A Study Of The Relationship Between Locus Of Control And The Use Of "I-Statements", Patricia Taglione Jan 1978

A Study Of The Relationship Between Locus Of Control And The Use Of "I-Statements", Patricia Taglione

Masters Theses

Gestalt therapy theory considers speech to be a reflection of one's personality, and consequently psychological adjustment or maladjustment is expected to be manifested in one's speech habits (Levitsky & Perls, 1970; Passons, 1975). The use of personal pronouns is an indicator of the psychological distance taken from one's own feelings and actions. Healthy speech, or speech that is integrated with one's feelings and actions, involves the use of the first person singular when referring to self. Working with people to change speech patterns (changing "it-statements" and "you-statements" to "I-statements") may help an individual integrate his speech with his feelings and …

Effect Of Sex, Input-Response Mode, And Mnemonics On Free Recall, John Thorne-Thomsen Jan 1978

Effect Of Sex, Input-Response Mode, And Mnemonics On Free Recall, John Thorne-Thomsen

Masters Theses

Thirty two males and thirty two females performed at a memorization task in which lists of words were presented either auditorially or visually. In addition to mode of presentation and sex, two other independent variables included mode of response; words being recalled by writing or orally repeating them, and mnemonic device effect; subjects being instructed to use bizarre images aide or repetition memory aide. No significant sex differences were found in this experiment. There was a significant mode of presentation effect in which subjects who heard the words recalled significantly more than subjects who saw the words. There was also …

Masters Theses

The study was to examine the types of stressful situations that graduate students encounter, to delineate styles for coping with these situations, and to determine if these coping styles affect academic achievement.

Three populations were used: Group I consisted of 22 graduates of the Clinical Psychology program at Eastern Illinois University (EIU), Group II consisted of 11 dropouts of the Clinical Psychology program, and Group III consisted of 23 currently-enrolled graduate students in the Psychology Department. It was anticipated that there would be a significant relationship between graduate students' coping styles and their academic achievement, and that Type I (competent) …

Petroleum As A Political Weapon In International Affairs: The Case Of Saudi Arabia, Momodou Abdou Rahman Jallow Jan 1978

Petroleum As A Political Weapon In International Affairs: The Case Of Saudi Arabia, Momodou Abdou Rahman Jallow

Masters Theses

This study seeks to analyze the role of oil in Saudi Arabia's foreign policy. In 1973 Saudi Arabia and other Arab nations successfully used their oil resources to apply pressure on the United States of America to modify her strong support of the State of Israel. Saudi Arabia played a significant role in the 1973 oil embargo. This thesis will examine Saudi Arabia's role in the 1973-74 Arab oil embargo, and what prompted her participation, considering the fact that she is less radical than most of her Arab neighbors. The 1973 oil embargo was more successful than for example the …

A Pilot Study Of A Sex Education Program In A Sheltered Workshop Using A Cognitive-Behavioral Model Based On Rational Emotive Therapy, Jacqueline A. Rieck, Thomas E. Frederick Jan 1978

A Pilot Study Of A Sex Education Program In A Sheltered Workshop Using A Cognitive-Behavioral Model Based On Rational Emotive Therapy, Jacqueline A. Rieck, Thomas E. Frederick

Masters Theses

This pilot study was developed to teach people with mental retardation about their own sexuality, appropriate community behaviors, and to develop within them a basic sense of responsibility for their own actions. Problems in social/sexual behaviors have been consistently quoted as reasons for high recidivism rates, as well as difficulties in community living, vocational placement, and other generalized stereotypes about mental retardation. Often the public remains uninformed about, does not recognize, and/or feels that sexual rights for people with any mental differences should not exist. Additionally, when any form of sexuality was expressed by such people it resulted in shock …

Irrationalism In Affective And Cognitive Personality Types, Steven F. Mcarthur Jan 1978

Irrationalism In Affective And Cognitive Personality Types, Steven F. Mcarthur

Masters Theses

Psychologists generally consider personality to be a collection of characteristics and traits. These characteristics are manifested through two domains: affect (emotion) and cognition (thinking). Evidence has shown affect and cognition to be closely related.

Psychotherapy modalities can be categorized along a continuum, from highly rational and logical (cognitive) on one end, to highly affective on the other.

