The Political Economy Of Social Security, Georges Casamatta, Helmuth Cremer, Pierre Pestieau Sep 2000

The Political Economy Of Social Security, Georges Casamatta, Helmuth Cremer, Pierre Pestieau

Georges Casamatta

We consider a two-period overlapping generations model in which individual voters differ by age and by productivity. In such a setting, a redistributive pay-as-you-go system is politically sustainable, even when the interest rate is higher than the rate of population growth. The workers with medium wages (not those with the lowest wages) and the retirees form a majority which votes for a positive level of social security. This level depends on the difference between the rates of population growth and interest as well as on the redistributiveness of the benefit rule.

A Multilevel Model Of Client Participation In Intensive Family Preservation Services, Julia H. Littell, E. A. Tajima Sep 2000

A Multilevel Model Of Client Participation In Intensive Family Preservation Services, Julia H. Littell, E. A. Tajima

Graduate School of Social Work and Social Research Faculty Research and Scholarship

We identify two distinct components of parent participation in intensive family preservation services: collaboration in treatment planning and compliance with program expectations. Using hierarchical linear models, we explore influences on collaboration and compliance at the case, worker, and program levels. Effects of cross-level interactions are also examined. Parental substance abuse, mental health problems, minority status, and lack of extended family support predict lower levels of participation. Workers' perceptions of their clients and of their own working conditions appear to influence client participation. Program factors matter as well, although some operate in tandem with case characteristics and worker perceptions.

Race, Class, And Support For Egalitarian Statism Among The African American Middle Class, George Wilson Sep 2000

Race, Class, And Support For Egalitarian Statism Among The African American Middle Class, George Wilson

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

This study uses data from the 1990 and 1987 years of the General Social Survey to assess the effects of minority status and position in the class structure in explaining middle class African Americans' support for opportunity-enhancing and outcome-based egalitarian statist policies. Findings do not provide confirmation for prior research that has found that racial effects are predominant, but has considered a more narrow range of policies and not assessed interaction effects. First, neither additive nor interactive effects of race and social class explain support for government policies that are premised on providing people with skills to compete in the …

Accountability, Democracy And The World Economic Forum, Jane Andrew

Faculty of Commerce - Papers (Archive)

Concerns about the state of the global environment has provided the catalyst for significant participation in 'anti-globalisation' protests. These concerns have led many to protest the general lack of social and environmental accountability displayed by multinational companies and elected government officials. This paper considers these issues within the context of a growing protest movement.

Nationalgalerie Berlin: Catalogue Of Painting And Sculptures (Review), Elizabeth Mckeigue Sep 2000

Nationalgalerie Berlin: Catalogue Of Painting And Sculptures (Review), Elizabeth Mckeigue

Staff publications, research, and presentations

For scholars and students of modem German art, the Nationalgalerie: Catalogue of Painting and Sculptures on CD-ROM is an excellent means of learning about this museum's collection without having to go all the way to Berlin.

This disc presents in electronic form the complete catalog of the collection of 19th- and 20th-century art in the Nationalgalerie Berlin. While the Nationalgalerie's collection shows a predictable emphasis on German artists, it includes a wide variety of other European artists as well. The disc also catalogs for the first time works confiscated and lost by the museum during World War II. Entries for …

The Impact Of Sexism On Older Women's Mental And Physical Health, Kelli Lynn Mcswan Sep 2000

The Impact Of Sexism On Older Women's Mental And Physical Health, Kelli Lynn Mcswan

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Research has demonstrated that discrimination accounts for a statistically significant portion of the variance in women’s reported physical and mental symptoms above and beyond that accounted for by generic stressors. Furthermore, the literature suggests that discrimination in the elderly has lead to inadequate medical care as well as psychological and physical problems. Relatively little is known, however, about the degree to which older women perceive or experience sexism. This study investigated whether or not elderly women experience sexism and the impact it may have on their mental and physical health.

Assessment Of Religious Motivation And Its Effects On Health Related Behaviors, John Austin Davis Sep 2000

Assessment Of Religious Motivation And Its Effects On Health Related Behaviors, John Austin Davis

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The belief that one’s religious behavior can influence health, either by formal offerings to religious shamans or the uttering of a prayer to an unseen deity, likely predates recorded history and finds its most basic beliefs expressed in Exodus 15:26, “I will put none of the diseases upon you which I put upon the Egyptians; for I am the Lord, your healer.” Findings and observations published in the late 1970’s and early 1980’s that some of the membership among the more conservative denominations with strict proscriptions regarding health behavior experience lower rates of cancer and heart disease supported this belief, …

Global Games: Theory And Applications, Stephen Morris, Hyun Song Shin Sep 2000

Global Games: Theory And Applications, Stephen Morris, Hyun Song Shin

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

Global games are games of incomplete information whose type space is determined by the players each observing a noisy signal of the underlying state. With strategic complementarities, global games often have a unique, dominance solvable equilibrium, allowing analysis of a number of economic models of coordination failure. For symmetric binary action global games, equilibrium strategies in the limit (as noise becomes negligible) are simple to characterize in terms of ‘diffuse’ beliefs over the actions of others. We describe a number of economic applications that fall in this category. We also explore the distinctive roles of public and private information in …
