A Comparison Of Two Non-Verbal Intelligence Tests As Predictors Of Academic Success Of Navajo Students, Stanford S. Larson May 1967

A Comparison Of Two Non-Verbal Intelligence Tests As Predictors Of Academic Success Of Navajo Students, Stanford S. Larson

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

This study was a search for a valid and reliable tool for the measurement and appraisal of the Navajo student at Intermountain School whose cultural and bilingual background make many highly verbal tests untrustworthy. The two tests chosen for the study were the Chicago Non-verbal Examination and the Cattell Institute for Personality and Ability Testing Culture Free Test. It was assumed that these tests would call attention to students who had good intellectual ability but were below standard in reading and verbal development and had been overlooked because of their lack of verbal fluency.

The two tests were administered to …

Guarded And Unguarded Responses To Sentence Completion Tests Among Normal Adolescents And Juvenile Delinquents, Mohammed K. Fazel May 1967

Guarded And Unguarded Responses To Sentence Completion Tests Among Normal Adolescents And Juvenile Delinquents, Mohammed K. Fazel

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

This study was designed to test the responses of a group of juvenile delinquests and a group of normal adolescents to a sentence completion test. The test used was a modified form of Sack's Sentence Completion test in two forms--form A, first person stems and form B, third person stems. The hypothesis to be tested were (1) people project more in the third person, (2) the normal projects more, and (3) there would be no difference in projection on neutral items. The results bear out the three hypothesis. The sex scale, however, was an exception. This may be due to …

An Experiment To Determine If Teacher Preparation In A Small High School Can Be Reduced By Alternating Class Scheduling, John Carl Tuft May 1967

An Experiment To Determine If Teacher Preparation In A Small High School Can Be Reduced By Alternating Class Scheduling, John Carl Tuft

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The purpose of this study was to determine if by alternating certain classes biennially the number of different teaching preparations could be reduced thus decreasing the teachers' load. The study also attempted to ascertain the effect this type of scheduling had upon the attitudes of teachers and students toward these classes. A further attempt was made to determine if mixing students from two grade levels resulted in the younger student being penalized with respect to his cumulative grade point average.

The significant conclusions that can be drawn from the results follow:

Teachers, generally, thought well of the project and desires …

Internal Versus External Control Of Reinforcement As A Variant Of Concern For The Teacher And Counselor, Neldon Devere Kingston May 1967

Internal Versus External Control Of Reinforcement As A Variant Of Concern For The Teacher And Counselor, Neldon Devere Kingston

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Rotter's (1954, 1960, 1964) social learning theory suggests that a reinforcement acts to strengthen an expectancy. These expectancies may differ from situation to situation; however, it is postulated (Rotter, 1960) that they bear a direct relationship to the potential occurrence of a behavior. Furthermore,

"...it is presumed that the relationship between goal preference (reinforcement value) and behavior can be determined only by introducing the concept of the individual's expectancy, on the basis of past history, that the given behavior will actually lead to a satisfying outcome rather than to punishment, failure, or, more generally, to negative reinforcement." (Rotter, 1960, p. …

A Method For Quantifying The Effects Of Apomorphine Upon The Gnawing Syndrome Of The Rat, Paul Robinson May 1967

A Method For Quantifying The Effects Of Apomorphine Upon The Gnawing Syndrome Of The Rat, Paul Robinson

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Various methods were tried in an attempt to obtain a technique for quantifying the gnawing effects of apomorphine on rats. A technique using a restraining tube was developed.

