Quality-Adjusted Human Capital And Productivity Growth, James B. Ang Jan 2014

Quality-Adjusted Human Capital And Productivity Growth, James B. Ang

James B Ang

This article examines the influence of quality‐adjusted educational attainment on growth and tests whether it facilitates the transfer of technology developed at the frontier for a panel of 60 countries. Using outcomes of pathogen stress as instruments, the results show that quality‐adjusted educational attainment and its interaction with distance to the frontier play important roles for growth.

Financial Development And Barriers To The Cross-Border Diffusion Of Financial Innovation, James B. Ang Jan 2014

Financial Development And Barriers To The Cross-Border Diffusion Of Financial Innovation, James B. Ang

James B Ang

This paper explores the determinants of financial development by focusing on the role played by barriers to the diffusion of financial technology. These barriers are measured using human genetic distance from the technology frontier. The results based on cross-sectional data for 123 countries suggest that genetic distance to the global frontier has an economically and statistically significant effect on financial development, in that countries that are genetically far from the technology leader tend to have lower levels of financial development. Genetic distance is found to have the largest effect, even after controlling for other determinants of financial development established in …

Export Performance On The Asian Miracle Economies:The Role Of Innovation And Product Variety, James B. Ang Jan 2014

Export Performance On The Asian Miracle Economies:The Role Of Innovation And Product Variety, James B. Ang

James B Ang

Traditional export models fall short of explaining the marked increase in exports of the Asian miracle economies in the post-WWII period. A model showing that exports are driven by innovations, innovative competitiveness, demand, and price competitiveness is estimated for China, India, Korea, Japan, Singapore and Taiwan over the period 1953-2010. The results demonstrate that innovation stocks and competitiveness are important determinants behind their success. Furthermore, innovation stocks and innovative competitiveness are shown to be less influential for export growth in China and India and their export booms have been fueled by process rather than product innovation.

Innovation And Financial Liberalization, James B. Ang Jan 2014

Innovation And Financial Liberalization, James B. Ang

James B Ang

This paper attempts to shed some light on the role of financial sector policies in generating new knowledge, drawing on the experience of one of the fastest growing and largest developing countries. Using time series data for India over the period 1963–2005, the results indicate that interest rate restraints help generate ideas. Other financial repressionist policies, in the form of high reserve and liquidity requirements, as well as significant directed credit controls, appear to have a dampening effect on ideas production. These results lend some support to the argument that some form of financial sector reforms may help stimulate economic …

El Surgimiento Del Paisaje Monumentalizado En La Cuenca Del Lago Titicaca, Luis A. Flores Jan 2014

El Surgimiento Del Paisaje Monumentalizado En La Cuenca Del Lago Titicaca, Luis A. Flores

Luis FLORES

The present paper proposes a new interpretation on the origin of the monumentalized landscape in the Titicaca lake area (South-Central Andes), whose consequences were the emergence of barrow structures at the transition from the Formative to the Archaic periods. Such process could be detected through the analysis of the last complex hunter-gatherers’ houses, where domestic and funerary practices coexisted. Both of them allowed the houses to be seen at objects and subjects at the same time within a cyclical system of existence. In that way monumentality is understood as conveying a form of thinking, whose origins are in the domestic …

The Social And Political Construction Of Public Policy Problems, Robert Hoppe Jan 2014

The Social And Political Construction Of Public Policy Problems, Robert Hoppe

Robert Hoppe

This article - taken from my The Governance of Problems, 2011, pp.66-76 - develops the fourfold problem typology which is at the heart of my book. Along two axes - degree of certainty about available and relevant knowledge, and degree of ambiguity about normative claims - it sets out four types of problems: structured, unstructured, and two types of moderately structured problems. It demonstrates how these different problem types effectively structure the task environment for policy analysts and policy workers differently.

Compound Interest And The Power Of Saving, Richard H. Serlin Jan 2014

Compound Interest And The Power Of Saving, Richard H. Serlin

Richard H. Serlin

This is an article with an included assignment that I give to my personal finance 1 students. The first part talks about the power of compound interest. I go into depth about the intuition why it's so powerful, why it takes off, and has been called the eighth wonder of the world. I've haven't seen anywhere else an extensive explanation of the intuition like I have here.

In the second part I give the students a nice assignment to see how much their savings can grow if they invest even a modest amount consistently, month in and month out, in …

Timing Is Everything? An Empirical Analysis Of The Determinants Of Service Quality Provision, Olivier Chatain, Alon Eizenberg Jan 2014

Timing Is Everything? An Empirical Analysis Of The Determinants Of Service Quality Provision, Olivier Chatain, Alon Eizenberg

Olivier Chatain

We utilize a unique database from a large legal services provider to examine how service quality responds to the firm's available capacity, and to the nature of the firm-client relationship. We develop empirical measures of both the (internal) level of resources available to the firm at different points in time, and of the (external) value creation for customers. Our results indicate that service quality increases in the amount of the firm's available resources, suggesting that quality adjustment can be used as a means of tackling capacity constraints. We also find that service quality increases in the number of previous successful …

Beyond Black And White: How White, Male, College Students See Their Asian American Peers, Nolan L. Cabrera Jan 2014

Beyond Black And White: How White, Male, College Students See Their Asian American Peers, Nolan L. Cabrera

Nolan L. Cabrera

This research is a cross-site analysis of how white, male, college students see their Asian American peers. Semi-structured interviews with 43 white males were conducted at two universities that differed substantially in their representation of Asian American students. The interviews were theoretically framed by Critical Whiteness Studies and Bobo and Tuan’s conception of prejudice as group positioning. At the institution where Asian American population was higher (almost 1/3 of the undergraduate population), the participants described Asian Americans as not true minorities and blamed them for campus segregation, while also subscribing to many racial stereotypes about Asian Americans (e.g., being bad …
