The Rescue Of The Danish Jews: Moral Courage Under Stress, Leo Goldberger, Editor, Gerald Rasmussen, Reviewer Jan 1990

The Rescue Of The Danish Jews: Moral Courage Under Stress, Leo Goldberger, Editor, Gerald Rasmussen, Reviewer

The Bridge

We enthusiastically recommend a new book about the rescue of the Danish Jews during the Second World War. In fact, that is the name of the book: Rescue of the Danish Jews: Moral Courage under Stress. It was edited by Leo Goldberger and published by the New York University Press in 1987.

Several books have been written about this event, but they are not well known. These include monographs, first hand accounts and at least one historical novel.

Reception Of English Law In Singapore: Problems And Proposed Solutions, Andrew B.L. Phang Jan 1990

Reception Of English Law In Singapore: Problems And Proposed Solutions, Andrew B.L. Phang

Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law

The problems pertaining to the reception of English law in Singapore are both numerous and complex. The academic literature generated in the local sphere alone is relatively large. It must, however, be conceded that, from apractical point of view, there has been very little interest or at least discussion. One cannot, of course, be sure about this observation, save for the very strong indication that takes the form of the overwhelming lack of litigation in the area, thus rendering it merely (so it appears) an academic monopoly. It should, however, be pointed out that this rather phlegmatic approach in practice …

Serial Conditioning As A Function Of Stimulus, Response, And Temporal Dependencies, William L. Palya, Rick A. Bevins Jan 1990

Serial Conditioning As A Function Of Stimulus, Response, And Temporal Dependencies, William L. Palya, Rick A. Bevins

Research, Publications & Creative Work

Six experiments were used to examine the effects of explicit response, stimulus, and temporal dependencies on responding in an interfood interval. The first two experiments demonstrated that 10- segment 60-s interfood clocks controlled similar distributions of key pecking in pigeons regardless of whether response-reinforcement contiguity was required, allowed, or precluded. The third and fourth experiments found that in the absence of an explicit response-reinforcement dependency, systematic explicit stimuli in an interfood interval were sufficient to establish and maintain the characteristic distribution of key pecking and that an interval without an explicit clock failed to establish or maintain key pecking. The …

Short Subjects: Moving, Todd Ellison Jan 1990

Short Subjects: Moving, Todd Ellison

Provenance, Journal of the Society of Georgia Archivists

We all move; about twenty million Americans traded places last year. Most of them trucked the furniture themselves. Archivists delight in moving no more than the next person, but their professional training and experience prepares them better than does probably anyone else's. Whether they implement their knowledge is another matter; this article describes the ideal.

Short Subjects: Georgia Ghosts, Or Where Are They Now?: One Researcher's Catalog Of Georgia's Missing Historical Records, Robert S. Davis Jr.

Provenance, Journal of the Society of Georgia Archivists

Ghosts haunt places like attics, old barns, and university libraries. They live in the minds of researchers seeking in frustration that missing document, pamphlet, or book mentioned in an earlier source. Even when the text of a document has survived in some form, researchers sometimes have gone to great lengths to find the original manuscript for the assurance that nothing more can be found there.

Animal Rights Vs. Humanism: The Charge Of Speciesism, Kenneth J. Shapiro Jan 1990

Animal Rights Vs. Humanism: The Charge Of Speciesism, Kenneth J. Shapiro

Animal Welfare Collection

The present article examines a concern I have had for some time about the compatibility of humanistic psychology with the emerging animal rights movement. Beyond working out my position, the paper has the additional educational and, frankly, political purpose of bringing animal rights issues to the attention of humanistic psychologists.

The article applies certain concepts of contemporary animal rights philosophy, notably "speciesism," to both the philosophy of humanism and humanistic psychology. While on a philosophical level, certain concepts are discussed that would likely block a rapprochement, I feel that humanistic psychologists as individuals are likely to extend their compassion to …

Estimating Nest Success: When Mayfield Wins, Douglas H. Johnson, Terry L. Shaffer Jan 1990

Estimating Nest Success: When Mayfield Wins, Douglas H. Johnson, Terry L. Shaffer

United States Geological Survey, Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center: Publications

The Apparent estimator of nest success may be severely biased because unsuccessful nests are less likely to be found than are successful nests. The Mayfield estimator is a preferred alternative. The situation is somewhat different for nests in colonies or on islands because of greater visibility of nests, higher synchrony of nesting, and often higher hatch rates than dispersed mainland nests. Also, destruction is more likely to occur catastrophically, which violates an assumption of the Mayfield method that the mortality rate is constant. By simulation we investigated the performance of the Apparent and Mayfield estimators under a variety of circumstances. …

Conditioning Of Sandhill Cranes During Fall Migration, Gary L. Krapu, Douglas H. Johnson Jan 1990

Conditioning Of Sandhill Cranes During Fall Migration, Gary L. Krapu, Douglas H. Johnson

