Eye Movement Desensitization And Reprocessing: A New Therapy For The Treatment Of Dissociative Identity Disorder
Intuition: The BYU Undergraduate Journal of Psychology
Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) is a new type of therapy that has been shown to be helpful in the treatment of various psychological disorders. Some of these include body dismorphic disorder, phobias, low selfesteem, and chronic phantom limb pain (Brown, McGoUrick, & Buchanan, 1997; ]onghl & Broeke, 1998; Maxwell 2003; Schneider, Hofmann, Rost, & Shapiro, 2008). In addition, because EMDR has been found to be specifically helpful in the treatment of anxiety based disorders like post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD ), it could also aid in the treatment of dissociative identity disorder (DID). EMD R may help to quickly …
The Long-Term Effects Of Short-Term Psychotherapy On Depression: A Review Of The Literature
The Long-Term Effects Of Short-Term Psychotherapy On Depression: A Review Of The Literature
Intuition: The BYU Undergraduate Journal of Psychology
As depression is one of the most prevalent challenges to mental health today, there is a need for still farther research in this subject that has already received so much attention. There is a particular need for longitudinal studies of depression to determine the efficacy of psychotherapy as treatment. Additionally, there is a promising possibility for research into brief periods of treatment. Some of the psychotherapy literature focusing on the overlap of these two fields is examined. While many studies indicate that therapy brings about a decrease in depression symptoms, which is then maintained for as long as two years, …
Flirting With Psychology: A Measure Of Flirtation
Flirting With Psychology: A Measure Of Flirtation
Intuition: The BYU Undergraduate Journal of Psychology
Flirtation is an indicator of romantic interest that is frequently researched; however, there is no current psychometrically-validated self report measure of flirtation. To meet this need, the I'm Too Flirtatious Sea (12FS), a 1O-item measure of flirtatious non-verbal behaviors, was developed using a 4-point Likert scale and administered to a convenience sample of 150 students at Brigham Young University. The 12FS had high internal consistency (a = ..82), but a relatively low content validity ratio (all items ~ .20). Principle component analysis revealed one primary factor corresponding with flirtatious nonverbal behaviors. Taken together, the 12FS provides a relatively homogeneous and …
The Restored Gospel In Psychology
The Restored Gospel In Psychology
Intuition: The BYU Undergraduate Journal of Psychology
Theism is largely absent from contemporary psychology (Slife & Whoolery, 2006). The root assumptions ,f control predictability, biological determinism, and moral relativism inherent in many dominant psychological theories (Slife & Williams, 1995) and contradict knowledge provided by the Gospel of Jesus Christ. It is impossible to fully incorporate Gospel doctrines into psychology while operating under these assumptions. Such truths cannot be added onto methods and theories that inherently oppose them. Thus, to be a theist in contemporary psychology, changes must be made at the very basic conceptions of human nature and behavior (Slife & Whoolery, 2006). Prerequisite to any psychological …

Development Of Maladaptive Academic Perfectionism Scale
Development Of Maladaptive Academic Perfectionism Scale
Intuition: The BYU Undergraduate Journal of Psychology
Academic maladaptive perfectionism, manifested through symptoms such as compulsive strivings and anxiety, is a common trait among college students. At present, no brief scales focus solely on perfectionist tendencies in the academic realm. The Maladaptive Academic Perfectionism Scale was designed to validly and reliably measure the emotional and behavioral domains of academic maladaptive perfectionism. One hundred Brigham Young University students completed the test. Results showed both the behavioral and emotional domains to be reliable, while only the emotional domain was valid. Once revised, this test could be used by college counselors to help identify maladaptive traits in the students they …
Conformity: The Effects Of Misinformation Without Direct Social Pressure
Conformity: The Effects Of Misinformation Without Direct Social Pressure
Intuition: The BYU Undergraduate Journal of Psychology
Most of the current psychological knowledge about conformity relates to direct social pressure. However, little is known about how people conform to perceived social pressure. This study examined whether individuals conform to perceived, not direct, social pressure in a naturalistic setting. We hypothesized that individuals would conform to perceived social pressure and that females would conform more than males. Participants were invited to guess the number of M&M's in a jar. An experimental group was subjected to fabricated guesses without direct social pressure to conform. Results indicate a main effect for conformity (p<0. 001) and for gender (p<0.05). Individuals, especially females, were found to conform to perceived social pressure.
Will Narcissists Distort? Personal Perceptions Of Success And Failure In Narcissistic Individuals
Will Narcissists Distort? Personal Perceptions Of Success And Failure In Narcissistic Individuals
Intuition: The BYU Undergraduate Journal of Psychology
This study examines the relationship between participants' levels of narcissism and their perceptions of success. The researchers hypothesized that more narcissistic individuals would perceive greater success on a word unscrambling test compared to less narcissistic participants. Seventy-eight BYU undergraduates completed the NPI-16 (a measure of narcissism), followed by an easy or difficult word unscrambling test, and then a demographic questionnaire. Results showed that more narcissistic participants did perceive greater personal success than less narcissistic participants, regardless of test difficulty. These findings show support far self deception as a key to grandiose narcissism. Further research could investigate whether task difficulty influences …
Love Unveiled: Teenage Love Within The Context Of Sternberg's Triangular Theory Of Love
Love Unveiled: Teenage Love Within The Context Of Sternberg's Triangular Theory Of Love
Intuition: The BYU Undergraduate Journal of Psychology
Can adolescents fall in love? Robert Sternberg's triangular theory considers three relevant aspects of a consummate loving relationship: intimacy, passion, and commitment. Adolescents seem to fulfill some forms of intimacy, easily maintain passion, and lack adult commitment. Due to their inconsistencies in fulfilling Sternberg's viewed loving components, this paper suggests that adolescents are not capable of being consummately in love.
Dress For The Job You Want: An Examination Of The Relationship Between Work Attire And Perceived Level Of Education
Intuition: The BYU Undergraduate Journal of Psychology

