Ecological Distribution Of Breeding Waterfowl Populations In North Dakota, Robert E. Stewart, Harold A. Kantrud Jan 1973

Ecological Distribution Of Breeding Waterfowl Populations In North Dakota, Robert E. Stewart, Harold A. Kantrud

United States Geological Survey, Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center: Publications

The distribution of breeding waterfowl populations on various wetland habitat types was investigated in North Dakota during 1967-69. Data were obtained by stratified random sampling techniques. The total wetland acreage in North Dakota was estimated to be about 3.2 million acres. Natural basin wetlands comprised about 77 percent of the acreage and 91 percent of the number of wetlands in the state and were utilized by about 76 percent of the state's breeding duck population. Among the four biotic regions of the state, numerical and areal composition of wetlands varied considerably. Natural basin wetlands varied from a low of about …

Racial Composition Of Migrant Populations Of Sandhill Cranes In The Northern Plains States, Douglas H. Johnson, Robert E. Stewart Jan 1973

Racial Composition Of Migrant Populations Of Sandhill Cranes In The Northern Plains States, Douglas H. Johnson, Robert E. Stewart

United States Geological Survey, Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center: Publications

During recent years, there has been increasing pressure to expand hunting seasons on Sandhill Cranes (Grus canadensis) in the northern plains states. Hunters desire to take advantage of the opportunity presented by the sizable flocks of this large bird in this area. Prior to passage of the Migratory Bird Treaty Act in 1918, the Sandhill Crane was hunted and considered to have high sporting and eating qualities. In addition, complaints have been received from farmers regarding grain crop depredations by cranes. It has been suggested (Boeker et al., 1961:16) that flocks of cranes would be more widely dispersed …

Ritual Appraisement In White Singles’ Bars: From A Woman’S Perspective, Mary Jo Deegan Jan 1973

Ritual Appraisement In White Singles’ Bars: From A Woman’S Perspective, Mary Jo Deegan

Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications

Singles bars provide a unique opportunity to observe sexual norms and mores in action. This set of expectations is particularly visible in these spots because they accentuate the mobility and "meat market" aspects of selection of dating partners. The meat market bargaining process is an important part of this ritual introduction, and it is a major organizing concept in the analysis.

Review Of Spatial Organization: The Geographer's View Of The World By Ronald Abler, John S. Adams, And Peter Gould, S. M. Bhardwaj, Robert Stoddard May 1972

Review Of Spatial Organization: The Geographer's View Of The World By Ronald Abler, John S. Adams, And Peter Gould, S. M. Bhardwaj, Robert Stoddard

Department of Geography: Faculty Publications

Most introductory textbooks in geography are content-oriented, some pay lip service to basic concepts in geography, and still others are like tombstones conveying concepts and content of a bygone era. Abler, Adams and Gould have presented an introductory text that is rich in concepts, is rooted in contemporary scientific thinking, and conveys a dynamic, futuristic view of geography. The basic thrust in the book is "the circularly causal relationships between spatial structure and spatial processes." Geographers with a "lands-and-peoples" view of geography will be disappointed.

This report concerns Malone, a problem area of Lincoln, Nebraska, that is undergoing considerable change as a result of external influences from the city and the university. In 1971, a graduate Seminar in Urban Geography devoted a semester to the spatial aspects of blight In cities and as a part of this course prepared short reports on specific aspects of Lincoln's example of a blighted zone. The point of departure for the field work was the conceptual framework of the transition zone as it was developed by Burgess in the 1920's and refined by others at a later time, especially …

Population Estimates Of Breeding Birds In North Dakota, Robert E. Stewart, Harold A. Kantrud Jan 1972

Population Estimates Of Breeding Birds In North Dakota, Robert E. Stewart, Harold A. Kantrud

United States Geological Survey, Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center: Publications

Reasonably accurate measurements of breeding bird populations on large land areas are needed if the overall effects of man's impact on the environment are to be measured and understood. Through use of these data, we will be able to detect the average response of these populations to generalized environmental changes caused by diverse and widespread land-use practices. As this kind of information becomes available, it will serve as the basis for developing appropriate management programs for the purpose of maintaining or increasing breeding bird populations.

This thesis will be a study in microcosm of Melvin R. Gilmore’s Nebraska research. The study analyzes his ethnobiological field work and writings in terms of biographic factors.Gilmore’s ethnobiological research manifests both bioecological and cultural ecological rationales. The thesis shows that Gilmore’s pioneering work in ethnobiology, together with studies by Harrington and others, laid the groundwork for modern cultural ecology as practiced by Julian Steward and others. The author of the thesis used original documents from the Nebraska State Historical Society in his research.

While in Nebraska Gilmore developed an interest in ethnobiology. His initial ethnobotanical field work was related …

Two Keynesian Models Of Simultaneous Inflation And Unemployment: Comment, Craig Macphee Jan 1971

Two Keynesian Models Of Simultaneous Inflation And Unemployment: Comment, Craig Macphee

Department of Economics: Faculty Publications

In his article J. Kirker Stephens demonstrates the possibility of simultaneous inflation and unemployment in a simple Keynesian model by relaxing the assumption of labor hornogeneity. As he correctly points out, most graphical and algebraic presentations of Keynesian models have not been used before lo illustrate this empirically important phenomenon. On the other hand, Professor Stephens does not explain how the problem has been analyzed before, albeit verbally, in the traditional Keynesian framework. Consequently, it may riot be readily apparent that complicating this framework with the assumption of diversified labor violates a venerable methodological rule: pluralites non est ponenda sine …

Nebraska Droughts A Study Of Their Past Chronological And Spatial Extent With Implications For The Future, Merlin P. Lawson, Allan Reiss, Randy Phillips, Kenneth Livingston Jan 1971

Nebraska Droughts A Study Of Their Past Chronological And Spatial Extent With Implications For The Future, Merlin P. Lawson, Allan Reiss, Randy Phillips, Kenneth Livingston

Department of Geography: Faculty Publications

The purpose of this study was to measure the spatial and temporal dimensions of drought occurrence in Nebraska. Such interpretations were facilitated by the computer generation of 468 maps showing monthly values of drought in Nebraska, from 1931 through 1969. While it was found that the frequency of consecutive drought is least in the central portion of the state, the intensity of drought is greatest in this region. Maps of correspondence which relate the areal correlation between rural population density and precipitation also indicate high positive relationships for central Nebraska. Interpretation of tree ring growth values using moving t-test plots …

Economic Sophistication In Nineteenth Century Congressional Tariff Debates, Richard C. Edwards Dec 1970

Economic Sophistication In Nineteenth Century Congressional Tariff Debates, Richard C. Edwards

Department of Economics: Faculty Publications

One of the most controversial economic issues confronting the American public during the nineteenth century was that of protection. The plea for a protective tariff had been raised as soon as the First Congress met in 1789. The issue was sharply debated off and on throughout the nineteenth century but never finally resolved. There is now a large literature relating the outcome of this issue to the economic and political interests of various involved groups.

Little effort has been made, however, to assess the impact of the tariff on economic growth, employment, and the dispersion of new technology. Nor has …
