Optimal Policies For Investment With Time-Varying Return Distributions, Douglas Steigerwald, Doncho Donchev, Svetlozar Rachev Dec 2001

Optimal Policies For Investment With Time-Varying Return Distributions, Douglas Steigerwald, Doncho Donchev, Svetlozar Rachev

Douglas G. Steigerwald

We develop a model in which investors must learn the distribution of asset returns over time. The process of learning is made more difficult by the fact that the distributions are not constant through time. We consider risk-neutral investors who have quadratic utility and are selecting between two risky assets. We determine the time at which it is optimal to update the distribution estimate and, hence, alter portfolio weights. Our results deliver an optimal policy for asset allocation, that is, the sequence of time intervals at which it is optimal to switch between assets, based on stochastic optimal control theory. …

On Recommending, Jonathan Furner Dec 2001

On Recommending, Jonathan Furner

Jonathan Furner

The core of any document retrieval system is a mechanism that ranks the documents in a large collection in order of the likelihood with which they match the preferences of any person who interacts with the system. Given a broader interpretation of “recommending” than is commonly accepted, such a preference ordering may be viewed as a recommendation, made by the system to the information-seeker, that is itself typically derived through synthesis of multiple preference orderings expressed as recommendations by indexers, information-seekers, and document authors. The ERIn (Evaluation--Recommendation--Information) model, a decision-theoretic framework for understanding information-related activity, highlights the centrality of recommending …

Differences In The Functional Neuroanatomy Of Inhibitory Control Across The Adult Life Span, Kristy Nielson, Scott Langenecker, H Garavan

Kristy Nielson

Inhibitory control, the ability to suppress irrelevant or interfering stimuli, is a fundamental cognitive function that deteriorates during aging, but little is understood about the bases of decline. Thus, we used event-related functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to study inhibitory control in healthy adults aged 18 to 78. Activation during successful inhibition occurred predominantly in right prefrontal and parietal regions and was more extensive, bilaterally and prefrontally, in the older groups. Presupplementary motor area was also more active in poorer inhibitory performers. Therefore, older adults activate areas that are comparable to those activated by young adults during inhibition, as well …

Evidence That Clusterin Has Discrete Chaperone And Ligand Binding Sites, Johnathon Lakins, Stephen Poon, Simon Easterbrook-Smith, John Carver, Martin Tenniswood, Mark Wilson Dec 2001

Evidence That Clusterin Has Discrete Chaperone And Ligand Binding Sites, Johnathon Lakins, Stephen Poon, Simon Easterbrook-Smith, John Carver, Martin Tenniswood, Mark Wilson

Mark R Wilson

Clusterin is the first identified extracellular mammalian chaperone and binds to a wide variety of partly unfolded, stressed proteins. Clusterin also binds to many different unstressed ligands including the cell surface receptor low density lipoprotein receptor-related protein-2 (LRP-2). It is unknown whether clusterin binds to all of these many ligands via one or more binding sites. Furthermore, the region(s) of clusterin involved in these many binding interactions remain to be identified. As part of an investigation of these issues, we expressed recombinant human clusterin in the yeast Pichia pastoris. The resultant protein had variable proteolytic truncations of the C-terminal region …

Social Capital And Electronic Networks: For Profit Vs. For Community Approaches, John Sullivan, Eugene Borgida, Melinda Jackson, Eric Riedel, Alina Oxendine, Amy Gangl Dec 2001

Social Capital And Electronic Networks: For Profit Vs. For Community Approaches, John Sullivan, Eugene Borgida, Melinda Jackson, Eric Riedel, Alina Oxendine, Amy Gangl

Alina Oxendine

In this article, the authors discuss the implementation of a community electronic network in a rural Minnesota town. The network is intended to help the community keep up with global technological progress by increasing access to the Internet. The current project compares this community approach to electronic networks with an economic, for-profit approach utilized in a nonequivalent control community. Drawing on the theory of social capital, the authors consider the relative impacts of privately oriented social engagement versus publicly oriented political engagement in relation to collective outcomes. The findings to date show that in the presence of a broadly based …

Trends In Author Characteristics And Diversity Issues In The Journal Of Marital And Family Therapy From 1990 To 2000, Julia Pryce

Julia Pryce

In this article, we present an analysis and comparison of published articles in the Journal of Marital and Family Therapy (JMFT)between 1990-1995 and 1996-2000. This studyfocused on trends in author gendel; highest degree, and professional afiliation, and article content on issues of cultural and family diversity (race/ethnicity, class, religiodspirituality, gendel; sexual orientation, and variedfamilyforms}. Keyfindings show a significant shifrfrom 69% malefirst authorsin1990-1995 toequalgenderrepresentationinauthorshipfor1996-2000 articles, with a particular increase infemale PhDs. Articles addressing diversity issues doubledfrom 15.6% of all 1990-1995 articles to 31% in 1996-2000. Of note, women authored 73% of the 1996-2000 articles on the wide range of diversity issues. "I'M Not A Racist, But...": The Moral Quandary Of Race, Lawrence Blum Dec 2001

"I'M Not A Racist, But...": The Moral Quandary Of Race, Lawrence Blum

Lawrence Blum

Not all racial incidents are racist incidents, Lawrence Blum says. "We need a more varied and nuanced moral vocabulary for talking about the arena of race. We should not be faced with a choice of 'racism' or nothing." Use of the word "racism" is pervasive: An article about the NAACP's criticism of television networks for casting too few "minority" actors in lead roles asks, "Is television a racist institution?" A white girl in Virginia says it is racist for her African-American teacher to wear African attire.Blum argues that a growing tendency to castigate as "racism" everything that goes wrong in …

The Meaning Of Property Rights: Law Versus Economics?, D. Cole, Peter Grossman Dec 2001

The Meaning Of Property Rights: Law Versus Economics?, D. Cole, Peter Grossman

Peter Z. Grossman

Property rights are fundamentals to economic analysis. There is, however, no consensus in the economic literature about what property rights are. Economists define them variously and inconsistently, sometimes in ways that deviate from the conventional understandings of legal scholars and judges. This article explores ways in which definitions of property rights in the economic literature diverge from conventional legal understandings, and how those divergences can create interdisciplinary confusion and bias economic analyses. Indeed, some economists' idiosyncratic definitions of property rights, if used to guide policy, could lead to suboptimal economic outcomes.

Users coming to our library catalogs are more often looking for materials dealing with particular subjects rather than seeking specific titles or authors. Therefore, when we prepareour catalogs we must take special care to use terminology which will best retrieve this material. We must pay special attention to the "aboutness" of each item in order to select themost precise term.
