Serving Graduate Students At A Community College Library, Daniel K. Blewett Dec 2023

Serving Graduate Students At A Community College Library, Daniel K. Blewett

Journal of Graduate Librarianship

Even though a community college library rarely attempts to offer the same depth of support found at a university, it can still serve the needs of local graduate students in two ways: through the library’s core collection of print and electronic resources, and through its on-site services, spaces, and librarian expertise. Graduate students need to know that these resources are available to them. The knowledge and ability of the librarian is key to supporting this patron group. This article is informed by the author’s experiences at the College of DuPage, a large comprehensive community college in northeastern Illinois.

A Two-Phase Study Examining Graduate Library Student Knowledge Gains And Perceptions Of Information Literacy Modules, Holly S. Hebert, Karen V. Nourse, Kevin S. Krahenbuhl

Journal of Graduate Librarianship

This paper reports the results of a two-phase study examining the effectiveness of a set of five online learning modules in increasing student understanding of information literacy topics. The modules were deployed within the foundational class of an online Master of Library Science program. Using Qualtrics-based surveys, Phase 1 assessed 15 students for their possible knowledge gains as well as their perceptions of their experiences with the instructional content. Through a combination of statistical and qualitative analysis, the researchers found modest knowledge gains as well as positive student perceptions of their instruction. Based upon the moderate success of Phase 1, …

More Obstacles For The Graduate Student Author: Open Access Etds Trigger Plagiarism Detectors, Dede Dawson, Kate Langrell

Journal of Graduate Librarianship

Supporting graduate students as authors is one of the many services we provide at the University Library, University of Saskatchewan (USask). Graduate students often submit articles to journals based on content from their electronic theses or dissertations (ETDs). Recently, we have noticed an increase in the number of such article submissions being flagged for possible rejection on “plagiarism” or “prior publication” grounds. We suspect this may be because plagiarism detection software is increasingly being integrated into publishers’ article submission systems. This software is triggered by the existence of the student’s open access (OA) ETD in our institutional repository. This happens …

Abstract

Growth and Impact: The Dual Purpose of Leadership Development for

Professionals in Middle Management Roles

Emerging leaders are aware of the skills needed for executive leadership but may not possess the knowledge of how to develop those skills, meaning they often enter higher levels of leadership with awareness of what is needed to lead but without the actual skills to do so. More than any time in history, it is critical that those placed in leadership positions develop skills prior to being elevated. On the job leadership development is no longer a reliable option and intentionality to developmental time …

Weakness Is The New Strength: How Vulnerability Makes Leaders Stronger, Scott Dick Dec 2023

Weakness Is The New Strength: How Vulnerability Makes Leaders Stronger, Scott Dick

Transform

Weakness is the new strength: How vulnerability makes leaders stronger is the result from the meta-analysis of five phenomenological studies designed to generate a theory that explains how exemplar leaders from five different fields used “soft-skills” and four domains of behavior to create mutual shared knowledge, resolve conflict and transform relationships to produce breakthrough results. The four domains of behavior are communication, collaboration, ethics, and emotional intelligence. The sample was composed of 75 exemplar leaders from five different professional fields and included an analysis of over 1,300 pages of interview transcripts as the main data source for the study. The …

Covid, Church, & Cuts: A Single Narrative Case Study Of Pandemic Impacts On A Bi-Vocational Pastor & Barber, A. D. Hooker, Camille S. Talbert

The Journal of Faith, Education, and Community

This narrative case study provides an in-depth look into the impacts of the COVID-19 Pandemic from the perspective of an assistant pastor with a small African American church in an urban city. His story indicates that the pandemic had both positive and negative effects on the pastor’s ability to carry out his role of pastoral care and ministry. Some positives were the results of new technological adaptations that helped to improve members’ consistency in attending and participating in weekly services. Some negative effects imposed by COVID-19 was the revelation of imbalanced relationships and a lack of trust in God. The …

Why Autistic Sociality Is Different: Reduced Interest In Competing For Social Status, Catherine L. Caldwell-Harris, Anna M. Schwartz Dec 2023

Why Autistic Sociality Is Different: Reduced Interest In Competing For Social Status, Catherine L. Caldwell-Harris, Anna M. Schwartz

Ought: The Journal of Autistic Culture

The complexity of human organizations poses the challenge of understanding and navigating social hierarchies. If 'social impairment' is a defining feature of autism, then these challenges may be heightened for autistic persons. We reject the premise of social deficits but follow recommendations to investigate how autistic social behavior diverges from neurotypical norms. We review autistic writings and also scholarship on reputation management, non-conformity and moral reasoning to argue that autistic people dislike social hierarchies, find status-seeking illogical, prefer egalitarian relationships, and often seek to report wrong-doing by authorities. We outline three possible causes: (1) reduced social motivation; (2) emergent property …

The Future Of Critical Autism Studies (Cas): Thinking Through Critical Discourse Studies And Postcolonial Feminism, Cansu Elmadagli

Ought: The Journal of Autistic Culture

The field of Critical Autism Studies (CAS) has evolved significantly since its inception, with scholars continually redefining its key tenets and objectives. CAS emerged as a response to conventional medical and social deficit-based models of autism and seeks to challenge the prevailing norm that considers neurotypicality as the unquestioned standard. This article, written by an autistic scholar, aims to contribute to the ongoing discussions in CAS. The article introduces novel perspectives by suggesting connections between CAS, Critical Discourse Studies (CDS), and postcolonial feminism. It advocates for the incorporation of concepts and tools from these traditions to enrich CAS’s approach. Furthermore, …

How Animal Assisted Therapy With Dogs Is Understood And Perceived Among Health Care Providers And The General Public In Canada, Healey Gardiner Dr., Jill Singleton-Jackson Dr.

