Exploring Adaptations To Famine: Rats Selectively Bred For Differential Intake Of Saccharin Differ On Deprivation-Induced Hyperactivity And Emotionality., Clinton Chapman, Jill Arnal, Dennis Vanderweele, Nancy Dess

Clinton D Chapman

In many mammals, including humans and rats, acute starvation increases locomotor activity. This seemingly paradoxical and potentially lethal behavior pattern may reflect an evolved, multisystem response to sudden threats to metabolic homeostasis. The present study provides a novel test of this idea. Occidental High- (HiS) and Low- (LoS) Saccharin-Consuming rats differ on the taste phenotype and also on some affective measures, on which LoS rats score higher. Wheel running was measured in HiS and LoS rats with food available freely vs for 1 hr daily. As predicted, restricted feeding stimulated significantly more running among LoS rats. Two independent tests of …

Globalization And Raw Materials-Based Development: The Case Of The Aluminum Industry, Paul Ciccantell Dec 1999

Globalization And Raw Materials-Based Development: The Case Of The Aluminum Industry, Paul Ciccantell

Paul Ciccantell

Current popular and scholarly analyses of the process of globalization often assume that this is a new phenomenon and that it operates in the same manner across all sectors of the economy. This paper argues that precisely the opposite is true: globalization is a longstanding process that exhibits distinct characteristics in different industries and different time periods. The analytic strategy to examine this process is historically grounded in the aluminum industry, one of the pioneers of the process of globalization. This paper analyzes the changing nature of the process of globalization in the aluminum industry, focusing attention on the articulation …

Redefining Local Government Roles In Public Services: A Research‐Informed Process Model, Stacie Bosley Dec 1999

Redefining Local Government Roles In Public Services: A Research‐Informed Process Model, Stacie Bosley

Stacie Bosley

County officials in the seven-county metropolitan area of the State of Minnesota's Twin Cities of Minneapolis and St Paul were seeking to redefine county roles in service delivery. This article reports on a process model that was piloted on two services. The model was commissioned by officials; was based upon and informed by literature and comparative experience; began with an examination of functions performed; involved participants in focusing the study; was context-focused; and involved local stakeholders in projecting the implications of alternative county roles. These characteristics complicated the research management process because the process took more time, involved more actors, …

Internet Reference Service: General Sources And Trends, Joseph Zumalt, Rebecca Smith

Joseph R. Zumalt

Providing quality reference services is more challenging than ever. In addition to traditional print sources, the information professional now has a dazzling array of databases, both free and expensive, readily available. Internet reference service has evolved quickly over the last decade, moving from a place of last resort to a mainstream application. Librarians have responded in many innovative ways to connect their customers with information available on the Internet. However, superior Internet reference service requires substantial investments in equipment that administrators will have to consider. Staff and customer training have become pressing needs. Providing access to appropriate databases and materials …

Import Competition And Worker Productivity In Unionized Firms, Neil Campbell, Neil Vousden Dec 1999

Import Competition And Worker Productivity In Unionized Firms, Neil Campbell, Neil Vousden

Neil Campbell

This paper analyzes the effects of trade and labor market liberalization on wages and worker productivity/effort in a domestic unionized firm with firm-union bargaining over wages and effort. It is shown that both types of liberalization will induce a 'cold shower effect' (a rise in effort) if the union's objective function is more heavily weighted towards employment. However, the welfare effects of the two policies can differ markedly. The paper also identifies a separate productivity cost of production associated with the distortionary effect of protection on worker effort.

The Acquisitions Culture Wars, Edward Shreeves Dec 1999

The Acquisitions Culture Wars, Edward Shreeves

Edward Shreeves

The conflict on college and university campuses about the role of print and digital resources in the library of the future resembles in many ways the so-called culture wars made famous in the political rhetoric of the 1980s and 1990s. The conflict mirrors the broader debate over the role of computer and related technologies in society and, more specifically, the future of the book and print culture in the information age. Librarians have paid insufficient attention to the political and rhetorical dimensions of this conflict and are viewed by some vocal and articulate faculty members as having betrayed the fundamental …

The Internet And Sex Industries, Donna M. Hughes Dr. Dec 1999

The Internet And Sex Industries, Donna M. Hughes Dr.

Donna M. Hughes

As a part of globalization, women and children are increasingly becoming commodities to be bought, sold, and consumed by organized crime rings, tourists, military personnel, and men seeking sexual entertainment or non-threatening marriage partners. Through financial and technological interdependence, the sex industry and the Internet industry have become partners in the global sexual exploitation of women and children.

Immediate And Delayed Stimulus Repetitions Evoke Different Erps In A Serial-Probe Recognition Task., Stephen L. Crites, Pedro Delgado, James V. Devine, Dora I. I. Lozano

Stephen L Crites Jr.

Examined whether event-related potentials (ERPs) associated with stimulus repetition and recognition in a serial-probe recognition task were comparable to ERPs in other tasks that are more typically used to investigate old/new ERP effects. The experiment consisted of 320 trials in which a recognition probe followed a four-item memory set; 160 trials consisted of images depicting common objects that were easy to label (EL task), and 160 trials consisted of images depicting abstract patterns that were difficult to label (DL task). 19 Ss indicated whether a probe that followed each memory set was or was not presented in the memory set. …

The New Rural-Urban Labor Mobility In China: Causes And Implications, Michael C. Seeborg, Zhenhu Jin, Yiping Zhu Dec 1999

The New Rural-Urban Labor Mobility In China: Causes And Implications, Michael C. Seeborg, Zhenhu Jin, Yiping Zhu

Michael Seeborg

As the Chinese economy reforms, a huge new population of rural-urban migrants is transforming the urban labor force. This article explores some of the most important reasons for the emergence of the floating population in China. We argue that the neoclassical model alone is not adequate to explain the massive rural-urban internal migration underway in China. Instead, ideas drawn from both sociological theories of segmented markets and institutional economics are used to supplement the standard neoclassical explanation. We found that Chinese policy reforms in both rural and urban areas decreased the balkanization of labor markets and opened up employment opportunities …

Analysis Of Empirical Surveys On Organisational Innovation And Lessons For Future Community Innovation Surveys, Juergen Wengel, Gunter Lay, Annette Nylund, Lars Bager-Sjogren, Paul Stoneman, Nicola Bellini, Andrea Bonaccorsi, Philip Shapira

Philip Shapira

To address issues of how to better gather data on organisational innovation, the study “Analysis of Empirical Surveys on Organisational Innovation and Lessons for Future Community Innovation Surveys,” was commissioned by DG XIII-C of the European Commission. The study had two major aims:
  • The scattered experiences with surveys on organisational innovations in Europe had to be collected and summarised, both with respect to methodological and application success factors, in a systematic way.
  • These experiences were to form the basis for the development of methodological approaches to examining organisational innovation Community-wide, in a comparable way and taking into account the needs …

Adult Sexual Revictimization Among Black Women Sexually Abused In Childhood: A Prospective Examination Of Serious Consequences Of Abuse, Carolyn M. West, Linda M. Williams, Jane A. Siegel

Carolyn M. West

This study is a prospective investigation of adult sexual revictimization among 113 Black women with documented histories of childhood sexual abuse. The purpose was to obtain information on the frequency of sexual abuse in both childhood and adulthood and to determine which characteristics of the child sexual abuse were predictive of revictimization. Thirty percent of the participants were revictimized and physical force predicted subsequent victimization. This study also investigated possible sexual behavioral correlates of revictimization. Revictimized women reported more involvement in prostitution and partner violence. Finally, the present study considered the reproductive and sexual health correlates of revictimization. When compared …