Under a 2 milligram per kilogram intraperitoneal injection of apomorphine, four female Long Evans hooded rats were placed on continuous and fixed reinforcement schedules using a gnawable pine block. Subjects would learn to turn their heads away from the gnawable object in order to obtain 15 seconds of gnawing time. The rate of response increased from less than one response in 5 minutes to over 3 responses per minute in 10 one-half …

Variation In The Order Of Presentation Of Cues As One Variable In Concept Organization, John E. Genasci May 1967

Variation In The Order Of Presentation Of Cues As One Variable In Concept Organization, John E. Genasci

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

In the experiment, with forty-eight students as subjects, a series of nonsense syllables (DAX, MEF, TOV, VIC, YOP, ZIP, and ZIL) were to be associated with four geometric figures. The task was so arranged that Zip applied to all figures, Dax and Vic to subsets of two figures each, and the remaining were individual labels. In each of three experiments there was an experimental group that received pre-response cueing by means of an analogy which involved hierarchic concepts in the same general form, i. e ., animal, wild, tame, and individual names.

The results suggest that the order and timing …

Control Of Behavior Through Reinforcement Menus, Gary Lyndle Holt May 1967

Control Of Behavior Through Reinforcement Menus, Gary Lyndle Holt

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Reinforcement menus were used to change response probabilities while maintaining control over two ''trainable," female, mentally retarded children.

An empirically determined reinforcement menu representing high probability behaviors, five for S1 and four for S2, was used in a contingency management system. Instructions were given concerning the contingencies for obtaining reinforcement. Subjects were allowed the opportunity to engage in a high probability behavior only after successful completion of fixed units of reading or arithmetic tasks. After stable performance was established, four additional menus were prepared to approximate in increasing degree, low probability behavior. Measurements were taken of task …

Comparison Of Mosaic Responses Of Disadvantaged And Advantaged Preschool Children, Renée Ostler May 1967

Comparison Of Mosaic Responses Of Disadvantaged And Advantaged Preschool Children, Renée Ostler

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Developmental age differences were studied between a group of Head Start children and a group of preschool children attending the Utah State University Child Development Laboratory. The Lowenfeld Mosaic Test was used to make distinctions between the child whose developmental age was below his age in years. The results were compared to the four-year and five-year chronological age level of the Armes and Ilg scoring criteria.

Although behavior in response to the Mosaic test developed in the same way for both the disadvantaged children and the advantaged children, the products or Mosaic designs of the disadvantaged children were less mature …

The Adolescents Preference For Counselors In Relation To Their Degree Of Religious Conviction, James W. Fitch May 1967

The Adolescents Preference For Counselors In Relation To Their Degree Of Religious Conviction, James W. Fitch

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

In a highly complex culture, there are numerous factors that influence ones life. The more industrialized societies promote tremendous structure for the entire population. The past World War II era has been labeled "The Age of Anxiety" (28, p.3). In some respects children are being forced to mature at an earlier age. The "storm and stress" period of the adolescent is receiving considerable recognition in our current literature and the adults are taking on increasing amounts of structure which are all resulting in more complex culture.

The Ideology Of The John Birch Society, Max P. Peterson May 1966

The Ideology Of The John Birch Society, Max P. Peterson

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

This study is designed to examine and evaluate the basic beliefs and actions of the John Birch Society. It is not intended to determine the proper location for the Society on the American political spectrum, but to merely represent an opinion. An objective approach is intended, but the conclusion expresses a point of view, which, I hope, is clear and consistent enough to allow those who may disagree to take issue.

There is a great deal of room for disagreement on a subject such as this. The sources used in determining the content of this presentation are listed in the …

The Dynamics Of Duopoly, Gordon E. Johnson May 1966

The Dynamics Of Duopoly, Gordon E. Johnson

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

A monopolist, knowing the demand curve for his product, can in a given period produce the quantity of this product which will maximize his profit. Any larger or smaller quantity will result in less profit. When another manufacturer starts producing the same or similar product, a duopoly result. The new manufacturer, in order to maximize his profit, according to Cournot, will choose a quantity that is derived on the assumption that the original manufacturer's quantity will remain fixed.

