David Roberts And The Mountain Of My Fear, Paul J. Rich Dec 1985

David Roberts And The Mountain Of My Fear, Paul J. Rich

Paul J. Rich

The travel writer and famous mountain climber David Roberts and I were both in the Harvard Mountaineering Club, and Dave's comments about that august if somewhat eccentric group are well worth a read. One of his titles, Mountain of My Fear, usefully describes in a phrase my own minute adventures: nobody ever held on for dear life with such passion. The secret of the famous egg nogg is reveale here for the time: 8 eggs 3 cups heavy whipping cream 2 cups whole milk 1 cup sugar 1cup brandy 1 cup dark rum 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 1 teaspoon nutmeg, …

Depressed Mood Effects On Processing Of High‑ And Low‑Content Structure Text In American And Australian College Women, Gregory J. Boyle

Gregory J. Boyle

Depressed mood at encoding and retrieval of high- (HCS) and low-content structure (LCS) text was studied in samples of American and Australian college women. Within each sample, undergraduate students were allocated to one of three subgroups: 1) an Acquisition Group - received Velten depressogenic statements before reading a passage of text. 2) a Retrieval Group - received the same treatment immediately after reading the passage, while 3) a Neutral group - received neutral statements only. Depressed mood at encoding but not at retrieval was associated with a decrement in LCS cued recall scores only, consistent with a limited-capacity model, wherein …

A Congenital Meningocoele In Prehistoric Australia, Steve Webb, Alan Thorne Nov 1985

A Congenital Meningocoele In Prehistoric Australia, Steve Webb, Alan Thorne

Steve Webb

This report concerns a congenital meningocoele in a young adult Aboriginal female from north-western New South Wales, Australia. The fact that this individual reached adulthood throws new light on the attitude of these nomadic people towards such conditions. Evidence of this kind may prompt also a re-evaluation by prehistorians and anthropologists of the popularly held belief that all such malformations were automatically eliminated by infanticide. The discovery of this form of pathology helps provide new information not only on past cultural attitudes towards disease, but its frequency and geographical incidence, and adds to our knowledge concerning the range of pathological …

Social Facilitation Of Young Children's Dynamic Balance Performance.Pdf, Mary Jo Maccracken, Robert E. Stadulis May 1985

Social Facilitation Of Young Children's Dynamic Balance Performance.Pdf, Mary Jo Maccracken, Robert E. Stadulis

Dr. Mary J. MacCracken

Dynamic balance performance of young children (ages 4, 6, and 8) was assessed in
three social situations: alone (only with tester present); coaction (one other child performing
at the same time); and spectators (five other observer children present). Within each age
and gender, children (N = 120) were classified as of higher or lower comparative skill.
Each balance task performed (walking forward and backward on a line, a narrow beam
or a wide beam) was classified as representing easier or more difficult tasks for each
child individually. Findings (p < .05) indicated that the facilitation effects of social
situations strengthened …

Public Opinion And Political Change In Poland, 1980-1982, David Mason Dec 1984

Public Opinion And Political Change In Poland, 1980-1982, David Mason

David S. Mason

This book deals with the importance of public opinion in Poland at the time of the rise of Solidarity and the workers' movement, when opinion polling and freedom of political debate were at their height. Dr Mason's analysis is based on the most open and revealing opinion polls ever to issue from a communist country, polls conducted by the government, the universities and Solidarity itself on fundamental political issues - the nature of the socialist state, the role of the party, popular confidence in Solidarity, the church and the regime. The lack of information about public attitudes is perhaps the …
