Hospital Libraries: A Path Forward, Basia Delawska-Elliott, Wm. Brian Elliott

Basia Delawska-Elliott, MLIS, AHIP

Program Description: Despite our profession’s constant evolution to address the changing needs of our users, many health sciences libraries, particularly hospital libraries, are under scrutiny by their institutions. Many of these libraries are facing closure. In fact, a recent study of health sciences library closings [Schwartz, Elkin 2017] found that from 1989-2006 approximately 23-34% of US health sciences libraries closed. Furthermore, between 2011 and 2015, 613 libraries closed, for an average of 115 closings per year [Thibodeau, Funk 2009]. But why? What was the rationale for these closings? Was the decision based solely on economic reasons, or were there other underlying …

Information Literacy Outreach In A Fake News World, Debbie Morrow May 2018

Information Literacy Outreach In A Fake News World, Debbie Morrow

Debbie Morrow

Untrue and non-factual information is nothing new. Human communication is complex and nuanced, and throughout human history the communication of facts, opinions, feelings, learning and lore has included the potential for misinformation and disinformation as well as objective report and empirical truth. In our present environment, from the personal and local to the societal and global, we are grappling with the intensifying effects of the Internet and social media in altering how we know, what we think we know, and how we talk about what we know or believe. The popular shorthand today for what a person finds unbelievable or …

Information Literacy Outreach In A Fake News World, Debbie Morrow

Debbie Morrow

In a “post-truth” society how do we sustain an informed citizenry, the underpinning of our democracy? What news is “fake” and which facts are “alternative”?  Crucially, how do we educate students to evaluate the information they encounter in a variety of contexts and disciplines? How can librarians take the lead in teaching that "authority is constructed and contextual"? This session offers some ideas culled from outreach and contact opportunities around campus during the last year [2017].

Young People’S Views Of Government, Peaceful Coexistence, And Diversity In Five Latin American Countries: Iea International Civic And Citizenship Education Study 2016 Latin American Report, Wolfram Schulz, John Ainley, Cristián Cox, Tim Friedman

Dr Wolfram Schulz

ICCS 2016 was the second cycle of the IEA Civic and Citizenship Education Study (ICCS). ICCS studies the ways in which education systems from around the world prepare young people to undertake their roles as citizens in society. In Latin America, this area of learning is set within particular challenges and contexts. Compared to established Western democracies, most countries in this region returned to democratic rule only three or four decades ago or even more recently, and their political, social, and economic stability continues to be called into question. Surveys have consistently found that commitment to democracy among adults in …

Two Pioneers In Advertising Photography: Oliviero Toscani And David La Chapelle, Antonio Scontrino

Antonio Scontrino

In advertising photography’s crowded and competitive world, creativity and originality of style are key distinguishers. Some photographers challenge conventions to assert their innovative ideas. Dealing with extremely delicate social issues and effectively using them is a rare and difficult task in this field. In this regard Oliviero Toscani and David LaChapelle mark an era in advertising photography. These artists have started a new phase in fashion photography by inventing a revolutionary approach to business, communication, and public relations. Although both photographers worked with similar content, they applied different techniques and styles, and their work significantly differs in in terms of implementation and …

63. Children’S Conversational Memory Regarding A Minor Transgression And A Subsequent Interview., Stacia N. Stolzenberg, Kelly Mcwilliams, Thomas D. Lyon

Thomas D. Lyon

Children’s memories for their conversations are commonly explored in child abuse cases. In two studies, we examined conversational recall in 154 4- to 9-year-old children’s reports of an interaction with a stranger, some of whom were complicit in a transgression and were admonished to keep it a secret. Immediately afterwards, all children were interviewed about their interaction. One week later, children were asked recall questions about their interaction with the stranger, their conversations with the stranger, and their conversations with the interviewer. Overall, interaction recall questions elicited few details about children’s conversations, whereas conversation recall questions were effective in doing …

Space Security And Gender: Incorporating The Gender Perspective Into Decision-Making Processes, Sara Langston May 2018

Space Security And Gender: Incorporating The Gender Perspective Into Decision-Making Processes, Sara Langston

Sara Langston

"Dr Sara Langston discussed the importance of including the gender perspective in decision-making processes for space activities. This included all areas, such as government and civil, peaceful and security related. She stated that values impacted the way people pursued their goals, and more role models were therefore needed in space activities. Women, in particular, offered forward thinking on numerous fronts, introducing a distinct form of problem analysis from that of men. While great minds often think alike, they also think differently. The gender perspective was about introducing a different way of thinking to long-standing debates. Ms Langston outlined four ways …

