Dating Aggression Among Low Income African American Youth: An Examination Of Gender Differences And Antagonistic Beliefs, Carolyn M. West

Carolyn M. West

Prevalence of aggression inflicted and sustained in dating relationships was investigated for 171 low income African American youth. More women were victims of choking, attempted forced intercourse, and hurt feelings. As perpetrators, more women reported making threats, throwing objects, and hitting their partner. However, men perpetrated more serious sexual and psychological aggression, including forced breast fondling, attempted forced intercourse, and making a partner feel inferior and degrading her.Women victims of sexual aggression, when compared to nonvictims, expressed more agreement with adversarial sexual beliefs regarding male-female relationships. More than one third of the participants endorsed antagonistic beliefs concerning Black male-female relationships. …

Computing The Extent Of Circumvention Of Proposition 13: A Response, Robert L. Sexton, Gary M. Galles Dec 1999

Computing The Extent Of Circumvention Of Proposition 13: A Response, Robert L. Sexton, Gary M. Galles

Robert L Sexton

ABSTRACT. Galles and Sexton (1998) showed that California state and local revenues exceeded their previous real per capita levels as did the sum of property taxes plus charges and miscellaneous revenues within a decade after Proposition 13 passed, and concluded that Proposition 13 was only temporarily successful at shrinking California state and local governments. Khoury and Pal (2000) challenge this conclusion. However, their conclusion that Proposition 13’s circumvention “has been only marginal” results from using per $1000 of income comparisons rather than real per capita comparisons and from using growth rate changes, which fail to adjust for U.S. fiscal trends, …

Comparing The Moral Values Of Slovenian And American Criminal Justice Students, Police Officers, And Jail Officers, Joanne Ziembo-Vogl, Gorazd Meško, James Houston, Peter Umek

Joanne Ziembo-Vogl

Braithwaite and Scott describe the study of values as multi-disciplinary involving, "the intersection of interests of philosophers, anthropologists, sociologists, and psychologists. Values are presumed to encapsulate the aspirations of individuals and societies. They pertain to what is desirable, to deeply engrained standards that determine future directions and that justify past actions. Values have been postulated as key constructs in the socialization process, and have found their way into cultural, religious, political, educational, occupational, and family research" (1991 :661). Psychological and biological aspects of an individual (one's characteristics and needs) link research to attitudes, personality, and self-esteem (1991). These individual factors …

The Economics Of Residential Solid Waste Management, Thomas C. Kinnaman

Thomas C. Kinnaman

This paper provides a broad overview of recent trends in solid waste and recycling, related public policy issues, and the economics literature devoted to these topics. Public attention to solid waste and recycling has increased dramatically over the past decade both in the United States and in Europe. In response, economists have developed models to help policy makers choose the efficient mix of policy levers to regulate solid waste and recycling activities. Economists have also employed different kinds of data to estimate the factors that contribute to the generation of residential solid waste and recycling and to estimate the effectiveness …

Symptoms Of Dependence, Multiple Substance Use, And Labor Market Outcomes, Michael T. French, Michael L. Dennis, Jeremy W. Bray, Gary A. Zarkin

Michael T. French

The prevalence and costs of alcohol and drug disorders pose a serious social concern for policymakers. In this paper, we use data from the National Household Surveys on Drug Abuse (NHSDA) to estimate simple descriptive statistics and analysis of variance (ANOVA) models of the relationship between symptoms of dependence and labor market outcomes for alcohol, cigarettes, marijuana, and other illicit drugs. For men, we find that substance use with symptoms of dependence is associated with both lower employment rates and fewer hours of work. For women, we find that substance use with symptoms of dependence is associated with lower employment …

Three Effects Of Social Norms On Law: Expression, Deterrence, And Internalization, Robert D. Cooter Dec 1999

Three Effects Of Social Norms On Law: Expression, Deterrence, And Internalization, Robert D. Cooter

Robert Cooter

State organizations suffer from agency problems that preclude effective motivation of people by formal means alone. Social norms contribute to the effectiveness of state law. Aligning law with morality creates power synergies. I analysis three of them: expression (coordination by law and morality), justification (intrinsic motivation to do what is right) , and sanctions (material costs of wrongdoing).

Conflicto Y Democracia En Ecuador.

Crop-Raiding Elephants And Conservation Implications At Way Kambas National Park, Sumatra, Indonesia, Philip J. Nyhus, Sumianto, Ronald Tilson

Philip J. Nyhus

Crop raiding by wild elephants is one of the most significant sources of park–people conflict in Sumatra, Indonesia. The distribution, impact and conservation implications of elephant crop-raiding in 13 villages that border Way Kambas National Park in southern Sumatra were studied for 18 months. The data are based on rapid village and field assessments, data logs maintained by village observers and a quantitative household survey. Elephants raided crops year-round at a mean rate of 0.53 elephants per day for the entire study area. The frequency of crop raiding was related to vegetation type along the park border, the size and …