A Study Of The Function Of Visual Imagery, Type Of Mediator, And Associative Frequency In Induced Mediation Paradigms, Ted Christiansen May 1966

A Study Of The Function Of Visual Imagery, Type Of Mediator, And Associative Frequency In Induced Mediation Paradigms, Ted Christiansen

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Bugelski and Sharlock (1952) credit McGeoch with saying that although the concept of mediation was an old one, it had generated more discussion than experimentation. Bugelski and Sharlock in commenting on McGeoch's statements had this to say, "The concept of mediation is of great potential value for the psychological analysis of learning, thinking, and insight." (Bugelski and Sharlock, 1952, p. 334) The views of Bugelski and Sharlock represent the current thinking in verbal learning circles relevant to the importance of mediation in symbolic forms of behavior. The experimental emphasis, at the present time, is upon the conditions underlying the process. …

Optimum Size And Location For A Northern Utah Feed Mill, Morris Duane Whitaker May 1966

Optimum Size And Location For A Northern Utah Feed Mill, Morris Duane Whitaker

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Over the years, Utah has enjoyed the advantage of having natural agricultural resources that favor the production of livestock. Sheep and beef cattle do well on the desert and high mountain ranges that cover much of the state, Dairy cattle and wintering beef cattle use the alfalfa and native hay along with some corn silage that is grown in the irrigated valleys. Feed grains are grown in rotation with forage crops on irrigated land and also on dry land. Before 1950, the quantities of feed grains produced had been sufficient to meet the needs of dairy, range livestock and poultry. …

The greatest number of layoffs took place throughout the early months of 1964.

A Program For Hospitalized Children, Leslie Joan Bishop May 1966

A Program For Hospitalized Children, Leslie Joan Bishop

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

When children are hospitalized they are exposed to an unfamiliar and frequently forboding world of an efficiently run institution. They cannot, as adults do, afford to interrupt (Plant, 1962) their normal way of living and exclude the relationships, play and learning that contribute to their overall growth.

There is a general tendency for children to be treated much in the same manner that adults are when they are confined in a hospital situation. The adult (Chapman, 1956) is prepared to make this temporary adjustment because he is aware, to some extent, of the need for hospitalization and the positive consequence …

The Preschool Child's Concept Of God, Linda Thompson Saxton May 1966

The Preschool Child's Concept Of God, Linda Thompson Saxton

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The setting is a cheerful nursery school room bustling with activity and lively three and four year old children. Sally, Tom, and Dick are building with blocks and are busily engaged in conversation regarding who is "boss" of the project.

"I'm the boss," states Sally emphatically.

''No, I'm the boss." retorts Dick with just as much enthusiasm.

"Did you know that God is boss of the whole world?" questions Tom thoughtfully. So we see one more example of the tremendous task of reaching for and of gathering in facts and experiences in the environment in order to create some semblance …

Implications Of Absentee Courtships, William Rolfe Kerr May 1966

Implications Of Absentee Courtships, William Rolfe Kerr

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

In our society today the progress of many courtships and engagements is interrupted by separations of varying periods of time and for various reasons. Hill (1949) found that wartime family separations cause a two-dimensional crisis constituting a hazard to the continuance of the relationship both at the time of separation and at the time of reunion. The assumption is made that a courtship would be affected in a similar way. Blood (1963, p. 161) says,

Both partners change somewhat while they are apart. This is not due to the separation alone, however, for personality changes go on constantly. When people …

Estimating Forage Production Following Pinyon-Juniper Control: A Probabilistic Approach, Terrence F. Glover May 1966

Estimating Forage Production Following Pinyon-Juniper Control: A Probabilistic Approach, Terrence F. Glover

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

An important management practice within the 60-80 million acres of Pinyon-Juniper woodlands is to convert these woodlands to open rangelands. The success or failure of seedling adapted grasses in place of trees is contingent upon the revegetation techniques employed and upon fortuitous weather patterns. In order to formulate policy for Pinyon-Juniper control decisions, persons responsible for such policies need to know the risks of introducing range grasses into given areas. This thesis is essentially a hypothesis concerning the magnitude of such risks.

