Community Policing And Civic Journalism: Same Wine, Different Bottles?, Joanne Ziembo-Vogl Dec 1999

Community Policing And Civic Journalism: Same Wine, Different Bottles?, Joanne Ziembo-Vogl

Joanne Ziembo-Vogl

Community policing and civic journalism are strikingly similar, current movements within the social organizations of law enforcement and mass media. Defining civic journalism, best thought of as "community-focused journalism," has been problematic for the field of mass media but shapes the starting point for discussion. Identifying, analyzing, and contrasting commonalities within these two movements are the topics explored within this work. While the precepts of each movement are shaped by the respective organization, the inherent processes and goals remain notably similar. What are the comparative connections that shape community empowerment? How does each organization partner with its shared "community client" …

Measuring Market Power In Bilateral Oligopoly: The Wholesale Market For Beef, John Schroeter, Azzeddine Azzam, Mingxia Zhang Dec 1999

Measuring Market Power In Bilateral Oligopoly: The Wholesale Market For Beef, John Schroeter, Azzeddine Azzam, Mingxia Zhang

Azzeddine Azzam

Econometric methods for assessing the degree of market power typically rely on a maintained hypothesis of price-taking behavior on one side of the market or the other. In the analysis of bilateral oligopoly, however, one would like to leave open the question of whether buyers or sellers (or both) behave competitively while allowing for the possible exercise of market power on either side. In this paper, we address the problem of measuring market power in bilateral oligopoly. This requires that we first distinguish among three candidate equilibrium concepts: bilateral price-taking, seller price-taking, and buyer price-taking. Choosing among them comes down …

Malagasy Clause Structure, Ileana Paul Dec 1999

Malagasy Clause Structure, Ileana Paul

Ileana Paul

This thesis explores the nature of voice in Malagasy, a language spoken in Madagascar. In chapter 2, it is claimed that different passives promote arguments from different structural positions. Evidence is provided for a particular position, [Spec, v2P], where a certain class of elements (“displaced themes”) may be generated. One particular passive, the aprefix, promotes to subject elements in this position. In chapter 3, arguments are presented in favour of a structural analysis of circumstantial topic (CT). CT morphology licenses all arguments of the verb. Due to a requirement that all clauses have a subject (the Extended Projection Principle), some …

Intensive Supervision Probation: An Impact Evaluation, Greg Warchol Dec 1999

Intensive Supervision Probation: An Impact Evaluation, Greg Warchol

Greg Warchol

Beginning in the early 1980's, intensive supervision probation was increasingly viewed as a popular sentencing alternative to conventional probation and incarceration for specific types of high‐risk offenders. Evaluations of intensive probation however, have raised doubts about its effectiveness in reducing recidivism among high‐risk offenders. Using a quasi experimental multiple interrupted time series research design, this study compares recidivism rates for high‐risk repeat DWI offenders in an intensive supervision probation program to repeat DWI offenders who were sentenced to incarceration. The results indicate that offenders who were sentenced to and completed intensive supervision probation had a lower rate of recidivism than …

Visible Landscapes/Invisible People: Negotiating The Power Of Representation In A Mining Community, Robert Mccarl Dec 1999

Visible Landscapes/Invisible People: Negotiating The Power Of Representation In A Mining Community, Robert Mccarl

Robert S. McCarl

On May 26 1996, two demolitions experts from Morrison-Knudsen set charges under the gigantic stacks of the former Bunker Hill smelter in Kellogg, Idaho. A contest was held to determine who would push the button and send the stacks plummeting to the ground. Lining the freeway, front porches, and rooftops of the denuded hillsides were thousands of people who came to watch the spectacle. Among them were two important factions in the community: One faction comprised those who were there to cheer the destruction of the corporate and industrial symbol that to many of the mining and union families of …
