All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

During the last three decades, there has been a significant growth in the outdoor recreation industry. In 1969, there were 17.6 million visits to national parks, and by 1978, that number had increased to 283.1 million (Gregory, 1972; U.S. Dept. of Commerce, 1979). Similarly, visits to national forests grew from 5 million in 1925 to over 147 million in 1965 (Clawson and Knetsch, 1966).

Lifestyle As A Determinant Of Participation Among Dispersed Forest Recreationists, John R. Butler May 1981

Lifestyle As A Determinant Of Participation Among Dispersed Forest Recreationists, John R. Butler

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

This study assesses the usefulness of lifestyle as a determinant of outdoor recreation behavior. Two objectives of the study are: (1) develop an operationalized concept of lifestyle that is based on theory, and (2) apply this concept in a model which uses lifestyle as a variable influencing recreation behavior.

The first objective was approached through an integrative review of the literature. Lifestyle was set in context of cultural theory. The basic postulate of the proposed theory of lifestyle is: If an individual's lifestyle is similar to that of another, certain social psychological processes are similar. Therefore, their patterns of needs, …

Televised Trials: Past And Present, Grant Greer Jan 1981

Televised Trials: Past And Present, Grant Greer

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

In the early fifties, the television media sought to cover criminal trials with television cameras. A few states allowed some television coverage, but they were a minority. One of these states, Texas, made constitutional history when it allowed the television coverage of the criminal trial of Billie Estes in 1962. The case had been appealed all the way to the Supreme Court, where his conviction had been reversed because of the television coverage of his trial. The Supreme Court's holding in that case had been rather ambiguous because one justice in the five - man majority, while agreeing with the …

Economic Impacts Of Irrigation Technologies In The Sevier River Basin, Theodore R. Frickel May 1980

Economic Impacts Of Irrigation Technologies In The Sevier River Basin, Theodore R. Frickel

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The economic well-being of the semi-arid intermountain area requires efficient use of available water supplies. Agriculture, the major water-consuming industry, depends on irrigation water. The adoption of sprinkler systems that increase irrigation "efficiencies" and increase water available for irrigation upstream may interfere with the "tenure" of downstream water rights. The farmers would like to use the water saved to irrigate additional acreages or crop to provide greater profits.

The problem in letting farmers expand their irrigated acreage is that the individual farmer increases his profits through increased consumptive use. The consequent reduction in return flows reduces the water available to …

Nonidentity Matching-To-Sample With Retarded Adolescents: Stimulus Equivalences And Sample-Comparison Control, Robert Stromer May 1980

Nonidentity Matching-To-Sample With Retarded Adolescents: Stimulus Equivalences And Sample-Comparison Control, Robert Stromer

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

In Experiment 1, four subjects were trained to match two visual samples (A) and their respective nonidentical visual comparisons (B); i.e., A-B matching. During nonreinforced test trials, all subjects demonstrated stimulus equivalences within the context of sample-comparison reversibility (B-A matching): When B stimuli were used as samples, appropriate responding to A comparisons occurred. A-B and B-A matching persisted given novel stimuli as alternate comparisons. However, the novel comparisons were consistently selected in the presence of nonmatching stimuli: i.e., during trials comprised of a novel comparison, an A or B sample from one stimulus class, and an "incorrect" comparison from the …

A Proposed Method Of Student Selection Using A Biographical Inventory As An Adjunctive Predictive Criterion, Jeffrey Scott Orme May 1980

A Proposed Method Of Student Selection Using A Biographical Inventory As An Adjunctive Predictive Criterion, Jeffrey Scott Orme

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The purpose of this paper was to investigate whether or not the use of a biographical inventory would be a feasible and viable adjunctive means of making more accurate predictions of student success in programs of upper-division and graduate study in speech pathology and audiology. During the past years, biographical inventories have been found to be predictive of creativity, performance as a military officer, performance in varied occupations, and academic performance. It was hypothesized that a biographical inventory could be developed which, when used in conjunction with the existing academic predictors of Grade Point Average and Graduate Records Examination scores, …

The Effect Of Modeling On Cooperation In The Laboratory And In The Natural Environment, Janice V. Siegel May 1980

The Effect Of Modeling On Cooperation In The Laboratory And In The Natural Environment, Janice V. Siegel

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

In this study a multiple-baseline design was used to determine the effectiveness of three different modeling sequences in increasing cooperative behavior in children in a laboratory situation. The research also assessed the short- and long-term effects of the laboratory procedures on children's behavior in a free-play setting.

Subjects were 9 pairs of preschool-aged children. In the laboratory situation pairs of subjects performed a block-stacking task which allowed them to respond either cooperatively or independently. Following baseline periods of varying lengths, the pairs of children were exposed to one of three videotapes of cooperative models. In Tape 1 adult models demonstrated …

The Development Of A Values Assessment Device Based Upon The Assumptions Underlying The Direct Approach To Moral Education, Todd Scott Larsen

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The purposes of the present research were two-fold. The first purpose was the development of a test construction strategy by which an objective assessment device, based upon the unique goals of moral education within a specific school district, may be developed. The second purpose was the actual development of a psychometrically sound instrument based upon such goals. To accomplish these aims, seven interrelated studies were conducted involving a total of 775 subjects.

The rationale for the nature of the test was based upon the assumptions of the direct approach to moral education. These assumptions are that children should learn and …

Oil And Iranian Development, Alireza Emami May 1980

Oil And Iranian Development, Alireza Emami

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The main concern of this study was two-fold: (a) to compute the Iranian economy's long-run growth potential consistent with full-capacity utilization of the output and stocks with the existing current and capital account matrices; and (b) to simulate the impacts that changing petroleum export levels have on capital formation, employment, and income distribution.

The analysis proceeded by developing a closed dynamic interindustry model in order to compute the "turnpike" growth rate. The uniform or "turnpike" growth rate computed for the base current and capital account matrices was 1.7 percent per annum. This describes the long-run growth potential for Iran. Given …
