Integrating Marriage Education Into Perinatal Education, Alan J. Hawkins, Tamara Gilliland, Glenda Christiaens, Jason S. Carroll

Faculty Publications

Couples making the transition to parenthood experience challenges that can threaten the quality and stability of their relationships and the health of family members. Currently, the educational infrastructure to support the delivery of couple-relationship education during the transition to parenthood is limited. Because new-parent couples interact with the health care system at many points during this transition time, an opportunity exists for strengthening couple relationships within the system to improve the well-being of adults and children. in this article, we propose a productive collaboration between marriage/couple educators and health care systems to integrate couple-relationship education into the standard of perinatal …

A Metadata Approach To Preservation Of Digital Resources: The University Of North Texas Libraries' Experience, Daniel Gelaw Alemneh, Samantha K. Hastings, Cathy Hartman

Faculty Publications

Preserving long-term access to digital information resources is one of the key challenges facing libraries and information centers today. The University of North Texas (UNT) Libraries has entered into partnership agreements with federal and state agencies to ensure permanent storage and public access to a variety of government information sources. As digital resource preservation encompasses a wide variety of interrelated activities, the UNT Libraries are taking a phased approach to ensure the long-term access to its digital resources. Formulation of preservation policy and creation of preservation metadata for electronic files and digital collections are among the most important steps. This …

Faculty Publications

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether child physical maltreatment early in life has long-term effects on psychological, behavioral, and academic problems independent of other characteristics associated with maltreatment.

DESIGN: Prospective longitudinal study with data collected annually from 1987 through 1999.

SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS: Randomly selected, community-based samples of 585 children from the ongoing Child Development Project were recruited the summer before children entered kindergarten in 3 geographic sites. Seventy-nine percent continued to participate in grade 11. The initial in-home interviews revealed that 69 children (11.8%) had experienced physical maltreatment prior to kindergarten matriculation.

MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Adolescent assessment of school grades, standardized …

Interdisciplinarity: The Road Ahead For Education In Digital Libraries, Anita Coleman

Faculty Publications

This article reviews the state of education in digital libraries and curriculum planning documents from professional associations in two areas: Library and Information Science; and Computing. It examines suggestions for integration and interdisciplinarity in education for digital libraries curricula using definitions of a discipline, interdisciplinarity, and the transdisciplinary structure of a university in order to discover how such integration may be successfully accomplished. A plan to use learning communities and develop an interdisciplinary curriculum for Knowledge Organization is briefly discussed.

Child, Parent, And Peer Predictors Of Early-Onset Substance Use: A Multisite Longitudinal Study, Julie B Kaplow, Patrick J Curran, Kenneth A Dodge

Faculty Publications

The purpose of this study was to identify kindergarten-age predictors of early-onset substance use from demographic, environmental, parenting, child psychological, behavioral, and social functioning domains. Data from a longitudinal study of 295 children were gathered using multiple-assessment methods and multiple informants in kindergarten and 1st grade. Annual assessments at ages 10, 11, and 12 reflected that 21% of children reported having initiated substance use by age 12. Results from longitudinal logistic regression models indicated that risk factors at kindergarten include being male, having a parent who abused substances, lower levels of parental verbal reasoning, higher levels of overactivity, more thought …

Legal Theory And The Rule Of Law, Noel B. Reynolds May 2002

Legal Theory And The Rule Of Law, Noel B. Reynolds

Faculty Publications

In "Legal Theory and the Rule of Law" Noel Reynolds maintains that the rule of law can be understood as a set of conditions that rational actors would impose on any authority they would create to act in their stead in creating and administering legally binding rules. The authority and obligation associated with law derive from this fundamental convention, and the principles of the rule of law are the conditions of that agreement, which become thereby governing principles to which legislatures, judges, and enforcement agencies can be held in their official actions. These generally recognized standards are inherent in this …

Parental Substance Use Disorder And The Risk Of Adolescent Drug Abuse: An Event History Analysis, John P. Hoffmann, Felicia G. Cerbone May 2002

Parental Substance Use Disorder And The Risk Of Adolescent Drug Abuse: An Event History Analysis, John P. Hoffmann, Felicia G. Cerbone

Faculty Publications

A common observation in the research literature is that children of drug-dependent parents are at significantly heightened risk of adolescent drug use, abuse, and dependence. Recent research indicates that several psychological and interpersonal factors may affect the association between parents’ psychoactive substance use disorder (PSUD) and drug use risks among adolescents, yet studies have failed to examine explicitly whether these factors moderate the association between PSUD and adolescent substance abuse. This paper explores these potential relationships using longitudinal data from a study that has followed three cohorts of adolescents and their families over a 7-year period. The cohorts are defined …

"Do You Have Any Books On..." An Examination Of Public Library Holdings, Cynthia Bassett, John M. Budd Mar 2002

"Do You Have Any Books On..." An Examination Of Public Library Holdings, Cynthia Bassett, John M. Budd

Faculty Publications

Public librarians have long debated the question of whether quality or popularity should drive collection decisions. A survey of the selected holdings of twenty medium-sized public libraries indicates that both quality and popularity may be determining factors in whether to acquire particular titles. Furthermore, the study suggests that the existence and content of reviews may also influence the likelihood of libraries to select particular titles, as may the selectors' perception of the diversity of their community.

