Analyzing The Evolution Of Class I Ltl Motor Carriers: An Examination Of Expansion Into Warehousing, Joe B. Hanna, Arnold B. Maltz Sep 2000

Analyzing The Evolution Of Class I Ltl Motor Carriers: An Examination Of Expansion Into Warehousing, Joe B. Hanna, Arnold B. Maltz

Journal of Transportation Management

The current research uses Porter’s differentiation strategy framework to examine Class I LTL motor carrier service expansion habits over the last twenty years. The examination focuses on carriers bundling transportation and warehousing services together to help differentiate their service offerings from competitors. Results indicate that carriers are expanding service offerings to include warehousing services and are providing significant value-added services to customers. Continuous growth in warehouse service expansion was evident from passage of the Motor Carrier Act of 1980 to the mid-90’s.

The Impact Of State Taxes On The Development And Growth Of The Trucking Industry, Thomas Lambert, Hokey Min Sep 2000

The Impact Of State Taxes On The Development And Growth Of The Trucking Industry, Thomas Lambert, Hokey Min

Journal of Transportation Management

The presence of certain state taxes is believed to have a negative impact on truck registration and the location decisions of trucking firms. For example, in a metropolitan area that covers two or more states, a trucking firm might not choose to locate in the county that is in close proximity to the metropolitan area’s business districts, population centers, and largest concentration of customers, if that county is in a state that imposes the taxes. Instead, it might choose to locate in a county that belongs to another state that does not impose such taxes as long as that county …

Long-Term Outcomes Of An Abstinence-Based, Small-Group Pregnancy Prevention Program In New York City Schools, Lisa D. Lieberman, Heather Gray, Megan Wier, Renee Fiorentino, Patricia Maloney Sep 2000

Long-Term Outcomes Of An Abstinence-Based, Small-Group Pregnancy Prevention Program In New York City Schools, Lisa D. Lieberman, Heather Gray, Megan Wier, Renee Fiorentino, Patricia Maloney

Department of Public Health Scholarship and Creative Works

Context: Despite drops in U.S. teenage birthrates, questions continue to arise about how best to reduce the country's adolescent birthrate. School-based programs continue to be considered one of the best ways to reach adolescents at risk of early sexual activity.

Methods: A total of 312 students completed a pretest, a posttest and a follow-up one year after the posttest: 125 who had participated in a 3-4-month-long abstinence-based small-group intervention led by trained social workers, and 187 in a comparison group that received no special services.

Results: There were few significant differences between the intervention and comparison groups at posttest. At …

Maine Folklife Center Newsletter

We recently completed the NEH sponsored preservation of endangered tape recordings. Over the course of the two-year grant period we built and equipped a first-class sound lab and copied over 600 hours of audio tape-recorded material to high quality preservation master reels — over 250 hours of which were also copied to public-access CD-Rs. We also expanded and standardized our finding aides for these accessions, which are among the oldest and most valuable in our collection. Now that we have the equipment and necessary procedures in place, we will continue the preservation program as part of our regular work load. …

Diversity Of Behaviour During Novel Object Tests Is Reduced In Pigs Housed In Substrate-Impoverished Conditions, Françoise Wemelsfelder, Marie Haskell, Michael T. Mendl, Sheena Calvert, Alistair B. Lawrence Sep 2000

Diversity Of Behaviour During Novel Object Tests Is Reduced In Pigs Housed In Substrate-Impoverished Conditions, Françoise Wemelsfelder, Marie Haskell, Michael T. Mendl, Sheena Calvert, Alistair B. Lawrence

Sentience Collection

Modern intensive farming conditions lack the diversity of substrates present in more natural environments and offer young animals fewer opportunities for interaction. Evidence exists that this may affect the organization of interactive patterns of behaviour, but shifts in behavioural diversity have not been measured directly. We investigated the effect of the substrate in the home pen on the diversity of behaviour in young growing pigs, Sus scrofa. Over 5 months, 26 pigs were housed singly in either substrate-impoverished (SI) or substrate-enriched (SE) conditions. Once every month we recorded the behaviour of these pigs in detail both in the home pens …

