Using “Slow” To Reframe Failure: Fusing Wisdom From The Slow Movement With Self-Compassion Principles To Transform Communication Failures, Christine E. Crouse-Dick
Using “Slow” To Reframe Failure: Fusing Wisdom From The Slow Movement With Self-Compassion Principles To Transform Communication Failures, Christine E. Crouse-Dick
Feminist Pedagogy
This pedagogical approach invites students to critically examine conventional conceptions of failure. Informed by principles of the Slow Movement and self-compassion, this teaching activity prompts recurring reflection on who has power to define failure and how our responses to perceived failures shape our identities, relationships, and trajectories. Through reflective writing, speaking, and listening exercises, students are encouraged to reframe evaluations of communication failures with a lens that prioritizes contemplation, holistic context, self-companionship, and openness. By challenging masculinized notions of failure that lack self-compassion, this approach cultivates a growth mindset and helps students find more equitable, collectively compassionate interpretations of perceived …
A Study And Critique Of Sexual Violence Against Disabled Individuals In Sub-Saharan Africa: Implications For Policy And Practice Of Trauma-Informed Care, Kaeley Sells
Lux et Fides: A Journal for Undergraduate Christian Scholars
This paper examines and critiques current sexual violence against disabled individuals in Sub-Saharan Africa by evaluating the social and cultural stigma present that perpetuates cycles of vulnerabilities. Currently, women and girls with disabilities are disproportionally at risk for sexual violence as economic, cultural, and political structures in many Sub-Saharan African countries fail to recognize and adequately protect those with disabilities. Incorporating evidence from journals, books, reviews, and studies, this paper demonstrates the need for non-government and government actors to recognize the need to provide protection and trauma-informed care for disabled individuals.

Exploring The Career Advancement Of African American Women Within Senior Leadership In Federal Law Enforcement, Mary Ellen Mack Dickey
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
African American women who retired or currently work in senior leadership roles within federal law enforcement agencies continuously deal with various biases. However, there is limited qualitative research of African American women in senior leadership. Therefore, the purpose of this interpretive phenomenological study is aimed to uncover the reasons behind the disparate and discriminatory treatment experienced by these women and explore opportunities. Fourteen African American women were interviewed to obtain information related to the central research question. Results revealed three themes and three subthemes (1) Mental and spiritual welfare; the subthemes emerged were: (a) self-confidence, (b) leveraging relationships, and (c) …
Perceptions Of Licensed Independent Social Workers On How Their Master Of Social Work Program Prepared Them To Work With Substance-Using Clients, Kelly A Vacca
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Due to a lack of accreditation standards requiring Master of Social Work (MSW) degree programs to include substance use and addiction-related courses, many MSW graduates in the United States are unprepared to meet the needs of this growing population. The purpose of this qualitative study, which was underpinned by Bandura's self-efficacy theory, was to explore the perceptions and experiences of licensed independent social workers (LISW) regarding the role their MSW program education played in preparing them to work with substance use and addicted populations. The six participants identified as having graduated from an accredited MSW program, holding a bachelor’s degree …
Black Stereotypes In Basketball Films, Carsen Jackson Williams
Black Stereotypes In Basketball Films, Carsen Jackson Williams
Theses and Dissertations
This study conducts a frequency analysis on the Black stereotypes portrayed in popular basketball films through the lens of media framing. Academic literature has made a frequent topic of racial bias and its role in professional sports, particularly through sports media. However, there is a gap in the literature when looking specifically at basketball films as a whole and the prevalence therein of racial stereotypes, specifically Black stereotypes. Using framing theory as the backbone of the study, a frequency analysis was completed of main characters in the ten most popular basketball films to identify what Black Stereotypes arise. Most common …
The Future Of Intergenerational Transmission Research: A Prospective, Three-Generation Approach, Mariann A. Howland, Laura M. Glynn
The Future Of Intergenerational Transmission Research: A Prospective, Three-Generation Approach, Mariann A. Howland, Laura M. Glynn
Psychology Faculty Articles and Research
Dr. Dante Cicchetti’s pioneering theory and research on developmental psychopathology have been fundamental to the proliferation of research on intergenerational transmission over the last 40 years. In part due to this foundation, much has been learned about continuities and discontinuities in child maltreatment, attachment, parenting, and psychopathology across generations. Looking towards the future, we propose that this field stands to benefit from a prospective, three-generation approach. Specifically, following established prospective, longitudinal cohorts of children over their transition to parenting the next generation will afford the opportunity to investigate the developmental origins of intergenerational transmission. This approach also can address key …

Korean Newspapers And The “Irish Problem”: Japanese Censorship In Colonial Korea, 1920-1930, Jaehyun Kim
Student Work
Jaehyun Kim’s thesis, “Korean Newspapers and the ‘Irish Problem’: Japanese Censorship in Colonial Korea, 1920-1930,” touches upon a subject that scholars of colonial Korea have given insufficient attention to. Kim asks why there featured so many colonial Korean run newspaper articles on the Irish Independent movement in the 1920s and 1930s when the Japanese colonial government actively censored Korean newspapers. Indeed, in the wake of the March First Independent Movement, the colonial authorities shifted its harsh military rule to a more conciliatory cultural policy, allowing Koreans to vent their nationalistic sentiments within the confines of state control. However, the level …

The One-And-A-Half Chinas’ Problem: Taiwan And The Origins Of Peaceful Reunification, 1978–1988, Lucas Miner
Student Work
Lucas Miner’s thesis, “The One-and-a-Half Chinas’ Problem, Taiwan and the Origins of Peaceful Reunification, 1978–1988,” deals with attempts by the Chinese Communist Party and the Guomindang to achieve unification between the People’s Republic of China (PRC) and Taiwan during the early phase of China’s reform era. The thesis seeks to update our interpretation of Cross-Strait relations by exploring the origins of peaceful reunification, tracing its early evolution from 1978 to 1985. Primary sources from both sides of the strait—especially from the rich repository at the Academia Historica in Taipei—allows Miner to construct a nuanced and significant narrative that uniquely incorporates …

Social Reproduction On Campus: Quantitative Investigations Into The Reproduction Of Gender And Socioeconomic Inequality Through Higher Education, Ned William Tilbrook
Dissertations and Theses
This dissertation examines two key axes of inequality in higher education -- gender and socioeconomic status (SES) -- in terms of differences in college persistence and college major using the nationally-representative High School Longitudinal Study of 2009. While gender differences in terms of STEM majors has been oft-studied, this dissertation contributes to this body of literature by advancing Health & Social Sciences (HSS) majors as a separate category and examining the ways in which men and women may be sorted into these different types of major before and during college, despite the strong overlap in science and math related content. …
