From War To Peace: Fateful Decisions In International Politics, Charles Kegley, Jr., Greg Raymond

Greg Raymond

This undergraduate political science text presents important concepts for analyzing war and peace decision making, followed by a series of case studies focusing on the causes of a number of pivotal wars and the construction of peaceful settlements. A final section provides a summary to prompt critical thinking about rival approaches to peacemaking in contemporary international politics. The jacket and title page say Bedford/St. Martin's, but Wadsworth now owns their political science books. Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)

Une Anaphore Nue En Malgache, Ileana Paul Dec 2001

Une Anaphore Nue En Malgache, Ileana Paul

Ileana Paul

This article examines the Malagasy anaphor tena ‘body’. It is shown that this anaphor is a bare noun and therefore has a highly restricted distribution. Tena is then contrasted with another anaphor-like element, ny …

A Tale Of Two Towns: Assessing The Role Of Political Resources In A Community Electronic Network, John Sullivan, Eugene Borgida, Melinda Jackson, Eric Riedel, Alina Oxendine Dec 2001

A Tale Of Two Towns: Assessing The Role Of Political Resources In A Community Electronic Network, John Sullivan, Eugene Borgida, Melinda Jackson, Eric Riedel, Alina Oxendine

Alina Oxendine

In this study we examine responses to the recent expansion of information technology in two rural Minnesota towns. One of these towns took a cooperative approach to technology access, developing a community electronic network, while the other town relied on a more individualistic, entrepreneurial model. The present study examines citizens' attitudes concerning social, political, and technological issues in these two communities, with the goal of uncovering what kinds of attitudes and resources citizens need to have in order to help support and sustain a community electronic network. Structural equation modeling is used to specify the relationships among individuals' economic, political, …

Civic Culture Meets The Digital Divide: The Role Of Community Electronic Networks Dec 2001

Civic Culture Meets The Digital Divide: The Role Of Community Electronic Networks

Alina Oxendine

The concept of social capital reflects the norms and social relations embedded in the social structure of societies that enable people to coordinate community action to achieve desired goals. Our research focuses on the role that norms of cooperation and civic and political culture play in addressing the “digital divide” in computer use and Internet access. We review evidence from mail surveys of randomly selected respondents in two rural Minnesota communities as well as qualitative focus group and archival evidence suggesting that the communities have adopted different approaches to technology diffusion. Whether information technology is viewed as a public or …

Review Of "Fighting For Justice: The Life Story Of David Burgess" By David Burgess With Forward By Bill Moyers, Harlan Stelmach

Harlan Stelmach

"The chapters in this book represent some contemporary wrestling with varied dimensions of the struggle for human rights today. The authors have kept the focus on the realities of global society rather than on academic studies alone. The articles report on particular situations, on actions taken and on possibilities for future action rather than dealing only in generalities." ~ from the Introduction

The Neighborhood Concept: A Retrospective Of Physical Design And Social Interaction, Nicholas Patricios Dec 2001

The Neighborhood Concept: A Retrospective Of Physical Design And Social Interaction, Nicholas Patricios

Nicholas Patricios

In 1929 the neighborhood concept was published separately in two forms. First was the neighborhood idea of Clarence Stein and Henry Wright, exemplified in their plan for Radburn. Second was the Neighborhood Unit idea of Clarence Perry. Since then, for the past seven decades, the concept has been applied and adapted internationally. Over this period the concepts original principles of neighborhood physical design, in both its forms, have varied with little controversy. What has been and is still an issue is the nature of the relationship between the neighborhood's physical arrangement and the social interaction among its residents. The conceptual …

Black Battered Women: New Directions For Research And Black Feminist Theory, Carolyn M. West Dec 2001

Black Battered Women: New Directions For Research And Black Feminist Theory, Carolyn M. West

Carolyn M. West

In the first section of this chapter I will review the research on racial differences and similarities in the rates and types of physical partner violence across the relationship continuum. In the section section, I will focus on new directions for research. More specifically, methodological problems may influence the research findings, and thus our understanding of racial differences in domestic violence. I will review these research limitations and offer suggestions for more appropriate research methods. The goal of the final section is to articulate a Black feminist theoretical perspective that better explains violence in the lives of Black women.

African Americans’ Perceptions Of Workplace Equity: A Starting Point, Dan K. Hibbler Ph.D. Dec 2001

African Americans’ Perceptions Of Workplace Equity: A Starting Point, Dan K. Hibbler Ph.D.

Dan K Hibbler Ph.D.

For the past several decades, leisure researchers have investigated the impact that race has on leisure behavior and preferences, but there remains a paucity of research that addresses the issue of race in the leisure services workplace. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to investigate the perceptions of inequity, discrimination, and promotion opportunities among African Americans in the field of public parks and recreation. The study was conducted in multiple phases, and all included African Americans who were working for public recreation agencies in a midwestern state. First, telephone interviews were conducted with 11 African American middle managers. A …

Shera's Social Epistemology Recast As Psychological Bibliology, Jonathan Furner Dec 2001

Shera's Social Epistemology Recast As Psychological Bibliology, Jonathan Furner

Jonathan Furner

Shera, the library scientist, is often credited with introducing the term and concept of social epistemology; but his idea is most profitably viewed not as a contribution to epistemology or even to the sociology of knowledge, but rather as the forerunner of a document-focused strain of socio-cognitive psychology influential in the information sciences from the 1970s onwards. In turn, the work of Shera and his colleague Egan is itself reminiscent of the psychological bibliology defined by the documentalists Otlet and Rubakin in the early 20th century.

Scholar Or Baller In American Higher Education? A Visual Elicitation And Qualitative Assessment Of The Studentathlete's Mindset, Keith Harrison Dec 2001

Scholar Or Baller In American Higher Education? A Visual Elicitation And Qualitative Assessment Of The Studentathlete's Mindset, Keith Harrison

Dr. C. Keith Harrison

Eminent scholar Harry Edwards (2000) has articulated three major realities of African American males in sports: a) The presumption of innate, race-linked black athletic superiority and intellectual deficiency; b) media propaganda portraying sports as a broadly accessible route to African American social and economic mobility; and c) a lack of comparably visible, high-prestige African American role models beyond the sports arena. Driven by labeling theory (Becker, 1963; Goffman, 1959), eight African American male student athletes were surveyed and interviewed. The last two points of Edwards' scholarship were investigated. "We have pretty good historical data and quantitative data about African American …
