African American Racial Identity And Sport, Keith Harrison Dec 2001

African American Racial Identity And Sport, Keith Harrison

Dr. C. Keith Harrison

The purpose of this paper is to attempt to synthesize and apply African American racial identity theory and related research to the development of sport and physical activity patterns and preferences in African American youth. Historically the African American over-representation in particular sports phenomena has been examined genetically, anthropocentrically, physiologically, sociologically, and psychologically. The profusion of explanations is a testimony to the complexity of this phenomena. This manuscript provides yet another compelling perspective. Cross [(1995) The psychology of Nigrescence: revising the Cross Model, in: J.G. PONTEROTTO et al. (Eds) Handbook of Multicultural Counseling (Thousand Oaks, CA, Sage)] outlines the metamorphic …

The Might Have Been And Could Be Of Religion In Social Theory, Charles C. Lemert Dec 2001

The Might Have Been And Could Be Of Religion In Social Theory, Charles C. Lemert

Charles C Lemert

Religion may well be the most inscrutable surd of social theory, which began late in the 19th century dismissing the subject. Not even the renewal of interest in religion in the 1960s did much to make religion a respectable topic in social theory. It is possible that social theory’s troubles are, in part, due to its refusal to think about religion. Close examination of social theories of Greek religion suggest, for principal example, that religion is perfectly able to thrive alongside the profane provided both are founded on principles of finitude, which in turn may be said to be the …

The Economics Of Household Garbage And Recycling Behavior, Don Fullerton, Thomas Kinnaman

Thomas C. Kinnaman

This book collects ten previously published papers by Don Fullerton, or Thomas Kinnaman, or both together. These papers include a theory of optimal pricing per bag of garbage when recycling and dumping are available options, empirical work using a cross section of cities that charge different prices, and empirical work using a cross section of households at the start of a price per bag of garbage at the curb.

Urban Design Principles Of The Original Neighborhood Concepts, Nicholas Patricios Dec 2001

Urban Design Principles Of The Original Neighborhood Concepts, Nicholas Patricios

Nicholas Patricios

The neighbourhood concept is arguably one of the major planning landmarks that shaped the urban form of the twentieth century city in many countries. Coincidently, both the neighbourhood idea of Clarence Stein and Henry Wright, exemplified in their plan for Radburn, and the Neighbourhood Unit idea of Clarence Perry were published in 1929. The urban design principles of Stein and Wright included the idea of a superblock of residential units grouped around a central green, the separation of vehicles and pedestrians, and a road hierarchy with culs-de-sac for local access roads. A cluster of superblocks was to form a self-contained …

Interracial Couples Experience Of Leisure: A Social Network Approach, Dan K. Hibbler Ph.D. Dec 2001

Interracial Couples Experience Of Leisure: A Social Network Approach, Dan K. Hibbler Ph.D.

Dan K Hibbler Ph.D.

There has been a significant amount of research that has indicated divergent patterns of leisure participation among African Americans and European Americans;however, there has been a paucity of research that addresses the leisure patterns of interracial couples and families. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to investigate the leisure patterns of interracial couples and families, specifically African American and European American couples. A qualitative design was employed to gather in-depth interview data from six couples. The findings indicated that the interracial couples felt socially isolated in various aspects of daily life, including work, family, and leisure. The primary cause …

Scholarly Communication And Bibliometrics, Christine L. Borgman, Jonathan Furner Dec 2001

Scholarly Communication And Bibliometrics, Christine L. Borgman, Jonathan Furner

Jonathan Furner

Why devote an ARIST chapter to scholarly communication and bibliometrics, and why now? Bibliometrics already is a frequently covered ARIST topic, with chapters such as that by White and McCain (1989) on bibliometrics generally, White and McCain (1997) on visualization of literatures, Wilson and Hood (2001) on informetric laws, and Tabah (2001) on literature dynamics. Similarly, scholarly communication has been addressed in other ARIST chapters such as Bishop and Star (1996) on social informatics and digital libraries, Schamber (1994) on relevance and information behavior, and many earlier chapters on information needs and uses. More than a decade ago, the first …

The Natufian Human Skeletal Remains From Wadi Hammeh 27 (Jordan), Steve Webb, Phillip C. Edwards Dec 2001

The Natufian Human Skeletal Remains From Wadi Hammeh 27 (Jordan), Steve Webb, Phillip C. Edwards

Steve Webb

This report describes skeletal remains from the early Natufian site of Wadi Hammeh 27 in Jordan. At least seven individuals are represented, and although small, the collection is notable for the eclecticism of its mortuary practice. Modes of mortuary disposal and ritual include a single-primary burial, a collective-secondary burial, burnt human cranial fragments disposed in residential contexts, and the ochre staining of bones. The two burials come from the lowest phase of the site, with fragmentary burials and smaller amounts of material issuing from the upper phases. The primary inhumation is marked by a neighbouring pit, which seems to be …

Multimedia Product Documentation – User Requirements, Walter Hudetz, Michael Friedewald Dec 2001

Multimedia Product Documentation – User Requirements, Walter Hudetz, Michael Friedewald

