Toward An Understanding Of Risk Factors For Bulimia, Ruth H. Striegel-Moore, Lisa R. Silberstein, Judith Rodin Feb 1986

Toward An Understanding Of Risk Factors For Bulimia, Ruth H. Striegel-Moore, Lisa R. Silberstein, Judith Rodin

Ruth Striegel Weissman

Explores why women in general are more prone to develop bulimia than men and which women in particular have a higher risk of becoming bulimic. Risk factors for bulimia are discussed in terms of sociocultural variables, such as the central role of beauty in the female sex-role stereotype; developmental processes; psychological variables; and biological factors, including genetic determinants of weight, the disregulation of body weight and eating through dieting, affective instability, and family variables. The sociocultural and psychological mediators that contribute to the increased risk of bulimia in this era are discussed, including a shift toward an increased emphasis on …

De La Manipulación De La Esperanza A La Gestión Del Fracaso: La Triste Historia Del Plan Techo, Fernando Carrión Mena Jan 1986

The Critical Wage, Unemployment Duration, And Wage Expectations: The Case Of Chile, A. Studenmund, Sholeh Maani Dec 1985

The Critical Wage, Unemployment Duration, And Wage Expectations: The Case Of Chile, A. Studenmund, Sholeh Maani

A. H. Studenmund

This study tests the relevance of the job search model to understanding unemployment in developing countries by utilizing a 1982 data set describing unemployed men in Chile. The findings indicate that the model is relevant to a developing country: the job seekers studied based their critical wages on their perceptions of their own productivity, economic resources, and search costs, and they reduced their wage requirements as the duration of their unemployment increased. The authors also show, in the first direct test of this question, that the critical wage and the expected wage are determined jointly and that the expected wage …

Issues As Image In Political Campaign Commercials, Robert Rudd Dec 1985

Issues As Image In Political Campaign Commercials, Robert Rudd

Robert L. Rudd

This paper examines the use of “issue” commercials as a means of developing a candidate's image in a political campaign. The study was conducted through a participant‐observation of the 1982 gubernatorial campaign of Republican Phil Batt of Idaho. During the general election campaign the Batt organization employed a series of six “issue” commercials‐television spots which addressed specific policy issues‐in an attempt to build a positive public image for the candidate in three areas: basic human and social values, personality, and leadership. The campaign also sought to erode the popular public image of the incumbent with those same issue messages. This …

Behavioral Contrast As A Function Of Component Duration And Baseline Rate Of Reinforcement, James Dougan, Frances Mcsweeney, Valeri Farmer, Jennifer Higa Dec 1985

Behavioral Contrast As A Function Of Component Duration And Baseline Rate Of Reinforcement, James Dougan, Frances Mcsweeney, Valeri Farmer, Jennifer Higa

James Dougan

Three experiments examined changes in size of multiple-schedule behavioral contrast with changes in an independent variable. Experiment 1 found that positive contrast generally increased with increases in component duration when pigeons pressed treadles. Experiments 2 and 3 found that positive and negative contrast generally increased with increases in the baseline rates of reinforcement when pigeons pecked keys. The experiments show that positive and negative contrast vary as similar functions of the same variables. Experiment 1 also suggests that these functions are different for different responses.

On The Private Provision Of Public Goods, Ted Bergstrom, Hal Varian, Larry Blume Dec 1985

On The Private Provision Of Public Goods, Ted Bergstrom, Hal Varian, Larry Blume

Ted C Bergstrom

We consider a general model of the non-cooperative provision of a public good. Under very weak assumptions there will always exist a unique Nash equilibrium in our model. A smallredistribution of wealth among the contributing consumers will not change the equilibrium amount of the public good. However, larger redistributions of wealth will change the set of contributors and thereby change the equilibrium provision of the public good. We are able to characterize the properties and the comparative statics of the equilibrium in a quite complete way and to analyze the extent to which government provision of a public good ‘crowds …

The Generalized Matching Law As A Description Of Multiple-Schedule Responding, James Dougan, Frances Mcsweeney, Valeri Farmer, J. Whipple Dec 1985

The Generalized Matching Law As A Description Of Multiple-Schedule Responding, James Dougan, Frances Mcsweeney, Valeri Farmer, J. Whipple