Journal of Counseling and Psychology

When a dog is included in treatment to meet an individual’s therapeutic goal it is known as Animal-Assisted Therapy (AAT). Although AAT has increased in popularity, limited research exists regarding its efficacy. According to the diffusion of innovation theory an innovation must be properly communicated to all appropriate channels before it may be adopted into practice. Little is known about how AAT is understood and perceived among healthcare professional and public populations in Canada. In the present study, health care professionals and the general public in Canada were surveyed. Attitude toward dogs, openness to experience, agreeableness, and subjective distress were …

Written Testimony Of Philip Hackney For The Hearing On Growth Of The Tax-Exempt Sector And The Impact On The American Political Landscape (U.S. House Ways & Means Subcommittee On Oversight, December 13, 2023), Philip Hackney

Testimony

In written testimony before the House Ways & Means Subcommittee on Oversight on December 13, 2023, Professor Hackney emphasized three points about tax-exempt organizations and politics: (1) a diverse nonprofit sector that fosters civic participation and engagement is a gem of the United States -- we should maintain that; (2) the IRS budget for Exempt Organizations continues to NOT be sufficient to ensure the laws are equally and fairly enforced; and (3) there are simple things the IRS could do to enforce the law that it is not doing.

Appearance Teasing And Identity Formation Amongst Young Adults: An Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis, Sneha Yadav, Shagun Shagun, Koko Veerning Moyon, Divya Bhanot

The Qualitative Report

Appearance teasing (AT) is such a widespread phenomenon that to discount its meaning, impact, and severity on the lives of those who are teased would be a mistake. This study aims to explore the lived experiences of Indian youths who have been appearance-teased by their close friends and family, how they perceive it has impacted their senses of self and identity and to understand their coping strategies that help them manage the negative effects of AT. Data was collected via semi structured interviews with six young adults and analyzed using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis. Analysis of the transcripts reveals five master …

La Historia De Felix: Qué Ha Pasado Con Los Migrantes Del Roosevelt Hotel, Eduardo A. Gonzalez Quintero

Capstones

During the last week of July, a large group of migrants from Central and South America and Africa arrived at the Roosevelt Hotel to apply for a place in New York City's asylum system.

The scene was, in a way, dystopian: hundreds of people lying or leaning against each other, trying to rest from their exhausting journeys and covering themselves from the relentless New York summer sun, in front of dozens of photographers and reporters looking for the perfect shot and the perfect interview for their stories.

These testimonies, published in multiple outlets, showed that despite the big social, political, …

Last year, 12 inmates died in custody at the Pima County Jail in Tucson, Arizona. With a 10-year average jail population of 1,827, that is a per capita rate of 656.8 deaths per 100,000 inmates.

According to the most recent data from the Bureau of Justice Statistics, the 2019 national local jail mortality rate was 167 deaths for every 100,000 inmates, making the Pima County Jail’s 2022 per capita death rate nearly four times as high as the national average in 2019.

In a December 2022 memo to the Pima County Board of Supervisors, Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos wrote …

Gun Violence In The Deadly Mississippi Delta, Gerard L. Edic

Capstones

The Mississippi Delta boasts some of the nation's highest rates of fatal shootings yet it often is not included in the national narrative of gun violence. This piece looks at the costs of gun violence in one Mississippi Delta county, Leflore. It incorporates my own anecdotal experience, having covered homicides when I worked for the local paper, as well as interviews with residents and a sociologist who wrote a book assessing the cost of fatal shootings.

Exodus: The Cost Of Leaving High-Control Religion And Life After Breaking Free, Hannah-Kathryn Valles Dec 2023

Exodus: The Cost Of Leaving High-Control Religion And Life After Breaking Free, Hannah-Kathryn Valles

Capstones

There are many names for those who leave their faith community—apostate, heretic, dissenter. While there is no singular path to parting with one’s religious beliefs, the experience can be fraught and intensely painful. For those in high-control religious environments, the price of leaving is even steeper.

When identity, social connections, finances, and family structures are dependent on conforming to strict religious and ideological norms, the decision to leave can have far-reaching consequences. For those who do make the bold decision to leave, it’s hardly the end of the road. In many ways, leaving is just the first step toward finding …

Aiming To Connect: Do College Students Of Color Feel As Though They Belong In The Psychology Major?, Sarah Smith

Honors Program Theses and Projects

At Bridgewater State University (BSU), the psychology department consists of many students of differing backgrounds and demographics. Certain student demographics that can lead to marginalization could potentially influence a student’s connection to their academic program. This project aims to determine if students of color experience a lack of connection within the psychology program. Students in each PSYC 150 (Orientation to the Psychology Major) course at BSU are invited to complete pretest/posttest surveys. We assessed results of surveys completed from Fall 2020-Spring 2023. We hypothesized that students of color would report lower connectedness through measures of sense of belonging, challenges faced, …

Cannabis-Induced Psychotic Disorder And Schizophrenia Diagnostic Comparison, Tyanna Brodhagen Dec 2023

Cannabis-Induced Psychotic Disorder And Schizophrenia Diagnostic Comparison, Tyanna Brodhagen

Honors Theses

Recent changes in cannabis legalization will have broad societal impacts for decades to come, not the least of which are the unknown consequences to neuropsychiatric health, particularly for adolescents and young adults. Cannabis-induced psychotic disorder (CIPD) is a controversial and poorly understood neuropsychiatric condition characterized by a psychotic experience brought on by excessive cannabis intoxication and/or withdrawal. Although CIPD is currently an uncommon diagnosis, the overlapping symptomology and comorbidity with schizophrenia indicates CIPD may be underdiagnosed. Some authors suggest the under diagnosis of CIPD may be correlated to physician diagnostic practices. This honors thesis constitutes a scholarly literature review and …
