Navajo Student Food Preferences, Kathlyn L. Coffman

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Adapt -- “to make suitable to requirements; adjust or modify fittingly." Adaptability is a trait which has been attributed to Navajo Indians by anthropologists, educators, novelists, psychologists, artists -- in fact, by almost everyone who has had dealings with them over a period of time. Yet, to identify specific examples of their adaptability and the attempt to measure the effect upon interpersonal relations of evidences of adaptation has proved to be no easy task.

A History And Economic Analysis Of The Hyrum Reclamation Project, Douglas Eldon Brinley May 1966

A History And Economic Analysis Of The Hyrum Reclamation Project, Douglas Eldon Brinley

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The Reclamation Ac t of 1902 was sign ed into law under the hand of President Theodore Roosevelt on June 17 of that year, culminating years of efforts to involve the federal government in reclamation projects. Prior to this Congress had enacted a variety of land laws designed to encourage private enterprise to develop the land and water resources of the nation, but had resisted using federal funds to construct reclamation works. The early land laws, however, served only as a temporary satisfaction to Western settlers, and Congress finally yielded to the pressure for assistance.

The Self-Concept And Failure In The Junior High School, Milton C. Madsen May 1965

The Self-Concept And Failure In The Junior High School, Milton C. Madsen

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

From the observations of counselors and teachers within our school district there seem to be these indications: (a) That many failing students are experiencing personal adjustment problems due to a faulty self concept and that they tend to behave in terms of how they perceive themselves, or according to the role forced on them by others. So if they have been labeled as a failing student this is the role they perceive for themselves and they tend to behave in terms of the role they perceive for themselves. (b) Non-promoted students who have been retained seem to have a lower …

A Comparison Of The Academic Achievement And Social Adjustment Of Mentally Retarded Students, C. Thomas Musgrave

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

They were treated with aversion and subjected to many indignities.

The Programmed Text As An Aid To Teaching Spelling In Junior High School, Gordon Howard Nicholls

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Organized education, historically, has been slow to commit itself to any sort of intensive examination of how learning can be both analyzed and substantially improved. But today Komoski (1960) tells us that we are looking beyond the traditional approaches to teaching. If a newly developed method is shown to be more effective than the techniques which have traditionally been employed, it is carefully considered for incorporation into the current education program.

Programmed instruction is just such an example of a recently developed teaching method which claims it will contribute much to education. It dates back to Pressey's report (1926) of …

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The phenomenon of not relying solely up on one's own judgment and of distorting one's perception toward a perceived social norm has been observed to take place with a rather large percentage of subjects participating in a number of research projects. Both Asch and Sherif have done extensive work showing this distortion of perception when an individual is placed in a group setting and finds himself in a contradictory position between his own perception and that of the other group members.

Acts Of Incorporation In Territorial Utah, Jerry R. Lounsbury

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The legal framework used by the Mormon pioneers to establish corporations was imported into early Utah as were many other institutional ideas, social customs, and economic principles used in establishing their Zion. To understand in some completeness the effect of the corporate organization in Territorial Utah it is requisite that we first understand what constituted a corporation at that time and how this device was applied to the formation of business enterprises. What follows is a brief discussion of the development of the characteristics of the corporate organization from its origin to its implementation in early Utah.

The Use Of "Fashion Therapy" As Adjunctive Therapy In The Rehabilitation Of Psychiatric Patients, Virginia Geddes Eyestone

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Mental illness is one of the greatest public health problems and foremost challenges of our time. However, because of improved medical practices and modern research methods, more mental patients are now being released and returned to society than at any other recorded period.

The mentally ill person loses touch with reality. Things that once were of primary concern are no longer important. Many mental patients become accustomed to carelessness in dress and personal habits. This state of deterioration often remains as a mark of mental illness, and the resulting inappropriate dress frequently limits the activity of the individual. The patient …

Factors Related To First Year College Success In A Selected Group Of Scholarship Recipients, Laverl C. Giles

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The idea of a scholarship program is almost as old as the oldest institution of higher learning. The universality of such a program is almost completely comprehensive throughout the world. Although the purpose of scholarship programs has varied as much as each of the institutions varies, in most of the situations the programs have been well acclaimed. The success of these programs in terms of the student has often been tested or at least scrutinized. This type of study has been attempted several times. However, both Harris (11) and Endler (7), in reviewing the literature from 1931 to 1959, report …

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Counseling centers at many universities are constantly trying to improve their value to the universities by identifying the students who have problems, and by making known to students the services that are available. Since many counseling centers are in direct contact with large numbers of students during the admissions testing program, it would seem that data gathered at this time should be carefully examined for clues that would aid a student in making a healthy and profitable adjustment to his university environment.