Integration Of Behavioral Health For The Treatment Of Depression In Primary Care: A Practice Improvement Project, Diane Block, Eileen Stuart-Shor, Jeanne Marston, Sarah Ludlow May 2018

Integration Of Behavioral Health For The Treatment Of Depression In Primary Care: A Practice Improvement Project, Diane Block, Eileen Stuart-Shor, Jeanne Marston, Sarah Ludlow

Diane Block

Background: Mental health is a compilation of conditions frequently managed in primary care. Approximately 8 million people in the United States are diagnosed with depression annually1. Over half of these patients are managed in primary care without intervention by behavioral health1. The recurrence of depression in patients and the volume at which this problem is being treated brings to question whether depression and mental illness should be treated with specialized care in the same collaborative manner as other health conditions.
Methods:  Methods involve close monitoring of both PHQ-2 and PHQ-9 scoring, random chart audits and both survey and interview …

Youth Program Evaluation: Furthering Youth Participation In Evaluation Systems, Ariel Vaughan May 2018

Youth Program Evaluation: Furthering Youth Participation In Evaluation Systems, Ariel Vaughan

Ariel Vaughan

Young people, particularly low income youth of color, have historically been perceived as ‘problems’ in society, but new models of youth development have begun to shift the narrative surrounding young people. In order to demonstrate outcomes and causation between youth programming and positive outcomes, programs must incorporate systems of evaluation. By involving youth in the evaluation process, programs are able to provide further opportunities for youth to take ownership over programming and the narrative society associates with youth. The author will be using the YouthGROW program of the Regional Environmental Council as a case study.

On Trac To Success: Creating A Multi-Institution, Statewide Fulfillment Network, R. Todd Vandenbark, Brian Thompson, Dawn Mick, Greg Davis, Andrew J. Welch

Dawn Mick

In 2015, ten Iowa and Nebraska academic library systems prepared to migrate to Alma and Primo. Simultaneous adoption of a common ILS was unprecedented in Iowa, and we knew this was an opportunity to forge stronger connections between our libraries, collections, and institutions. Representatives from each library began meeting to discuss shared goals and objectives, and they formed TRAC: the Two Rivers Alma Collaborative.
Four TRAC libraries already belonged to a small regional consortium, but the rest did not. Our parallel migration timelines provided a chance to leverage our common--if not shared--library platform. Discussions ranged from sharing a Primo environment …

How To Help When It Hurts? Think Systemic, Corey L. Wrenn May 2018

How To Help When It Hurts? Think Systemic, Corey L. Wrenn

Corey Lee Wrenn, PhD

To resolve a moral dilemma created by the rescue of carnivorous species from exploitative situations who must rely on the flesh of other vulnerable species to survive, Cheryl Abbate applies the guardianship principle in proposing hunting as a case-by-case means of reducing harm to the rescued animal as well as to those animals who must die to supply food. This article counters that Abbate’s guardianship principle is insufficiently applied given its objectification of deer communities. Tom Regan, alternatively, encouraged guardians to think beyond individual dilemmas and adopt a measure of systemic reconstruction, that being the abolition of speciesist institutions (The …

Indefinite Detention, Colonialism, And Settler Prerogative In The United States, Natsu Taylor Saito May 2018

Indefinite Detention, Colonialism, And Settler Prerogative In The United States, Natsu Taylor Saito

Natsu Taylor Saito

The primacy accorded individual civil and political rights is often touted as one of the United States' greatest achievements. However, mass incarcerations of indefinite duration have occurred consistently throughout U.S. history and have primarily targeted people of color. The dominant narrative insists that the United States is a political democracy and portrays each instance of indefinite detention in exceptionalist terms. This essay argues that the historical patterns of indefinite detention are better explained by recognizing the United States as a settler colonial state whose claimed prerogative to expand its territorial reach and contain/control populations over which it exercises jurisdiction inevitably …

Uav Sensor Operator Training Enhancement Through Heat Map Analysis, Ashish Amresh, John Femiani, Jason Fairfield, Adam Fairfield

Ashish Amresh

Heat map based data visualization and mining is an emerging area in game engine design and architecture. Employed by many state of the art game engines and popular commercial games, this technology helps populate and collate player activity and behavior to better inform the system for further action. Simulation and serious games can tremendously benefit by applying heat map based visualization for the purposes of analyzing and tracking player behavior. Heat maps are time varying texture maps that represent a chosen activity over a certain grid at any particular interval of elapsed time. In this paper results of applying a …