A Spearman correlation was used to calculate the strength of the relationship between the variables. A. significant positive correlation was …
Comparison Of Spoken And Signed Languages And Their Neural Pathways
Comparison Of Spoken And Signed Languages And Their Neural Pathways
Intuition: The BYU Undergraduate Journal of Psychology
Past literature shows that the brain regions involved in the understanding and production of verbal languages are the same brain regions that allow one to communicate in sign language. Brain lesion studies have con.finned that both spoken and signed language rely on a common system of neural and cognitive mechanisms. Further research has con.finned that by acquiring sign language skills at a young age, children have the advantage of enhanced cognitive processes pertaining to language, spatial reasoning, and attention. Future research could be conducted regarding the advantages that sign language acquired early in life could have on minimizing both the …

Rumination And Cognitive Ability In Undergraduate Females
Rumination And Cognitive Ability In Undergraduate Females
Intuition: The BYU Undergraduate Journal of Psychology
The present study investigated the hypothesis that rumination, induced through a negative-based self reflection questionnaire would hinder cognitive ability in undergraduate females, as measured by an anagram test. Sixty-eight females from Brigham Young University took an anagram test and filled out the Beck Depression Inventory, the Burns Anxiety Inventory, and Rumination Responses Scale. Thirty-seven of these participants also filled out a Rumination Induction Questionnaire (RIQ) before taking the anagram test. Manipulation checks indicated that the Rumination Induction Questionnaire was an ineffective method for inducing rumination. Results did not support the original hypothesis. Instead, results showed that those who took the …
Gender And The Appreciation Of Physically Aggressive "Slapstick" Humor
Gender And The Appreciation Of Physically Aggressive "Slapstick" Humor
Intuition: The BYU Undergraduate Journal of Psychology
This study investigated gender differences in the appreciation of slapstick humor. Participants included 28 male and 29 female undergraduates at Brigham Young University. Participants rated three humorous video clips (slapstick, wordplay, and non-sequitur) using a five question, seven point Likert-type rating scale. The results of the study supported our hypothesis that men would rate slapstick humor as funnier than women would. This suggests that gender differences in physical aggression influence perception of humor.
Leadership Skills: Developing A Measure For College Skills
Leadership Skills: Developing A Measure For College Skills
Intuition: The BYU Undergraduate Journal of Psychology
Strong leaders are in high demand in many of today's disciplines. Many characteristics and skills contribute to the emergence and success of leaders. It is important to assess these skills and characteristics in order to better fol.fill the leadership demands of employers and other organizations. The current measure aims to assess leadership abilities in college students in order to identify good leaders and the characteristics that they possess. A Likert Scale measurement was created and administered to 50 university students. Statistical analysis showed the scale to be psychometrically sound. Items correlated highly with one another and the cronbach's alpha was …

The Verbal Overshadowing Effect: Influence On Perception
The Verbal Overshadowing Effect: Influence On Perception
Intuition: The BYU Undergraduate Journal of Psychology
The current study aims to observe alterations on perception of attractiveness due to the Verbal Overshadowing Effect (VOE). University students (N=458, 178 males and 280 females) participated in a study where two faces were shown, one male and one female, for 5 seconds. The experimental group verbalized their perception of the face and then immediately rated the attractiveness of the face on a Likert scale ranging from 1-7. It is hypothesized that describing the face will influence the rating of attractiveness, and that gender will also influence perception. Statistical analysis supported the hypothesis and revealed significance in the factor of …
