Scientists And Animal Research: Dr. Jekyll Or Mr. Hyde?, Andrew N. Rowan Oct 1995

Scientists And Animal Research: Dr. Jekyll Or Mr. Hyde?, Andrew N. Rowan

Experimentation Collection

Why is the public so sensitive about the use of a few tens of millions of animals in research when they do not object to killing hundreds of millions of pigs and cows and billions of chickens for our meat diet? Why is animal research considered so bad despite the public's high opinion of science (and scientists)? Perhaps it is the image of the scientist as an objective and cold individual who deliberately inflicts harm (pain, distress, or death) on his (the public image is usually male) innocent animal victims that arouses so much horror and concern. This paper does …

Evaluation Of Animal Welfare By The Self-Expression Of An Anxiety State, M. P. Carey, J. P. Fry

Assessment of Animal Welfare Collection

Although mental well-being has long been accepted as an important aspect of animal welfare, the subjective feelings of farm or laboratory animals are regarded as lying beyond the scope of scientific enquiry. We now report that pharmacological conditioning of pigs with a drug, pentylenetetrazole, known to induce anxiety in man, permits investigation of the presence or absence of this psychological state during exposure to a variety of environmental stimuli encountered during normal husbandry. Such pharmacological conditioning therefore provides a valuable means to assess and improve elements of animal welfare and should be applicable to other species that show operant behaviour.

Rare Books & Special Collections Publications

This exhibit marks the bicentenary of the Victorian writer Thomas Carlyle and showcases the University of South Carolina's outstanding collection of Carlyle's works, formed by Professor Rodger L. The exhibit includes Carlyle's work in mathematics, German literature, social analysis, satire, …

A Study Of Women's Compliance-Gaining Behaviors In Violent And Non-Violent Relationships, Jill E. Rudd, Patricia A. Burant Oct 1995

A Study Of Women's Compliance-Gaining Behaviors In Violent And Non-Violent Relationships, Jill E. Rudd, Patricia A. Burant

Communication Faculty Publications

Recent research by communication scholars has investigated the dynamics of abusive spousal relationships (Chandler, 1986; Infante, Chandler, & Rudd, 1989; Infante, Chandler-Sabourin, Rudd, & Shannon, 1990; Rancer & Niemasz, 1988; Rudd, Burant, & Beatty, 1994; Sabourin, Infante, & Rudd, 1993). Infante and his colleagues have suggested that those involved in violent relationships communicate differently with their partners than those involved in nonviolent relationships. Based on this prior research, it seems important for communication scholars to further investigate the communication behaviors of individuals involved in violent relationships. This current study seeks to advance the family violence research by comparing the types …

Research and Training Center - Focal Point

Men are increasingly discovering the many joys of active involvement in their children's lives. The special bond between father and child produces measurable, positive effects in regards to a child's self-esteem, gender identity, intellectual growth, curiosity and social skills. Current literature increasingly portrays dads as caretakers, supportive, sensitive and caring. However, this enhanced involvement can be sorely tested when a child has a disability or chronic illness. The dreams fathers have for their child's life, educational, athletic and vocational achievements are threatened.

The Effect Of Gender And Age On Ppst Performance In An Urban Teacher Education Program, Judith Harrington Oct 1995

The Effect Of Gender And Age On Ppst Performance In An Urban Teacher Education Program, Judith Harrington

Counseling Faculty Publications

This study examined PPST scores for 318 College of Education students in a midsized, midwestern, urban university. Factors of gender and age were used to compare performance on the three PPST subtests of Reading, Writing and Mathematics. Findings tended to support some gender-stereotypical beliefs with regard to math and verbal abilities. The study's findings did not support the often perceived belief that traditional students outperform nontraditional students. Inferences for urban colleges of Education are discussed.

Assessing Fundamental Power Differences In Exchange Networks: Iterative Gpi, Michael J. Lovaglia, John Skvoretz, Barry N. Markovsky, David Willer Oct 1995

Assessing Fundamental Power Differences In Exchange Networks: Iterative Gpi, Michael J. Lovaglia, John Skvoretz, Barry N. Markovsky, David Willer

Faculty Publications

Networks have been discovered for which Network Exchange Theory (NET Markovsky, Willer and Patton 1988; Lovaglia, Skvoretz, Willer and Markovsky 1995) fails to provide tenable predictions. Here we elaborate NET to create a more general method. We show not only when and where exchange networks break into simpler substructures, but propose rules to decisively classify networks and substructures as strong, weak, or equal power. In doing so, we advance general heuristics for power development in exchange networks and demonstrate the promise of an approach using reciprocal comparison of general heuristics, formal theory, and computer simulation.

Review Of Economic Adaptation: Alternatives For Nonmetropolitan Areas By David L. Barkley, Richard L. Meile Oct 1995

Review Of Economic Adaptation: Alternatives For Nonmetropolitan Areas By David L. Barkley, Richard L. Meile

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences

The purpose of David L. Barkley's edited work is to examine critically the policy and practice of rural economic development in the United States during the last quarter century. To that end Barkley has brought together leading economists, regional scientists, and several sociologists to review and evaluate the current status of rural economic development.

Many of the contributors to the volume, especially Professors Lobao and Summers, allude to the significance of a globalized economy to development in non-metropolitan areas of the country. The volume shows, to paraphrase Lobao, that strategies focusing on recapitalizing rural communities do not work everywhere or …

Review Of Roadside History Of South Dakota By Linda Hasselstrom, Darrell Napton Oct 1995

Review Of Roadside History Of South Dakota By Linda Hasselstrom, Darrell Napton

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences

The best parts of this book are the introductions to South Dakota and to each of the four regions into which Hasselstrom divides the state. In these sixty pages, she distills the state's history and cultural geography. Linda Hasselstrom is one of South Dakota's most accomplished native writers. Her writing is clean and easy to read. She explains what it is to be South Dakotan as only a native could, but retains the ability to step back and see the state objectively.

Intended for an audience of armchair travelers, vacationers, and casual history buffs, the book is organized around four …
