The Zoning Board Of Appeals And Citizen Participation, Paul T. Prior
The Zoning Board Of Appeals And Citizen Participation, Paul T. Prior
Masters Theses
Chapter I
Introduction
Consistently increasing urbanization has been a salient characteristic of American society in the 20th Century. As more and more people have moved into cities, suburbs, and metropolitan areas, state and local governments have found it necessary to regulate the use of land through zoning legislation and zoning ordinances. New York City first enacted a comprehensive zoning ordinance in 1916.1 Since 1926, when the United States Supreme Court upheld the constitutionality of zoning ordinances in the landmark decision of Euclid v Amber Realty Co,2 virtually every urban area in the nation has been subjected to zoning.
The Role Of Need Assessment In The Community Mental Health System, William K. Redmon
The Role Of Need Assessment In The Community Mental Health System, William K. Redmon
Masters Theses
Introduction
The general purpose of the present paper is to analyze community mental health services in Michigan with respect to the responsiveness of the system to the target community. In order to accomplish this goal, several variables must be considered.
First, historical precedents of the current mental health system will be examined to determine the responsibilities of the system to the citizenry. Both legislative mandates and informal recommendations will be reviewed. Second, the methodologies available for community need assessment and citizen-system communication will be summarized in terms of their utility for increasing citizen control of service planning. Third, an actual …

An Exploratory Analysis Of Participation In The Laetrile Movement, Yvonne M. Vissing
Masters Theses
Chapter I
The Problem and Its Background
The Purpose
The purpose of this thesis is to examine factors leading individuals to participate in the laetrile movement. Laetrile, a substance obtained from a variety of foods including apricot kernels, has been termed by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to be both ineffective in the treatment of cancer, and even dangerous when taken in large amounts. Even so, over 50,000 people in the United States are estimated to use this substance for the control and prevention of cancer. They do so without the support of the orthodox medical profession, and may …
Awareness And Usage Of Community Mental Health Services By Chicanos: The Effect Of Assimilation And Social Stratification, Fernando Munoz
Awareness And Usage Of Community Mental Health Services By Chicanos: The Effect Of Assimilation And Social Stratification, Fernando Munoz
Masters Theses
This is a study of the utilization of community mental health services by the Chicano population in a Western Michigan community. As members of the second largest ethnic minority group in the United States, the Chicanos are faced with many of the same social ills that plague other minorities. Discrimination, benign neglect, oppression, exclusion by institutions, poverty, high crime rate, alcoholism, physical and emotional disorder, and social disorganization are part of the everyday world of the Chicano. The inherent cultural vehicles, which Chicano culture uses in order to deal with the stresses associated with these social pathologies, will be explored. …
Vegetational Communities On An Abandoned Farm In Van Buren County, Michigan, Larry G. Visser
Vegetational Communities On An Abandoned Farm In Van Buren County, Michigan, Larry G. Visser
Masters Theses
Introduction
Several studies have been made of xeric forests in southern Michigan which have developed through secondary succession following the cutting of the presettlement vegetation. Brewer et al. (1973) described such an area in Allegan County, Michigan which was dominated by presettlement pine and is now dominated by oak. The oak forests of the Harvey Ott Preserve in Calhoun County, Michigan have been described by Catana (1967). Studies of the oak forests in the Haven Hill area in southeastern Michigan have been made by Thompson (1953). In addition to these studies of xeric forests in southern Michigan, extensive studies of …

Climatic Change Considered As The Major Factor In The Abandonment Of The Grand Canyon Region, Paulette Fern Rayel
Masters Theses
Introduction
Grand Canyon National Park comprises 1009 square miles of contrasting life zones and landscapes, with elevations ranging from 2500 feet at the Colorado River to more than 9000 feet of the North Rim. This area includes 117 miles of the Canyon, part of the Kaibab Plateua known as the North Rim and part of the Coconino Plateau or South Rim. Both formations are included in the Colorado Plateau (See Figures 1 and 2).
Archaeological evidence indicates that prehistoric agriculturalists - the Cohonina peoples and later the Anasazi - resided in the area from circa A. D. 700 until A. …

