Using Rubrics For Information Literacy Skill Assessment: A Case Study For Business Education, Bobbi Makani, Ann Agee, Marilyn Easter, Yuhfen Diana H. Wu
Diana H. Wu
Information literacy—the ability to find, evaluate and use information effectively—is an essential skill set. The authors examine how assignments such as case analyses and research reports help business students master these abilities and provide examples of how analytic rubrics with measurable outcomes are particularly suited to assessing these skills. Also demonstrated is how librarians enhance and support student learning of information literacy by teaching in-depth research skills. Working together, professors and librarians can give students a solid foundation in the information-handling skills they need to be effective and productive in the workplace today.

Effects Of Different Tillage Operations On Rice Yield At Yandev, Central Nigeria, Fanan Ujoh Ph.D, Frederick Terkuma Ujoh Mr
Dr. Fanan Ujoh
The aim of the study is to ascertain the extent to which tillage methods and practices can determine Rice yield in a part of Nigeria. The study design is experimental with 3 tillage practices using 2 fertiliser application regimes, at an agricultural experimental land at Akperan Orshi College of Agriculture, Yandev (AOCAY), Nigeria, between July and November 2007. The study adopts an experimental layout of plots measuring 80m x 62.5m: the width was divided into three equal widths of 26m each and had an alley of 1m apart. The length which was measured to be 62.5m was divided into two …

Promoting Social Change Through Service-Learning In The Curriculum, Glenn A. Bowen Phd
Glenn A Bowen PhD
Service-learning is a high-impact pedagogical strategy embraced by higher education institutions. Direct service based on a charity paradigm tends to be the norm, while little attention is paid to social change-oriented service. This article offers suggestions for incorporating social justice education into courses designed to promote social change through service-learning. The article delineates the characteristics of social justice education, discusses ways to incorporate social justice and service-learning components into appropriate courses, and provides a blueprint for constructing the syllabus.

Trumping Communitarianism: Crime Control And Forensic Dna Typing And Databasing In Singapore, Victor Toom
Trumping Communitarianism: Crime Control And Forensic Dna Typing And Databasing In Singapore, Victor Toom
victor toom
Liberalism and communitarianism have figured prominently in discussions of how to govern forensic DNA practices (forensic DNA typing and databasing). Despite the prominence of these two political philosophies and their underlying values, no studies have looked at the governance of forensic DNA practices in a nondemocratic country governed by a communitarian logic. To fill this lacuna in the literature, this article considers Singapore as an authoritarian state governed by a communitarian philosophy. The article highlights basic innovations and technologies of forensic DNA practices and articulates a liberal democratic version of “biolegality” as described by Michael Lynch and Ruth McNally. It …

Hidden In Full Sight: Kinship, Science And The Law In The Aftermath Of The Srebrenica Genocide, Erica Haimes, Victor Toom

Terms such as “relationship testing,” “familial searching” and “kinship analysis” figure prominently in professional practices of disaster victim identification (DVI). However, despite the dependence of those identification technologies on DNA samples from people who might be related to the dead and despite also the prominence of the notion of “relatedness” as a device for identifying the dead, the concepts of “relatedness” and “kinship” remain elusive both in practice and in analyses of the social and ethical aspects of DVI by DNA; they are hidden in full sight. In this article, we wish to bring kinship more to the fore. We …
Search Engines And Data Retention: Implications For Privacy And Antitrust, Lesley Chiou, Catherine Tucker
Search Engines And Data Retention: Implications For Privacy And Antitrust, Lesley Chiou, Catherine Tucker

This paper investigates whether larger quantities of historical data confer a competitive advantage to firms that offer Internet search. We study how the length of time that search engines retained their server logs affected the apparent accuracy of subsequent searches. Our analysis exploits changes in these policies prompted by the actions of the European Commission. We find little empirical evidence that reducing the length of storage of past search engine searches affected the accuracy of search. Our results suggest that the possession of historical data confers less of a competitive advantage than is sometimes supposed. Our results also suggest that …

Use of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) has increased globally, particularly among oncology patients. This study investigated the knowledge, experience and attitudes of oncology nurses towards CAM. A quantitative study was conducted in tertiary care hospitals in Karachi, Pakistan, where 132 oncology nurses were surveyed. The survey revealed that more than 50% of nurses had never heard about many of the CAM therapies used in Pakistan. Approximately 65% of the nurses had knowledge about prayer and less than 30% had experience of CAM education or training. In addition, the majority of nurses had seen patients using CAM and felt that …