James Dougan

The literature was examined to determine how well the generalized matching law (Baum, 1974) describes multiple-schedule responding. In general, it describes the data well, accounting for a median of 91% of the variance. The median size of the undermatching parameter was 0.46; the median bias parameter was 1.00. The size of the undermatching parameter, and the proportion of the variance accounted for by the equation, varied inversely with the number of schedules conducted, with the number of sessions conducted per schedule, and with the time within a component. The undermatching parameter also varied with the operanda used to produce reinforcers …

Critical Theory And The Hermeneutical Circle, Kenneth Colburn Dec 1985

Critical Theory And The Hermeneutical Circle, Kenneth Colburn

Kenneth D. Colburn

This paper examines the debate between Gadamer and Habermas concerning the relationship between hermeneutics and critical theory. Formulating the hermeneutical circle in terms of relationship between understanding and interpretation, this paper examines three positions on the circle held by positivism, critical theory and hermeneutics, respectively. A commitment to method and procedure on the part of Habermas is offered as the basis for critical theory's limited acceptance of the hermeneutical circle. This is shown through an analysis of Knowledge and Human Interests as indicative of Habermas's implicit objectivism and his methodical, as opposed to hermeneutical, model of reasoning for social inquiry.

Why Are Online Catalogs Hard To Use? Lessons Learned From Information Retrieval Studies., Christine L. Borgman

Christine L. Borgman

Research in user behavior on online catalogs is in its early stages, but preliminary findings suggest that users encounter many of the same problems identified in behavioral studies of other types of bibliographic retrieval systems. Much can be learned from comparing the results of user behavior studies on these two types of systems. Research on user problems with both the mechanical aspects and the conceptual aspects of system use is reviewed, with the conclusion that more similarity exists across types of systems in conceptual than in mechanical problems. Also discussed are potential sources of the problems, due either to individual …

Simple Schedule And Signal-Key Multiple Schedule Responding And Behavioral Contrast, James Dougan, Frances K. Mcsweeney, Valerie A. Farmer Dec 1985

Simple Schedule And Signal-Key Multiple Schedule Responding And Behavioral Contrast, James Dougan, Frances K. Mcsweeney, Valerie A. Farmer

James Dougan

Pigeons' rates of responding on simple schedules appearing alone or as components of signal-key multiple schedules were not systematically different early in training, but were different later in training. This suggests that a simple schedule may be an appropriate baseline from which to measure behavioral contrast. Positive behavioral contrast, like the present differences between simple and multiple schedule responding, does not appear when naive subjects respond on signal-key multiple schedules, but does appear when experimentally experienced subjects are used.

Behavioral Contrast In Competitive And Non-Competitive Environments, James Dougan, Frances Mcsweeney, Valeri Farmer-Dougan Dec 1985

Behavioral Contrast In Competitive And Non-Competitive Environments, James Dougan, Frances Mcsweeney, Valeri Farmer-Dougan

James Dougan

Three experiments examined the effects of opportunities for an alternative response (drinking) on positive behavioral contrast of rats' food-reinforced bar pressing. In both Experiments I and 2 the baseline multiple variable-interval schedules were rich (variable interval 10-s), and contrast was examined both with and without a water bottle present. In Experiment 1, the rats were not water deprived. When one component of the multiple schedule was changed to extinction, the rate of bar pressing increased in the constant component (positive behavioral contrast). The magnitude of contrast was larger when the bottle was absent than when it was present, as predicted …

End-User Information-Seeking In The Energy Field: Implications For End-User Access To Doe Recon Databases, Christine L. Borgman, Donald O. Case Dec 1985

End-User Information-Seeking In The Energy Field: Implications For End-User Access To Doe Recon Databases, Christine L. Borgman, Donald O. Case

Christine L. Borgman

A software research and development project for the U.S. Department of Energy provided an opportunity to explore the information-seeking behavior of energy researchers. The DOE project, entitled “Online Access to Knowledge,” or “OAK,” is developing a microcomputer interface for improving end-user access to energy databases. Interviews with 18 researchers and 34 search intermediaries in energy-related fields indicate a reliance on databases as sources of information. The interview data suggest a migration of searchers toward commercial systems that offer the widest choice of database coverage. Despite previous efforts to encourage direct use of RECON databases, most energy researchers interviewed preferred that …
