A Technique For Inter-Translating Psychological Theories, Joseph C. Trainor
All Faculty Scholarship for the College of Education and Professional Studies
The present situ.at ion in psychology is a strange mixture of para.dox, dilemma and confusion, with many self-confident schools of thought in the field, each somewhat antagonistic to the others. The history of other sciences reveals that these are the growing pains out of which there will emerge the matured science. Meanwhile, the squabbles and the confusion are here and we must do something about them.

The Value Of Relaxation As Preparation For Rational Psychotherapy, John M. Hadley
The Value Of Relaxation As Preparation For Rational Psychotherapy, John M. Hadley
Master's Theses
The suggested uses of relaxation given by the technique of Freud coupled with the findings of Jacobson, Ferenczi and Bagchi have prompted the investigator to make some observations of the function of relaxation in rational psychotherapy. This presupposes that relaxation is used with considerable discretion. The investigation has been stimulated by a growing tendency in the Fort Hays Kansas State College Psychological Clinic to treat patients from the standpoint of the whole individual until specific traumata can be discovered In considering the value of relaxation, it may be well to think of the individual in much the same manner as …
The Relative Influence Of The Locus And Mass Of Destruction Upon The Control Of Handedness By The Cerebral Cortex, La Charles Fracarol
The Relative Influence Of The Locus And Mass Of Destruction Upon The Control Of Handedness By The Cerebral Cortex, La Charles Fracarol
Psychology ETDs
Specifically the experiment sought an answer to the following questions: (1) Is there evidence for a critical area in the cerebral cortex for the control of handedness, and if so, what are the limits of this area, i.e., what is the least destruction within this region that will produce transfers in handedness? (2) Will a destruction outside of the critical area have an effect, and if so, how large must such a destruction be to cause it? (3) What bearing will the results have upon current theories of cerebral functioning, including localization of function, physiological gradients, mass action, and equipotentiality?

Euthanasia Or Mercy Killings, George Joseph Nicoud
Euthanasia Or Mercy Killings, George Joseph Nicoud
Bachelors’ Theses
In this modern and changing world new problems are constantly arising and older ones are being dispensed with. Man has to adapt himself almost daily to changing and more complex situations. The world has advanced to such an extent that in this present generation we are known as "human machines" rather than human beings. Men are worked until they drop off from the strain or they work until they are broken, decrepit old men, no longer a use to anybody and a burden to almost everybody. As our modernity progressed, so also did conventions and ideas. Ideas of morals changed. …

A Study Of The Bell Adjustment Inventory, Nina Acona
A Study Of The Bell Adjustment Inventory, Nina Acona
Psychology ETDs
The University of New Mexico, through its personnel department, has, for three years, made use of the Bell Adjustment Inventory as an instrument for rating the personality adjustments of members of the freshman classes. The Inventory provides four measures of adjustment, and also a total score which is the sum of the scores of the four measures. The test has proved to be of value in determining cases of maladjustment and the several scores furnish a clue to the sources of such maladjustment. The results have been sufficiently satisfactory to warrant the use of the scores in comparing certain student …

Factor Analysis Versus Clinical Analysis Of Intelligence, Betty Margaret Martinson
Master's Theses
The technique of mental testing has in the period since 1905 grown to its present status as a useful tool in every psychological clinic and laboratory. A very brief discussion of its development is here included to indicate the relation of its historical antecedents to various theories of intelligence and especially the one on which the present work rests.

The Status Of Psychology In Secondary Schools Of Kansas, Roy Scott Douglass
The Status Of Psychology In Secondary Schools Of Kansas, Roy Scott Douglass
Electronic Theses & Dissertations
The writer has been teaching psychology in a small high school in Kansas. He found that the students who were taking psychology seemed to take but little interest in the subject. He became interested in knowing if this condition were true in other secondary schools in Kansas. The author was unable, after a thorough investigation, to find any account of a previous research of this nature. Out of the desire to know what was being done by the other psychology teachers this study-The Status of Psychology in Secondary Schools in Kansas-evolved.
A Sociological And Psychological Survey Of One Hundred Patients Of The Hays Crippled Children's Clinic, Helen Starbuck
A Sociological And Psychological Survey Of One Hundred Patients Of The Hays Crippled Children's Clinic, Helen Starbuck
Master's Theses
The major and minor problems of the thesis are as follows: Are the children treated at the Hays Clinic as a group mentally, temperamentally and socially normal enough to justify the state in attempting to make them physically well? What are the sociological and psychological effects of occupational therapy and school work upon patients in the clinic? In order to arrive at a solution of the foregoing problems, a study of 100 children entering the Hays Crippled Children's Clinic was made . Both laboratory and questionnaire methods were used.
The Evaluation Of Punishments And Rewards In Learning The Maze Of Humans, August Albert Lind
The Evaluation Of Punishments And Rewards In Learning The Maze Of Humans, August Albert Lind

The general problem of this investigation was the evaluation of reward and punishment for learning the maze by humans. Specifically, we wish to test Thorndike’s statement that pleasantness stamps in the right and unpleasantness stamps out the wrong; and furthermore, to find out what combination of pleasantness and unpleasantness in relation to right and wrong movements or choices is the most effective.

The Influence Of The Number Of Readings On The Rate Of Forgetting., Yuba L. Hunsley
Master's Theses
The object of the investigation was to find the relation of retention to the number of readings of factual prose articles and to the study of other factors which may influence retention. Students of the freshman and sophomore college classes were used as subjects. The experimental material consisted of reading material of highly factual articles and objective tests. Memory was measured at the end of two weeks after one, two, three, four and five readings. The other factors investigated in relation to memory ability were the effect of rereading upon retention, sex differences, and the correlation of retention of factual …
A Comparison Of Learning By Trial And Error With Learning By Observation And Insight And Its Bearing Upon The Gestalt Theory, Edna Lucile Vehlow
A Comparison Of Learning By Trial And Error With Learning By Observation And Insight And Its Bearing Upon The Gestalt Theory, Edna Lucile Vehlow
Electronic Theses & Dissertations
Some students of science are drawn to psychology because it offers an almost unlimited field for investigation and research. It has been said that psychology is individualistic and no two systems are alike. This is true only in part as there are certain principles agreed upon by the majority of psychologists, but there are also many on which leaders in this science have different opinions.
As early as 1876 Alexander Bain advanced theories regarding the method by which learning takes place. He asserted that man, in the beginning, has a proneness to make voluntary movements which are originated by stimuli, …

Origin of the Problem Many scientific investigations on various subjects taught in the elementary school have been made and consequently instruction in the schools has been greatly improved in the light of these studies. A Study Of The Psycho-Graphs Of Fifty-Five High School Students To Determine The Relationship Between Musical Talent And Various Degrees Of Intelligence, Marie H. Weatherly
Electronic Theses & Dissertations
From time immemorial music has played an important part in the life of the race; but it has been incidental rather than purposive. This incidental process meant that only those persons who had extreme talent and the inner urge became musicians. Frequently, these persons were either highly intellectual or at the other extremity of mentality, so the belief arose that musical talent was associated with great intelligence and to be a successful musician one must have wide experience, a liberal education, broad purpose and high ideals; or that a musician was among the most un-intelligent of men, sometimes near the …