The Greek Debt Crisis And Southern Europe: Majoritarian Pitfalls?, Iosif Kovras, Neophytos Loizides

Although widely debated in broader socioeconomic terms, the Eurozone crisis has not received adequate scholarly attention with regards to the impact of alternative political systems. This article revisits the debate on majoritarian and consensus democracies drawing on recent evidence from the Eurozone debacle. Greece is particularly interesting both with regards to its potential ‘global spillover effects’ and choice of political system. Despite facing comparable challenges as Portugal and Spain, the country has become polarized socially and politically, seeing a record number of MP defections, electoral volatility and the rise of the militant extreme right. The article explains why Greece, the …

Policy Briefing: Addressing Migrant Bodies On Europe’S Southern Frontier. An Agenda For Research And Practice, Simon Robins, Iosif Kovras, Anna Vallianatou

In recent years thousands of undocumented migrants have died in shipwrecks at the coasts of Greece, Spain and Italy in their effort to enter the EU. This brief draws on field research on the Greek island of Lesbos, one of the key entry points of migrants to the EU that has seen repeated incidents of deadly shipwrecks. The note underlines the gaps and flaws in the policies pursued by local, national and EU authorities. Research shows that although several local agencies engage with the problem, none assumes responsibility. It reveals the absence of any provision for identification of victims or …
The Exporter Productivity Premium Along The Productivity Distribution: Evidence From Quantile Regression With Nonadditive Firm Fixed Effects, David Powell, Joachim Wagner
The Exporter Productivity Premium Along The Productivity Distribution: Evidence From Quantile Regression With Nonadditive Firm Fixed Effects, David Powell, Joachim Wagner
David Powell
A vast literature on the international activities of heterogeneous firms finds the existence of a positive exporter productivity premium. On average, exporting firms are more productive than firms that sell on the national market only. The Melitz (2003) model, however, has implications for not only mean differences but also differences in the distribution of productivity. Furthermore, exporting firms may be different from non-exporting firms for reasons that are not included in the Melitz model. We believe that conditioning on firm fixed effects and studying the distribution of productivity are both necessary for empirical tests of the Melitz model. This paper …

In today’s technology-intensive research environments, petabytes of data may be produced in a matter of days, weeks, or months. Those data may be lost in a similar amount of time if they are not captured, curated, and marked up in ways that allow for discovery and reuse by others. Datasets large and small can be very useful not only to researchers, but also to students, to the general public, and to policy makers. Among the classes of data of broad general interest are scientific records of the climate, the skies and galaxies, plant and animal species, social and economic observations, …

Word counts for each of the eighty-five articles published by Publius, the (collective) pseudonym of John Jay, Alexander Hamilton and James Madison, are surveyed. The 189,497 words are also broken down by author. The effort is ancillary to a project fixing the semantic values of ‘constitution’, ‘federal’ and ‘republic’ throughout the Early Republic (=1787 through 1857).

Help From Above: The Role Of International Law In Facilitating The Use Of Outer Space For Disaster Management, Brian R. Israel
Help From Above: The Role Of International Law In Facilitating The Use Of Outer Space For Disaster Management, Brian R. Israel
Brian R Israel
This chapter explores the role of international law as well as non-legal mechanisms in enabling the use of outer space for valuable new disaster management applications. This overall challenge is addressed in three phases, ranging from the collective action problems arising from the use of space in general, to sovereignty-based objections to observing the Earth from space, to the complex coordination challenges of harnessing existing space systems for disaster applications. One mechanism in particular, the legally non-binding International Charter for Space and Major Disasters, serves as a remarkable case study in international cooperation because of the speed with which it …

Modele Biznesowe A Kapitał Intelektualny Przedsiębiorstwa, Anna Ujwary-Gil
Modele Biznesowe A Kapitał Intelektualny Przedsiębiorstwa, Anna Ujwary-Gil
Anna Ujwary-Gil
Integrative And Divisive Roles Of Political Parties: Party Attachment, Ideology And Satisfaction With Democracy In The Netherlands, Bojan Todosijević
Integrative And Divisive Roles Of Political Parties: Party Attachment, Ideology And Satisfaction With Democracy In The Netherlands, Bojan Todosijević
Bojan Todosijević
Political parties can be seen as agents of both integration and division. Attachment to political parties may function as an integrating mechanism by channeling political and ideological polarization away from system-challenging activities towards the regime support and acceptance of the prevailing political (democratic) order. At the same time, parties might also foster extremism and dissatisfaction with democratic performance. This paper examines these possibilities using Dutch Election Studies data. The empirical examination of the relationships between the triangle of ideological extremism, partisanship, and satisfaction with democracy provides mixed support for both interpretations, and emphasizes the double role of partisanship.