Selecting Optimum Conversion Practices In The Pinyon-Juniper Type, Richard J. Marasco May 1966

Selecting Optimum Conversion Practices In The Pinyon-Juniper Type, Richard J. Marasco

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

A profit criterion which will make possible the selection of optimum conversion practices in the Pinyon-Juniper woodlands can be made operational if: (a) it is possible to predict eradication costs and resulting total costs (eradication costs, seed costs, and seed application costs), and (b) it is possible to determine for age production resulting from initial eradication, as well as when it reaches absolute minimum allowable limit due to tree re-growth. Knowledge of the above relationships makes it possible to determine the optimum practice.

Influence Of A Male Or Female Teacher On Sex-Role Preferences Of The Pre-School Child, Mary Jane Mecham May 1966

Influence Of A Male Or Female Teacher On Sex-Role Preferences Of The Pre-School Child, Mary Jane Mecham

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The primary function of a nursery school is to educate children, or to provide opportunities for them to learn about their environment, their relationships, and their own selves. The most crucial part of the learning situation in the nursery school is the teacher, whose task it is to promote learning through provision of a variety of experiences by means of which children can discover themselves and begin to relate to the world and to other people.

A Historical Survey Of The Economic Development Of Mainland China, 1949-1962, Mandhatasinh A. Chauhan May 1966

A Historical Survey Of The Economic Development Of Mainland China, 1949-1962, Mandhatasinh A. Chauhan

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Chinese agriculture differs from the Western agriculture in the development and utilization of agricultural science on the fields. China has always been an agricultural country, but she failed to improve in techniques of cultivation as the time passed by. The land, prior to the Communist take-over, was owned and cultivated by individuals and the produce was sold in a free-market. Unfortunately, the Chinese government, prior to 1949, failed to bring about adequate agricultural reforms and implement economic development measures.

As a result an overwhelming proportion of the population of China is occupied on the land, the supply of which is …

The Impact Of Research And Development On Income And Employment In Utah, Thomas Clark Anderson May 1966

The Impact Of Research And Development On Income And Employment In Utah, Thomas Clark Anderson

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Research and development (R&D) play an increasingly important role in the economy of the United States. Total expenditures for R&D during the decade of the 1950's were greater than in the entire history of the United States previous to that time. As a percent of gross national product, R&D has grown from 0.2 percent in 1921, to 0.4 to 0.6 percent in the 1930's and 1940's, and is now more than 3 percent.1

Much has been said of the impact that the growth of R&D has on the general economy. R&D had also had a significant economic and sociocultural …

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Since the end of World War II the Importance of the teen-age market has steadily grown. An article by Grace and Fred Hechinqer (10) In the 1961 New York Times Magazine substantiates this statement: "the young slowly are capturing an ever-growing share of the nation's market, both through their own purchasing power, and through effective dictation to parents."

Stuttering In Utah Fifth Grade Children: An Incidence Study, Thomas S. Johnson May 1966

Stuttering In Utah Fifth Grade Children: An Incidence Study, Thomas S. Johnson

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Children afflicted with speech disorders represent the largest single group of exceptional children. The numbers of speech defectives reach between 2 and 2½ million or about 5% of the population (Johnson et al., 1956). Newman (1961) has disputed this claim and has stressed the difference to be made between speech differences and handicapping conditions:

It can be confidently stated that 5% of the population categorized speech handicapped, have speech differences of such a nature that the differences can be pointed out, recorded, classified, or quantified in some reliable manner. But that does not necessarily make the conditions handicapping or impairing. …

Adolescent Attitudes Toward The Employment Of Women, Ann Leigh Adams May 1966

Adolescent Attitudes Toward The Employment Of Women, Ann Leigh Adams

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The past twenty-five years has brought about a substantial increase in the number of American women participating in the labor force. In 1940, approximately 12.8 million women were involved in employment outside the home; this was 25 percent of the total female population 14 years of age and over. By 1964, the number of employed women had doubled; there were then 25.8 million women workers. Out-of-the-home employment was actively engaging 37 percent of American women (7, p. 301). However, not only has there been an increase in the number of workers; there are also changes in the percent of women …