An Exploratory Investigation Of The Relationship Between Personality And Intelligence With Community-Living And Institutionalized Elderly Females, Richard D. Stolp
An Exploratory Investigation Of The Relationship Between Personality And Intelligence With Community-Living And Institutionalized Elderly Females, Richard D. Stolp
Masters Theses
The Hand Test and the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale were administered to 25 institutionalized (Mage = 80.00) and 25 community-living (Mage = 72.92) elderly females to investigate personality differences between the two groups, and to explore the relationship between personality and intelligence in regard to the aged. It was discussed that the results of the present study should be interpreted with caution, since significant age and educational differences were found between the groups that may have contributed to the results. The hypothesis concerning greater personality deterioration in institutionalized subjects than in community-living subjects was given partial support inasmuch as depletion …

A Phonological And Morphological Analysis Of Two-Year Old Children's Utterances Of Final /S/ And /Z/ In Nouns, Janice Brewer
Masters Theses
The purpose of this study was to examine, from a phonological and morphological point of view, two-year old children's utterances of final /s/ and final /z/ in singular (CVC) and plural (CVCC) forms.
The subjects were 32 two-year old children who attended day-care centers. There were 13 males and 19 females, ranging in age from 26 months to 36 months, with an average age of 29 months.
In a 16 item test, each of the 32 children named eight singular nouns (/bʌs/, /haus/, /fers/, /maus/, /nouz/, /tʃiz/, /rouz/, /hous/) and eight plural nouns (/kʌps/, /hæts/, /keɪks/, /sɑks/, /bɔlz/, /gʌnz/, /bɛdz/, …
An Exploratory Study Of Black And White College Students On The Hand Test, Marie Clark
An Exploratory Study Of Black And White College Students On The Hand Test, Marie Clark
Masters Theses
In the past Blacks have not been used in the construction or development of norms for psychological tests, though they are routinely administered to Blacks. Several researchers have made an effort to determine whether tests which have been standardized on White subjects are applicable to Blacks (Megargee, 1966; Johnson & Sikes, 1965; Mussen, 1953). These authors found that differences in personality of Blacks and Whites on personality tests should not be used to make inferences unless the two groups are matched on a number of prominent variables.
In general, the research suggests that there are significant differences between Black and …
The Relationship Between Empathy And Socially Deviant Behaviors In Delinquent Adolescents, Terrie L. Fisk
The Relationship Between Empathy And Socially Deviant Behaviors In Delinquent Adolescents, Terrie L. Fisk
Masters Theses
Past research has demonstrated that empathy, traditionally defined as the ability to discriminate, label and then experience the emotional response of another, acts as an inhibitor of aggressive behavior. Additional evidence has shown an increase in empathic functioning can be the result of various empathy training strategies. It has recently been hypothesized that aggressive behavior might be decreased as empathic functioning increases. The present study sought to determine if an inverse relationship existed between empathy and socially deviant behavior, which is a less extreme degree of aggression characterized by disruptiveness and attention seeking. In addition, it was hypothesized that if …
A Survey Of Sex Typing On Prime Time Television, Patricia Sue Henry
A Survey Of Sex Typing On Prime Time Television, Patricia Sue Henry
Masters Theses
According to former FCC Commissioner Nicholas Johnson, the average child will spend nearly 25,000 hours in front of a television before he or she is eighteen years old. With this fact in mind, I wondered what America's children learn from watching prime time television regarding sex-typing, or the characteristics which are considered appropriately masculine or feminine.
A review of related literature showed that critics in the early 70s pointed out that women portrayed on television were less numerous than men, less intelligent, brave, and adventuresome. In short, women were stereotyped as supportive underlings.
To find out if women fared any …