Michael Friedewald

The globalisation of industry and the strong depend- ence of the German machine manufacturers on export has increased the importance of an up-to-date and user-oriented product documentation not only as a cost factor but as a compe- tition factor of strategic importance as well. The use of Multi- media is a promising approach to realize such an improved documentation. This paper presents the results of a survey that was conducted among the manufacturers of machines and their customers to identify the user requirements for Multimedia Product Documentation. As a result of the analysis a number of success factors are identified. …

Domestic Brick Architecture In Early Colonial Virginia, Douglas Ross Dec 2001

Domestic Brick Architecture In Early Colonial Virginia, Douglas Ross

Douglas Ross

The purpose of my research was to clarify the social and economic significance of brick domestic architecture in early eighteenth century Virginia, a period for which few if any well-dated examples are known from prior to c. 1720, and to use the findings to reevaluate the significance of brick for the entire first century and a half of English settlement in Virginia. An associated goal was to use this understanding to aid in interpreting the results of my excavations at Turkey Island, a seventeenth to nineteenth century tobacco plantation in Henrico County owned by the Randolph family.

Structural data on …

September 11 Attacks And Surviving Same-Sex Partners: Defining Family Through Tragedy, Nancy J. Knauer Dec 2001

September 11 Attacks And Surviving Same-Sex Partners: Defining Family Through Tragedy, Nancy J. Knauer

Nancy J. Knauer

The September 11 relief efforts present a unique prism through which to view the status of same-sex relationships and to consider which families count when the United States is supposedly at its most generous, most united, and most injured. On a basic human level, would the nation grieve for Peggy Neff, who lost her partner of 18 years when Flight 77 crashed into the Pentagon, as it had for the widow of a fire fighter? Would Neff be eligible to file a claim with the multi-billion dollar federal September 11 Victim Compensation Fund, which Congress established to compensate victims and …

The Shield Of Achiles, State, Security And New Wars (El Escudo De Aquiles, Estado, Seguridad Y Nuevas Guerras) Spanish, Fernando Estrada

Fernando Estrada

At this stage of the manifestation of irregular warfare conflicts becomes porous, bottom to top and back. The security of states depends on a weak shield vulnerable to unforeseen terrorist actions. This will not come labeled by a single identity but multiplied their masks, may be a timid bystander who walks the streets at noon sweater dress with a teacher dressed and slow. The security policy imposes severe restrictions on basic freedoms, including perhaps most importantly, individual privacy or family.

Forecasting Volatility In European Stock Markets With Non-Linear Garch Models, Giancarlo Forte, Matteo Manera Dec 2001

Forecasting Volatility In European Stock Markets With Non-Linear Garch Models, Giancarlo Forte, Matteo Manera

Matteo Manera

This paper investigates the forecasting performance of three popular variants of the nonlinear GARCH models, namely VS-GARCH, GJR-GARCH and Q-GARCH, with the symmetric GARCH(1,1) model as a benchmark. The application involves ten European stock price indexes. Forecasts produced by each non-linear GARCH model and each index are evaluated using a common set of classical criteria, as well as forecast combination techniques with constant and non-constant weights. With respect to the standard GARCH specification, the non-linear models generally lead to better forecasts in terms of both smaller forecast errors and lower biases. In-sample forecast combination regressions are better than those from …

Environmental Levies And Distortionary Taxation: Pigou, Taxation, And Pollution, Gilbert E. Metcalf Dec 2001

Environmental Levies And Distortionary Taxation: Pigou, Taxation, And Pollution, Gilbert E. Metcalf

Gilbert E. Metcalf

I note an important distinction between the optimal price of environmental quality in a second-best world and the optimal level of environmental quality. Using an analytical general equilibrium model, I show that for reasonable parameter values, an increase in tax distortions (arising from an increase in required tax revenues) leads to a fall in the optimal Pigouvian tax rate even while environmental quality improves. In general, knowledge of the direction of changes in optimal environmental tax rates due to changes in the economy is not sufficient for understanding the impact on environmental quality.

Sistema Partidário E Instabilidade Eleitoral No Brasil, Paulo S. Peres Dec 2001

Sistema Partidário E Instabilidade Eleitoral No Brasil, Paulo S. Peres

Paulo S. Peres

The Two Sides Of Euroscepticism. Party Positions On European Integration In East Central Europe, Petr Kopecky, Cas Mudde Dec 2001

The Two Sides Of Euroscepticism. Party Positions On European Integration In East Central Europe, Petr Kopecky, Cas Mudde

Cas Mudde

This article aims to make a three-fold contribution to the study of Euroscepticism in the wider Europe. First, it presents a two-dimensional conceptualization of party positions on European integration in general, and of Euroscepticism in particular, distinguishing between diffuse and specific support for European integration (i.e. ‘support for the ideas of European integration’ and ‘support for the EU’). Second, it analyses the location, type, and electoral strength of party-based Euroscepticism in the four candidate countries of East Central Europe – the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, and Slovakia. Third, it contributes to the ideology vs. strategy debate, showing that ideology is …
