Library users who are Web users expect customization and interactivity. MyLibrary is a Cornell University Library initiative to provide numerous personalized library services to Cornell University students, faculty, and staff. Currently, it consists of MyLinks, a tool for collecting and organizing resources for private use by a patron, and MyUpdates, a tool to help scholars stay informed of new resources provided by the library. This article provides an overview of the MyLibrary project, explains the rationale for the development of the service in the library, briefly discusses the hardware and software used for the service, and suggests some of the …

Clusterin Is An Atp-Independent Chaperone With Very Broad Substrate Specificity That Stabilizes Stressed Proteins In A Folding-Competent State, Stephen Poon, Simon Easterbrook-Smith, Mark Rybchyn, John Carver, Mark Wilson Dec 1999

Clusterin Is An Atp-Independent Chaperone With Very Broad Substrate Specificity That Stabilizes Stressed Proteins In A Folding-Competent State, Stephen Poon, Simon Easterbrook-Smith, Mark Rybchyn, John Carver, Mark Wilson

Mark R Wilson

We recently reported that the ubiquitous, secreted protein clusterin has chaperone activity in vitro [Humphreys et al. (1999) J. Biol. Chem. 274, 6875−6881]. In this study, we demonstrate that clusterin (i) inhibits stress-induced precipitation of a very broad range of structurally divergent protein substrates, (ii) binds irreversibly via an ATP-independent mechanism to stressed proteins to form solubilized high molecular weight complexes, (iii) lacks detectable ATPase activity, (iv) when acting alone, does not effect refolding of stressed proteins in vitro, and (v) stabilizes stressed proteins in a state competent for refolding by heat shock protein 70 (HSP70). Furthermore, we show that, …

Redesigning Freshman Seminar Library Instruction Based On Information Competencies, Elizabeth Parang, Melinda Raine, Trisha Medeiros Dec 1999

Redesigning Freshman Seminar Library Instruction Based On Information Competencies, Elizabeth Parang, Melinda Raine, Trisha Medeiros

Elizabeth Parang

During summer 1997, instruction librarians at Pepperdine University's Payson Library began restructuring Freshman seminar library instruction sessions because they observed that students were not acquiring the needed library and information literacy skills. Too much material was being presented in too short a time with no opportunity for hands-on experience. Taking advantage of the opportunity for Web-based instruction, students now tour the library and learn catalog searching skills at their own pace outside of class. Librarians reinforce vital library skills and introduce the students to a general database during classroom instruction which includes hands-on experience. Evaluation indicates that students completing the …

Conceptualizing The Ethical Aspects Of Community Policing's Inception And Practice, Joanne Ziembo-Vogl, Gorazd Meško Dec 1999

Conceptualizing The Ethical Aspects Of Community Policing's Inception And Practice, Joanne Ziembo-Vogl, Gorazd Meško

Joanne Ziembo-Vogl

The rationale for this conceptual work is to examine the ethical aspects of community policing's inception and practice, as evidenced in America. Historical patterns of ethical issues and reform responses to ethical breaches in conduct are informative for newly democratic I. countries in the midst of transitional models of law enforcement. Much can be learned from the rich history of American policing. The history of modern policing in America commenced with what Kelling and Moore (1988) term the "Political Era" in the late 1800s. Spanning several decades into the early 19005, the Political Era was marked by broad provision of …

Do Not Give Me Your Tired, Your Poor! Determinants Of Legislator Voting On Immigration Issues, Jorge Gonzalez, Nipoli Kamdar Dec 1999

Do Not Give Me Your Tired, Your Poor! Determinants Of Legislator Voting On Immigration Issues, Jorge Gonzalez, Nipoli Kamdar

Jorge Gonzalez

This paper examines the determinants of the U.S. House of Representatives 1996 vote on the "The Immigration in the National Interest Act." Public choice theory suggests that the voting behavior of legislators is affected by the interests of their constituencies, special interest politics, and by their ideology. The paper uses probit analysis to test the significance of the above factors. The results suggest that Representatives responded to the socioeconomic interests of their constituents as expected. However, in a surprising finding, pro-business legislators appear to have voted to restrict immigration.

Patient-By-Treatment Context Interaction In Chronic Disease: A Conceptual Framework For The Study Of Patient Adherence, Alan Christensen

Alan J. Christensen

Previous reviews have concluded that there is little or no evidence supporting a predictable association between patient characteristics and regimen adherence in chronic illness. The primary objective of this article is to propose an alternative conceptual framework for the interpretation and design of adherence research.