Perceived Internal Depth In Rotating And Translating Objects, M. L. Braunstein, C. W. Sauer, Cary S. Feria, G. J. Andersen

Faculty Publications

Previous research has indicated that observers use differences between velocities and ratios of velocities to judge the depth within a moving object, although depth cannot in general be determined from these quantities. In four experiments we examined the relative effects of velocity difference and velocity ratio on judged depth within a transparent object that was rotating about a vertical axis and translating horizontally, examined the effects of the velocity difference for pure rotations and pure translations, and examined the effect of the velocity difference for objects that varied in simulated internal depth. Both the velocity difference and the velocity ratio …

Please Forgive Me: Transgressors’ Emotions And Physiology During Imagery Of Seeking Forgiveness And Victim Responses, Charlotte Vanoyen-Witvliet, Thomas Ludwig, David J. Bauer Jan 2002

Please Forgive Me: Transgressors’ Emotions And Physiology During Imagery Of Seeking Forgiveness And Victim Responses, Charlotte Vanoyen-Witvliet, Thomas Ludwig, David J. Bauer

Faculty Publications

We assessed transgressors’ subjective emotions and physiological responses in a within-subjects imagery study involving 20 male and 20 female participants. Two imagery conditions focused on the transgressor’s actions: participants 1) ruminated about a real-life transgression and 2) imagined seeking forgiveness from the victim. Three imagery conditions focused on the victim’s possible responses: participants imagined their victims responding with 1) a grudge, 2) genuine forgiveness, and 3) reconciliation. Compared to ruminations about one’s transgression or an unforgiving response from the victim, imagery of forgiveness-seeking and merciful responses from victims (forgiveness and reconciliation) prompted improvements in basic emotions (e.g., sadness, anger) and …

Are Plurals Derived Or Stored?, David Eddington, Patricia Lestrade Jan 2002

Are Plurals Derived Or Stored?, David Eddington, Patricia Lestrade

Faculty Publications

The ability to produce and comprehend human language involves at least two processes: the storage of units and the computations performed on those units. The role that storage and computation play in the processing of inflectional morphology is highly debated. At one end of the spectrum is the full storage model, which holds that all known words, whether morphologically complex or not, have separate entries in the mental lexicon (Jackendoff 1975, Manelis and Tharp 1977, Butterworth 1983, Bybee 1985, 1988, Rumelhart and McClelland 1986, McClelland 1988, Stemberger 1994, Rueckl, Mikolinski, Raveh, Miner, and Mars 1997). This position puts an enormous …

The Many Uses Of Digitized Oral History Collections: Implications For Design, Dagobert Soergel, Douglas W. Oard, Samuel Gustman, Lydia Fraser, Jinmook Kim, Joan Meyer, Elizabeth Proffen, Theresa Sartori

Faculty Publications

Oral history - and spoken word collections generally - are assuming increasing importance in digital libraries as the storage, transmission and reproduction infrastructure improves. This paper describes three synergistic approaches to user needs analysis, explains how they are being applied to guide the design of systems to provide access oral history collections (using a s test bed the Shoah Foundations collection of over 50,000 videotaped oral history interviews), presents preliminary results from so -called “discount requirements analysis” and an analysis of “early access” requests, and draws some design implications. The results show a wide variety of users and uses of …

The Jewish Community Library In Vienna: From Dispersion And Destruction To Partial Restoration, Richard Hacken Jan 2002

The Jewish Community Library In Vienna: From Dispersion And Destruction To Partial Restoration, Richard Hacken

Faculty Publications

On 25 October 2000, Austria’s first memorial to Jewish victims of the Holocaust was unveiled at the Judenplatz in Vienna. Conceived by Nazi hunter Simon Wiesenthal and designed by British sculptress Rachel Whiteread in the form of a nameless library, a concrete block displays shelves of books with their spines turned to the inside, enclosing an area made inaccessible by a permanently locked door. The outer memorial is designed to represent Jewish culture and learning that were lost forever in the Holocaust, while the empty space within symbolises the many readers of the library who did not live on. Parallel …

Parental Psychological Control: Implications For Childhood Physical And Relational Aggression, David A. Nelson, Nicki R. Crick Jan 2002

Parental Psychological Control: Implications For Childhood Physical And Relational Aggression, David A. Nelson, Nicki R. Crick

Faculty Publications

Children who experience difficulties with peers also tend to experience both concurrent social–psychological difficulties and long-term negative developmental outcomes. Specifically, a significant amount of research has identified peer rejection and isolation as significant precursors to academic troubles and socially deviant behavior (DeRosier, Kupersmidt, & Patterson, 1994; Kupersmidt, Coie, & Dodge, 1990; Parker & Asher, 1987; Parker, Rubin, Price, & DeRosier, 1995). Substantial research and intervention efforts have consequently been dedicated to an understanding of the problem behaviors commonly identified as correlates or antecedents of peer rejection. Childhood aggression is one of the most significant predictors of peer rejection, and has …