Global Production, Circulation, And Consumption Of Gangnam Style, Sookeung Jung, Hongmei Li
Hongmei Li
This essay examines the cultural production, circulation, and consumption of the Korean music video Gangnam Style in the broader context of globalization. We conduct a chronological analysis of its distribution, production, and reproduction on YouTube, focusing on the interactions between traditional and new players in reinforcing and creating new meanings. We argue that the phenomenal success of Gangnam Style is due to the dynamic interplay of traditional and new media outlets, the active participation of global audiences, the video’s spreadable hooks, a laissez-faire copyright policy, and the musician PSY’s marketing strategies.
Correctional Officer Excessive Use Of Force: Civil Liability Under Section 1983, Howard M. Henderson
Correctional Officer Excessive Use Of Force: Civil Liability Under Section 1983, Howard M. Henderson
Howard M Henderson
Despite recent research demonstrating the impact of inmate perceptions of correctional legitimacy on order maintenance, the extant literature has failed to examine the contextual reality of correctional excessive use of force claims. Utilizing legal cases from the U.S. Court of Appeals and U.S. District Courts, this article examines correctional officer excessive use of non-deadly force and identifies recurring themes in these claims. Findings highlight the common occurrence of retaliatory violence, negative attitudes, failure to listen to inmate concerns, inadequate training, and an inability to decipher reliable threat cues consistently present in correctional officer use of non-deadly force claims. Suggestions for …
The Criminological Cultivation Of African American Municipal Police Officers: Sambo Or Sellout, Howard M. Henderson
The Criminological Cultivation Of African American Municipal Police Officers: Sambo Or Sellout, Howard M. Henderson
Howard M Henderson
African American municipal police officers have been historically underrepresented and often face a double marginalization, arguably due to fellow officer and public perceptions. This study represents a first-step criminological cultivation analysis of the quantity and quality of African American municipal police officer depictions in the core cop film genre (1971–2011). Utilizing the unified film population identification methodology, 112 films were identified and examined to determine the overarching messages conveyed through the genre. Findings revealed that White officers were depicted in the lead or joint leading role in 89% (n ¼ 100) and African Americans in 19% (n ¼ 21) of …
The Construction Of Morals, Daniel L. Chen, Susan Yeh
The Construction Of Morals, Daniel L. Chen, Susan Yeh
Susan Yeh
When do policies generate expressive or backlash effects? Recent economic models suggest that where a proscribed activity is prevalent, permissive laws liberalize attitudes toward partakers while increasing utility. The opposite occurs in communities where the proscribed activity is rare. To test these predictions, we randomize data entry workers to transcribe newspaper summaries of liberal or conservative court decisions about obscenity. We find that liberal obscenity decisions liberalize individual and perceived community standards and increase utility. Yet religious workers become more conservative in their values, identify as more Republican, view community standards as becoming more liberal, and report lower utility. Workers …
Network Formation And Financial Fragility, Danilo Lopomo Beteto Wegner
Network Formation And Financial Fragility, Danilo Lopomo Beteto Wegner
Danilo Lopomo Beteto Wegner
A tractable model of the formation of financial networks is developed, allowing the use of concepts from portfolio theory. The optimal financial network maximizes a Sharpe ratio defined for financial networks, whereas the equilibrium financial network emerges from banks bargaining over future proceeds of co-investment opportunities. Measures of financial fragility, systemic risk and robustness are developed. The equilibrium financial network is shown to be the most connected and with the lowest level of financial fragility, whereas the optimal is the one least connected and with lowest exposure to systemic risk, being also the most robust financial network.
A Reinterpretation Of The Gordon And Barro Model In Terms Of Financial Stability, Danilo Lopomo Beteto Wegner
A Reinterpretation Of The Gordon And Barro Model In Terms Of Financial Stability, Danilo Lopomo Beteto Wegner
Danilo Lopomo Beteto Wegner
A government bailout model based on the framework of time-consistent monetary policy of Barro and Gordon (83) is developed. In the model, the banking sector and the government play a game where the former chooses a bailout expectation whereas the later reacts by choosing its optimal bailout policy. The banking sector is assumed to be perfectly competitive, aiming only at anticipating the bailout policy. An excess of credit ensues and firms over-invest, which can be amended by an appropriately chosen reserve requirement. The government faces a trade-off between efficiency and stability in trying to minimize the costs of intervention.