United States Geological Survey, Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center: Publications

Body mass of adult female and male sandhill cranes (Grus canadensis) increased an average of 17 and 20%, respectively, from early September to late October on staging areas in central North Dakota and varied by year. Increases in body mass averaged 550 and 681 g among female and male G. c. canadensis, respectively, and 616 and 836 g among female and male G. c. rowani. Adult and juvenile G. c. rowani were lean at arrival, averaging 177 and 83 g of fat, respectively, and fat reserves increased to 677 and 482 g by mid-October. Fat-free dry …

Remarks Prepared For Delivery By Clayton Yeutter Secretary Of Agriculture To The Chicago Farmers, Clayton K. Yeutter

Clayton K. Yeutter, United States Secretary of Agriculture: Papers

It's a great pleasure for me to be back in Chicago, especially when it means seeing so many friends and acquaintances. I'd like to thank The Chicago Farmers for extending to me this invitation to talk with you today about America's agricultural future. As you know, Congress is struggling to resolve differences between their respective versions of the 1990 Farm Bill. What you may not know -- and what I'd like to discuss with you today -- is that in several notable instances neither version reflects what America's farmers have asked for, nor what America's farmers, as well as America's …

Remarks Prepared For Delivery By Secretary Of Agriculture Clayton Yeutter To The American Chamber Of Commerce, Clayton K. Yeutter

Clayton K. Yeutter, United States Secretary of Agriculture: Papers

Most Americans won't ever forget -- and I certainly won't -- the news photos taken of the destruction of the Berlin Wall. But even as this political wall was toppling, other walls were going up, ever higher, around the world. I am talking about economic walls -- the subsidies, import bans, price supports, and other policies - which are distorting, and threatening to destroy, the world's agricultural trade.

Remarks Prepared For Delivery To The Journal Of Commerce And The National Foreign Trade Council's Uruguay Round Conference By Secretary Of Agriculture Clayton Yeutier, Clayton K. Yeutter

Clayton K. Yeutter, United States Secretary of Agriculture: Papers

It is time to quit pretending that supply management works as a farm income enhancement program. It may in the short run; it doesn't in the long run. It is time to stop pretending that protectionist trade policies help America's agriculture. They may in the short run; they don't in the long run.

Remarks Prepared For Delivery To The Organization For Economic Cooperation And Development Ministerial Meeting By U.S. Secretary Of Agriculture Clayton Yeuiter, Clayton K. Yeutter

Clayton K. Yeutter, United States Secretary of Agriculture: Papers

This is a particularly important time for us to be gathering for this Ministerial meeting. The Uruguay Round of negotiations under the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT) is entering a crucial period. It is imperative that the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) make a strong statement of support for freer and fairer trade in all fields, including agriculture. The nations of the world are looking to the OECD to clearly point the way toward an improved world trading system.

Remarks Prepared For Delivery To The International Office Of Epizootics By U.S. Secretary Of Agriculture Clayton Yeutter, Clayton K. Yeutter

Clayton K. Yeutter, United States Secretary of Agriculture: Papers

It is a pleasure for me to be with you today at the annual meeting of the International Office of Epizootics. I would first like to congratulate the recipients of your gold and silver awards, which I am sure are well-deserved. I also want to state how much the United States has appreciated the efforts of Director-General Blajan. Although we have only been a member of OlE since 1978, we have developed great respect for this organization. OlE is held in high regard throughout the world, and the firm and competent leadership of Dr. Blajan has been a major reason …

"Trade Reform, The Key To The Future Of U.S. Farming", Clayton K. Yeutter Jan 1990

"Trade Reform, The Key To The Future Of U.S. Farming", Clayton K. Yeutter

Clayton K. Yeutter, United States Secretary of Agriculture: Papers

I have been asked innumerable times why world agricultural trade reform is so important to U.S. farmers. Some of the people doing the asking are often afraid of what such reform might mean to U.S. agriculture. A question I occasionally ask back is, "What is there to fear?" If we are the efficient agricultural producers we say we are -- and I believe we are - then the Uruguay Round of the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT) offers American farmers an unprecedented opportunity to gain market share in the growing world markets for food. American agriculture has not …

Cb President Bush's "America The Beautiful Initiative" At The White House Remarks By President Bush And Secretary Of Agriculture Clayton Yeutter, Clayton K. Yeutter

Clayton K. Yeutter, United States Secretary of Agriculture: Papers

SEC. YEUTTER: Good morning, ladies and gentlemen, and welcome to this auspicious tree-planting ceremony. We're delighted to have you all here. That's quite a tree that we're going to be planting. I'm not sure we're going to get that job done with two shovels, but maybe that depends on how fast people shovel. At any rate, we'll give you some experience in that regard very shortly. As we begin the program, I'd like to spend just two minutes giving the essence of what the morning's activity is about. Then, I'll introduce some of our special guests here, and then, of …