The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between cognitively and affectively oriented persons and irrational thoughts or ideas as defined by a highly rational therapy modality (Rational-Emotive Therapy) in an effort to determine a treatment of choice for these persons. …

The Effect Of Withdrawal From The Negative Cue On Learning A Simultaneous Discrimination, Carl Merle Johnson Dec 1977

The Effect Of Withdrawal From The Negative Cue On Learning A Simultaneous Discrimination, Carl Merle Johnson

Masters Theses

Three groups of rats learned a black-white discrimination in a Grice box. All subjects were reinforced with food pellets for correct choices. No-Retrace subjects were confined in the negative goal box after errors. Retrace subjects were allowed to withdraw after errors from the negative goal box to the choice point or start box. Take-Out subjects were manually removed from the goal box during errors immediately after inspecting the empty food dish. All subjects were trained to a criterion and then reversal training was instituted. Retrace subjects learned the original discrimination significantly slower than either No-Retrace or Take-Out subjects, which did …

An Analysis Of The European Artifacts From Chota-Tanasee, An Eighteenth Century Overhill Cherokee Town, Robert Dolan Newman Dec 1977

An Analysis Of The European Artifacts From Chota-Tanasee, An Eighteenth Century Overhill Cherokee Town, Robert Dolan Newman

Masters Theses

Description and analysis of over 67,000 European artifacts and aboriginally modified European artifacts from Chota-Tanasee (40MR2-40MR62) provides a basis for future studies of similar European artifacts from Overhill Cherokee sites in the Little Tennessee Valley.

Dated European artifacts provided a means to construct a chronology of features and burials. Only 40 of 1086 features and two of 114 burials were dated to one of four periods of European economic and political influence. Thirty features and one burial date to the Colonial period corroborating accounts of Chota-Tanasee's size and importance during the mid-18th century. Too few features and burials date to …

An Analysis Of East Tennessee Dalton Projectile Points, Wayne D. Roberts Dec 1977

An Analysis Of East Tennessee Dalton Projectile Points, Wayne D. Roberts

Masters Theses

East Tennessee projectile points, previously described as the Early Woodland period Candy Creek type, are analyzed. Through the intensive examination of 17 continuous attributes and three discrete attributes reflecting morphology, function and manufacturing techniques, 112 of these East Tennessee projectile points are compared with 46 Dalton and Quad projectile points from northern Alabama and 37 Hardaway-Dalton projectile points from the Piedmont of North Carolina. As a result of the observations and a linear discriminant function program, it is determined that the Candy Creek projectile point is a regional variant of the Dalton projectile point type. Dalton manifestations described in the …

Sexual Differences, Fluctuating Asymmetry And Their Implications In The Growth Rate And Developmental Stability Of The Permanent Dentition And The Primary Dermal Ridge Of The Fingers And Palms, Robert S. Webb Dec 1977

Sexual Differences, Fluctuating Asymmetry And Their Implications In The Growth Rate And Developmental Stability Of The Permanent Dentition And The Primary Dermal Ridge Of The Fingers And Palms, Robert S. Webb

Masters Theses

This study presents evidence that specific genetic material influences the growth rate and developmental stability of two genetic systems, dermal ridges and permanent dentition, having mutually exclusive developmental periods. Dermal ridges develop rapidly early in fetal life, while the permanent dentition develops slowly in a postnatal environment. Theories centering on the nature and effects of the specific genetic material (heterochromatin) are discussed and applied whenever possible.

The data for this investigation were collected from students in introductory anthropology classes at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. The sample consists of fifty males and fifty females. Finger prints, palm prints and casts …

A Study Of The Effects Of Syllable Releasing And Arresting Function On The Correct Articulation Of /S/ By Normal And Articulatory Defective Children, John Carlton Pennington

Masters Theses

The purpose of this study was two-fold: (1) to investigate the effects of syllable releasing and arresting function on correct /s/ productions by normal and articulatory defective children; and (2) to investigate the effects of different phonetic environments on correct /s/ productions in syllable releasing and arresting positions by normal and articulatory defective children.

Two groups of five-year-old children, 15 with normal articulation and 15 with defective articulation, were selected as subjects in this study and met the following criteria: normal hearing, normal intelligence, no significant deviation in the structure and/or function of the oral mechanism, and no more than …
