported through the circulatory system. As long as this theory remains tenable, experimentation based upon it is necessary.

Mmpi Personality Patterns For Several Academic Major Groups, Miriam Redlo May 1951

Mmpi Personality Patterns For Several Academic Major Groups, Miriam Redlo

Psychology ETDs

The relationship between personality and vocation has raised many problems, which have not yet been adequately investigated, since this area of research is comparatively recent. Many investigators claim that there are specific occupational differences in personality in that individuals who choose particular fields of work have certain personality characteristics in common. In other words, those in a certain occupation who are successful and satisfied with the nature of their employment will show, as indicated by instruments of personality measurement, similar traits or patterns of temperament or personality which differentiate them from persons in other vocations, who are successful as well.

An Experimental Study Of The Effect Of Five Variables On The Rate Of Reversal Of Reversible Figures., Clarence Howard Amster May 1951

An Experimental Study Of The Effect Of Five Variables On The Rate Of Reversal Of Reversible Figures., Clarence Howard Amster

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Many conflicting reports have been given in the literature concerning the effect of various factors on the rate of reversal of figure and ground in reversible perspective. Flugel (7, 8) suggested that changes in eye movement increased the number of reversals. He thought that fixation on one part of the figure could lead to S’s interpretation of this part as being "nearer” the observer and that changes in perspective were induced by changing the fixation point. Donahue (5) found that there was a rhythm in the reversals but the shift in the fixation point was not in rhythm with the …

The Relative Stimulus Value Of Voices And Faces As Measured By The Method Of Recognition, William Hill Doub Apr 1951

The Relative Stimulus Value Of Voices And Faces As Measured By The Method Of Recognition, William Hill Doub

Master's Theses

When Ebbinghaus published the results of his experimental investigations of memory in 1885 his introductory chapter pointed out the "bare knowledge of the existence of memory and its effects." Historically in studies of memory our information came in large measure from the observation of the extreme and especially striking cases. The difficulties of scientific studies and the indefinite unspecialised knowledge of the nature of memory vas almost prohibitive in undertaking new investigations.

Influence Of Handedness Of The Application Of Acetylcholine And Glutamic Acid To The Motor Cortex Of The Albino Rat, Donald G. Doehring Jan 1951

Influence Of Handedness Of The Application Of Acetylcholine And Glutamic Acid To The Motor Cortex Of The Albino Rat, Donald G. Doehring

Psychology ETDs

The purpose of this study was to repeat the experimental design used in Suess' study, i.e., the attempt to influence the handedness of ambidextrous rats by application of Ach and glumatic acid to the motor cortex. This study was a slight departure from that of Suess in that more post-operational reaches were taken.