Urban Violence Among African American Males: Integrating Family, Neighborhood, And Peer Perspectives, M. Daniel Bennett Jr., Mark W. Fraser Sep 2000

Urban Violence Among African American Males: Integrating Family, Neighborhood, And Peer Perspectives, M. Daniel Bennett Jr., Mark W. Fraser

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

Even though rates have declined in recent years, violence is a serious problem in many American cities. This paper reviews recent perspectives on violence among young, urban African American males. Special attention is afforded the "father absent" hypothesis, the effect of poverty, the character of neighborhoods, the roots of self-efficacy, and peer influence, particularly the influence of street codes. The latter are argued both to regulate some situational behavior and to promote the use of violence in disputes over social status, drugs, and money. The authors discuss implications for policy and community development.

The Use Of Edi And Internet Technologies In The U.S. Motor Carrier Industry, Richard L. Clarke Sep 2000

The Use Of Edi And Internet Technologies In The U.S. Motor Carrier Industry, Richard L. Clarke

Journal of Transportation Management

Computer to computer data exchange by companies in a supply chain have been wellrecognized as an effective means of reducing cost and decreasing paperwork errors. In many cases, manufacturers, wholesalers, and retailers have become electronically linked to better manage inventory, ordering, and billing information. However, supply chains, by definition, also include common carriers that move goods between supply chain partners but may not have a long-term relationship with either the shipper or his customers. This could be the missing or weak link in an otherwise effective supply chain. The purpose of this paper is to examine the state-of-the-art of EDI …

The Relationship Between The Functional Orientation Of Senior Managers And Service Quality In Ltl Motor Carriers, Patricia M. Poli, Carl A. Scheraga Sep 2000

The Relationship Between The Functional Orientation Of Senior Managers And Service Quality In Ltl Motor Carriers, Patricia M. Poli, Carl A. Scheraga

Journal of Transportation Management

This study utilizes data envelopment analysis to examine the relationship between the functional heterogeneity of senior LTL motor carrier managers’ departmental positions and the relative efficiency of their companies in the production of quality customer service. Three measures from the Quest for Quality annual survey are utilized to measure customer satisfaction: on-time performance, value, and customer service. It is shown that data envelopment analysis can be used to assist LTL motor carriers in benchmarking the configuration of their managerial hierarchies against their peers in order to achieve the goal of customer satisfaction. The results of the present study confirm that …

An Evaluation Of Liner Strategies In The Context Of Contemporary Supply Chain Management Practices, Shashi Kumar Sep 2000

An Evaluation Of Liner Strategies In The Context Of Contemporary Supply Chain Management Practices, Shashi Kumar

Journal of Transportation Management

Academic researchers published a sophisticated model of world class logistics in 1995 and recently updated it with a model of 21st century logistics. Although such practices are yet to be perfected in the real world, it provides a yardstick for measuring logistical excellence. An innovative world class firm will pursue sustainable competitive advantage through wellintegrated global supply chains. As liner operators are vital members of global supply chains, their contemporary strategies need particular scrutiny to identify elements of congruence or non-congruence. The paper discusses generic liner strategies and identifies the ideal strategy congruent with contemporary supply chain management practices.

Rights And Obligations Of Third Parties, Aristides N. Hatzis Sep 2000

Rights And Obligations Of Third Parties, Aristides N. Hatzis

Aristides N. Hatzis

Three different issues, related to third party involvement in a contractual relationship, are examined. The first two (assignment of contractual rights/delegation of contractual duties and third-party beneficiary contracts) are examined in a unified way. After pointing to the striking similarity between beneficiary and assignment contracts, we discuss the non-simultaneous assent argument, the danger of creating open classes of beneficiaries without the intention of the contracting parties, and other problems. In a second part, we deal with the controversial issue of efficient breach due to inducement by a third party. After reviewing the literature, we briefly consider the use of liquidated …