Chapter 2 includes the coaching eras of Guy Lowry (1917-1924), …
A Cross-Cultural Study Of Client's Expectations And Preferences Of Directive Vs. Nondirective Counseling Approaches, Ching-Chuen Chan
A Cross-Cultural Study Of Client's Expectations And Preferences Of Directive Vs. Nondirective Counseling Approaches, Ching-Chuen Chan
Masters Theses
Theoretical and data based research has suggested that clients' expectation of counselor and counseling approaches are important variables affecting the counseling procedures. Clients' preferences for different theoretically derived approach were also found to be important determinants of counseling outcome. However, little research has been done on the cross-cultural aspect of client's expectation and preferences regarding counseling. The present study examined and compared the differences of expectations and preferences of directive vs. nondirective approach between Chinese and American college students. It was hypothesized that the authoritarian upbringing of Chinese students would influence their preference and expectations of counseling in favor of …
Resettlement Problems Of Prisoners-Of-War Of The Japanese In World War Ii And The Chinese Communists In Korea, Allen Hanegan
Resettlement Problems Of Prisoners-Of-War Of The Japanese In World War Ii And The Chinese Communists In Korea, Allen Hanegan
Masters Theses
The readjustment problems that were encountered by the prisoners-of-war (POWs) were caused by their identification problems, the chief aspect of which was their defensive isolationism. These problems produced further difficulties for the individual POW in the behavioral category and for the entire POW group in their underlying distrust of the outside world. These also produced confused reactions, paranoid syndromes, and a lack of participation in military and civilian affairs, and were expressed in the POWs as fearful withdrawal and belligerent negation with anti-social overtones. These problems were more marked in the case of the Korean War prisoners than in the …
Handbook For The Champaign County Youth Detention Center, James A. Talley Jr.
Handbook For The Champaign County Youth Detention Center, James A. Talley Jr.
Masters Theses
This handbook was developed to serve the needs of the Champaign County Youth Detention Center and interested community members. It is also designed to serve as a guideline for future handbooks at the center and for other agencies which may require such a handbook. This handbook should eliminate any confusion concerning regulations and policy of the center and prove to be satisfactory replacement for single sheet information which was formerly used.
There was an apparent need for this handbook to replace the intake folder and thereby provide a more useful and meaningful method of transmitting vitally important information to concerned …
The Failure Of The Peaceful Road To Socialism: Chile 1970-1973, Trevor Andrew Iles
The Failure Of The Peaceful Road To Socialism: Chile 1970-1973, Trevor Andrew Iles
Masters Theses
On September 4, 1970 Salvador Allende became the first ever democratically elected Marxist president of Chile. In addition he headed a predominantly left-wing coalition government whose program entailed the achieving of socialism by peaceful means.
During the first six months of his administration Allende began to carry out a number of his policies in the areas of agrarian reform, nationalization of industries, and redistribution of income. These policies were populist in nature and succeeded in raising the level of support for the Unidad Popular government as shown by the results of the April 1971 Municipal elections. I argue that the …
Androgyny And Psychological Adjustment Of Heterosexual And Homosexual Women, Deborah R. Donison
Androgyny And Psychological Adjustment Of Heterosexual And Homosexual Women, Deborah R. Donison
Masters Theses
Early research on the study of lesbianism was largely psychoanalytically oriented and contended that homosexuality was a form of psychopathology. Many have found that female homosexuals have a deep sense of inferiority and suffer from neuroticism. Recent investigation however, indicates that this is not necessarily the case. It has now been found that lesbians are no more neurotic than female heterosexuals. Furthermore, several other investigators have found lesbians to be better adjusted, in some respects, than heterosexual women.
Such differences are accountable for a number of reasons including the use of nonpatient subjects, reduction in sampling errors and the use …
Personality Characteristics And Locus Of Control Of Asthmatic, Diabetic, And Chronic Renal Failure Children, Mary Margaret Dwyer
Personality Characteristics And Locus Of Control Of Asthmatic, Diabetic, And Chronic Renal Failure Children, Mary Margaret Dwyer
Masters Theses
Past research has demonstrated that there are personality differences between individuals suffering from chronic illnesses and those who are “healthy”. Personality correlates of chronically ill children have also been evidenced, especially regarding specific illnesses.
The present study sought to determine if children suffering from asthma, diabetes, and chronic renal failure exhibit personality characteristics unique to and/or common to these particular groups. A second objective was to determine if Asthmatic, Diabetic, and Chronic Renal Failure Children display a difference or commonality in locus of control expectancies.
Ten male and 13 female outpatients at the Pediatrics Clinic of Michael Reese Hospital and …
Interpersonal Communication As A Function Of Subject Representational Mode, Joseph Adrian Williams
Interpersonal Communication As A Function Of Subject Representational Mode, Joseph Adrian Williams
Masters Theses
The study investigated aspects of a communications model of psychotherapy advanced by Grinder and Bandler. Subjects were thirty male and female undergraduate introductory psychology students at Eastern Illinois University during the summer of 1977. The subjects ranked a set of tape recorded statements for "understandability". These statements were presented in visual, auditory, and kinesthetic representational modes. Subject ratings provided a measure of which representational modes communicated most effectively to them. Three independent judges rated transcripts of recorded samples of the subject's actual language usage to determine the representational modes utilized by the subjects. Analysis of the ratings resulted in a …