A Comparative Study Of Economic Development: Thailand And India, Charnchai Charnchayasuk

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Quickening the rate of economic growth and the conquest of poverty are the primary expressed objects of public policy in the underdeveloped countries of the world. In the new countries, particularly in Africa and Asia which have recently become independent, it was necessary to start almost from scratch in the construction of an advanced economy. Such countries have usually had (a) a high proportion of population in agriculture, with low productivity; (b) little capital per person and crude technology; (c) major expenditures for food; (d) high birth and death rates; (e) poor health and sanitation; and (f) a low level …

Reactions To Parenthood, Geraldine Rosine Brinley May 1965

Reactions To Parenthood, Geraldine Rosine Brinley

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Parenthood is a common experience, in the sense that it is almost universal among married couples, but it is a unique experience in the sense that there are great individual variations in its meaning and its impact upon the life of each parent.

In spite of the many variations in reactions and responses to parenthood, a stereotype reaction seems to prevail. The stereotyped conception of behavior following the conception of a child is for the wife to be filled with some inner joy which causes her to behave mysteriously for a time until she reveals the unsuspected truth to her …

Sex Preferences And Identifications Of Young Children, Loa Thomson May 1965

Sex Preferences And Identifications Of Young Children, Loa Thomson

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The acquisition of normal sex-role behavior is one of the fundamental tasks which goes into developing a healthy personality. More needs to be understood about the processes involved in adopting proper sex-role behavior patterns. How does a little girl adopt the feminine role and learn to be a woman? How does a little boy adopt the masculine role and learn to be a man? From the studies in clinical psychology and psychiatry, it is evident that personality maladjustments and certain forms of emotional disorders appear to be related to difficulties in sex-role adjustment. This suggests a close correlation between childhood …

Children's Friends In Ability Vs. Randomly Grouped Classrooms, Nolan Kay Griffin

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

For over forty years ability grouping has been of professional concern to educators in the United States (Reisner, 1936). There have been fundamental changes in educational theory and practice during that time, one of which is the recognition that educational practices must adjust to individual differences. The interpretation of "equal opportunity" in education has gradually changed from meaning the same methods, standards, and course content for all children, to meaning the full opportunity for each child to develop his own potential in a school program suited to his individual capacities and needs.

The interpersonal relationships and social development of school …

An Analysis Of Prices At Utah Livestock Auctions, Mcneil Glenn May 1964

An Analysis Of Prices At Utah Livestock Auctions, Mcneil Glenn

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

From the time of Don Hernando Cortez, livestock has been one of America's greatest industries. The cattle in Cortez's time were Moorish stock which had been bred for centuries in the Andalusian Plains of Spain.

Following this beginning in about 1521, cattle were bred and brought from South America to Mexico. By 1583 the first herds were grazing in what is now Texas.

This was the beginning of the livestock industry and with it carne the endless search for fertile valleys, waterholes, feed in the winter, long trail drives, cattle rustlers, railroads, range wars, and a great American institution, The …

International Cooperation In The Economic Development Of Latin America, Antonella Picchio May 1964

International Cooperation In The Economic Development Of Latin America, Antonella Picchio

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

As an Italian, with less than a year in the Western Hemisphere, I now find myself with a “mixed” personality. As someone else expressed it, "I am physically Italian, Latin American by adoption, and gaily American." This may well be a good combination for writing a thesis on Latin America. My "Latin blood" may help me in understanding the mentality of the people of Latin America, while my studies in Italy--a country with a long experience as an underdeveloped country--may contribute toward a personal understanding of the problems of poverty, social injustice, and political instability. Three months of experience in …

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

It has been evidenced by the increased amount of contacts being made in Counseling Services of Utah State University that students have been very much concerned about whether or not they should be in college. An increased drop-out rate among students has been found in the past few years. This study has been accomplished to determine which of the entering students at Utah State have been sufficiently prepared to enter into a course of …

Pupil Attitudes Toward School, Peers, And Teachers Under Ability-Grouped And Random-Grouped Systems In Weber And Ogden School Districts, Val R. Christensen

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Attitudes are usually defined as feelings for or against something (Remmers and Gage, 1955). They are very important in the lives of people because they help determine future success in an individual's life. Because of them one works to get the things he wants, one votes for or against certain issues, one joins a cause, opposes something, or attempts to influence others.
